Prostate Cancer Saved My Life by Lloyd A Meeker @LloydAMeeker #CancerAwareness #RLFblogAuthor Lloyd A Meeker shares how finding out the worst news turned out to be great.

Prostate Cancer Saved My Life by Lloyd A Meeker

Last November I received my third cancer diagnosis. This time it was my prostate, and in January I had a biopsy which revealed I had two different kinds, one slow, the other very aggressive. There was no time to lose, so surgery was scheduled for February 7th.

I was deeply discouraged. My first two diagnoses had been over fifteen years earlier, and I had become certain cancer had long ago slipped from my rear-view mirror, although my takeaways from that experience had stayed with me: seize the moment, make time for the important stuff, focus on the people and work I love, make space for my own needs, be fierce and unapologetic about it.

Still, it was a shock to anticipate yet another round of treatment, and I was despondent about what having my prostate removed might mean in my intimate life with my husband. And for the first time in a long, long time, I began to wonder whether I had other cancer time bombs ticking away inside my body. It was stressful, having that strain between me and my wonderful old body. It had stuck with me through so much over my rather checkered 70 years.

As my surgery date approached, I went in for the standard array of pre-op screening. Everything came back fine, except the EKG showed a slight anomaly. We opted for a second opinion. The new EKG wasn’t any better. We did a CT scan, and it looked like there were some arterial blockage that caused concern. We agreed with the cardiologist to have a catheterization performed as precaution before the surgery.

So the next day I was lying on the table while the cardiologist started the catheterization, and I’m listening to him mumble medicalese to an assistant, when he asked someone to bring the cardiac surgeon on duty into the room. I remember thinking, “I don’t think that happens every time,” and then I don’t remember much of anything so I must have got another dose of good drugs.

I woke up en route to somewhere, lying on a gurney, looking at the ceiling. It’s a visual cliche from countless movies to have the camera focus on the fluorescent ceiling lights as they slide by in endless procession. It was vaguely humorous to see it again in real life.

Anyway, I was wheeled from the OR to intensive care, with about a million tubes stuck in me. The cardiologist and the surgeon came by later to tell me why I wasn’t going to be going home right away. My main heart artery, so subtly called “the widow-maker,” was 99% blocked, and the other three weren’t much better. Apparently although my heart itself was still perfectly healthy, the slightest heart incident would have killed me, and a heart incident would occur without warning eventually, likely sooner than later. So I was having quadruple bypass surgery in the morning.

I have to admit that was a major surprise, since I’d never had any heart concerns. Bob and I had a few tears of fear and despair, and gradually realized that as shocking as it was, this was extremely good news, as neither of us had any clue I was carrying a different kind of time bomb in my body.

So now I have a foot-long beauty mark running down the middle of my chest, along with the smaller, more recent trophies acquired during prostate removal. And I really do consider it a beauty mark. It’s a daily reminder of how lucky I have been, how lucky I am, and how much more life and love I can know because of it.

And that’s how aggressive prostate cancer saved my life. Sometimes, if we’re especially lucky, we get help from astonishingly unusual places.

Know the Hero from When Love Whispers by Laura Haley-McNeil @laurarmcneil #RLFblog #sweetromanceLaura Haley-McNeil, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We’re excited to find out more about your hero, but first, tell us about the book.

When Love Whispers by Laura Haley-McNeil

    Genre Sweet Contemporary Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): G

    Sometimes, love comes in packages.

As the top ranked student at Charleston’s military academy, Preston Lowe excels in class, in sports and with women. Only Willow Dockery, a barmaid at the city’s trendy nightclub, sees the pain in his eyes when he’s out with friends having a good time. But Willow doesn’t know how Preston inwardly struggles to forget a past that could derail the career he’s worked hard to achieve.

Willow wrestles with her own secrets. After a disastrous relationship leaves her broke and disillusioned, she vows never to let anyone rob her of her dreams again. But as she gets to know Preston, it’s as if their tumultuous pasts meld together into something so startling it transforms their relationship and their lives forever.

Know the Hero from When Love Whispers

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

He loves to be comfortable, but as a military cadet, he wears the academy uniform during the day. After class, he can’t wait to dive into running shorts and a t-shirt. He’s a runner, and he’s running every free moment.

What is he like around children?

He isn’t accustomed to children, but there’s one baby he loves and wants to hold. He never thought he wanted a family. He’s determined to pursue his military career, but when he sees Willow holding her baby, the confusing surge of emotions make him wonder what he really wants.

Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?

He’s not a coffee drinker. Because he’s a runner, he drinks lots of water. Not that he likes water, but he needs to stay hydrated, even in a humid place like Charleston.

What apps would he have on his phone?

He has all the phone apps. One of his favorites is the food delivery service. When he’s studying, he’ll often miss meals. He has a senior project due and he’d rather work on that than eat. He’s an eat to live type of guy. Even though he’s a runner, he can’t resist a cheeseburger and fries. He also likes the flower order app. After all, what better way to make a new mother smile that order her a bouquet of two dozen red roses?

