Colton Blake from Scorpio Sons 1 by @nhysglover #RLFblog #Romance

The character interview allows a hero or heroine to tell
readers about himself or herself. Today’s interview is with Colton Blake from Scorpio
    Sons 1: Colton.

    Interview with Colton Blake

    Tell us about yourself, please.
What do you want to know? Talking about myself isn’t my thing.
Staying in the shadows is my thing. Okay, I guess I have to do this, don’t I? Well,
my name is Colton Blake and I’m one of a hundred genetically-engineered clone warriors
who got stuck with a heavy dose of panther DNA. I guess you could say I was a test
tube baby and when it came time for us to be hatched – I can never work out what
to call it. We weren’t born; we were just taken out of our gestation tubes. Anyway,
whatever you call it, once it happened, me and my brothers were secretly removed
from the labs and given to the Résistance, a covert organization fighting the Guild,
the monsters who created us as their own personal army.
The people who raised me were decent and loving people. Sometimes
I think I see that time in my life through rose colored glasses, because it can’t
have been as good as I remember it, can it? But compared to what came later I guess
it was pretty perfect. Anyway, my folks were killed in a car accident when I was
seven, and I was put into foster care.
I wasn’t there long before my cat got activated and I killed
my foster father. I did say I got a heavy dose of panther DNA, didn’t I? That latent
DNA gets activated in extreme situations, usually around puberty. Mine came earlier
because I’d just lost my folks, I was living with strangers, and I was watching
the bastard who called himself my foster-dad molesting one of the girls in his care.
I just cracked, and when I came back to myself there was a dead man on the floor.
I freaked and ran. After that I lived on the streets, playing vigilante like ‘Dexter’,
until Chase found me and brought me into the Scorpio Sons. For about five years
now I’ve worked covertly with my brothers to bring justice to those who consider
    themselves above the law.
Authors call what you want but cannot have “the conflict”
    — what is yours?
I want to protect my mate from danger. You’d think that’d be
easy, considering I could kill a man with my bare hands at seven, wouldn’t you?
But it’s not. I’m forced to stand at her side while she takes on our enemies. My
cat (that’s what we call the panther aspect of ourselves) fights me every step of
the way. See, my human side knows Lyss has her part to play in saving the world,
but my cat’s primal urge is to lock her up somewhere safe so I can get on with my
job. So far my human side has mostly won the fight.
What can you not do (but need to do) during this story?
Trust. Lyss is my world, and yet I can’t seem to trust the bond
we created. I’m a work in progress in lots of ways. Luckily, she’s okay with that.
What inner doubt causes you the most difficulty?
That Alyssa can’t possibly love someone like me; that I can’t
be good enough for her. I’m just a killer who grew up on the streets. Maybe she
just thinks she loves me because I saved her life four years ago. I don’t know.
Sometimes I feel like gelignite. I only need the smallest bump to explode. My intensity
scares me. Especially the intensity of my feelings for Lyss.
In the story world your author created, explain what it is
    you fear most and why.
I fear losing Lyss. The bonds we Sons form with our genetically-engineered
mates is as close as any bond between two individuals can be. It’s instantaneous,
powerful, and all-consuming. The idea of losing Lyss guts me. So, yeah, I live everyday
afraid that she’ll wake up to herself and leave me – or she’ll be taken by the Guild
and I won’t be able to save her.
Tell us about your significant other, that person who makes
    living worthwhile.
That’s Alyssa. I’ve probably raved on about her too much already.
But maybe not about her specifically; just about how I feel about her. So… yeah,
I met her, for want of a better word, when I saved her from rapists at her college.
Back then I was still doing my Dexter thing. So I let my dark passenger out on those
    bastards.
As I was the first of the Sons to find my mate, I didn’t have
a clue what was going on when I came face-to-face with her. Suddenly, a sex drive
I never knew I had, came to life. So I got out of there fast, real fast, before
she ended up having to fight me off too. I didn’t see her again for four years.
But I never forgot her. That would’ve been impossible.
Okay, doing it again. You wanted me to tell you about Alyssa
herself. So, yeah, Alyssa Aimes became America’s Sweetheart after almost winning
a talent contest on TV. You’d expect that image to be artificial or something, but
there’s nothing staged about Lyss. She really is as sweet, and beautiful, and talented
as she seems on TV. America got that right, at least. (I’m Canadian, can’t you tell?)
She’s sort of fragile too, which makes me feel like I might break her if I’m not
careful. But even though she doesn’t see herself as strong and brave, she keeps
proving she is, even when I wish she didn’t have to. And did I mention she’s beautiful?
Not in a glamorous way. She’s more like the pretty girl-next-door type. Can I quit
    now?
What would that person say about you?
More? You’d make a great shrink. Maybe I should’ve been lying
on a couch for all this. Okay…Lyss would say I’m intense, moody, and have a hair-trigger
temper. The first time I met her I’d just injured or killed her would-be rapists.
So she knew right from the start what I was; what I’m capable of. But she loves
me anyway. Maybe it’s my cat that attracts her cat. Maybe that’s what makes her
so accepting of me and my many faults. But yeah, if you asked her about me, she’d
end up saying something mushy like I’m everything she ever dreamed of and more.
    What is your family like?
I don’t have any except for Lyss. And yeah, I guess my cloned
brothers count as family too. It’s weird, you know, having the Sons in my life–
like finding your identical twin you were separated from at birth. But not just
finding him once, but over and over again. We’ve only tracked down 40 or so of us
yet, but we’ll find the rest. That’s what we do – save the world, find our brothers
and the Mates who were made for us.
What special skills do you rely on?
Huh, where do I start? My cat DNA means I have enhanced speed,
strength, and sensual acuity, (I can see in the dark and hear things a normal human
    couldn’t, that sorta stuff). I’m a super-soldier. Oh and I’m a pretty good tactician.

