Uniform Desires
Uniform Desires is a boxed set of novellas from some of the best
military writers on the planet: Delilah Devlin, Melissa Schroeder, Cat Johnson,
JM Madden, Elle James and myself. Most of us have either served in the military,
or have had husbands and children who have served, or who are serving now.
The release of this anthology is timed for Veteran’s Day, 11-11-13.
It is the only all-military boxed set available this year.
Our stories run the gamut, from Marines to para-rescue teams,
wounded vets and Navy SEALs. These are the quiet guys who get things done, putting
themselves in harm’s way, sacrificing their own safety for ours. It’s the least
we could do to help bring their stories to life.
We aren’t writing detailed accounts of war. There are great writers
out there who specialize in bringing readers that genre. We write about the love
stories, about what happens when the soldier comes home, when his special training
doesn’t prepare him for the “dangers” of falling in love.
I think that’s what I love most about writing military romance.
Certainly no national secrets are divulged in my books, but I’ve enjoyed the SEAL
community I’ve gotten to know, and like to write about what happens to them on a
personal side. I’ve said many times when I’ve spoken to groups, that the stories
I’ve heard are even more outrageous than what I put in my books. No one would believe
some of the things I’ve been told. Indeed, truth can be stranger than fiction.
When I’m at book signings or book fairs, people sometimes shy
away from picking up a military romance because they don’t like to think about men
and women coming into harm’s way, and perhaps for many, it is too close to home.
In romance, or romantic suspense, although not everyone survives the stories, usually
the hero and heroine do. Forced to deal with life and death, they are thrown together,
and almost don’t survive. In the midst of a crisis, love finds a way, and turns
out in the end to save the day.
Unlike some of the other boxed sets being sold today, most of
the material in the anthology is brand new. And, although there are many kinds of
heroes out there who sacrifice themselves for the public every day, the heroes in
our book are only military heroes.
Instead of attaching a blurb, I’m going to run down brief blurbs
of each of the stories, and the authors who wrote them:

Fallen SEAL Legacy

In a departure from our usual format today, author Sharon
Hamilton is interviewing her character Nebraska
born and bred Navy SEAL Calvin “Coop” Cooper. After his own family has perished
in a tornado, Cooper is ordered to meet the family of a prominent San Diego psychiatrist. The
doctor’s brother is a fallen SEAL medic who died in Grenada. There, Cooper meets Libby Brownlee,
the beautiful niece of this fallen hero. Heavily influenced by her father, “We don’t
speak military here,” is her comment about the military in general, and the SEAL
community in particular.

What starts out as a frosty debate between two people privately
dealing with their own personal grief, turns into a passionate affair neither expected.
Just as Cooper realizes perhaps Libby is the woman he’s always been looking for,
she is snatched out from under him by a psychopathic killer bent on revenge.
Dr. Brownlee is forced to rely on Cooper’s help, along with his
buddies in SEAL Team 3. Will Cooper be able to survive the loss of the woman he
loves, or will his self sacrifice be enough to keep her safe?

