Lady of the Nile by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #paranormalToday’s featured book is Lady of the Nile, a paranormal romance, by Veronica Scott.

Tuya, a high ranking lady-in-waiting at Pharaoh’s court, lives a life of luxury, pageantry and boredom. Khian, a brave and honorable officer from the provinces temporarily re-assigned to Thebes, catches her eye at a gold of valor ceremony. As the pair are thrown together by circumstances, she finds herself unaccountably attracted to this man so unlike the haughty nobles she’s used to. But a life with Khian would mean leaving the court and giving up all that she’s worked so hard to attain. As she goes about her duties, Tuya struggles with her heart’s desires.
When Tuya is lured into a dangerous part of Thebes by her disgraced half-brother and kidnapped by unknown enemies of Egypt, Khian becomes her only hope. Pharaoh assigns him to bring the lady home.
Aided by the gods, Khian races into the desert on the trail of the elusive kidnappers, hoping to find Tuya before it’s too late. Neither of them has any idea of the dark forces arrayed against them, nor the obstacles to be faced. An ancient evil from the long gone past wants to claim Tuya for its own purposes and won’t relinquish her easily.
Can Khian find her in time? Will he and his uncanny allies be able to prevent her death? And if the couple escapes and reaches safety, what of their fledgling romance?

    Introducing Grant Barton

Welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. I’d like to get to know you better. Please tell me about yourself.

Age: We count years differently in the Sectors, as we live longer now than people in your time did. I’m mid-thirties in your way of thinking.

    Gender: Male

    Birthplace: A planet named Qaazamir

Profession: Served in the Sectors Special Forces, now on medical retirement, working security on the Nebula Zephyr spaceliner

    Ethnicity: Qaazamiri

Species (for scifi/fantasy characters): Humanoid I believe is your term

Please provide a physical description of yourself.
Over 6′ tall, dark hair, hazel eyes. A couple of tattoos. Some scars. Karissa seems to like my face well enough.
    Tell us about yourself, please.
I served in the Z Corps of the Special Forces, where soldiers with augmented mental abilities serve on teams alongside telepathic animals, like my eagle Valkyr. We did missions behind enemy lines, among other things.
Who is the significant other in your life?
Karissa Dawnstar, the interstellar singing sensation. I still have to pinch myself some days that I’ve ended up with her. How fortunate can an ordinary guy like me be, you know? She’s on a whole other level.
    How do you dress?
On duty, I wear the uniform of a CLC Line Security Officer. The Line’s colors are navy blue, light blue and white. I carry a sidearm (blaster/stunner combo) on the ship. We’re responsible for the safety of over 8000 passengers and crew. Off duty I prefer what you’d think of as T shirts and utility pants. Boots.
On what special skills do you rely?
I have a number of top secret implants I received as a member of the Sectors Special Forces. Sorry, you don’t have the right clearance to discuss them. I also have a telepathic bond with Valkyr, my eagle. I’m highly rated at marksmanship, unarmed combat, rated to fly anything up to a fighter craft, skilled in individual aerial combat using antigrav tech. I have leadership and management skills from my military training that I plan to deploy in support of Karissa’s career as we move forward.
    Do you have children?
Not yet. Karissa and I would like a family but we’ve just gotten together as a couple so it’s too soon.
Do you care about what others assume about you?
Not in the least. I care what Karissa thinks of me. I care that my brother soldiers trust me to watch their six (have their back) and know they can rely on me in any situation. I care that Valkyr knows I’d never do anything to hurt him or break our bond.
Can you keep a secret? Why or why not?
I carry the highest level of clearance the Sectors military gives and if I told you any more than that I’d have to kill you. (He grins.)
How emotionally expressive are you to others?
With Karissa and Valkyr, I can be myself. Anyone else is going to see the tough military guy façade.

Mission to Mahjundar by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #SciFi #romance

Mission to Mahjundar by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #SciFi #scifiromToday’s featured book is Mission to Mahjundar by Veronica Scott. Tell us about your story. We’ll have other questions in a moment.