    About the Writer

After a lifetime of teaching others to appreciate the written
word, Aussie author Nhys Glover finally decided to make the most of the Indie Book
Revolution to get her own written word out to the world. Now, with over 100,000
of her ebooks downloaded internationally and a winner of 2013 SFR Galaxy Award for
‘The Titan Drowns’, Nhys finds her words, too, are being appreciated.
Living in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales of England, Nhys these
days spends most of her time “living the dream” by looking out over the
moors from her window as she writes the kind of novels she loves to read. The ones
that are a little bit steamy, a little bit different, and wholly romantic.
What was your biggest challenge in writing this book?
Coming up with distinctly different characters for all the Sons,
who are basically all the same person. I did a lot of reading about identical twins,
because that’s what clones are. Then I drew up an astrological natal chart for the
Sons’ ‘birth’ and started assigning qualities to each from that chart. Yes, I used
to be a professional astrologer. It taught me a lot about people.
Why did you choose this character for the interview today?
Colt is wonderfully intense and complex. A real Heathcliff. I
love deep and moody. And as he’s the first of the Sons to find his mate, his was
    the steepest learning curve.
When writing the book, what did you discover about this character
    that surprised you?
My characters are always surprising me. I’m more reporter than
novelist. I just follow along behind my people, recording what goes on, and not
knowing what will happen in the end until I get there. So, Colt was no exception.
He handled putting Lyss in danger a lot better than I expected. He’s like Alyssa
in that way; doesn’t see how amazing he really is. But he proved it to me.
Are any sequels planned for this book?
There already are six in the series. The seventh is on pre-release
and will be available on the 20 May.

