Victorian engineering prodigy Gillian Smith has found a home, a community and a vocation in Lisabet Sarai’s steam punk erotic romance The Journeyman’s Trial. Desire stimulates creativity in the Toymakers Guild. But what happens when two Guild members fall in love?

Lisabet, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We’re excited to find out more about your heroine, but first, tell us about The Journeyman’s Trial.

The Journeyman’s Trial by Lisabet Sarai

    Steampunk erotica/erotic romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): X-rated

Technically brilliant and thoroughly wanton, Gillian Smith has found her vocation: designing innovative erotic devices for the Toymakers Guild. Lust is a lubricant to creativity at Randerley Hall. But what happens when two Toymakers fall in love?

The Guild’s tribe of talented, uninhibited engineers has embraced Gillian as one of their own. Edward Thorne, the perverse genius who founded the Guild, undertakes to train her in the skills she’ll need as a journeyman, from practical mind-reading to transcendental orgasms.

As Gillian labours to impress the charismatic Master, her enigmatic fellow journeyman Rafe both entices and frustrates her. Their passion seems to go beyond mere appetite, but in Randerley’s promiscuous and permissive environment, does love make any sense?

When the Toymakers receive a commission to equip London’s most exclusive brothel with the latest sexual technology, Gillian has the chance to demonstrate her formidable abilities as well as to help Rafe exorcise the demons of his past. She doesn’t realize she’ll be forced to choose between Rafe and her future in the Guild.

Know the Heroine from The Journeyman’s Trial

Here are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

Gillian Smith doesn’t spend a huge amount of mental energy on her appearance. While working in the Randerley Hall laboratory, designing and building sex toys, she usually wears an ankle-length, heavy linen lab coat which has lots of pockets and which buttons up the front. When she’s sent to London to meet with potential clients, however, she’ll don more fashionable attire, the fitted bodices and multi-layered skirts and petticoats typical of the Victorian period, often in silk or velvet. She might even wear a hat and veil.

Does she know how to fix things?

Gillian is a highly skilled engineer, the only child of two famous inventors responsible for a range of steam punk technical devices including the piezoelectric pocket watch and the personal gramophone. They educated her at home, fostering her intellectual and technical skills. Thus, she can fix almost anything, whether it’s electrical or mechanical. Her specialty, however, is mathematics and logic.

She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

For much of The Journeyman’s Trial, Gillian is trying to create a system to automatically control mechanical devices based on stored instructions – basically, to invent the first programmable computer. She encounters many obstacles, and feels both frustrated and depressed. With a realistic appreciation of her own intelligence and skill, she is accustomed to success in technical matters. Her apparent failure to create an Analytical Engine that works according to her requirements undermines her self-confidence and actually reduces her to tears on one occasion – a most uncharacteristic reaction for her.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

Gillian’s definitely a morning person. She likes to be in the lab by 7:30 or 8:00 AM, especially when she has a deadline. When she wakes, she’s immediately alert, rather than groggy.

She also likes to eat a hearty breakfast, including at least one cup of strong tea without sugar.

How does she handle things when in a “proper” social situation?

The denizens of Randerley Hall – the members of the Toymakers Guild – are not sticklers for propriety. Indeed, one might say that they are rebels, defying the repressive morality of the Victorian era and seeking freedom from the prudish society that surrounds them. Gillian fits right in. She has little patience for social niceties and is often direct to the point of being blunt.

She does know how to behave, however, and can be polite and genteel under the right circumstance – for instance, when she is interacting with the suave, attractive Duke of Anselm.

    Powdered wig or natural hair?

Wigs had mostly fallen out of fashion in the Victorian era, aside from individuals who had unnatural hair loss. Gillian has lovely, curly auburn hair which is often somewhat unkempt. She wears it pulled back when she is working, and collected into a loose knot at the top of her head on more formal occasions.

    Carriage or horseback?

Rail travel is probably the most common mode of transportation used in The Journeyman’s Trial. Randerley Hall is in Devon, in the vicinity of Tavistock which was a major market town. Frequent trains connected the town to London, and the characters make use of them on a number of occasions.