An attempted assassination left Princess Shalira blind as a child and, now that she’s of marriageable age, her prospects are not good because of her disability. She’s resigned herself to an arranged marriage rather than face life under the thumb of her cold stepmother. But then she meets Mike Varone, a Sectors Special Forces officer sent to Mahjundar by the intergalactic government to retrieve a ship lost in her planet’s mountains. After Mike saves Shalira from another assassination attempt, she arranges for him to escort her across the planet to her future husband. She’s already falling hard for the deadly offworlder and knows she should deny herself the temptation he represents, but taking Mike along to protect her is the only way she’ll live long enough to escape her ruthless stepmother.

Mike, for his part, resists his growing attraction to the princess; he has a mission on this planet and rescuing the vulnerable but brave princess isn’t it. No matter how much he wishes it could be.

But what should have been an easy trek through Mahjundar’s peaceful lands swiftly turns into an ambush with danger around every turn. Shalira’s marriage begins to seem less like an arranged union and more like yet another planned assassination. The more they work together to survive, the harder it becomes to stop themselves from falling in love. Caught in a race against time, can they escape the hostile forces hunting them and make it off the planet?

What species/races of people are in your book?

Humans descended from Terran colonists and the local population of the planet, who are humanoid.

Do you have non-sentient creatures or animals in your story? If so, what are they?

The legendary ‘cherindor’, which are sacred to the royal family of the planet. They are represented as huge winged felines with barbed tails and three eyes.

    Language and Culture

What languages are spoken in your story universe?

My characters primarily speak the interstellar common language Basic, but people around them speak Mahjundan and other local languages. My military Special Forces hero from the Sectors has been hypnotrained in the primary language before the mission began. He has a guide assigned to assist him with the more regional dialects.

What special laws are important to your story world?

Since the planet isn’t as technologically advanced as many in the Sectors, the hero isn’t supposed to be using ‘modern’ weapons, but he’s brought some on the job anyway. Never be without your trusty blaster in a scifi romance! The heroine, Princess Shalira, has been promised in marriage by her father the emperor, to a feudal warlord as part of a treaty. Part of the plot hinges on the necessity for her to undergo certain rituals and recover tribal clan insignia from her late mother’s tomb. Mike, the hero, gets drawn into this journey and becomes quite enmeshed in the mysticism and magic of the planet while trying to protect her and accomplish his own mission.

What rights (such as equality) are challenges for your characters?

Shalira was left blind as a result of the assassination attempt on her as a child, so she deals with that every day. She is less respected by her people, because she isn’t a ‘perfect’ imperial princess. Ironically one of the fierce indigenous peoples they encounter on the journey view her blindness as making her a perfect messenger to and from their gods. The high priests in the mountain city fight over her, while planning to kill Mike as a sacrifice to their cruel gods.

    Story Setting

    What makes this world unique?

The old gods are fading away on Mahjundar as people turn to worshipping newer deities, but the primitive pantheon still wields power. Shalira is one of the people able to draw on that power, which makes her vulnerable to a number of scheming factions.

Tell us about the age of the culture in your story, i.e., are the people part of an ancient civilization, a newly formed group within an established culture, pioneer colonists, etc

.In the Sectors, one of my world building tenets is that many worlds have been found to have similar species, and human or humanlike races. I leave open to speculation the root cause as to why that should be. Ancient visitors? Or? Mahjundar is the same, with its own unique flora and fauna as well.

What food or drink is available to your characters?

While on the planet Mike eats the same diet as the locals, and has had injects against any toxins that might affect a Terran-descent human. I’d say the main thing everyone has to watch out for is the local black wine, which is highly intoxicating!

In what ways was it helpful to have a map (or sketch of one) for your story? (Provide a link to an image, if available)

I don’t typically do a map or a sketch for my books. I hold the information in my head. My only exception to date has been when I write stories set on large spaceships, where I have drawn a rough model and identified which decks hold what.

What’s your advice for writers who want to create a solid background for their story world?

Make it interesting, be consistent in your details and let your imagination soar. That’s the best part about science fiction – you can establish literally any setting for your story.