    Beard or clean-shaven?

He has to be clean-shaven. At the academy, haircuts and shaving are part of a strict standard, but when he’s forced to spend a few weeks at Willow’s family’s farm, he relaxes from the academy’s strict code and enjoy a laxer standard.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

He doesn’t care what he drives, but his mother, with her newfound wealth, greeted him Christmas morning with a new sports car. It’s a babe magnetic, which he’d appreciate if he had time for women, but he enrolled in the academy to pursue a military career and that’s his focus … for now.

Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!

Read or Listen: The Cat Who Got Married by Neil S Plakcy @NeilPlakcy #RLFblog #Audiobook #Romance

Today’s featured book is The Cat Who Got Married, and other Purr-fectly Romantic Stories by Neil S Plakcy.

Pilar is a six-toed Abyssinian cat, whose forebears lived with Ernest Hemingway at his house in Key West. When she and her owner, Ryan, move up north, they both have a hard time getting accustomed to the cold weather—until Ryan starts to get pointers from his lovely coworker, Lisa.
In true feline fashion, Pilar can’t resist sticking her six-toed paw into the budding romance between Ryan and Lisa—with charming, and sometimes surprising, results, in the first two stories in this collection.
In “The Temple of Lights,” efficiency expert Robert Lehmann discovers just how much havoc a woman can bring to his life, while the funny-naïve heroine of “You’re Pretty When You Smile, Ima Jean” goes out in search of her life and finds something she wasn’t looking for. And in the final story, “The Cat Who Ran Away,” the sleek, regal Rajah leads Susan to figure out that perhaps you really can go home again.
In the Cat Who Got Married, men and women meet, fall in love and stumble over obstacles in the five charming stories included here from award-winning romance author Neil S Plakcy but the ending is always a happy one.

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?
No. I published two other Christian romances last year – Blast from Her Past and a novella called Christmas in Meadow Creek.
this book is part of a series?
    No.
you lost sleep while writing this book?
Maybe a little. My first round of edits was pretty extensive, and I had a super short deadline from my editor. But I made it!
you did research for this book?
A little. Just minor things like how long of a drive between two cities and what type of injury would require physical therapy.
some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)
No. All humans other than the mention of an elderly neighbor’s dog.
this book has more than one genre?
    Nope. It’s a straight-up contemporary Christian romance.
you speak more than one language?
No. Unless you count my four years of high school Spanish, which allows me to catch a few words and phrases here and there.
you grew up where you live now?
Yes. After fifteen years living elsewhere, I returned to my hometown a couple summers ago.
    you love to read?
Yes, though I don’t have time to do it as much as I’d like to.
    you are never late?
Well … Overall, I’m fairly punctual. But having two kids and so much going on in life makes me two to five minutes late wherever I go. Not bad, I guess.
    you love pizza?
Absolutely! We have it weekly at our house.
    you love sushi?
Never tried it, but never want to!
    you have a pet?
    No pets.

Moonlight Match by Kristina Knight @AuthorKristina #RLFblog #sweetromanceWelcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

    Moonlight Match by Kristina Knight

    Genre: Sweet romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG
Aster Harrington believes in love but love doesn’t seem to believe in her. She’s hoping Goldie and Ginny, the matchmakers who’ve matched on two generations of Harringtons, can work a little love magic for her…
Some call Ethan Talbot rigid, but he prefers to think of himself as prepared. Unfortunately, when he’s matched with Aster Harrington at Joy Island’s Matchmaking Week, all those carefully prepared plans go out the window. He can get back to finding a suitable wife once he’s home in New York. After all, how much damage can one week in the Bahamas do to his plans?

    QUICK

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
Yes! I write contemporary romance and women’s fiction, although I’m still awaiting a publication date on my first women’s fiction novel!
How do you come up with ideas?…
Ideas come to me all the time – I’ll overhear a bit of a conversation, or people-watching at the mall will make me wonder, or a movie…ideas are everywhere, we just have to look for them!
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
Getting that first draft down. I’m a big believer in “you can’t edit a blank page” and there are times, in every first draft, when I just don’t want to. I’m stuck or I’m not connecting with the characters or…heck, it’s a beautiful, sunshiney day after a long, gray winter…those are the days that I just have to push through because if I don’t get the draft down then I can’t make it pretty – and publishable!
When did you write your first book?…
I’ve been writing stories as long as I can remember. My first attempt at an actual book was in 6th grade – I wrote a girl-power, Three Musketeers story. It was so much fun, and probably completely awful (I lost it, boo!), but it definitely made me want to write more.

    FUN

Leather or lace? – lace, leather makes you sweaty!
Black or red? – black, the better to blend!
Satin sheets or smooth cotton? – the smoothest of cotton
Ocean or mountains? – Ocean. Most of the time.
City life or country life? – Country – but close enough to the city for a night out!
Party life or evening at home? – Evening at home, for sure!
    Dogs or cats? – DOGS!!!!!!!
