Saying goodbye to the Romance Lives Forever blog #RLFblog

As of today, Dec 1, 2023, I am closing Romance Lives Forever. Why? I'm organized and efficient, but with as much as I want to do going forward, I can no longer maintain RLF. I used Triberr to amplify the blog on social media, especially Twitter. The new requirements and limits from Twitter cut exposure by a huge margin. Triberr brought 80%+ of all readers to the blog. Since it's no longer active, that cost another huge drop in traffic.

It costs a bit to run the blog, register its domain name, pay for the signup/reminder service, and it takes time to chase down people who send things last minute (or not at all). Plus I have to let authors know the service is available. Then I format the material, resize the images, upload everything, and schedule its promotion. Alas, time and money won out.

I started the blog in 2009, and went to daily posts in 2010. I've explored many ways to do all this and still find time to write and market for myself. I hired an assistant last year, but only I can write the stories in my heart. I am loath to give up, not being a quitter by nature.

    When it's Time to Quit

Last month, I heard Becca Syme (one of my mentors) say that it's time to quit when you no longer love what you do. Becca is brilliant. I took her Strengths for Writers and Write Better-Faster courses in the last 12 months. Each came with 6 months of follow up calls and targeted counseling. Changed my life in so many ways. Here's the video I'm referring to if you're curious. https://youtu.be/GRG5UeFYihE

Daily monitoring this blog is not what I love. What I love is supporting other authors, and the blog was how I did that. I will still support them but in ways that leave time for my own priorities. It took more than a year for me to decide to do this (or rather, stop doing this). I almost didn't commit to 2023, but felt guilty for quitting. It wasn't until I heard Becca's comment last month that I gave myself permission to do what I had to do. She wasn't talking about blogging, or anything even close to what I was doing. She was talking about writing in the golden age of publishing (the new era we've recently entered), and how to know what to do next (or stop doing).

The video was from Ream, which is a new subscription platform for authors. I've just launched mine. I attended an accelerator class with a handful of other authors in a small-group setting for mentorship. Wonderful support and I learned things I never expected.

Some of the Many Authors Who Made RLF a Success

Adriana Kraft, Alexa Aston, Alina K Field, Amber Daulton, Anne Kane, Brenda Sparks, Daryl Devore, Dee S Knight, Effrosyni Moschoudi, Faye Hall, Iris Blobel, J Arlene Culiner, Jami Gray, Jana Richards, Karen Cino, Kate Hill, Kris Bock, Linda O'Connor, Lisabet Sarai, Livia Quinn, NJ Walters, Seelie Kay, Tena Stetler, Tina Donahue, Veronica Scott, Vicki Batman

I'll miss the blog. It's been a part of my life during most of my career as an author. I look forward to what comes after this, and having the time and freedom to pursue the next steps.

Thank you for being part of my journey. If you'd like to support me and keep up with what I'm doing next, here's how:

Read Nario the new #SciFi #Romance by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog

Read Nario the new #SciFi #Romance by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblogA genetically engineered Badari Warrior finds himself on a one way trip to the home world of his enemies in Veronica Scott’s Nario. Will he be able to keep his human fated mate safe and get them home again when everyone on the planet is against them?

Veronica, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Nario: A Badari Warriors Scifi Romance Novel.

    Nario by Veronica Scott

    Genre SciFi Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13+

What starts out as a simple mission to rescue a group of lost humans turns into a nightmare for pack enforcer Nario, as he’s captured by the enemy scientists and plunged into an unprecedented journey to their home world for unknown experiments.

No Badari has ever been to the Khagrish planet but Nario vows to find a way to save himself and the others taken with him. The situation takes on additional urgency when he realizes one of the human women in the group is his fated mate.

Aliana Ridley was a historian in the Sectors, traveling from world to world to record significant events when she was abducted by enemy aliens and destined to become a subject in unimaginable experiments. Now she has to rely on this fearsome, genetically engineered soldier to help her escape their captors and find a way home. She agrees to pretend to be his mate to fool the scientists but soon finds herself experiencing emotions she never expected to have with a man who’s handsome but not human.

Will Nario find a way to escape the enemy’s grasp and get them all safely back to the Badari planet?