Today I am pleased to do a character interview with Special
Operator (SO) Calvin Cooper, from SEAL Team 3, based in San Diego, California. I’ve been given a little cheat sheet on him, and so I’m going
to ask him some questions he probably wasn’t expecting.
Sharon: Tell me a bit about yourself and your
Cooper: I was born
in Nebraska, near
Pender. My family was third generation farmers, having come over from Denmark in the early
1900’s. When I was little, my great grandfather used to read Hans Christian Andersen
stories to me at bedtime.
Sharon: Those sound like wonderful memories. What
did you like best about growing up on a farm?
Cooper: The way the
land looks after you’ve plowed it, the smell of the soil and the early morning sunlight.
Summers we worked sun up to sunset. Some day I hope to move back there, when the
time is right.
Sharon: I understand you experienced a tragedy
last year. Your whole family destroyed in a tornado. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Cooper: The farm,
my dad, mom, my sister and her husband and their little girl. And grandpa. Everyone.
All gone. My dog Bay survived. It was the lowest point in my entire life. I threw
myself back into my job. Wanted to go back to work in the worst way, but Chief Timmons
ordered me to meet the family of SO Brownlee, who had been killed in Grenada.
Sharon: That was significant, having you meet
the family of SO Brownlee. You carried his name engraved on your KAY-BAR, right?
Cooper: Yes, every
SEAL is awarded a KAY-BAR in a private ceremony before we get our Tridents. We carry
the name of a fallen SEAL. Chief Timmons wanted me to meet his family. Little did
he know I would find the girl of my dreams there.
Sharon: From what I’ve been told, they were none
too pleased to meet you.
Cooper: Kinda made
me mad at first. Not used to families who aren’t friendly toward our community.
Libby Brownlee was definitely the ice queen when I first met her. I think her father
had put notions in her head about what we are about.
Sharon: So tell me about your Team. What kind
of guys are you?
Cooper: We’re all
different. There’s Kyle, he’s our leader. Been on the teams for almost ten years,
always was a California
dude, if you know what I mean. Got himself a pretty little wife, Christy, who is
sort of our Team’s Realtor. Now has a baby. Kyle is an expert marksman, and a born
leader. He and Armando were swim buddies during BUD/S.
There’s Armando, but we call him Armani because he likes to dress
up. Native of Puerto Rico, he’s usually the one
all the ladies want. Very protective of his mother and his little sister, Mia. Armando
is an explosives expert. He’s also the best swimmer on the team, although I’m right
behind him.
Fredo is Mexican by heritage, grew up in LA. He’s our equipment
and radioman. He can rig a microphone anywhere and be able to track it remotely.
Also deadly with explosives. Don’t try to wrestle him, because he cheats. He’s in
love with Armani’s sister, but she won’t give him the time of day. He has a heart
the size of the ocean.
We got a new guy on the Team, LT Malcolm Jones, originally from
Texas. He actually
got an NFL contract but decided to go to the Academy instead. Never saw a guy run
so darned fast before. He can high jump over cars without breaking a sweat.
Sharon: But you haven’t told us what your expert
capabilities are.
Cooper: I’m the gadget
guy. I think I became a SEAL for the equipment and the toys. That’s what I used
to spend all my time and money on when I first joined up. I live in a motor home
at the beach, so I could save up to have every gadget known to man. Just bought
a great drone in Silicon Valley, which came in
mighty handy recently.
Sharon: I understand you are getting married shortly.
Cooper: Yes, Ma’am,
that’s affirmative. Libby made me the luckiest man on the planet when she agreed
to marry me.
Sharon: Other than the cool equipment, what do
you like about being a SEAL?
SEAL Endeavor
Cooper: I guess like
Kyle, I wanted to just see how far I could get. You never really know what you can
do until you test your limits. I just wanted to see, first of all, if I had what
it takes to become a SEAL. I didn’t get all macho about it. Bragging around the
place. Those are the fakers. Easy to spot. Tell everyone. That’s not the SEAL way.
Like Kyle, I feel lucky to have found something I love doing
at such an early age. I guess I would have remained on the farm in Nebraska if I’d washed out.
Never knew anything else. Never wanted to make millions of dollars, and sure as
heck they don’t pay you that when you’re on the Teams. But that’s not why we do
it. We love being the heroes that save the day. Get all the great girls. We get
to jump out of airplanes and helicopters at midnight. Sneak in and get out before
anyone knows we’ve been there. You need guys like us. I like that our country depends
on us to get our job done without drama. Leave the drama in the theater where it
belongs. We just get ‘er done.
Sharon: What advice would you give readers to
learn more about you and your Team buds?
Cooper: There’s tons
of stuff written about us, not all of it very accurate, of course. But we think
it’s funny how everyone wants to make us out to be superheroes. Hell, we even get
Superman and Spiderman underwear for special missions. We’re just plain guys doing
a job no one else can do. That’s a pretty cool thing when you think about it.
We’re trained to handle anything. Improvise. Learn from the enemy.
Observe mostly, talk little and never show off. So, let us be. Tell us thanks. That’s
the best thing anyone can do for us. Appreciate us. Because we love all of you.
Sharon: Well, Coop, I don’t think I could have
said it better myself. Keep yourself safe, and I hope we’ll get to hear more about
you and your buddies in the months and years to come.
Cooper: You bet. We’ll
be here. We’re always here, and we’re always ready.
What question would you ask SO Calvin Cooper if you had the chance?
What would you like to see the SEALs do in an upcoming story? Anything you’ve wanted
to know? Maybe I can get Coop to answer back.

