Is It True: Love in a New World by Jessica E Subject @jsubject #RLFblog #NewAdult #boxset

Is It True: Love in a New World by Jessica E Subject @jsubject #RLFblog #NewAdult #boxsetPlay Is It True with today’s guest Jessica E Subject, author of Love in a New World, a New Adult Romance box set. This is a game in which authors answer yes and no questions. They can elaborate on answers as much as they choose.

First, tell us about your book.

An alien prince, a farm girl, two university students from a small town, and more are all ready to begin their lives as adults. They have everything planned out. But when drastic events crush their dreams, they must carve a new path. And they just might find unexpected love along the way.

Includes the New Adult Romances Beyond Reach, Accidental Romance, It Took a Zombie Apocalypse, Hey Santa, and bonus story Alien Kisses at Midnight.

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Genre: New Adult Romance, mostly Sci-Fi, but also some Contemporary
Now, tell us Yes or No for each answer below. Feel free to explain any (or none) of your answers.

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?
No. I have twenty-nine titles published under my name and a pen name I used to use. Love in a New World is a collection of four of my published stories with a bonus story.
this book is part of a series?
No. While all the books included are New Adult Romance, none of them are connected except for the bonus story.
you lost sleep while writing this book?
No. When I first started writing, I used to lose sleep with all the ideas in my head. Now, by the time my head hits the pillow, I’m zonked.
you did research for this book?
For the collection, I didn’t have to do any research as the stories were already written. But, I did do quite a bit research for some of these stories. With Accidental Romance, I still have a binder full of information about dairy farms, farm equipment, farming accidents, and amputations.
some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)
Yes, in that some characters are not from Earth, but other planets in three of the stories. Others might be zombies or cows, but those aren’t the main characters.
this book has more than one genre?
Yes. I mostly write Sci-Fi Romance, which combines those two genres. This box set specifically contains alien romances, a contemporary western romance, and a zombie apocalypse romance. All of them are New Adult, in that the hero and heroine are in their early twenties.
you speak more than one language?
Yes and no. I speak English. I can speak a bit of French, though I’ve forgotten a lot of what I learned in school. And with my daughter being a huge K-pop fan, I’ve learned a couple Korean phrases.
you grew up where you live now?
    Yes. Same city, different house.
    you love to read?
Yes. I have for as long as I can remember.
    you are never late?
Yes. At least I try. I’m usually super early, unless my children are being unusually slow.
    you love pizza?
Yes. Thin whole wheat crust with chicken, spinach, and goat cheese. Though, pepperoni or veggie pizza is great, too.
    you love sushi?
    No.
    you have a pet?
Yes. I have Great Pyrenees / Retriever cross. She’s big and hairy. I’ve had many other pets throughout my life, but she’s big enough, we don’t need another.

    Neverwylde by Linda Mooney @LindaMooney #RLFblog #SciFi #romance

Neverwylde by Linda Mooney @LindaMooney #RLFblog #SciFi #romanceToday’s featured book is Neverwylde 6 by Linda Mooney. Tell us about your story. We’ll have other questions in a moment.

Finally rescued from the half-world, Kyber and Kelen believed the worst was behind them.

    They were wrong.

Another ship has landed on Neverwylde, but are the visitors friend or foe? Kelen, Kyber, and the crew are hoping for a rescue, but preparing for a battle. The fight between Terrans and Seneecians has been put behind by those on the half-planet in order to survive, but the newcomers are not of the same mindset.

Even if they are rescued, where will that leave Kelen and Kyber? With neither being accepted by the other’s race, will they be forced to go their separate ways?

Everyone is hoping for their own happily ever after once and for all. But sometimes the worst terrors don’t come from alien worlds.

    They’re closer to home.

What species/races of people are in your book?

There are two main species of people in this book. The Terrans are from Earth, and the furred Seneecians from the planet Seneecia. For this romance, Kyber, the hero, is Seneecian, and Kelen, the heroine, is Terran.

Do you have non-sentient creatures or animals in your story? If so, what are they?

There are several creatures in this series, deadly and vicious, but the ones that resonate the most are the furries. They’re considered to mostly likely be the dominant species of the half-planet. One in particular, who is named Five because he has five instead of six legs, becomes almost a mascot.