Author’s Note: This is a complete story for the two main characters, ending with their HEA. There is a cliffhanger situation unresolved in the book for a pair of secondary characters, which I’ll resolve in the next book in the series.

Why did you write this book?

First, let me say what a pleasure it’s been to visit you here on the RLF Blog over the years! I think my first guest post was about Marooned, back in 2015. But all good things do come to an end and I’m honored to be among the final guests on this wonderful blog. I wrote NARIO because he’s the next Badari Warrior in my award-winning series to have his adventure and romance told, while also advancing the overall series arc a bit. NARIO is the 19th book in the series (which can all be read as standalones if the reader doesn’t mind mild spoilers for earlier books). Pack enforcer Nario first appeared in the book centering on his Alpha JAMOKAN and I just fell in love with him when he appeared. He was like an old friend and I knew he needed a book of his own.

What is your favorite genre to read?

Science fiction romance, although I read a lot of different genres too, from Regency romance to military fiction.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Either Ripley from the movie “Aliens” or Lessa the Weyrleader from Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonrider series. Both strong women who don’t take no for an answer and get things DONE.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m writing the next Badari Warrior book, which is Faine. He was along for the trip in Nario and I had to leave a little bit of a cliffhanger for him and his fated mate (well, okay a big cliffhanger) while wrapping up Nario’s HEA.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

After Faine I’ll probably write a new Star Cruise story. I like to do at least one a year in that series, and then either more Badari Warriors or possibly the start of a new scifi romance series. I do have a novelette coming out in an anthology in September, which features my first ever hero with a tail. That was fun to write. It’s entitled “Breaking the Alien Love Curse” and it’s in the Supra Vellum anthology. I’m always full of ideas and not enough time!

Read Talinn by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #SciFiRomance #SciFi #RomanceVeronica, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Talinn.

    Talinn by Veronica Scott

    Genre Science Fiction Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Talinn was a genetically engineered senior soldier in his Badari Warrior pack until unscrupulous laboratory guards faked his death and sold him into slavery in the galaxy’s hinterlands. Purchased by a nomadic warlord and forced to fight in games for the amusement of the crowds, Talinn has endured through sheer strength of will. He sees no possibility of escape but a Badari never gives up until the goddess calls him to the afterlife.

Bailey Kingsmere was a talented and ambitious entertainer on an interstellar cruise liner when her ship was destroyed in an accident. She escaped in a defective cryonic lifepod, which eventually drifted out of the Sectors entirely and crashed on a primitive planet. Superstitious locals decide to place her in the arena as a prize for a lucky gladiator.

Talinn needs only one look to know Bailey is his fated mate. He’ll do whatever it takes to rescue her from the other fighters and claim her as his prize but how can he ensure her safety thereafter? Since he’s not human and has alien reptilian predator DNA which gives him extra capabilities, will Bailey accept him as a mate? And can they ever escape their desperate situation and find a way to freedom?

TALINN is the third book in the Badari Gladiators Series and can be read as a standalone. A steamy romance with fated mates this story was initially published in the Claimed Among the Stars Anthology (no longer available), but has been expanded here with an additional 15,000 words and includes a BONUS epilog.

Veronica, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Star Cruise Time Loop.

Star Cruise Time Loop by Veronica Scott

    Genre Science Fiction Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Raelyn Cantorini, senior stewardess on the interstellar cruise ship Nebula Zephyr thinks the alien artifact she bought on the last planet the ship visited was just a pretty glass orb…until her pet Eyn knocked the ornament off a table, shattering it and sending her into an infinitely repeating time loop.

Stuck reliving the same day over and over, Raelyn has only hours to try to save the ship and everyone on board from dying in a terrible catastrophe. As she tries to solve the mystery of what happens to the ship right before midnight each time the day repeats, Raelyn meets Kev Gordonn, the former Special Forces soldier turned actor and finds herself falling in love with him. Each time the day repeats, she learns more about him while he has no memory of her. Can she persuade him they’ve met before? Will he trust her enough to help stop the Nebula Zephyr’s destruction?

And if they do save the ship, will that reset time for Raelyn?

