    Drakon’s Tear by NJ Walters

    Genre Paranormal Romance/Shapeshifter
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Dying isn’t an option. I’ve survived a kidnapping, and now I’m on the run from the Knights of the Dragon who want my gift. There’s nothing a dragon loves more than treasure. I’m Abigail Owens, and I can sense gemstones. When I find myself drawn to a beautiful stone bracelet at a tiny shop in Moscow, I can’t help but have it — even though I can sense it’s power. But I didn’t realize with this one decision I’ve just put myself in the middle of a war between the Knights and a Drakon.
I guess I’m just lucky like that.
The only person I trust even a little is Vasili Zima, which is weird since I’m not sure if he wants to kill me or protect me. I’m drawn to him in a way I hadn’t thought possible, and he feels the same way, or he wouldn’t be risking his life to help me. He’s wanted by the bad guys just as much as I am, and staying with me, well, there’s a hundred percent chance I’m about to get us both killed. But I will not be going down without a fight.

(Author’s Note: This book is NOT first person point of view.)

    QUICK

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
I write romance, but have explored many different sub-genres—erotic, ménage a trois, contemporary, sci-fi, and paranormal. The past half dozen years or more it’s been mostly paranormal romance. I can’t seem to get enough shifters, especially werewolves and drakons.
How do you come up with ideas?…
Book ideas come from everywhere—TV shows, magazine articles, snippets of overheard conversation, an online quiz, non-fiction books, songs. There is no end to possibilities. It’s all in the combination of the ideas. That’s what makes it so much fun. Sometimes an idea will seemingly pop into my head out of nowhere while I’m out walking or doing housework.
I’ve carried some ideas around with me for years. That’s what happened with the Blood of the Drakon series. I always knew I wanted to write about drakons (the offspring between pure-blooded dragons and human women), but the characters didn’t really start talking to me until a few years ago.
While I was waiting for the drakons, I had plenty of alpha werewolves demanding stories of their own.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
Everything starts with the characters. I may have an idea, but until I know the hero and heroine I don’t even think about writing. I write mini bios on index cards. I’ll often learn a lot more about them as I go, but that’s where I start.
Once I understand who the characters are, their story naturally arises from that. I’ll often have a couple of ideas for scenes or conflicts before I begin, but I’m more a pantser than a plotter.
As soon as I know what the first scene is going to be I start writing.
When did you write your first book?…
I wrote my first book back in the mid 1990s. I’d always been a voracious reader, but it never occurred to me that I might write until I was unemployed for a short while. I decided to give it a try and wrote 2 books. I submitted them to a couple of publishers, but they were rejected. I put the books away and didn’t start writing again until 2003. I wrote a short novel and submitted it to one of the early e-publishers and had it accepted. Annabelle Lee was released in October of 2004 (it’s since been rereleased as Uncovering Annabelle).
And the two books I wrote back in the 1990s…they were rewritten and Discovering Dani and The Way Home became the first two books of my Jamesville series.

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
I write mysteries and romantic suspense. My current project is a 3 book cozy mystery series set in Virginia Beach. Before I retired I had a personal/business coaching practice and was a management professor. Wearing that hat, I wrote self-help and personal growth books. Now, I take many of the lessons I shared as a coach and embed them in my stories.
How do you come up with ideas?…
I keep my eyes and ears open to everything around me. I live at the beach where people are very relaxed. Everywhere I go, ideas for stories present themselves so I can pick and choose which to use. My last three books – Gotcha!, Complicity, and Mercy have centered on social issues that make me angry. My goal was to shine the spotlight on important issues in hopes that people with way more power than I have will work to resolve the issue.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
Crafting a good plot that makes sense to readers, has a happy ending, and showcases the issue I want to put in the spotlight is important. Writing is like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle. I have so many ideas which I work hard to integrate smoothly into a cohesive story that my readers will love.
When did you write your first book?…
My first books were change management and personal development books that I wrote while I was a college professor. In 1998 I wrote a personal development book called Me, Inc. It helped people navigate their life path and chart a course for where they wanted to be. Then I retired and I switched to mystery and romantic suspense – and am loving it!