The book does include several chapters in which Gillian ventures out onto the moors on horseback. She’s not an experienced horsewoman, especially at first, but her fellow journeyman Rafe encourages her and teaches her the rudiments of riding. This is fortunate, since at a later stage in the story, she’s forced to ride out alone to rescue him.

Thanks for helping us get to know your heroine!

Stressing the Hero from The Gazillionaire and the Virgin a scorching #HotRead #Romance by Lisabet Sarai @lisabetsarai #RLFblog

When Silicon Valley entrepreneur Rachel Zelinsky meets reclusive genius Theo Moore, she finds him strangely compelling. Theo is both arrogant and socially awkward, but he has an aura of power that speaks to Rachel’s carefully-hidden submissive side.

    The Gazillionaire and the Virgin

Genre MF Contemporary BDSM Erotic Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): X

Disturbed and aroused, she tries to focus on her original objective—a deal to incorporate his Artificial Intelligence software into her company’s popular virtual world. Rachel’s not a woman who lets pleasure interfere with business, but for some reason, she can’t resist Theo’s geeky appeal.

Theo Moore can’t be bought. His past battles with poverty make him deeply suspicious of the billionaire CEO. Still, with her voluptuous curves and brilliant mind, Rachel embodies his ultimate sexual fantasy. Too bad his knowledge about sex derives from extensive research and a stash of kinky porn rather than real-world experience.

That doesn’t bother Rachel, however. In his bed—in his arms—in his bonds—she discovers the bliss of total surrender. Rachel may be Theo’s first lover, but Theo is Rachel’s first true Master—and the first man to truly touch her heart. It seems that love may harmonize their differing goals and values, until Rachel’s unwitting violation of Theo’s trust threatens to tear them apart forever.

    Stressing The Hero

Every hero has a story. He has a background, a history, and a past. This interview allows us to meet a hero and get to know him better, by focusing on how he handles being relaxed, as well as how he handles stress.

    The Hero’s Relaxed Side

This hero is at a party. Considering his story, describe the party.

Theo actually does attend a party in the book, a fund-raising event for his technology charity Code in the Hood (CIH) that’s organized by the heroine, Rachel Zelinsky. The event takes place at the Computer History Museum, a real museum in Silicon Valley. There’s an open bar, a buffet, a band playing soft rock, and lots of technology executives with cash to burn milling around.

    He’s anything but relaxed, though!

How does the hero feel about being this particular party, and what body language is he displaying that gives it away?

He’d rather be almost anywhere else. He parks himself at a table in the corner and fidgets with the CIH brochures stacked up in the center, at least until Rachel drags him out to socialize with potential donors.

Is he more likely to mingle or remain aloof?

He’d much rather remain aloof, but Rachel won’t let him. However, once he gets started talking about the charity which is his personal passion, his nervousness disappears.

If he drinks, what is his drink of choice at this party?

At this party he has his first taste of champagne. And he likes it very much!

How much drink is his usual?

Theo hardly ever drinks. Once he tastes the champagne, though, he wants more.

The hero figures out where the hiding places are and then goes there. Is it to hide, to avoid someone, or to go drag a friend back to the party?

Theo would love to hide. Crowds and strangers make him terribly anxious.

Is he likely to latch onto a friend and stay with him/her and ignore others, or is he the friend that others latch onto?

He hangs on to Rachel for dear life. She’s the only person he knows at the party, and the only one who can keep him from panicking.

If someone picked a fight at this party, how is the hero going to handle it?

If you asked Theo this question in the abstract, he’d tell you that he’d run and hide. In fact, he’d probably try to break up the fight, then possibly freak out afterward.

Is the hero the one most likely to get tossed out of the party, or the one who does the tossing?

He’s not likely to get tossed out. He’s generally pretty mild-mannered. It’s pretty difficult to imagine him tossing anyone else out, though physically he could manage this.

Will he know when to leave, or stay late and make a nuisance of himself?

He’d rather not be there at all, so he’d probably leave as soon as he could slip away.

    The Hero’s Stressed Out Side

How does the hero handle it if the cops or some other authority figure pulls him aside when he was blameless in a situation?

