    Counterfeits by Kris Bock @Kris_Bock #RLFblog #RomanticSuspense

Today’s featured book is Counterfeits, a Romantic Suspense by Kris Bock.

Painter Jenny Kinley has spent the last decade struggling in the New York art world. Her grandmother’s sudden death brings her home to New Mexico, but inheriting the children’s art camp her grandmother ran is more of a burden than a gift. How can she give up her lifelong dreams of showing her work in galleries and museums?

Rob Caruso, the camp cook and all-around handyman, would be happy to run the camp with Jenny. Dare he even dream of that, when his past holds dark secrets that he can never share? When Jenny’s father reappears after a decade-long absence, only Rob knows where he’s been and what danger he’s brought with him.

Jenny and Rob face midnight break-ins and make desperate escapes, but the biggest danger may come from the secrets that don’t want to stay buried. In the end, they must decide whether their dreams will bring them together or force them apart.

“Counterfeits is the kind of romantic suspense novel I have enjoyed since I first read Mary Stewart’s Moonspinners, and Kris Bock used all the things I love about this genre. Appealing lead characters, careful development of the mysterious danger facing one or both of those characters, a great location that is virtually a character on its own, interesting secondary characters who might or might not be involved or threatened, and many surprises building up to the climax.” 5 Stars – Roberta at Sensuous Reviews blog

“Counterfeits is a good mystery and will keep people guessing for most of the story. In fact, I was flipping fast through pages because I wanted to know how the story ended. There were lots of secrets and lots of surprises, so that moved the pace of the plot along nicely and kept me engaged in the story. Kris Bock is a mystery mastermind and did a nice job with that aspect of the story. I also liked the complex relationships in the story. Jenny never had it easy, and it was nice to see a heroine struggle to make it work with her friends and family (like it can be in real life).” Readers Favorite Reviews

The lost Victorio Peak treasure is the stuff of legends – a
heretic Spanish priest’s gold mine, made richer by the spoils of bandits and an
Apache raider. When Erin, a quiet history professor, uncovers a clue that may
pinpoint the lost treasure cave, she prepares for adventure. But when a hit and
run driver nearly kills her, she realizes she’s not the only one after the
treasure. And is Drew, the handsome helicopter pilot who found her bleeding in
a ditch, really a hero, or one of the enemy?
Erin isn’t sure she can trust Drew with her heart, but she’ll
need his help to track down the treasure. She heads into the New Mexico
wilderness with her brainy best friend Camie and a feisty orange cat. The
wilderness holds its own dangers, from wild animals to sudden storms. Plus, the
sinister men hunting Erin are determined to follow her all the way to the
treasure, no matter where the twisted trail leads. Erin won’t give up an
important historical find without a fight, but is she ready to risk her life – and
    her heart?
“The story has it all – action, romance, danger,
intrigue, lost treasure, not to mention a sizzling relationship….”
“Great balance of history, romance, and adventure.
Smart romance with an “Indiana Jones” feel. Well-written with an

    Interview with Kris Bock

Why did you write this book?
I live in New Mexico and I love outdoor activities such as hiking and rock climbing. I’m also fascinated by stories of buried or lost treasures, and there are many of those throughout the Southwest. My Southwest Treasure Hunters novels combine stories of treasure hunts with outdoor adventures.
The first book in the collection, The Mad Monk’s Treasure, was inspired by the legend of the Victorio Peak Treasure: a heretic Spanish priest’s gold mine, made richer by the spoils of bandits and an Apache raider. It introduced Camie as the main character’s best friend, and it also included Camie’s extraordinary cat Tiger. They make minor appearances in the second book, The Dead Man’s Treasure. My latest title features Camie and Tiger in a new adventure, inspired by another legend: the Skeleton Canyon Treasure. Each of the Southwest Treasure Hunters novels stands alone in this series mixing action and adventure with light romance.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I read pretty widely, from classic mysteries and cozy mysteries to romantic suspense, historical romance, and middle grade novels. In any genre, I tend to prefer plot-driven novels with plenty of action but not much violence.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
I pondered this for a while and could not come up with an answer. I like to become the character when I’m reading, so I like relatively ordinary people who are put in unusual circumstances.
What are you working on at the moment, and will see from you in coming months?
I write a lot of children’s books for educational publishing, so I have a number of fiction and nonfiction books for kids coming out in the next year or so. A fun one is The Genie’s Gift, a lighthearted action fantasy that draws on the mythology of The Arabian Nights. I write for children under the name Chris Eboch.
I’m also about to start a new cozy mystery series. The main character is a war correspondent forced into retirement at age 50 after being shot on the job. She returns to her hometown to live with her father and has to come to terms with her new life. Of course she gets dragged into mysteries, which she’ll be able to handle because of her background.
Please tell us about your latest book.
Camille Dagneau – beautiful, brilliant, and prickly – isn’t quick to trust, especially when a strange man has broken into her machine shop at night. Ryan MacAllister insists he’s merely looking for his missing uncle, who has disappeared while hunting for a lost treasure. He believes Camie is the key to finding the treasure, and his uncle. Camie can ignore the attraction she feels, but she won’t pass up the chance for an adventure.
Following the clues in the missing man’s journal will take Ryan, Camie, and her feisty cat Tiger on a trail through New Mexico and Arizona. They’ll investigate the Tombstone graveyard at night, uncover clues in museums, and ultimately explore Skeleton Canyon, where rumor says nineteenth-century cowboy bandits hid their treasure in a cave. They’ll face many dangers to rescue Ryan’s uncle, but trusting each other may be the biggest challenge.
If you love suspense and romance, don’t miss this gripping adventure!