Life is to be lived – and lived fully! At least that’s my never to be humble opinion.
I am enthusiastic about life. Every day I get out of bed, put my feet on the floor and say Thank you, God for giving me another day to play! I recently retired from a successful career as a professor, personal coach, business writer, and motivational speaker. Then I looked around and asked myself, “What’s next?”
Next turned out to be a new adventure. Meet Jane the mystery/romance author!
“Stories have the power to reach people and inspire them. Stories help all of us see our lives up close, in 3D. We connect with characters we want to know, want to root for, want to embrace. Stories give us ways to change what we are doing and who we are being”
I hope that my stories will touch your heart. They are stories are about people in transition, facing life’s challenges, people just like you and me. The magic of stories is that they offer you hints about how to accept whatever life throws at you and find the strength and courage to overcome, to live life fully with no regrets.
My other passion is mah jongg. Yes, I am a mahjonggaholic! I teach people how to play mah jongg and how to be more strategic during the game. And, I play in tournaments whenever I can. Look close and you’ll find references to mah jongg in many of my stories.

    QUICK

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
I write both fantasy and paranormal romances.
How do you come up with ideas?…
The ideas for my stories usually come while I’m in the car. I create a playlist for each book and listen to it as I drive. The music inspires the scenes which I then write when I get home.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
Plotting. I don’t write the story until it is outlined from beginning to end. Plotting allows me to make the story arc more intricate and weave in some foreshadowing which keeps the book interesting.
When did you write your first book?…
I wrote my first novel when I was 37 years old. A story popped into my head while I was driving to work and refused to leave until I finally wrote it down. That story led to another and my writing career was born.

    FUN

Black or red? Black. I always have some black on, even if it is just my wedding band which has white and black diamonds.
Satin sheets or smooth cotton? Cotton. Satin feels great on bare skin, but I get too warm sleeping on it.
Ocean or mountains? Mountains. I was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains and now live on the ocean. I long to live in the mountains again.
City life or country life? Country life
Party life or evening at home? Evening at home. I love spending time with my family.
Dogs or cats? Both. I love animals. In addition to dogs and cats, I’ve owned turtles, rats, and even a pet groundhog.

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Former elite Federation soldier, now turned space pirate, Jackson Burke has done his best to turn his life around—for the better. He isn’t prepared when fate leaves a woman’s safety totally in his hands. Since heroes don’t leave a damsel in distress—and despite being outlaw pirates, the crew considers themselves the good guys—Jackson assumes responsibility for the beauty. It’s enough that his ship is held together by rust and sheer will, now he’s got to keep this good guy thing straight and not give into the urges the sassy female brings out in him. Raisa is everything a man could want and for some reason she seems to like him, rough edges and all, but he’s on the Federation’s wanted list and they aren’t known to back down.

    QUICK

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
Yes. Over the course of my career I’ve published in almost every romance genre: Science Fiction, Futuristic, Paranormal, Shifter, Vampire, Ghost, Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Parallel Universe/Alternate Reality, Historical, and ChickLit. I also just released my third Cozy Paranormal Mystery.
How do you come up with ideas?…
Getting out and living life is one of the best ways to be inspired with ideas. They’re always floating around me waiting to be plucked. Some of the best ideas happen when you’re not looking for them. And, the experience of doing can inform the writing and make it stronger.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
With the actual craft? World building. It’s fun to take my research, experiences, and imagination and create something new out of it. If I know the world, then I can know who might live in that world, and what might happen to them. It’s the foundation for everything.
When did you write your first book?…
My first book was published in 2004, so over 15 years now. When I started I honestly thought I would only write historical romances. My first book published was a Regency ghost story romance (The Mists of Midnight, now re-titled Forget Me Not).
It was after that book released that the editors contacted me because they wanted authors to fill out their Sci Fi Romance list. I agreed but was convinced I was not a sci fi writer. I was a historical writer. I laugh at younger me now. I still love historicals and I use history to infuse my worlds, but I am most definitely a sci fi writer (among other genres). That first sci fi series, Dragon Lords, is part of one of my most popular series collections, the Qurilixen World. Space Lords: His Earth Maiden, my newest futuristic space pirate book, is part of that world.
