Meet Larissa Channer from The Fated Stars by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #scifiWelcome Larissa Channer from The Fated Stars, a new scifi romance by Veronica Scott.

Meet Larissa Channer

Age: We count the years differently in the Sectors but I’m mid-thirties as you would see it.

Gender: Female
Birthplace: A planet far, far away
Profession: Mercenary
Ethnicity: In the Sectors we’re all a mix of many races
Species (for scifi/fantasy characters): Human
Please provide a physical description of yourself.
Tall, muscular, can hold my own in a fight. Black hair I usually keep in a bun.
Please tell us a little about your character.
I’m ex-military, served ten years in the Special Forces. Used my veteran’s bonus to buy a tight little spaceship, The Valkyrie Queen and outfit her for my needs. I take jobs anywhere in the Sectors and I’m highly paid. I like to right wrongs and help those who are the underdogs.
Who is the significant other in your character’s life?
At the beginning of the book I’m single and happy to be in that state, but as soon as I meet Samell, the alien empath, I start re-thinking my priorities. After all, I’ve been a mercenary for over ten years now! I resist the idea of settling down but through all our adventures together he’s very persuasive. And not with his empathic powers – they don’t work on me! Although we do share some good dreams…
How does your heroine dress?
Larissa prefers clothing that’s simple and suitable for combat. She’s not a dress person, which becomes a little bit of a running joke between her and Samell during the book. He’s from a more medieval-level planet and unused to women wearing pants. But he adapts!
How educated is this character? Is she book smart, self-taught, widely-experienced? Larissa is a highly trained ex-Special Forces soldier, who maintains her edge with constant training and many varied assignments from the Mercenary Guild.
Does she scrape by, live comfortably, live extravagantly?
She lives on her own ship and manages to be pretty comfortable. She just got a big bonus from a happy client and plans to do some weaponry and engine upgrades, but then she meets Samell and becomes embroiled in his problems.
What special skills does your character rely on?
Larissa is good with hand to hand combat, all kinds of advanced weaponry, piloting a small spaceship, planning difficult missions, flying and quick thinking in a crisis.
Does this character see morality as black-and-white, or with shades of gray?
She’s been all over the galaxy and has seen a lot of things go down. She’d like to view the world in black and white terms but she knows in reality there are many gray areas. She does her best to remain true to her own ethics and inner set of core values, in any situation.
How do others perceive your character based upon looks? How true is this assumption?
When they finally meet some of the nobility from Samell’s world, the ladies look down upon her.
Does your character care about those assumptions?
Not in the least! Larissa knows her own worth.
What inner doubt causes your character the most difficulty?
As she becomes more attracted to Samell, she figures that a high born guy like him would never have noticed her – a plain spoken soldier – if they’d met on his planet. She’d have guarded the castle while he danced inside with the court ladies. But as the story continues and her skills and knowledge are key to their success, she accepts that Samell truly does value her and care for her.
Who in her life has the power to hurt this character the most? Why?
At the beginning no one has power over Larissa, as she’s a loner with friends in the Mercenary Guild but no one especially close to her. As the story progresses and she falls in love with Samell, of course he has the power to hurt her (not that he ever would).

About Your Writer: Questions for your character

To honor the person who chose to share your story, please answer at least four of these questions. Questions with more than one point should be considered one question. You may answer as many more as you like.
Why do you think your writer chose to write about you?
She was intrigued to try a role reversal story and have the heroine be the badass. Also, her daughters had been challenging her for a while now to write a female soldier for them.
Was there anything your writer discovered about you that was a surprise to one or both of you?
I don’t like dresses, not even for special occasions.
Why do you think your writer loves to write?
Even when she’s working on one book, she’s thinking about other stories she can’t wait to write. Veronica wants to explore the universe! She likes to share her stories with the readers
What other character from your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
We meet two Special Forces soldiers, Pete and Donnie D, who are very helpful to us – I think they deserve to have their stories told. My author kind of set up the possibility for them to appear in a sequel.

Tell us about The Fated Stars

Larissa Channer, a tough no-nonsense mercenary in the Sectors, is celebrating success on her last job and a big bonus, with no slightest thought of taking on another assignment anytime soon. Out for a night of carousing with her friends at a third rate carnival on a backwater planet, she walks into the tent of a fake fortune teller and finds herself confronting the most intriguing man she’s ever seen. But something’s wrong, ominous currents lie beneath the surface of their encounter and Larissa can’t leave well enough alone.
Samell, a powerful, high born empathic priest, has been kidnapped from his own primitive planet along with a number of his people, and sold to the shady operator of an interstellar carnival. Kept enslaved, pretending to be a fortune teller while forced by his captor to steal information from the minds of all who come before him, Samell despairs of every breaking free.
Until Larissa walks into his tent and he recognizes the warrior who might mean the difference between life and death.
The situation becomes dire when Larissa and Samell come to the attention of the Shemdylann pirates who kidnapped him in the first place and the deadly Mawreg, aliens who threaten the Sectors. Can she save herself and the empathic alien noble, and derail the Mawreg plot against the Sectors? And will the soldier end up with her prince when all’s said and done?