Christy Nelson embarks on her new career in Real Estate by holding
her first open house. Entering the wrong house, by accident, she finds the nude
sleeping body of a young man.
Navy SEAL Kyle Lansdowne, on a mission to find his AWOL Team
buddy, is staying at his buddy’s home while investigating the disappearance. When
someone breaks in, he takes protective measures. He doesn’t expect to find that
a beautiful young woman is responsible for his teammate’s abduction.
What starts out as a meeting by accident becomes a hot affair
neither one is ready for. Kyle is conflicted about getting Christy involved in his
mission, but his hand is forced when he learns the same San Diego gang responsible for his teammate’s
abduction has kidnapped her.
Battling a cadre of dirty law enforcements hell-bent on getting
military equipment, especially state-of-the-art firepower, Kyle is forced to admit
that he would be willing to die to protect her.

Interview with Kyle Lansdowne of Accidental

Tell us about yourself. What are you like?
I’m a
simple guy. After the death of my mother, my father and I didn’t get along and the
Navy raised me, became my true family.
What do you think is your strongest point?
I’m not
special, I just don’t give up. Can’t stand to see innocents being abused. I like
being just one of the team, even though I lead them. I became a SEAL because I didn’t
have anything else at the time. Now it is different.
Do you have a weakness? (If so, what do you
think it is? What does your lover think it is? What does your enemy think it is?)
I guess
I have a soft spot for the one woman in my life. Christy rocks my world. She is
ten times smarter than I am. I knew from the first time I held her she was special,
was the only one I could love. I would do anything to protect her. I thought she
deserved better than me at first.
What drives you to do the things you do? What
makes you want to be the “good guy?”
Just like
in BUD/S, I don’t ring the bell. While some Team guys think they are God’s gift
to women, I have that singleness of focus that allows me to do the job I’m asked
to do. I love my community with the Teams and our families. I feel so lucky I found
this job at such an early age.
What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?
I love
freefalling, doing HALO jumps at midnight. I love my gear, all the fantastic equipment
I get to use. It turns me on going to Open Houses because of the way Christy and
I met.
If you didn’t know how old you were how old

I’d like
to own a gym like Gunny’s when I’m too old to do team work. Rather than own a store,
I’d rather have a place where Team guys could come and hang out, like a SEAL bar.
I’d like to stay in the community I’m in, even when I’ve got kids old enough to

Brothers in Arms

Today I have a special treat: two interviews by the heroes of Brothers in Arms by Kendall McKenna. I’m turning the blog over to her. Take it away, Kendall!

– – –

I’ve written a story called Brothers In Arms. It’s not your
typical m/m erotic romance, in that it’s pretty heavy on plot, action and
mystery. There’s a romance, to be sure. And the times the guys do get together,
it’s scorching! The two main characters are Jonah Carver and Kellan Reynolds.
Jonah is an active duty Recon Marine. Kellan used to be Jonah’s platoon
commander in the beginning of the war in Iraq. They’re a couple of smart,
competent bad-asses.
As if serving in combat together wasn’t enough, these two
found themselves at the center of an international mystery that they had to
resolve, while staying alive, and rekindling their romance. When the bad guys
made the mistake of snatching Kellan, you can imagine Jonah’s reaction.
First, I’d like to introduce you to each of the guys in
turn, and then let them answer some questions in their own voices. I think
you’ll find Kellan a little more forthcoming than Jonah, but that’s just how
Jonah is.