This is a lightly edited rerelease of my novella from the Pets in Space 6 anthology. No new material has been added.

Know the Heroine from Pets in Space® 4 Star Cruise Idol's Curse by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #scifiromanceVeronica Scott, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We’re excited to find out more about your heroine, but first, tell us about the book.

Pets in Space® 4 Star Cruise Idol’s Curse by Veronica Scott

    Genre Scifi romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

One of the 13 all new stories in this year’s Pets in Space® 4 anthology to benefit Hero-Dogs INC.,

    An unusual bequest….

Juli Shaeffer, the Nebula Zephyr’s cruise director, receives a mysterious bequest from the estate of a longtime passenger – a lump of rock taken from a reef on the planet Tahumaroa. Legend states anyone who steals from the ocean gods will be cursed. The passenger’s will requests the rock be returned to the beach so his heirs won’t be affected by the bad luck he believed he’d incurred. Juli doesn’t believe in superstitions and she agrees to carry out this small favor on the ship’s next stop at the planet in question.

Until the rock disappears from her office…

When the rock disappears and reappears in various locations around the ship, and seems connected to a steadily escalating series of mishaps, Juli turns to Third Officer Steve Aureli as the only one she feels she can trust. Along with Steve and his elderly Aunt Dian – a passenger aboard the Nebula Zephyr for this cruise – she investigates the strange series of malfunctions plaguing the interstellar luxury liner. Steve and Juli enlist his Aunt Dian’s dog, Charrli, a retired Sectors Z Corps canine, to help them track the missing rock as it moves about the ship.

Juli and Steve must find the rock, hang onto it and transport it to the planet’s surface, before the alien idol’s curse turns deadly. The attraction between the two of them grows as the threat to Juli becomes more and more focused. Can she carry out her task while he keeps her safe from the alien curse? Will the capricious alien idol bring them good fortune…or disaster?

    Know the Heroine: Juli

Know the Heroine from Pets in Space® 4 Star Cruise Idol's Curse by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #scifiromanceHere are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

It’s late, she’s bored. What does she do?

Juli would probably research the next stop for the Nebula Zephyr, since she’s the Cruise Director, and identify fun things for her passengers to do while on the planet.

What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?

She tries to eat a healthy diet but she’s on the go all day so her snacks are fruits and nuts. If she was feeling really decadent, she’d go have a special ice cream cake in one of the ship’s upscale restaurants.

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

On duty she wears the cruise line’s blue and white uniforms, mixing and matching various approved pieces depending on the day’s activities. She likes to be casual in her time off but she does enjoy wearing a fabulous gown for special occasions.

Does she know how to fix things?

Juli knows how to problem solve for her passengers, so she knows who to talk to on the ship to resolve issues and she’s happy to work through the cruise line’s offices on various planets to fix problems encountered by passengers in their local travels. She’s not technically trained in any way so she’d call the ship’s chief engineer or ask the ship’s Artificial Intelligence to fix anything of that nature.

She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

Earlier in the same cruise, one of the passengers, who is a famous opera singer, and who has symbiotic butterflies instead of hair, was pounced on by the ship’s cat. The alien butterflies flew away, the diva nearly died (because she lost her symbionts – the cat didn’t hurt her) and only the ship’s captain could persuade the singer not to sue. Luckily the butterflies returned. Juli had to apologize and swallow a lot of insults directed at the cat!

How does she act around children she doesn’t know?

She’s very good with children, a natural at talking with them and discovering their interests and enthusiasms. She organizes a lot of activities on the cruise ship to keep passengers’ children happy and busy.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

She needs a loud alarm to wake up but once she does open her eyes, she’s a total morning person who jumps out of bed and dives into the day’s tasks. She’s always conscious of her To Do list and feels the pressure to get things done.

How does she act around people who don’t know what she is?

Juli has built up a healthy level of self-confidence over her years working in the interstellar cruise ship industry so she knows she can resolve problems and issues successfully. In her personal life, she’s a bit more insecure, as with her crush on Third Officer Steve Aureli. Fortunately the events in this story force Juli and Steve together in the course of their duties and she’s able to pursue the romance she’s always hoped to have.

Will she let a worker handle things or do it herself?

