Chains of Rome by Patricia Bates

Genre Historical Romance set in Ancient Rome

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Born a slave, Salaria has served her mistress, Roman noblewoman Icilia, from childhood. Skilled with medicines and potions, she’s served as both her body slave and healer. From her position at Icilia’s side Salaria’s bore witness to countless indiscretions.

To protect herself and the slave children of the villa, Salaria has kept her mistress’s secrets safe. When she unwittingly humiliates Icilia, Salaria is punished severely and thrown out of the house and into the slave quarters attached to the barn.

Her fate – to serve the men training to be gladiators.

Recently taken from the battlefield, war chieftain Tritus has no love of Rome. His hatred deepens when he sees how Salaria, a spirited yet compassionate woman, is treated. To protect her, Tritus begins to train her as a gladiator.

But the longer they’re together, the more they yearn for each other. In Tritus, Salaria finds a man of honor, of integrity who sees her as an equal. A man who doesn’t fear her or want to crush her beneath his heel. Love, however, is a luxury no slave can afford.

Pushed together for survival, they find themselves drawn to each other. But their futures are uncertain and one slip could mean they’re torn from each other’s arms forever.

My laptop goes along, of course, and a rolling briefcase!

What’s your best advice for a new writer?

Write as much as you can. If all that comes to mind is crap, write it, and sort it out later. NEVER throw away anything you write. Keep a file of deleted material to revisit and repurpose.

Never Retreat, a sweet romance, by Bonnie McCune features a feisty single mom who clashes with an ex-military, macho corporate star at a business retreat in the wild Colorado mountains, where only one can win a huge prize. But when a massive flood imperils

their love and survival, they learn the meaning of true partnership.

Bonnie, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Never Retreat.

    Never Retreat by Bonnie McCune

    Genre sweet romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

Years ago, Ramona (‘Raye”) Soto faced harsh reality when a roving con man knocked her up. Now at thirty-something she’s concentrating on her career in a major telecommunications firm and funding college for her teenaged son. Enter Desmond Emmett—a fast talker and smooth operator. New to the office, the ex-serviceman possesses every negative quality for a guy Raye should avoid.

Thrown together at a corporate retreat in the wilderness, the reluctant duo struggles to complete management’s extreme mental and physical tests for a huge reward. But only one can win the prize, and Des needs the money to underwrite medical treatments for his adored younger sister.

See-sawing between attraction and antagonism, the mismatched couple, Raye and Des, face their biggest challenge: learning the meaning of true partnership. When a massive flash flood sweeps down the rocky canyon and threatens their love and survival, they must put aside their difference to rescue their colleagues—and their future as a couple.

Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.

In a foretelling of my lifelong passion, when I was four, I got a child’s record player and some stories on records that were bright red! The stories were about kings, queens, and magic. I adored it and played records over and over.

When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?

I’m the type of reader who reads cereal boxes if nothing else is handy. I especially like novels featuring regular people, and this shows in the theme of my blog: ordinary people, extraordinary lives. I believe all lives have stories salted throughout them. I tend toward women’s fiction, science fiction (if not too science-y), accessible literary fiction that tells about people, particularly women, meeting challenges and learning from life. Some favorites: The Handmaid’s Tale; Pride & Prejudice; A Tale of Two Cities; The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan; The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien; The Golden Notebook, Doris Lessing; Caramelo, Sandra Cisneros; The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie; anything by Carl Hiaasen; anything by Alexander McCall Smith in The Number One Ladies Detective Agency series; I Capture the Castle, Dodie Smith; Main Street, Sinclair Lewis; several by Roddy Doyle, including The Woman Who Walked into Doors; Let the Great World Spin, Colum McCann; A Gentleman from Moscow.

What kinds of things do you read when you’re researching a new book?