    Language and Culture

What languages are spoken in your story universe?

The Seneecians have their own language, as do the semi-sentient species on Neverwylde. But for the sake of the series, the Seneecians speak “Terranese”. Five and his kind have a language consisting of squeaks and whistles, and the only other species that converses have a translation necklace.

If you created a language for the story, what is it called?

    The Seneecians speak Seneecia.

Please give us a few words in this language and their translation .

When Kyber says “Eelo nok torus nor” to Kelen, it translates to “You are my only one”.

In the culture of your story world, what is different from ours?

There is no basic culture on Neverwylde. This is a half-planet where both Seneecians and Terrans have crash landed, and they spend the series discovering and learning how to survive. Of the few things they’ve realized is that everything comes in threes, or in multiples of three. Everything. Knowing this, they’re able to make some valid guesses and take action, which enable them to endure.

At the same time, however, the Seneecians continue to adhere to the laws of their own world. Although they don’t place such restrictions on the Terrans, they maintain them among themselves.

What special laws are important to your story world?

As mentioned, the number 3 plays an integral part of this series. Not coincidentally, there are six books in this now-completed series.

As a whole, Neverwylde should not exist. It appears to break all rules of physics and science. In short, it is a half-planet, missing one entire portion of the world, yet is still able to maintain an atmosphere, gravity, and sustain plants and wildlife. Our survivors spend the series learning how to adapt to such a planet as they continue to discover new things. And face the dangers within head-on.

What rights (such as equality) are challenges for your characters?

Seneecians and Terrans are mortal enemies, and have been for decades. But on Neverwylde, they are faced with the very real possibility that, unless they call a temporary truce and join forces to combat the dangers that appear, no one will survive.

What makes things more intriguing is that Kelen and Kyber are drawn to each other, to the dissatisfaction of the others. How they learn to love is a testament to the heart, as they take the time to learn and accept their differences. Inevitably, the others come to accept the couple, and their union further cements the truce and growing friendships between the species.

    Story Setting

Describe one of the worlds where your story takes place .

Five of the six books take place on Neverwylde. This half-planet looks as if someone with a galactic-sized knife sliced the world into two pieces. In several scenes, the survivors stand on a slab that extends outward into space itself, where they can see nothing but the universe above, around, and below them.

There are temples on the planet’s surface. They later discover these temples house a transporter device that can take them to various locations deep within the planet’s core.

The planet’s interior is laced with interconnecting tunnels and corridors, some of which are high enough to enable them to walk upright, and others which require them to crawl on hands and knees. These tunnels lead to larger rooms, each of which is bathed in a particular color (which they discover corresponds to a button on the teleportation slab.)

It’s within those tunnels and rooms that they are confronted by dangerous creatures, as well as natural catastrophes such as earthquakes and rock slides.

    What makes this world unique?

What makes Neverwylde unique is that it defies the laws of science and physics that both the Terrans and Seneecians are accustomed to facing. Which means they have to suspend their initial beliefs and re-learn in order to survive. That includes the types of creatures they face.

Tell us about the age of the culture in your story, i.e., are the people part of an ancient civilization, a newly formed group within an established culture, pioneer colonists, etc.

This story takes place in the far distant future. People of Earth have become a major power in space. Although it’s not made clear how advanced these people have become, to know there is now only one major language from the planet gives one an idea of how much society has changed.

The last book of the series spends time on Seneecia itself. Even though Seneecias are a war-like race, their cities are ultra-modern, consisting of towering, spiraling buildings and wide open plazas with little to no visible vegetation.

What food or drink is available to your characters?

Upon crash landing, both species rely on packets of emergency rations. But once those are gone, they’re forced to drink the planet’s water, and eat from the vegetation they find there (after the doctor has deemed it safe to eat or drink). Later, they learn to eat the creatures they have to kill, as well as other life forms they find along the way.

In what ways was it helpful to have a map (or sketch of one) for your story? (Provide a link to an image, if available)

I’ve uploaded several images which I used as reference when writing this series.

    http://lindamooney.com/NeverwyldePics.htm

    Character Physiology

What are the physical characteristics of the race/species of your main characters?