He will try to reason with the cops. He might get sarcastic. If he’s not successful in convincing them to release him, he’ll probably sulk.

How does the hero react to hearing a scream?

His first reaction will be to try and discover who screamed, and why. If he believes someone is being hurt, he’ll temporarily forget his self-consciousness

If he sees someone being assaulted, what is the FIRST thing that crosses his mind?

He wonders what was going on, and why.

If he sees someone being assaulted, what is the FIRST thing he does?

In fact, he probably wades into the fray, trying to pull the assailant off the victim. Later, he won’t believe he’s done this.

This hero attempts to rescue someone and realizes that he is in over his head. The odds are against him and there is no way out. He is going to get his butt handed to him. What does he do?

When Theo can’t utilize his physical skills to implement the rescue, he’ll fall back on his intellectual abilities. He’ll try to figure out some way to trick his opponents, or to sneak away.

The hero runs into the one person from his past he wanted to avoid. He can’t get out of the situation and must interact with him/her in some way. What does he do?

He becomes very stiff and formal. He keep his words to a minimum, saying only what is absolutely necessary.

Someone younger than the hero is in charge of the situation, and they are handling it badly, perhaps bungling things. How does the hero deal with it?

He’s surprisingly bossy, giving instructions and perhaps getting a bit impatient if the person in charge doesn’t obey. He might resort to sarcasm or ridicule.

The hero is in physical pain but must bear up under it and keep going. What does he tell himself in order to get through the situation?

He thinks about the safety and comfort of his home, and how good it will feel to finally arrive there.

What mentor’s words come to mind in a bad situation?

“Don’t underestimate yourself. Expect to succeed.”

What lesson from his past gets him through a stressful situation?

He remembers how he saved Rachel from a cyber-assault. That reminds him how powerful he really is.

Read the spicy #Romance Sharing Leah by Lisabet Sarai @LisabetSarai #RLFblog #HotReadIn Lisabet Sarai’s provocative erotic romance Sharing Leah, the heroine Leah lives with both her husband Daniel and her master Greg. But her lovers’ jealousy and possessiveness threaten to shatter their fragile detente.

Lisabet, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Sharing Leah.

Sharing Leah: A Polyamorous Romance by Lisabet Sarai

    Genre Contemporary erotic romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): X-rated

How can she choose between her husband and her master?

Some women might think Leah’s existence heavenly – shared by two sexy men who both adore her. Ten years married to lusty, artistic Daniel, she still finds ecstatic release in surrendering to her master Greg.

But Daniel’s and Greg’s jealousy and possessiveness have made Leah’s life a hell. They bring out the worst in each other. And in some sense, it’s all her fault. If she loved only one of them, if she made a choice, that would be that. In theory, at least.

Unable to bear the continuous conflict, she escapes to the beautiful Maine coast to ponder her future. Gradually she realizes that she cannot live without either of her lovers. But if the two men can’t settle their differences, how can she bear to live with them?

What’s in your character’s pockets, backpack, or purse?

Read the spicy #Romance Sharing Leah by Lisabet Sarai @LisabetSarai #RLFblog #HotReadWhat does your character always carry?

Her mobile phone. Sometimes her work takes her away overnight, to conferences or meetings with clients, and she wants to be able to stay in touch with the two men who are her soul mates.

Is there an item your character carries for good luck and if so, what is it?

Actually, she has two items, one associated with each of her lovers. Folded up in her wallet, she keeps the first poem Daniel wrote to her, the morning after the party where they met more than ten years ago. Meanwhile, tied around her wrist like a bracelet, she wears a leather thong cut from the flogger Greg used, the first time he whipped her. She also wears two rings, her wedding ring on her left hand and a jade and gold ring gifted to her by Greg on her right.

What does your character carry related to a job or calling?

Leah’s a writer, so she carries her laptop with her almost everywhere. Her job involves writing and reviewing for a magazine, but like most people who write what other people tell them to, she’s also working on a novel.

What else besides pockets does the character use to carry things?

She has a shoulder bag she uses for overnight trips. This features in the story.

What is one thing your character wouldn’t be caught dead carrying?