In today’s world, so much info is electronic, research is printed and online. For Never Retreat, my most recent, I spent hours in History Colorado’s library, listening to taped interviews from the survivors of one our great flash floods. I also watched YouTube videos and photos of flash floods. Since the heroine is part Latina, I found myself researching that cultural group, especially with roots in Colorado, although a roommate in college was a feisty Chicana, so that helped. The hero is ex-military, as is my husband, so I dug through many resources on service in the Middle East. Hot, hot, hot! And dangerous. My own employment history contains one and a half years in a law office, so that fit right in, as did my experience with two teens.

How long have you been writing?

I decided when I was ten and sent a poem to the Saturday Evening Post, where it was immediately rejected. I never looked back. Although I got discouraged over the decades and thousands of rejections.

    Are you a writing mom/dad?

Yes, and grandma. I’m trying to write a young adult thriller with my grandson set at a boarding school with an ominous new headmaster. I learned very early to squeeze writing in whenever I could, not waiting for “inspiration” but utilizing perspiration. Writing has to be a high priority in your life. (but obviously, not as high as the kids) Everyday life provides many of my ideas, along with my not-so-secret fears, such as flash floods. For example, in Never Retreat, I used a corporate mountain lodge I’d visited, very posh yet rugged, as the setting.

What is the single most important part of writing for you?…

Writing lets me explore ideas, thoughts, people, relationships, politics, social situations, loves, hates, in short, all of life, in private safety.

His feelings for his best friend are changing, but he doesn’t believe in ghosts, reincarnation, or lasting romantic relationships. How can he handle the idea that he lived a previous life?

Meet NJ Walters @njwaltersauthor Author of Burning Ash #RLFblog #PNRMeet NJ Walters, Bestselling Paranormal Author of the Forgotten Brotherhood series, Salvation Pack series, and Blood of the Drakon series.

NJ, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Burning Ash.

    Burning Ash by NJ Walters

    Genre PNR

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

No one is more surprised than Asher, one of the oldest vampires on Earth, that he’s attracted to vamp hunter Jo Radcliffe. She’s smart, a talented slayer, and she’s gorgeous. Something about her pulls at him, like no one ever has before. For a man whose name strikes fear in everyone––this is something new and intriguing. And quite possibly deadly, if she discovers his secret.

Jo has two things in common with the handsome Asher––they are both slayers and someone is messing with them in a very-much-trying-to-kill-them way. She’s not so happy about joining forces with a dude she doesn’t know. But he’s sexy as hell and really good at his job as one of the Forgotten Brotherhood, whose business it is to execute misbehaving paranormals.

She knows she’s bait in a larger plot to harm Asher and the Brotherhood. And there is nothing he won’t do, no line he won’t cross, to keep her safe––which may be the weakness that destroys them both.

Tell us about yourself as a person.

    What is your personality type?

I’m an introvert. I’m quite happy spending time at home writing, reading, and watching TV. I love to go to the movies by myself or take myself out for breakfast or to a coffee shop. While I enjoy doing things with family and friends, I have no trouble going to events or shopping on my own.

What was your favorite childhood game?

That’s a tough one. I had all the usual childhood loves like jump rope, Barbies, tag, and such, but I used to love pretending to be a teacher or librarian. I’d spend hours at that.

    What is your favorite meal?

I’m a very plain eater and can’t say I have a favorite meal, but I do have some favorite foods—bananas, bread, cheese, and chocolate.

Tell us about yourself as a writer.

What made you want to be a writer?

Like all writers, I started out as a reader. But other than poetry and a short story or two, I didn’t really think about writing until I was in my thirties. I was at a time in my life when I had some time and thought, “I could do that.” So, I did. I wrote two books that got rejected many times. I put them away and stopped writing for almost another decade before I started again. The book I wrote ended up being my first published book—Annabelle Lee (now available as Uncovering Annabelle) And the two books that were rejected? They were rewritten and were eventually published as Discovering Dani and The Way Home, the first two books of my contemporary romance Jamesville series.

What’s your best advice for a new writer?