    About the Book

    Title Scorpio Sons 1: Colton
    Genre SF/Shifter Romance
    Author Nhys Glover
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Staring into glowing cat-eyes, while her attackers lay like broken
dolls in the snow around her, shouldn’t have been a turn-on. But it was. She shouldn’t
consider the man who killed to save her from her rapists a hero. But she does. She
shouldn’t feel as if she belongs to that hero, mind body and soul, but there’s no
way she can deny it. And the hardest part for Alyssa Aimes to get her head around,
besides his extraordinary eyes: the knowledge that she’ll never see him again.
But four years later, Colton Blake does come back into her life,
just as dramatically as he left it. And this time she’s determined to keep him there,
even if she has to risk her recording contract and her life to do it.
For Colt, much has changed in four years. No longer a homeless
drifter with a dangerous secret, he has found his place among the Scorpio Sons,
an elite band of genetically engineered cloned warriors charged with bringing to
justice a secret cabal that has been exploiting the world for millennia. But one
thing that hasn’t changed during that time: his obsession with Alyssa, the stranger
he met just once and can’t seem to forget. But now his mission has brought Alyssa
    back into his life. And with her comes a secret she doesn’t even realize she harbors;
a secret that could bring not only Colt to his knees, but the whole band of the
    Scorpio Sons along with him.

    The Cowboy’s Little Surprise @BarbaraWDaille #RLFblog #romance

This quick interview includes info about the author, and introduces
    the story.

    About the Author

Barbara White Daille lives with her
husband in the sunny U.S. Southwest, where they don’t mind the lizards in their
front yard but could do without the scorpions in the bathroom.
A writer from the age of nine and a
novelist since eighth grade, Barbara is now an award-winning author with a number
    of novels to her credit.
The first book in The Hitching Post
Hotel series, The Cowboy’s Little Surprise, was just released (April 2015) and will
be followed by A Rancher of Her Own in July and an as-yet-untitled book in December.

    Interview with Barbara White Daille

Why did you write this book?
I loved the idea of a matchmaking grandpa
and was so happy that my editors liked it, too! That was how the new series was
conceived. As for this first book, The Cowboy’s Little Surprise, one of my favorite
romance plotlines is the second-chance story, where the hero and heroine have had
a past relationship that didn’t work out and are now brought together under less
    than the best of circumstances.
A subcategory of second chances is the
secret-baby story, in which the past relationship results in the heroine becoming
pregnant by the hero, who never learns until the current story that he’s become
a daddy. When I wanted a hero and heroine for the grandfather’s first matchmaking
scheme, the secret-baby story just seemed like a natural.
What is your favorite genre to read?
         Romance!
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including
    your own)?
This is a tough question as there’s
such a long list to choose from. So…I think I’ll regress a bit and pick someone
from my favorite childhood books—Nancy Drew. She solved so many fascinating mysteries
and, later in the series, traveled to so many wonderful places with her friends.
And she was smart at figuring out clues. I always wanted to be her when I grew up.
What are you working on at the moment, and what will we see
    from you in coming months?
I’m currently working on revisions for
book 3 in the Hitching Post Hotel series. It has no title yet but will be out in
December 2015. This is the story of Jed Garland’s middle granddaughter and the one
he’s almost certain is going to spoil his matchmaking record.
Andi was recently widowed and left with
two small children. Mitch is an L.A. cop recovering from an undercover op gone bad.
He returns to his hometown of Cowboy Creek to recuperate, and there he finds his
teenaged crush back again, too. He wants nothing to do with the girl who walked
off and broke his heart one summer…but of course, our matchmaking grandpa doesn’t
intend to let that stop him!
Please tell us about your latest book.
The Cowboy’s Little Surprise is book
1 in the Hitching Post Hotel series.

    Changing Priorities @LloydAMeeker @MacCrowne Marjorie Belson #RLFblog #FightCancer

    Romance Lives Forever
    From Kayelle:
For three days I’m sharing stories by various authors about
how they or a family member faced cancer. Reading their posts is inspiring and
touching. The importance of friends and family, and having a support system is
vital. From what I’ve read, the key to success includes being able to ask for
help — and then being willing to accept it. It’s a lesson I’ve had in my own
life during various times. I don’t accept help well. It’s something I fight
with all the time. I’d like to think “I’ve got this” — but sometimes
    I don’t have as good a grip as I thought I did. I have a friend who’s dealing
with cancer right now. My business partner’s brother just died from cancer. It
affects all of us. Reading these helps me understand better. I hope I’m even
half as good a friend as those you’ll read about in this series.
I’m presenting these as an opportunity for the authors to
share their real life stories, as well as their fictional ones. Links to follow
the authors and to purchase their books are provided.

