Interview with Samantha Brown
What is it that you want,
but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
Hello, I am Samantha Brown, and I managed to persuade Sherry
Gloag to share my story, Name The Day, with you. In answer to this question though,
trust in a close and loving relationship is something I have fantasized about all
my life.
What’s your external complication?
In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
Close relationships is something I have learned will only turn
round and bite your butt. Therefore, I suppose you could say the thing I fear most
is losing my hard won independence.
Tell us about your significant
other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
When I first met Rafael Santini he was a pain in the posterior.
Always phoning up, demanding I paint his portrait in time for Christmas. I mean
I was booked solid and He refused to accept I would not cancel another commission
in order to fit him in.
But, as I got to know him, he intrigued and infuriated me in
equal measures. He loved his family nothing was too much for them. I treasure my
solitude. Don’t get me wrong, I like people, as long as they shut the door behind
them when they leave at the end of my working day.
It took me a long time to trust Rafael, and when I did, he left.
I was devastated. But his leaving forced me to look into my future with new eyes.
I didn’t like what I saw.
What would that person
say about you?
Now there’s a question! *Samantha laughs*. Uncooperative would
be his first impression, because I refused to cow-tow to his outrageous demands.
Spoilt probably, because he has no idea how much work, time and effort goes into
creating an excellent portrait. As he got to know me better, I hope he’d recognize
my strengths, and probably, though I don’t like the thought, he sees my weaknesses,
too. He is, underneath that obsession to please everyone and to do it his way, a
kind man. I have a hard time with that. We argue a lot, so I suppose he’d mention
that too. If you asked him, I hope he’d say he liked me.
What is your family like?
I’m sure you’ve heard about the ‘family form hell’? Well, that
describes mine perfectly. My father forbade me to call him by anything other than
his given name. From my earliest memory he has claimed, when he feels like it, that
he is not my father, and yet when something goes wrong in his life he never hesitates
to tell everyone ‘his daughter is to blame’. He is a controlling, and self-centered
man. And as I was to discover, those were the least of his crimes.
My stepmother, while pleasant enough is not a person to go to
when in need of a cuddle or support.
It took me several years before I could break free and make my
own way in the world. You may think under those circumstances I would find nothing
positive to say about them but I have. They taught me to be independent and that
stood me in good stead when I left home to make a life for myself.
What special skills do
you rely on?
I am a successful portrait artist, so I relay on my ability to
sum up my client fairly quickly. I have to be a good listener, which includes the
silent sub-text of any conversation they offer about themselves. Looking at my client
is not enough to see into their souls, and to create a unique portrait that depicts
the inner truth of my client entails reaching into the depth of the person sitting
in front of me so I can transfer that to my canvas.
If someone from your past
showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?
My former fiance, Harold, who accepted money from my father as
a bribe to marry me, and become my father’s heir to his business.
Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?
Oh, yes. *sigh*. I love the seaside as much as I hate Christmas,
so when I found myself alone on Christmas day I jumped in my car and headed for
the coast. I didn’t relies Rafael followed me, but that scene on the beach? Christmas
has become my favourite time of year. I found love, heart and soul-deep happiness
and family. *Offers a huge, wide smile* Yes, I’m delighted with the way my story
ended. Thank you for asking.

write about this character?
Samantha brown turned up, gave me just a enough information to
catch my interest and proceeded to change her name almost every day until we settled
on Samantha Brown.
Was there anything you discovered about this character that was
a surprise to you?
I am a ‘pantser’ writer so everything about my characters and
their actions is a constant surprise, and often a real inconvenience too.
What do you want to write
next?
I am working on several projects right now, One is a series of
storiesunder the umbrella title of The Magpie Chronicles, and the other is Born
Again. The first is based on superstitions and myths the second on the heroine’s
discovery that the life she held so dear was based on a pack of lies.