Seneecians are humanoid, but they look nothing like Terrans. Every inch of their muscular bodies are covered in short fur. Some of their pelts are curly, while others are smooth. Differing colors/variations of shades and hues make them easy to tell one from another. Kyber, the hero, is pure black.

Their hands and feet bear massive claws and talons. Similar to cats, they’re able to extend those razor-sharp talons from the tips of their fingers. In addition, their spiked teeth can also extend from their gums, making hand-to-hand combat ferocious and bloody.

Their genitals are kept within their body cavity and covered with a genital cup until the need to procreate. They wear sandals and a leather-like, sleeveless uniform with a short shirt that resembles that of ancient Roman soldiers.

What physical differences exist in the way your characters communicate (i.e., telepathy, empathic abilities, etc.) with each other?

Although Terrans cannot speak Seneecian, Seneecians can speak Terranese.

What differences, if any, exist in the way your characters reproduce?

Terrans and Seneecians are capable of having sex, with some differences. For one thing, male Seneecians don’t have nipples, although Kyber does inform Kelen that females of his kind do have breasts.

In addition, once penetration takes place, the male does not “rock in and out” like a human male. His hips do not move. Instead, he firmly holds the female steady, and his erection moves in and out like a piston.

Are there more than two genders in your story world? If so, what are they?

Among the furries, such as with Five, it takes three to procreate. It isn’t explained any further, but it falls neatly into the category of “everything in threes” that is a major component of the series.

    Sharing World Building Expertise

Please give us three tips you find helpful when creating a story world:

Literally, the sky’s the limit. When it comes to topography, geography, creatures, or circumstances, you have carte blanche. However, a few things have to be taken into consideration. For example, not all planets are like Earth. Reference the atmosphere, the gravity, even the color of the sky and sun(s).

Also, when you refer to aliens, not every species is going to look like someone who resembles an Earth woman or man. Unless, of course, that person is a descendant from Earth, or is able to transform their body to look like one.

Finally, don’t feel as if you have to explain every little difference in your new world. You don’t have to give details as to why such-and-such exists or happens. Some things are meant to remain a mystery. Let the reader come up with their own conclusions.

When you researched for your story setting, what kinds of things did you learn?

I’m always trying to find something new, that is still clear to the reader. For example, in the lower inland pools, the huge “sheet” suspended between the mountain-sized pylons on either bank is found to be a power source for the planet’s inhabitants, similar to hydro-electric generators.

What things should writers avoid when building a science fiction world?

Try to avoid stereotypes. Some similarities are good, to enable the reader to get a grasp of whatever concept you’re trying to get across. But try not to emulate other well-known franchises such as Star Wars and Star Trek.

What’s your advice for writers who want to create a solid background for their story world?

Build in limitations. That way you have the ability to create a crisis or build tension when something doesn’t work, or doesn’t move as fast as it should. Put obstacles in the way. And don’t be afraid to challenge or hurt your main characters.

Mission to Mahjundar by Veronica Scott @vscotttheauthor #RLFblog #SciFi #scifiromToday’s featured book is Mission to Mahjundar by Veronica Scott. Tell us about your story. We’ll have other questions in a moment.

An attempted assassination left Princess Shalira blind as a child and, now that she’s of marriageable age, her prospects are not good because of her disability. She’s resigned herself to an arranged marriage rather than face life under the thumb of her cold stepmother. But then she meets Mike Varone, a Sectors Special Forces officer sent to Mahjundar by the intergalactic government to retrieve a ship lost in her planet’s mountains. After Mike saves Shalira from another assassination attempt, she arranges for him to escort her across the planet to her future husband. She’s already falling hard for the deadly offworlder and knows she should deny herself the temptation he represents, but taking Mike along to protect her is the only way she’ll live long enough to escape her ruthless stepmother.

Mike, for his part, resists his growing attraction to the princess; he has a mission on this planet and rescuing the vulnerable but brave princess isn’t it. No matter how much he wishes it could be.