Today’s authors are Lloyd A Meeker, Mackenzie Crowne, and Marjorie Belson.

Lloyd A Meeker: A Change in Priorities

    The Companion
    In June of 2003, I went on a four-day
bike ride to raise money for AIDS services, and apparently the tumor in my stomach
(which I already knew about) started to bleed under the strain of covering close
to 100 miles a day. I soldiered on because, well, because it’s manly to soldier
on, until a month later a pulmonary embolism slowed me down and sped up the stomach
surgery. At the age of 55 I spent my first night in a hospital. It was the beginning
    of my new life.
That night, hopped up on morphine,
I got a very clear message from myself. I’d always Carpe diem! said I wanted to write novels.
I’d even started one when I’d come out eight years earlier. The message I got was
that if I was serious about writing novels I’d better get busy, because I was now
on bonus time and there was no telling how long I’d have.
Since that night, writing has been
my creative priority. That means I’ve not done a bunch of other fun things, but
I’m set on getting down as many stories as I might have to write before I say good
night. I had another cancer diagnosis and more surgery in 2004, but I’m now ten
years clear and working on my fifth novel.
I am so grateful for the cancer that
forced me to refocus my life and own my new mission. Since my diagnosis I’ve lost
a niece and several friends to cancer, so I know not everyone is lucky enough to
get as far as I have. In spite of everything, the last eleven years have been the
sweetest and finest of my life, and I’m not done yet. If I can make it through,
    I know others can, too.
It hasn’t been a joyride, exactly.
If you’re dealing with cancer now I hope you have someone you can lean on when you
can’t be strong all on your own. My husband Bob held me and encouraged me and let
me cry when I was so afraid and full of despair that I couldn’t think right. Let
someone who loves you help hold you on course, help you focus on what matters. I
wish you every success on your journey. Never forget, countless brave souls are
cheering you on—you won’t be the first to win, but you’re in great company!

    About the Book

    Genre: Mystery/Suspense
    The Companion
Shepherd Bucknam hasn’t had a lover in more than a decade and
doesn’t need one. As a Daka, he coaches men in the sacred art and mystery of sexual
ecstasy all the time, and he loves his work. It’s his calling. In fact, he’s perfectly
content—except for the terrors of his recurring nightmare and the ominous blood-red
birthmarks on his neck. He’s convinced that together they foretell his early and
    violent death.
When Shepherd’s young protégé is murdered, LAPD Detective Marco
Fidanza gets the case. The two men are worlds apart: Marco has fought hard for everything
he’s accomplished, in sharp contrast to the apparent ease of Shepherd’s inherited
wealth—but their mutual attraction is too hot for either of them to ignore.
Shepherd swears he’ll help find his protégé’s killer, but Marco
warns him to stay out of it. When an influential politician is implicated, the police
investigation grinds to a halt. Shepherd hires his own investigator. Marco calls
it dangerous meddling. As their volatile relationship deepens, Shepherd discovers
his nightmares might not relate to the future, but to the deadly legacy of a past
life—a life he may have to revisit before he can fully live and love in this one.

Dancing on the Other Side: Mackenzie Crowne

Believe it or not, I experienced many
encouraging moments in my battle against stage III breast cancer. Yes, I’m a survivor.
I say that now, proudly and with conviction, but that wasn’t always the case. When
I was first diagnosed in October 2007, I looked upon the many survivors I met and
didn’t feel I deserved the title. They danced, victorious,
    on the
    A Song for Sophie

other side of the abyss, while I staggered under quiet disbelief.

