Why did you write this book?
We love crafting erotic romance stories with bisexual heroines. When we began this one, we envisioned it as an erotic romp, with lots of enticing sex scenes for readers to enjoy. We originally created the device of the threat of mob exposure to push our characters into flaunting the mob with more and more sex scenes. We probably accomplished that goal, but as the project unfolded, we came to care more about Merry’s journey as a woman.
When her story opens, on New Year’s Eve 1999, widow Merry Delaney is probably one of the most shut-down, despairing characters we’ve ever met. We loved tracing (well, and creating) those tiny first steps toward change–the ones she hardly even knows she’s making. By the time she’s aware, she’s evolved into something she hardly recognizes, but she’s never said “no” along the way. She’s also believed she’d never fall in love again. Now that she has, she faces tough choices–if she continues to embrace her new identity, will she lose her new love? What will she choose?
What is your favorite genre to read?
I love to read and it’s hard to select a favorite genre! So I’ll go with two of them. I’m a lifelong Jane Austen fan and have re-read all her novels more times than I can count, each time finding nuances I hadn’t noticed earlier. More broadly, historical novels are a favorite, the more accurate, the better. Currently, both my husband and I are delving into British history between the fall of Rome and the 1066 Norman conquest. I never knew we had so much information about that era–and about its many brave and worthy heroines, especially.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
No surprise here, it’s one of Jane Austen’s: Emma. My favorite scene in all Austen’s novels is Emma walking the circuit of the garden with Mr. Knightly, dreading that she will hear him tell her of his love for Harriet. Then she realizes she has wounded him by telling him not to speak. Emma’s pride and fear are suddenly dwarfed by her wish not to cause him pain, and she invites him to take another turn with her in the walk, apologizes, and begs him speak. We all know the happy ending – he declares his love for her. But it is Emma’s profound transformation that has drawn me to her.
What are you working on at the moment?
We’re polishing an erotic romance manuscript about a Twin Cities photographer who specializes in erotic portraits and a Nebraska schoolteacher who signs up for a course at the academy where he teaches – unprepared for what he asks of her until she delves deeper into her own family history and realizes where she comes from. As you can see, we love exploring women’s self-discovery journeys – and of course, those journeys provide lots of opportunities for erotic scenes.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
We have a four-book series set at a sexuality institute (fictional, but based on real ones) in New York City, where we loved to travel when our son lived there. Each book focuses on the sexual journey and romance of a single woman, ranging in age from their twenties to their sixties. As always, lots of opportunity for erotic sex scenes, but also a chance to explore the difference between sex and love, to challenge the stigma often attached to sex workers, and perhaps to spice up the love lives of our readers.