But what should have been an easy trek through Mahjundar’s peaceful lands swiftly turns into an ambush with danger around every turn. Shalira’s marriage begins to seem less like an arranged union and more like yet another planned assassination. The more they work together to survive, the harder it becomes to stop themselves from falling in love. Caught in a race against time, can they escape the hostile forces hunting them and make it off the planet?

What species/races of people are in your book?

Humans descended from Terran colonists and the local population of the planet, who are humanoid.

Do you have non-sentient creatures or animals in your story? If so, what are they?

The legendary ‘cherindor’, which are sacred to the royal family of the planet. They are represented as huge winged felines with barbed tails and three eyes.

    Language and Culture

What languages are spoken in your story universe?

My characters primarily speak the interstellar common language Basic, but people around them speak Mahjundan and other local languages. My military Special Forces hero from the Sectors has been hypnotrained in the primary language before the mission began. He has a guide assigned to assist him with the more regional dialects.

What special laws are important to your story world?

Since the planet isn’t as technologically advanced as many in the Sectors, the hero isn’t supposed to be using ‘modern’ weapons, but he’s brought some on the job anyway. Never be without your trusty blaster in a scifi romance! The heroine, Princess Shalira, has been promised in marriage by her father the emperor, to a feudal warlord as part of a treaty. Part of the plot hinges on the necessity for her to undergo certain rituals and recover tribal clan insignia from her late mother’s tomb. Mike, the hero, gets drawn into this journey and becomes quite enmeshed in the mysticism and magic of the planet while trying to protect her and accomplish his own mission.

What rights (such as equality) are challenges for your characters?

Shalira was left blind as a result of the assassination attempt on her as a child, so she deals with that every day. She is less respected by her people, because she isn’t a ‘perfect’ imperial princess. Ironically one of the fierce indigenous peoples they encounter on the journey view her blindness as making her a perfect messenger to and from their gods. The high priests in the mountain city fight over her, while planning to kill Mike as a sacrifice to their cruel gods.

    Story Setting

    What makes this world unique?

The old gods are fading away on Mahjundar as people turn to worshipping newer deities, but the primitive pantheon still wields power. Shalira is one of the people able to draw on that power, which makes her vulnerable to a number of scheming factions.

Tell us about the age of the culture in your story, i.e., are the people part of an ancient civilization, a newly formed group within an established culture, pioneer colonists, etc

.In the Sectors, one of my world building tenets is that many worlds have been found to have similar species, and human or humanlike races. I leave open to speculation the root cause as to why that should be. Ancient visitors? Or? Mahjundar is the same, with its own unique flora and fauna as well.

What food or drink is available to your characters?

While on the planet Mike eats the same diet as the locals, and has had injects against any toxins that might affect a Terran-descent human. I’d say the main thing everyone has to watch out for is the local black wine, which is highly intoxicating!

In what ways was it helpful to have a map (or sketch of one) for your story? (Provide a link to an image, if available)

I don’t typically do a map or a sketch for my books. I hold the information in my head. My only exception to date has been when I write stories set on large spaceships, where I have drawn a rough model and identified which decks hold what.

What’s your advice for writers who want to create a solid background for their story world?

Make it interesting, be consistent in your details and let your imagination soar. That’s the best part about science fiction – you can establish literally any setting for your story.

You’ve posed a number of detailed questions on language, culture, world building, research, etc., which I’ve chosen not to address today because my primary emphasis in any of my novels is the characters, the romance, the action and the adventure. Long ago I established my overarching framework for the Sectors, which is my interstellar civilization. I do of course develop details for whatever planet the particular story is taking place on, but not to the depth your excellent questions were attempting to measure. As I write each novel I may do research on isolated facets of the particular story – for Mahjundar I spent a lot of time reading up on various causes of blindness, for example, but I also drew heavily on my personal experience with a close friend from college who was blind. I had previously done much research on the Aztecs and the Mayans, aspects of which I applied to some of the indigenous societies my characters encountered. The character Tlazomiccuhtli, the ancient and blood thirsty god worshipped by one tribe on this planet, is based in part on my own encounter with a truly horrific Aztec deity (in statue form luckily) in a Mexico City museum years ago.