    It’s said a person doesn’t get cancer,
a family does. I agree with that sentiment, but the statement is incomplete. The
author forgot to include friends. Mine were with me every step of the way as I navigated
the abyss to join those survivors on the other side. My friends helped in so many
ways, but one in particular makes me smile to this day. My protocol included several
radical treatments, including chemo. When I mentioned dealing with the certain loss
of my hair by purchasing a few hats, my girlfriends promptly planned a Mad Hatter
party and, in the midst of surgeries and debilitating treatments, sixteen awesome
women lifted my tired spirits with an evening of silliness and love.
In the end, thanks to my friends and
family across the country, seventy-four hats were presented to cover my soon-to-be-bald
head. They ranged from a gorgeous creation one might see along the promenade at
the Kentucky Derby to a ridiculous monstrosity in the shape of a turkey. I still
have the few I wore proudly during my battle and donated the rest to a local breast
    cancer center.
    Obviously, my girlfriends rock, but
there is a deeper lesson I hope this post imparts to those of you fighting your
own battle. That is, the importance of accepting help. With a cancer diagnosis,
it’s only natural to internalize your focus, but cancer affects more than just the
patient. It touches the lives of everyone who loves them. Don’t get me wrong, fighting
this battle sucks, but friends and family have it worse in many ways. They stand
on the sideline, watching helplessly while you do what’s necessary to beat this
senseless disease. They need to help where they can. Let them. You’ll be glad you
    did.
In the meantime, stay strong, breathe
deep and take each step as it comes. I’m dancing on the other side. I’ll see you
    there.

    Nothing is Promised: Marjorie Belson

    Undefined and vulnerable, I often
felt as if I were crashing backward through space, and found myself slipping into
    a post-operative depression after my bi-lateral mastectomy on August 2, 2001. In
order to keep what remained of my sanity, I returned to work too soon, but misjudged
the level of my stamina, as well as the fact that much of one’s life is uncontrollable.
My first day back at work: September
    10, 2001.
How could I, as well as thousands
of others know that the next day, September 11, 2001, evil men with twisted minds
had marked my city, New York, as a site for mass destruction, and would take perverse
delight in their slaughter of innocents. In seconds, a still autumn sky would become
animated with flames and smoke, choking the air with the sickening smell of lives
    dissolved.
My response to the news of the first
tower being hit was one of disbelief. After the second plane crashed into the second
tower, I knew my city was under attack. My first
    Nothing is Promised

thoughts were for the safety of
my own family. Desperate to know if my son and daughter-in-law were safe, and only
after seeing them both later that day, could I believe that they were indeed out
    of harm’s way.

The relief in being alive was tempered
by the overwhelming loss of so many in a matter of minutes. Like countless others,
I watched television, transfixed by its unrelenting coverage of our nation’s greatest
catastrophe. So many had survived personal tragedy only to be brought down, the
victims of time and place. Humbled by a world gone mad, I offered my prayers for
the souls and families of those who’d perished. In an instant, I’d become an insignificant
speck and found it difficult to justify space for my personal trials.
While struggling to make sense out
that which made no sense at all, I made an effort to accept that each step of my
own unpredictable journey was a sign for me to live my life responsibly. I believed
that I’d been given a chance to redefine my soul and thereby grant myself a sanctuary
from the world in which I had come to dwell.
For me, as for many of us, each step
forward was painful to take, but the need to move forward was far greater than the
pull to go backward. Unless I accepted that my life had been deeply altered, I could
remain trapped, frozen in a world of memories.
In truth, I’d been granted the opportunity
to redirect and renew my faith in myself and in my ability to move to a level of
profound and urgent awareness of the potential richness of my life. Cancer had attacked
my body and challenged me in my entirety to face my life as it was and to decide
whether I would choose to self immolate or rise again like a Phoenix.

Hiro Tanaka prepared for a life as a samurai warrior. But his
world changed when Ja-pan’s feudal system was abolished by the Emperor. Now, he
must find a new vocation. Disillusioned with fighting and violence, he travels alone,
    going north to the island
    of Hokkaido. Many other samurai
wander through the country and are known as ronin. Some have forsaken their honorable
way to prey on the less fortunate.
Hanako Shimizu experienced first-hand the devastation caused
by these disreputable wanderers. The previous winter, they raided her farm and killed
her husband. Now, she needs to rebuild but has no money and no prospects — except
for the dubious intentions of the town merchant.
When Hiro, tired of his wandering, encounters Hanako in the market,
arguing with the merchant, he poses as her late husband’s cousin then offers to
help her on the farm in ex-change for a place to stay. Working on the land, Hiro
finally finds the peace he has been seeking. But the reappearance of the rogue ronin,
led by an unscrupulous leader from Hiro’s past, forces him to take up his swords
again. But now, the stakes are higher.
This time, he’s fighting from the heart.