A novel by James Patterson. She has a rather snobbish attitude toward popular fiction.

Has anything in your character’s pockets ever gotten them in trouble?

Oh, yes. Once at a business meeting she reached into her purse for her phone and pulled out a pair of silk bikinis instead. Daniel had come to visit her at lunch time. At his instigation, they’d enjoyed a quickie in the office rest room. Flustered and running late, she hadn’t noticed that her mischievous husband had stuffed her panties into her bag.

When the Berks Hills Summer Playhouse offered me my first real acting job, I never expected to share a stage with theater legend Geoffrey Hart – let alone his bed. Nothing in my education or experience prepared me for the paradoxical pleasures of submission.

Now I’m devoted to my master, for better or worse. According to the rumors, though, Geoff’s heart is taken. Dumped by his long-time sub, he has escaped to the Berkshires to lick his emotional wounds. Geoffrey’s dark games arouse me beyond belief, but I fear I’m just a substitute for the real object of his affections. Am I willing to settle for the role of understudy in this perverse passion play?

Know the Heroine from The Understudy: Acts of Submission

Here are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

It’s late, she’s bored. What does she do?

Sarah Gladstone is not the type to be bored. She’s an over-achiever, always working to perfect her acting craft. If it were late, but she couldn’t sleep, she probably would be reviewing her lines for the next day’s performance. That is, unless Geoffrey Hart were down the hall in his room. Then she’d be fantasizing about him, trying to resist knocking on his door when he hadn’t summoned her.

What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?

If she could get some trail mix – preferably organic – she’d be ecstatic. But she’s not picky about food. You can’t afford to be when you’re an actress.

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

Left to her own devices, she prefers to dress casually, in jeans and button-up shirts. However, Geoff has ordered her to wear only skirts or dresses – with no brassiere or underwear beneath.

Does she know how to fix things?

She’s an only child, and her parents spoiled her, so she hasn’t really had the opportunity to learn how to fix things. However, she’s intelligent and independent, so she probably could figure it out.

She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

Sarah’s hard on herself. For instance, at her first New York audition, the director changed the play he wanted her to read at the last minute. She’d spent hours studying up “The Importance of Being Ernest”, then got asked to read from “Salome”. Even without preparation, she didn’t do too badly, but she was a bit flustered and didn’t get the part. Instead of blaming the director, she blamed herself. Fortunately, she knows the acting business is tough, so she didn’t dwell on the situation, just resolved to do better next time.

How does she act around children she doesn’t know?

Sarah loves kids. She always wanted a brother or sister, and was jealous of her friends from large families.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

She’s a morning person, no question. Even when she’s spent half the night with her lover, she can be out of bed, showered and dressed in fifteen minutes. However, she definitely needs a decent breakfast, or she’ll get drowsy by mid-morning.

    Can she use chopsticks?

She’s from New York. She was practically born using chopsticks!

Does she drink coffee? If so, how does she take it? If not, what does she drink instead?

Sarah drinks coffee in moderation, mostly in the morning She takes it black with a bit of sugar.

What apps would she have on her phone?

Her most often used apps include her ebook reading app, dictionary apps, and a Scrabble game. She also has a sketchpad/drawing app that she uses to relax.

    Android or iPhone?

Android. Actually, her parents tried to buy her an iPhone, but she refused.

    Earrings or unpierced ears?

Sarah has pierced ears, but doesn’t always wear earrings. When she does, they tend to be inconspicuous, e.g. small gold hoops.

    Tattoos or unadorned skin?

She’d never consider a tattoo, since it might conflict with some character she had to play. However, if Geoffrey wanted to permanently mark her as his, she might agree. It’s a toss-up – despite her devotion to her master, her acting career is still incredibly important to her. Of course, Geoffrey will understand this, and not ask her to do anything that might interfere.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

As I mentioned earlier, Sarah grew up in New York City, so she’ll use public transport if it’s available. She does have a driver’s license, and will rent a car and drive if necessary.

    Recycle or toss?

Recycle. Of course! Sarah would be annoyed that anyone even asked that question!

Thanks for helping us get to know your heroine!