Google and Wikipedia are an author’s friends when doing research, as places to start at any rate, and identify other sources to dive more deeply into as needed. (I do have a huge personal library of scholarly tomes to consult for the research that goes into my ancient Egyptian paranormal romances.)

But to a large extent, the conditions encountered on any planet in my scifi universe derive from my own imagination and will only be as detailed and pervasive as the story I’m trying to tell demands. So some of the books may have a lot of planet-specific worldbuilding development – Escape from Zulaire for example – and others quite a bit less.

Prince Richard Sinclair is his brother’s right-hand-man and go-to guy, who excels as the Emperor’s Fireman because he can’t deal with his personal life. He only plays the Imperial Bad Boy because that’s what makes the dukes respect him, despite his age, intelligence, education, and birthright. Delightfully intrigued by Lady Meredith Lauder, his virtual Cinderella, he rescues her from her burdensome family life at the first opportunity.

Scarred by ridicule and neglect, Merry gleefully abandons her family, but she feels she has to work at the Imperial Palace to compensate for Richard’s generosity. Even as he entices her to his bed, she believes she’s being true to her core principles, to never be dependent upon a man, and to pursue a relationship of equals.

But when the Emperor disappears, they realize just how fragile their world really is, both personally and politically. Richard desperately throws himself into governing as Imperial Steward while demanding that everyone search for Matthieu. And Merry plays the part of the ‘supportive girlfriend’ in his hour of need… until two men jeopardize the emotional balance they’ve gained in their lives.

How can Prince Richard deal with the frightful political situation without losing his lover?

    This book contains sexual situations.

What languages are spoken in your story universe?
‘Standard’, which is basically English, is used throughout the galaxy, although individual worlds based on unique cultures tend to retain a lot of their native language. Since Standard is the only ‘world-wide’ language at the start of the Space Era, everyone recognizes it must be used to deal with people from every planet.
In the culture of your story world, what is different from ours?
Royals are derived from the 50 original duchies created by King Kyan Sinclair, the ‘owner’ of the planet Sinclair Demesne who selected his colonists following the guidelines of a charter. A few duchies have come and gone, but the names remain principally the same. A ‘High Royal’ refers to children or grandchildren of a duke; ‘Low Royals’ refer to themselves by how many generations they are removed from High Royals, i.e. first-gen, third-gen.
Since commoners have populated the other three planets in the Empire, also known in the plural as the Sinclair Demesnes, the few Royals on those planets tend to be assigned there for a length of time before being recalled. Emperor Victor establishes his son Phillip as the first Imperial High Governor of Rendel, and Emperor Matthieu’s generation sees the first Viceroy of Marabelle, his brother Theo, who expands the Empire through three active planetary volumes accessible through natural wormholes.
What rights (such as equality) are challenges for your characters?
Women’s rights are guaranteed, but their traditions are so strong that almost no one breaks out of the ‘typical feminine role’. The first book of my series, Dignity, began challenging that narrative, featuring a female scientist; its companion novel, Majesty, wrestles with the issue directly and through long-lasting conflicts.
Describe one of the worlds where your story takes place.
Sinclair Demesne is the capital of the Empire of Sinclair Demesnes, a four-planet polity that maneuvers to become the premier trade and political empire in the galaxy. The enormous wealth of Empress Felice’s stargates is used to establish and maintain the Galactic Assembly, and she makes plans to further the Empire via the three habitable planets beyond Marabelle. Their population has had the advantage of living on the planet with the closest-to-Terran habitability ever found, and although most traditions are conservative, the overall mindset of the Imperial Family is progressive.
Tell us about the age of the culture in your story, i.e., are the people part of an ancient civilization, a newly formed group within an established culture, pioneer colonists, etc.
Sinclair Demesne belonged to billionaire scientist Kyan Sinclair, who selected the dukes who would populate their own colonies. This occurred in 102 S.E. (Space Era), although the Empire grew to prominence with the marriage of Emperor Victor to Empress Felice in 572 S.E. Primarily European in descent, the population nevertheless had dukes from most of the cultures of Terra, and twenty generations of intermarriages between fifty-one ruling families serve to connect the planet through its capital, the Sinclair Urban District.
What food or drink is available to your characters?
The majority of foods are the same, derived from seeds and stock brought to Sinclair Demesne from Terra. Demesnian flora (carbs and simple proteins) has been well-adapted to their diets, with a small number of Demesnian fauna species (complex proteins) adapted for human consumption. They import a lot of their luxury foods and use a minimum amount of grains – their desserts tend to be fruit and cream confections instead of wheat-based – and they’ve always had active horticultural breeding programs.
When you researched for your story setting, what kinds of things did you learn?
I’m currently working on two prequels, one of which describes Kyan Sinclair’s process in setting up his new planet. As a result, I’ve learned to build rocket stoves and use adobe, I’ve researched major construction projects such as steel foundries, and my math and chemistry skills have gotten a workout while calculating the practicalities of moving 122,000 people to a new planet!