She has a bit of an inner conflict not doing everything herself but as she’s risen through the ranks, she’s had to learn to delegate effectively and not micro manage. She’s effective at training people to carry out their duties, which eases her mind, and she has a wonderful assistant on the Nebula Zephyr, who is able to fill in for Juli when the issue of the idol’s curse sidelines her.

    Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

I know Juli loves earrings but she doesn’t have any piercings or tattoos. She does like the tatts Officer Aureli has though.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

Since she lives aboard the ship, she borrows a groundcar from the local cruise line office if possible when she’s on a planet, or would rent a vehicle if necessary. She’s not much for public transit only because she’s always under so much time pressure.

    Recycle or toss?

    Definitely recycle!

Thanks for helping us get to know your heroine!

Return of Dancer of the Nile (The Gods of Egypt) by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #NewRelease #AncientWorldRomanceVeronica Scott, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

Return of Dancer of the Nile (The Gods of Egypt) by Veronica Scott

    Genre Ancient World Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

    1550BCE

Nima, formerly a tavern dancer in the land of the Nile, has settled into the leisurely life of her dreams as the pampered, beloved wife to a high ranking general who’s also a member of Pharaoh’s court. She’s sworn never to dance for anyone else but Kamin, the man she loves. All is fine until one day news arrives that her husband has been killed in a chariot accident while on a trip to a remote city on Pharaoh’s behalf.

But as a reward for their previous service to Egypt against a dangerous enemy, the gods had promised Nima and Kamin they’d die at the same moment…so if she still lives, so must he.

Why is the ruler of the city lying to Pharaoh about Kamin’s death? What is the woman covering up? And where is Kamin?

Time for Nima the elegant lady to vanish from Thebes and Nima the skilled dancer to make her way in disguise to the far distant province and fight for Kamin’s life. She’ll have to deal with angry gods, black magic, an enemy prince and a deadly ghost along the way.

Nima is the only one who can rescue her beloved from the dark fate planned for him by Egypt’s enemies…

Standalone sequel to Dancer of the Nile.

Why did you write this book?

I’ve always been fascinated by ancient Egypt and this is my tenth novel set there. I love the challenge of telling a good story, with the gods taking an active role in the events. Mixing romance and adventure with the details of life along the Nile thousands of years ago is a challenge I relish. I was excited to return to Nima the dancer and Kamin the soldier, who both first appeared in Dancer of the Nile and tell more of their ongoing story. This is a standalone book but there are mild spoilers for the first book. And I relish the opportunity to put all my historical research to work and create an environment where readers feel at home in ancient Egypt, but keeping it relatable to the modern audience.

What is your favorite genre to read?

Science fiction romance is my first love, filling my e-reader (and what I write primarily), but I also read paranormal, fantasy, urban fantasy, thrillers and Regency romance.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Going by what I reread the most, Judd Lauren in Nalini Singh’s Caressed by Ice. He was the template for all her lethal Arrow soldiers who fall in love and they’re my favorite characters in her Psy/Changeling series. She makes me feel like I want to be the woman to melt that ice! I’m also always impressed by Frederica in the Regency romance novel of the same name by Georgette Heyer.

What are you working on at the moment?

Currently I’m writing a holiday novella set in my fantasy romance world of Cladddare and having fun with it. After that I’ll be writing the next book in my scifi romance Badari Warriors series about genetically engineered soldiers of the far future.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

In October the fourth annual Pets In Space® anthology releases and I have a full length scifi romance Star Cruise novel in the collection, all new. The fantasy holiday novella I mentioned should be out in November and hopefully the next Badari Warriors will be released in December. We’ll see how I do on that schedule!

Veronica Scott grew up in a house with a library as its heart. Dad loved science fiction, Mom loved ancient history and Veronica thought there needed to be more romance in everything. When she ran out of books to read, she started writing her own stories.
Seven time winner of the SFR Galaxy Award, as well as a National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award, Veronica is also the proud recipient of a NASA Exceptional Service Medal relating to her former day job, not her romances!
She read the part of Star Trek Crew Member in the audiobook production of Harlan Ellison’s “The City On the Edge of Forever.”