You’ve posed a number of detailed questions on language, culture, world building, research, etc., which I’ve chosen not to address today because my primary emphasis in any of my novels is the characters, the romance, the action and the adventure. Long ago I established my overarching framework for the Sectors, which is my interstellar civilization. I do of course develop details for whatever planet the particular story is taking place on, but not to the depth your excellent questions were attempting to measure. As I write each novel I may do research on isolated facets of the particular story – for Mahjundar I spent a lot of time reading up on various causes of blindness, for example, but I also drew heavily on my personal experience with a close friend from college who was blind. I had previously done much research on the Aztecs and the Mayans, aspects of which I applied to some of the indigenous societies my characters encountered. The character Tlazomiccuhtli, the ancient and blood thirsty god worshipped by one tribe on this planet, is based in part on my own encounter with a truly horrific Aztec deity (in statue form luckily) in a Mexico City museum years ago.

Google and Wikipedia are an author’s friends when doing research, as places to start at any rate, and identify other sources to dive more deeply into as needed. (I do have a huge personal library of scholarly tomes to consult for the research that goes into my ancient Egyptian paranormal romances.)

But to a large extent, the conditions encountered on any planet in my scifi universe derive from my own imagination and will only be as detailed and pervasive as the story I’m trying to tell demands. So some of the books may have a lot of planet-specific worldbuilding development – Escape from Zulaire for example – and others quite a bit less.

    Danger in the Stars @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #SFR

Welcome Veronica Scott author of Danger in the Stars, a new scifi
    romance.
    Why did you write
    this book?
When I was writing Star Cruise: Stowaway for the ‘Pets In
Space’ anthology last year, I had the premise of an empathic alien priestess
stolen from her own world and sold to an interstellar crime syndicate, forced
to do their bidding. In that novella, the story was about the woman’s escape
with the help of my ship’s crew and two pets. When I finished writing that one,
I started thinking about a sister, also held as a prisoner, but not lucky
enough to escape. How would it be for her, to be in the midst of the criminal
operations, trying to stay true to her own values, but forced to commit crimes?
Who would help her? Conor, the hero, came into my head and said, “I will.”
He’s a comple man of many secrets, but no spoilers from me!
    What is your favorite
    genre to read?
I love science fiction romance, but I read voraciously,
everything from Regency romances to romantic suspense with Navy SEALs.
    Who is your favorite
character from fiction (not including your own)?
I love Nalini Singh’s Arrows in her Psy-Changeling series,
and of that group, Judd is still my favorite.
    What are you working
    on at the moment?
I’ve got two things going on – a paranormal novel set in
ancient Egypt and a new scifi romance. I don’t usually try to juggle telling
two stories at once but the Egyptian tale came to me one night completely
plotted and so I figured I’d better write it!
What books will we see from you in coming months?
In May I’ll be releasing a volume of three scifi romance
stories, which were previously only available in anthologies, and then of
course the two new books I talked about in the previous question will come out
    in the summer.
    Please tell us about
    your latest book.
    Genre Science fiction romance

Miriell, a powerful empathic priestess, has been kidnapped
from her own primitive planet along with a number of her people, and sold to
the evil Amarotu Combine, largest organized crime syndicate in the Sectors.
When she and her handler are sent to use her power to commit an assassination,
she must leave behind her own sister as hostage to ensure her compliance.
Miriell cannot ask for aid without endangering herself and others.
Despite his best efforts, Combine enforcer Conor Stewart is
entranced by Miriell, and helps her evade the worst of brutal treatment from
the rest of the mob. But Conor must keep his distance, before the lovely empath
learns that he has secrets of his own–secrets that could get them both killed.
The situation becomes dire when Conor and Miriell come to
the attention of both the Combine overlords and the deadly Mawreg, aliens who
threaten the Sectors. Can she save herself and the Mawreg’s next victims? And
will Conor help her, or remain loyal to his evil bosses?

Meet Twilka Zabour: Star Survivor @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #SFR

Welcome Twilka Zabour from Star Survivor, a new Science
    Fiction Romance by Veronica Scott.
    Title Star Survivor
    Genre SciFi Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13+
The survivors of a terrible wreck meet again—but this time
    only one can survive.
They survived an iconic spaceship wreck together. She never
expected to see him again … especially not armed to kill her.
Twilka Zabour is an interstellar celebrity. She built on her
notoriety as a carefree Socialite who survived the terrible wreck of the Nebula
Dream, and launched a successful design house. But now the man who gave meaning
to her life, then left her, is back–this time for the worst of reasons. Will he
kill her … or help her survive?
D’nvannae Brother Khevan survived the Nebula Dream in the
company of a lovely, warm woman, only to be pulled away from her, back into his
solitary life in the service of the Red Lady. Now Twilka’s within his reach
again–for all the wrong reasons. Khevan will do everything within his power to
discover why Twilka has been targeted for assassination, and to save her.
But Khevan is not Twilka’s only pursuer. Will Khevan and
Twilka’s ingenuity be all that stands between them and death?