Just write. It’s that simple. There’s no magic involved in writing, only hard work. It’s not an easy career, but it is a rewarding one. And don’t be afraid to grow and change. I began as a contemporary/contemporary erotic romance writer and ended up writing mostly paranormal romance. I’ve also written some sci-fi/fantasy books as well. Some writers find a niche and happily stay there. I find I need to switch it up now and again to keep the creativity flowing, which is why paranormal romance is so appealing. So many possibilities.

What are your writing goals for this year?

I admit that 2020 has been a rough year for me. For the first time since my career began in 2004, I didn’t want to write. My goal for the coming year is to block out the craziness of the world and get back to what I love doing best—telling stories.

    What is your personality type?

I’m an introvert with extrovert tendencies. I know, it probably doesn’t make sense. When I was a kid, I was painfully shy with people. I was quiet and didn’t talk much. After I began working at Waldenbooks, I was forced into a situation where I had to talk to people to sell them books. I discovered the art of conversation and it’s a skill I’m grateful to have learned. Now, I can talk to anyone about anything, but I still prefer to keep to myself. I love to socialize, but I also love to be alone.

What was your favorite childhood game?

I spent many nights with my family playing boardgames and card games. Some of my favorites were Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. Each of these games were difficult since I was no older than 11 years old, but I still loved them. They were challenging, and I love challenges. Also, Uno and Pokeno. My grandfather was fun to play any card game with as he always made me laugh myself silly.

What is your favorite subject to talk about?

I’m a mother of four children, so anything about kids is probably my easiest topic to talk about. Anyone with children can go on and on about their kids! But I love learning and sharing things I learned, so I have many interests such as books and literature, TV shows and movies, history, science, art, quantum physics, religion, and the supernatural. But not math. I don’t want to talk about math. Especially common core math. *shudders*

With Halloween right around the corner, my favorite topic at the moment is the supernatural! If you ever want to strike up a conversation with me, tell me your ghost stories! I love, love, love talking about the paranormal. Give me ghosts, cryptids, vampires, werewolves, witches and spells, aliens and UFO’s. Anything that has a mysterious supernatural element to it. I will talk about it all! I have my own interesting stories to share and I belong to a few paranormal groups with like-minded people. Too many strange and unexplainable things have happened during my life, so rest assured, I am a believer!

    What is your favorite book?

Nope. Can’t narrow it down to just one. Skip!

    What is your favorite meal?

Grilled salmon with rice and vegetables. Oh, it’s delicious! I could eat this every day. Don’t forget to follow that meal with dessert! A nice warm brownie covered with mocha ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry on top. Heaven!

What made you want to be a writer?

I must have been born reading. I don’t ever remember not having books in my home. Even the pictures I drew when I was a child all had stories to tell. I never wanted to be a writer, I just am. It’s a part of me. I always wrote for fun. In a creative writing class during my senior year in high school, my teacher urged me to consider publication. He believed I had talent. It was the first time in my life that I thought of writing as a possible career choice.

What are your favorite books for writing advice?

I’ve got a couple of these which you can find if you check out my Goodreads bookshelf labeled writing-reference.

How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author by Janet Evanovich

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers by Christopher Vogler

Complete Writer’s Guide to Heroes and Heroines: Sixteen Master Archetypes by Tami D. Cowden

GMC: Goal, Motivation and Conflict: The Building Blocks of Good Fiction by Debra Dixon

Any of Chris Fox’s Write Faster, Write Smarter series

    Any of Joanna Penn’s books

What’s your best advice for a new writer?

Read. Read. Read. There’s so much you can learn by simply reading the kinds of books that you want to write. Never stop reading. And don’t give up!

What are your writing goals for the next year or so?

I’ve recently joined a writer’s group on Facebook that has inspired me to push my writing abilities. In that group, I’ve joined several multi-author boxed sets. For 2021, I’m all about writing shifters and alien romances. Between my own series and the stories that I’m writing for the boxed sets, it’s going to be a busy, busy year! I’m looking forward to it!