Kellan Reynolds: CEO, author, retired Recon Marine Corps

What is Kellan like?
Kellan is an intellectual man of action. He’s thoughtful and
methodical, but when the situation calls for action, he doesn’t hesitate. He’s
ambitious, and focused, not afraid to actively pursue what he wants. Kellan
belongs in a bygone era. He believes in, and actually lives by, words such as
duty, honor, and integrity. Kellan is charismatic, very much a natural leader. He’s
got a sense of humor he keeps under wraps, except with those closest to him,
namely Jonah.
What would Kellan say is his strongest point?
His intellect. Kellan believes his ability to think through
issues is his biggest strength. He’d even go so far as to say he’s able to
think his way through the opposing side of an issue.
Does Kellan think he has a weakness?
Yes. He believes his weakness is his tendency to worry about
his public image. But, if you catch him in a weak moment, he’ll jokingly tell
you that his only weakness is Jonah.
What does Jonah think Kellan’s weakness is?
Jonah thinks Kellan is damn hear perfect. If pressed, he’ll
tell you that if Kellan has a weakness, it’s that he’s too careful, that he
doesn’t push back as soon as he should, when someone pushes him.
What drives Kellan to do the things he does? What
makes him want to be the “good guy?”
The thing to understand about Kellan is that, he is the
“good guy”. He truly believes it’s his duty to do the right thing. It would
never occur to him to do anything else, or anything less.
What’s your main character’s favorite guilty pleasure?
Sex with Jonah.

Now, I’d like to ask Kellan some questions, directly. Let’s
get his take on a few things.

A biography has been written about you. What do you
think the title would be in six words or less?
I’ve already written it. It’s called ‘Brotherhood of
If money were not an object, where would you most like
to live?
Wherever Jonah would want to live. I know he likes Southern
California for the surfing, but Hawaii
is even better for the kinds of outdoor sports he enjoys.
If you were a tool, what would people use you to do?
I’d be a measuring tape. People would use me to ensure
everything fits the way it’s supposed to.
As a child, what was your favorite thing about school?
English class. English Lit. English Composition. Anything to
do with reading and language.
If you came with a warning label, what would it say?
I don’t need a warning label. I’m pretty user friendly.
I love pizza with everything but anchovies.
I’m always ready for the unexpected.
When I’m alone, I text Jonah.
You’d never be able to tell, but sometimes I miss being a
If I had a halo it would be stuffed
in a drawer under my socks.
If I could fly I’d take Jonah someplace he’s
always wanted to go.

Next, I’d like to introduce you to Gunnery Sergeant Jonah
Carver: Recon Marine.

What is Jonah like?
Jonah is a prickly son-of-a-bitch. He’s extremely smart and
extraordinarily competent. He does not suffer fools gladly. He’s got a biting
wit. He’s so good at being a Marine, he inspires awe in many, and intimidates
others. And he could give a damn. He’s not overly social, but when engaged, is
quite humorous.
What would Jonah say is his strongest point?
Jonah believes his strongest point is that he is the best
damn Marine he can possibly be.
Does Jonah think he has a weakness?
Not that he would admit to out loud. If you catch him in a
weak moment, he might admit that Kellan is his only weakness.
What does Kellan think Jonah’s weakness is?
His dislike of other people. Kellan sometimes wishes Jonah
wouldn’t be quite so stand-offish, and would cut others some slack.
What drives Jonah to do the things he does? What makes
him want to be the “good guy?”
Jonah is a Marine. Semper Fidelis. As far as Jonah is
concerned, there is no other way for him to be.
What’s your main character’s favorite guilty pleasure?
80’s music. Tech gadgets. Kellan.

Now it’s time to ask Jonah a few questions, and get his
unique take on things.

A biography has been written about you. What do you
think the title would be in six words or less?
He Hated Incompetent People
If money were not an object, where would you most like
to live?
New Zealand.
Anywhere the sun and the surfing is good. Kellan can’t be out of D.C. for very
long or he starts to get twitchy, so, I’d probably have to settle for Miami. Just so we could
be on the east coast.
If you were a tool, what would people use you to do?
I am not a tool. I am a weapon. The right weapon for the
As a child, what was your favorite thing about school?
The first day of summer vacation.
If you came with a warning label, what would it say?
Stupid people will be shot on sight.

I love pizza with beer.
I’m always ready for sex.
When I’m alone, I text Kellan.
You’d never be able to tell, but if you can’t tell, why
would I tell you? I lose the advantage that way.

my niece made for me from construction paper and glitter. Doesn’t mean I’d wear

About the Author

Kendall McKenna’s first work of fiction was written at the
worldly age of nine, and was a transformative work that expanded on the story
told in a popular song of the time. She tried her hand at vampire and cowboy
fiction, winning high school poetry and short story contests along the way. It
wasn’t until she discovered the world of m/m erotic fiction and found her
stride with cops, Marines and muscle cars, that she felt inspired to share her
stories with readers who enjoy the same things. Kendall was born and raised in Southern California, where she still lives and works. A
non-conventional relationship has kept her happy for the last decade. Her four
dogs enjoy it when she writes, as she sits still long enough for them to curl
up around her.