    A desperate man…
“Lucky” Leroy Morgan led a charmed
life, until he was murdered. Now he’s stuck in Limbo, unwilling to move on after
catching a glimpse of the future he was supposed to have and the amazing woman who
was destined to be his. Using the Northern Lights as a conduit back to earth, he
attempts to seduce her in her dreams, hoping to anchor himself to the physical plane.
If he doesn’t win her heart, he’ll be forever lost.
    A tempted woman…
Gemma Star is fairly conventional considering
her hippie upbringing. Her biggest fear is that she’ll end up like her Tarot card
reading mother, who isn’t all there. When Gemma starts having out-of-this-world
sex with a dream lover, she starts to wonder if she is losing her mind along with
her heart. What if her crazy mother is right? If she continues consorting with her
Dreamweaver will there be lasting consequences to her soul?
Will their love survive? Or is it just a dream…
What are your main characters’ names, ages, and occupations?
    “Lucky” Leroy Morgan
    (30) was a professional mountaineer before he was killed. Gemma Star (25) is a bookstore
owner of Chinook Books in Fairbanks, Alaska.
    If you could give the
younger version of yourself advice what would it be?
Don’t lose yourself. I was a young bride of 19 and worked hard
putting my husband through college, had four children all before I was 28, and in
the meantime I lost who I was. My identity was either someone’s mother or wife.
It wasn’t until my youngest child went to school that I began living for myself
again. So many women put off their lives, sacrificing themselves for their family.
I’m not talking about being selfish, and there is sacrifice when you have young
children, but stay true to yourself. You’ll be a better wife and mother because
of it. And a hell of a lot healthier.
Do you have a muse? Describe
    this person, please.
Yes, and she’s always off somewhere in the South Pacific. She’s
temperamental, loves to sun worship and have frosty drinks delivered by hot Cabana
    boys.
    What does “balance”
mean to you as a writer?
Something I should do more of.
    Do things your family
or friends do ever end up in a book?
Yep. The best revenge is putting someone in your novel…and then
    killing them.
    What are some jobs you’ve
done before (or while) you were a writer?
    Moosed Up
I am a potter and sell pottery at my local coffee shop that is
set up as an Art Gallery (very cool). My pottery is also featured
in Park City. On top of that, I commercial fish on
the Bering Sea of Alaska in the summers, and the rest of the year moonlight at Barnes
& Noble. I’m just a tad busy. See, why I “should” really look into balancing
    my life.
    Which of your books would
you recommend to someone who doesn’t normally read your genre, and why?
Moosed Up. It’s funny. The sex is hot, but there is a lot of
humor, and action, and intrigue. I’ve even had men contact me telling me how much
    they enjoyed it.
    Imagine you get to go
on a dream vacation, but you have only one hour to pack and leave, and it starts
as soon as you finish this interview. What will you take with you and where will
    you go?
A bikini, sarong, flip flops, and my ereader. Somewhere tropical.
    I love Kauai.
    What is your favorite
    holiday and why?
Halloween! Candy apples, witches, roasted pumpkin seeds, crisp
air, and colorful fall leaves. It’s also perfect convertible weather!
What do you like to do
    when you’re bored?
I am never bored. Bored is a bad word in my house. If uttered,
it will get you a list of chores.

    Please Fill in the Blanks

I love pizza with artichokes, mushrooms, and olives.
I’m always ready for an adventure.
    When I’m alone, I write.
You’d never be able to tell, but I’m a brute.
    Tiffinie Helmer
If I had a halo it would be slightly
    bent.
If I could be a superhero I’d be Wonder Woman. Come
on, the woman has her own invisible plane and a pair of red, kickass boots.
I can never scuba dive because I’m claustrophobic.