    Meet Twilka Zabour

Age: early 30’s (but people live much longer in the future)
    Gender: Female
Birthplace: on a rich Inner Sector planet
    Profession: Fashion Designer/Interstellar Celebutante
    Species (for scifi/fantasy characters):Human
    Please provide a
    physical description of yourself.
Depends on the day and my mood! Usually about 5’5″,
brown eyes, good figure, hair brunette but subject to change on a whim.
    Please tell us a
    little about yourself.
I’m one of 37 children – my father is a generational
billionaire and has had many wives and girlfriends. I used to spend all my time
pleasure seeking and going wherever the excitement was to be found in the
galaxy, but after surviving the titanic wreck of the cruise liner Nebula Dream,
I realized I was capable of doing so much more. I established my own business
as a fashion designer. Yes, I took a loan from my Dad, but I gave him a
detailed business plan and have since paid him back. Sometimes I appear in
trideo entertainments (equivalent to your movies) as myself. My earlier
reputation as a ‘celebrity’ helps the business.
Who is the significant other in your life?
Khevan, a member of the D’nvannae Brotherhood. We fell in
love during the catastrophic events of the Nebula Dream, but then he left me
with no explanation…until we meet again at the start of Star Survivor.
    How do you dress?
In the height of interstellar fashion, as decreed by me.
(Twilka laughs) I source unusual materials from many worlds and try to give
back by commissioning local women to create special designs, fabrics and
accessories for my collections. I like dramatic clothes that capture attention,
although I can be found in a simple cotton dress and sandals if the situation
requires it. I don’t do gimmicks but find my inspiration in the art, natural
wonders and culture of planets I visit. I try to be respectful and mindful of
    the local beliefs and traditions.
    Are you book-smart, self-taught,
    widely-experienced?
Mostly self taught and widely experienced. Watching my
father and my older brothers and sisters work in the Sectors corporate world
taught me so much. My Dad would discuss business at the dinner table when he
was home, and sometimes took us younger kids to the office or on business trips
to observe. He intended for various of his offspring to take over different
aspects of his corporate empire. Of course then I did the teenage rebellion
thing! My years of traveling with fellow rich kids and idle celebrities were a
school of hard knocks and dumb choices leading to my learning through
consequences. I’ve also had some amazing mentors since I started my own
    business.
Do you get by, live comfortably,
    live extravagantly?
Classic poor little rich girl here. Never appreciated my
good fortune properly until I survived the wreck and then decided to have my
own business. Now that I make my own credits and pay my own bills, I’m much
more sensible about what luxuries I give myself, and I try to give back on the
worlds where I obtain my fabrics and accessories. A certain portion of profits
from Zabour Designs goes to worthy projects, different on each planet,
    depending what they need most.
    On what special skills
    do you rely?
I’ve always been able to draw and paint, and since I was a
child I’d sketch clothing and accessories. I love to design. Even when the
situation is at its worst in Star Survivor, I try to handle my stress by doing
new drawings. I’m good with people, I understand business and I’ve learning I’m
very good in a crisis situation. Not much rattles me.
If someone from your past showed up, who would you most want
    it to be, and why?
For five years I dreaded meeting Khevan again, since he’d
left me with no explanation and returned to the service of the Red Lady, the
goddess he served. Yet on the other hand, I longed to give him a piece of my
mind…and maybe a second chance. So when we did encounter each other at the
beginning of the adventure known as Star Survivor, I had so many mixed emotions
    to deal with.
    What past event causes
    you the most fear?
I used to have terrible flashbacks to certain events that
happened during the wreck of the Nebula Dream, but if Khevan and I were going
to survive the Red Lady’s wrath in Star Survivor, I literally had to face those
fears and overcome them. The advantage I had this time – besides Khevan’s love
    – was that I know myself now and how strong I really.