Stressing Orol from Dark Flight @CynthiaSax #RLFblog #SciFi #RomanceToday we’re reading about Orol from Dark Flight by Cynthia Sax. Tell us about your book.

His mission. His challenge. His forever.

Orol, the Refuge’s second-in-command, has been given what he believes is a simple mission—escort two human females to the settlement. The winged warrior arrives at the meeting site to find one of the females missing and the other aiming a gun at his head. To rescue the first, he must capture the second. Once he has Rhea in his talons, however, he realizes he never wants to let her go.

Her enemy. Her captor. Her everything.

Rhea doesn’t trust anyone. She certainly doesn’t follow commands issued by a gorgeous flying male with glittering eyes, a beautiful face, and a seductive touch. Orol is dominant, edged with darkness, and determined to find her sister. Rhea will do anything to prevent that, even if it means playing sensual games of submission with her powerful enemy, seducing him into forgetting everything except her.

Dark Flight is a stand-alone Sci Fi Romance set in a gritty, dark world.

    Stressing Orol

Every hero has a story. He has a background, a history, and a past. This interview allows us to meet a hero and get to know him better, by focusing on how he handles being relaxed, as well as how he handles stress.

    Age: Many, MANY human lifespans
Birthplace: In a Humanoid Alliance laboratory
    Profession: Genetically designed to kill
Ethnicity: Half Human, Half Oberon Flying Death
Species (for scifi/fantasy characters): Modified Humanoid

    The Hero’s Relaxed Side

This hero is at a party. Considering his story, describe the party.
Orol is surrounded by the top warriors in the universe. There’s a melee. The last being standing wins. They’re given their choice of any blade. Orol chooses to use his talons.
How does the hero feel about being this particular party, and what body language is he displaying that gives it away?
Orol LOVES to fight and is excited to be at this party. His talons are extended. His wings are spread. He will keep his feet on the floor to give the other party-goers a chance.
Is he more likely to mingle or remain aloof?
He searches out beings to fight, giving each of them a rough time before engaging.
If he drinks, what is his drink of choice at this party?
He seldom drinks and never when he’s fighting.
How much drink is his usual?
During breaks,he sips any beverage he’s given, taunting other party-goers.
The hero figures out where the hiding places are and then goes there. Is it to hide, to avoid someone, or to go drag a friend back to the party?
Orol goes there to avoid Scales, a friend of his. He has agreed to never fight him.
Is he likely to latch onto a friend and stay with him/her and ignore others, or is he the friend that others latch onto?
He prefers to fight alone but will compete with friends for the most kills.
If someone picked a fight at this party, how is the hero going to handle it?
This party is one big fight and Orol is right in the middle of it.
Is the hero the one most likely to get tossed out of the party, or the one who does the tossing?
He’s not leaving until he wants to leave and he won’t want to leave until all of the fighting is done.
Will he know when to leave, or stay late and make a nuisance of himself?
When the fighting is done, he’s leaving.