A World Apart

Camelia Miron Skiba’s hero, Major David Hunt in A World Apart, is the interviewee today. Let’s meet this fascinating character!

Tell us about the main character in your current book. What is he like?
Major David Hunt is a trauma surgeon for the US Air Force deployed to the Black Sea during the Iraq Invasion. His traits—service to God and country, sacrifice, professionalism, honor, courage, heroism, and compassion—epitomize our image of the American soldier. Yet, David is not infallible; he’s stubborn, uncommunicative, and by-the-book to a fault.
If your main character was here today, what would he say is his strongest point?
Patriotism. Impeccable career as a fourth generation soldier and using his talent as a distinguished trauma surgeon to serve his country.
Does he think he has a weakness? (If so, what does he think it is? What does his lover think it is? What does his enemy think it is?)
He’s weakness is clouded judgment caused by … Romanian Lt. Cassandra Toma trauma surgeon in the Romanian National Army. She’s deployed at the same military base as David. He’s unable to resist her even when she breaks military procedures and is more stubborn than “the mother of all mules.” Cassandra hates judgmental, arrogant, and rigid people, qualities she believes David embodies. He has no enemies.
What drives your hero to do the things he does? What makes him want to be the “good guy?”
David is driven by his sense of honor and his duty as a soldier and as a doctor. His priorities are saving lives and keeping Cassandra safe at all costs. In doing so he becomes a controlling nut, butting heads with her, which drives them apart.
What’s your main character’s favorite guilty pleasure?
Music—the thing that frees him from his leadership responsibilities if only for a short time. That and his love of Cassandra, which drives him to take actions that he never could have foreseen in himself.
Answered as Major David Hunt
If you didn’t know how old you were how old would you be?
I feel as if I lived many lives. War takes you to a different dimension, where life measures in fleeting moments, priceless in saving one’s life. In the time that stretches between incoming casualties I feel old. When the Blackhawks are on approach and the adrenalin is kicking, I feel 18.
If money were not an object, where would you most like to live?
As an active officer I’ll live wherever my country needs me.
What song would best describe your life?
Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.”
If you were a tool, what would people use you to do?
A scalpel–precise, wielded with skill, it’s confident and serves a specific purpose.
Tell us an embarrassing story that has to do with a pet. If you have no pets, a story about a significant other will do. ^_^
English is Cassandra’s second language. She’s actually cute saying something when she actually means something else. Once she told me to write her off instead of write her up. She calls jerky beef instead of beef jerky.
If you came with a warning label, what would it say?
Just do it! Take no shit. Handle with care. Fragile. Hot to the touch. Keep out of reach of children. For adult use only. Store in a dry place. Harmful if swallowed. Refrigerate after opening. Can’t touch this. Hammer time. Do what I say, not what I do. I’m too sexy for this shirt. If you don’t know where you are, you don’t belong here. Carpe Diem!

About the Book

In a war that’s not hers, she loses everything.
Everything she loses is because of him.
Forgiveness is not an option.
Or maybe…
Lieutenant Cassandra Toma, trauma surgeon in the Romanian National Army starts her deployment at a joint-unit air base on a wrong foot, clashing on her first day with her new commander, Major David Hunt. Her rebellious nature and sassiness rival her excellent performance in the operating room—the only reason why she’s not reprimanded, or maybe not the only reason.
They meet. They clash. A forbidden passion consumes them with the intensity of an erupting volcano, leaving her heartbroken and him with tarnished honor and pride as an officer. The only way out for David is disappearing into the dangerous warzone in Iraq. Their flame was supposed to be over when destiny brings them back under the same roof, this time with a common goal—to find Cassandra’s brother, Maj. Robert Toma, kidnapped by insurgents while on patrol.
To rescue Robert, Cassandra and David put aside their resentments, uniting forces against a common enemy. Trying to forget the painful past, Cassandra opens up to give David—and their love—another chance. What she doesn’t realize is that her anguish is the result of David’s impetuous action—one reckless choice he made for which she may never forgive him.
His mistake, his secret, could cost them both the love they’ve finally found.