    The Hero’s Stressed Out Side

How does the hero handle it if the cops or some other authority figure pulls him aside when he was blameless in a situation?
Orol will make a joke and walk away.
How does the hero react to hearing a scream?
    Orol will fly to investigate.
If he sees someone being assaulted, what is the FIRST thing that crosses his mind?
    Protect.
If he sees someone being assaulted, what is the FIRST thing he does?
Stand between the abuser and his victim, using his body to shield the victim.
This hero attempts to rescue someone and realizes that he is in over his head. The odds are against him and there is no way out. He is going to get his butt handed to him. What does he do?
Orol calls Balvan or one of his other brethren for help. If help doesn’t come, well, he’s a warrior. All warriors eventually die in battle. He has accepted that.
The hero runs into the one person from his past he wanted to avoid. He can’t get out of the situation and must interact with him/her in some way. What does he do?
He makes jokes and acts as though there was never any conflict between them.
Someone younger than the hero is in charge of the situation, and they are handling it badly, perhaps bungling things. How does the hero deal with it?
As long as the situation won’t kill anyone, he lets the being bungle things. Sometimes you need to fall on your a$$ to learn how to stand on your feet.
The hero is in physical pain but must bear up under it and keep going. What does he tell himself in order to get through the situation?
He has been through worse…. And, unfortunately, he has.
What mentor’s words come to mind in a bad situation?
Kralj is the closest Orol has to a mentor.
What lesson from his past gets him through a stressful situation?
    Every situation is survivable.

    It Takes a Cat Burglar by Cailin Briste @CailinBriste #RLFblog #SciFi #Romance

It Takes a Cat Burglar by Cailin Briste @CailinBriste #RLFblog #SciFi #RomanceToday’s featured book is It Takes a Cat Burglar: A Thief in Love Suspense Romance, a sci-fi suspense romance by Cailin Briste.

Sebastian St. Croix is a wealthy businessman with a specialized hobby. He steals things. As in entering without permission and purloining expensive artifacts and art objects. This could be his flaw, a penchant for taking what doesn’t belong to him, but it isn’t. He’s a thief in a white hat. The items he takes have all been previously stolen from public museums and are in private collections. He returns these priceless works of art once he appropriates them.

Like most romance heroes, Sebastian is handsome. When Darcelle sees him for the first time after a year of interacting through notes this is what she thinks. “He was gorgeous. Only a master sculptor could have formed a face of such perfect symmetry. The masculinity of his high cheekbones, angled jaw, and straight brows was softened by his exquisite lips. From beneath black locks slanting over his forehead, pale green eyes stared at her.”

On the surface it doesn’t look as though Sebastian has any flaws.

    Rich? Check.

    Good looking? Check.

Uses his skills for good? Check.

But a romance book isn’t as fun to read if the hero doesn’t have at least one flaw he must struggle with or overcome to find his happily ever after. The aspect of Sebastian’s personality that makes him an exceptional cat burglar also makes his love life one of physical release with no long-term connections. He must be in control. And then Darcelle Lebeau enters his life. She exposes that flaw, so that even Sebastian recognizes he must change or lose her.

It Takes a Cat Burglar is a novella, so the length limits creating a hero with multi-layered flaws. The best full-length romances are a spider web of the hero and heroine’s flaws, intractable situations, and devious villains. I personally love a hero who struggles to relinquish control. When he lets go, the result is so satisfying.

Which flaws are your favorites? Are there some flaws that would make a hero unacceptable? What about dark heroes? The darker the hero, the more flaws he has, but getting a bad boy to fall in love is a huge favorite among romance readers. So, what part of the bad boy persona is flawed and what shouldn’t change? Let me know what you think.

It Takes a Cat Burglar: A Thief in Love

When Darcelle Lebeau throws off the invisible chains that keep her bound to her family, she discovers a new vocation. Tempted to enter the illegal playground of a man she nicknames Matou, she becomes a cat burglar in training. Deeply ensnared with each task he entices her to fulfill, she fails to discover his identity and true intentions.

Sebastian St. Croix, a wealthy businessman, has a dark side. He’s a thief, a cat burglar who steals art and historical objects. For one year, he trains Darcelle to become his assistant, remaining incognito, observing her from afar. His admiration grows along with his desire for her with every phase-one challenge she completes. Phase two will test the limits of his control. Hands-on personal training? Yes. Sex? No. With his sister’s happiness at stake, nothing, not even the tempting Darcelle Lebeau, can interfere with accomplishing the biggest break-in of his career.