Kris Bock author of The Dead Man’s Treasure answers five easy
questions to help readers get to know her better.

    Author Bio

Kris Bock writes novels of suspense
and romance involving outdoor adventures and Southwestern landscapes. The Mad
Monk’s Treasure follows the hunt for a long-lost treasure in the New Mexico
desert. In The Dead Man’s Treasure, estranged relatives compete to reach a
buried treasure by following a series of complex clues. In Counterfeits, stolen
Rembrandt paintings bring danger to a small New Mexico town. Whispers in the
Dark features archaeology and intrigue among ancient Southwest ruins. What We
Found is a mystery with strong romantic elements about a young woman who finds
a murder victim in the woods.
If you love Mary Stewart, Barbara
Michaels, or Terry Odell, try Kris Bock’s stories of treasure hunting,
archaeology and intrigue, and art theft in New Mexico. Read excerpts at www.krisbock.com or visit her Amazon page.
    What is your go-to meal
    when you dine out?
I live in a small New Mexico town where we have fast food
and Mexican/New Mexican food. While there’s something to be said for green
    chili chicken enchilada casserole
(or a good pizza), when I get to the
“big city” – Albuquerque – I want something different. Indian, sushi,
or Thai are usually my top choices.
    What’s your favorite hashtag
    to watch on Twitter?
Although I’m not a scientist, many of my friends are, and I
do science writing for children (writing as Chris Eboch). I love great stories
about women in science, so I’ve been enjoying both the humor and the attention
given to scientific women by #distractinglysexy
    What are your hobbies?
    I like hiking, rock
climbing, and watching the sunset from the patio. My home office looks out on
nature, complete with distracting wildlife such as hummingbirds, roadrunners
and foxes. My BFA in photography is used mainly to show Facebook friends how
lovely the Southwest is. It’s a good thing I like outdoor activities, because
here “nightlife” means watching the bats fly out, and then
stargazing. On a dark night, you can see the Milky Way streaked across the sky.
    When you read for pleasure,
what kind of books do you choose?
I prefer romantic suspense that is on the adventurous rather
than violent end of the spectrum as well. Mary Stewart is my role model, and my
biggest compliment was having one of my books compared to hers. I also like
mysteries if they aren’t too gory. I enjoy historical romance, because I don’t
write it. It’s easier to turn off the writer brain and enjoy the story. I write
for children as Chris Eboch, so I read a lot of middle grade novels (for ages 9
to 12). For those, I like fantasy and adventure stories. The dozen books I have
out from the library right now include mystery, romance, fantasy and humor, for
    children and adults.
    What kinds of things do
you read when you’re researching a new book?
I’ve been working on a treasure hunting series (so far The
Mad Monk’s Treasure and The Dead Man’s Treasure), so I’ve been reading about
real-life lost treasures of the Southwest. Bandits hid treasure and got killed
before reclaiming it. Travelers got lost or attacked or had to abandon their
trunks in the desert or mountains. Miners kept their gold mines top secret.
With all the stories, you might think treasure was hidden in every cave and
crevice. Many people today are still looking for those treasures. The stories
provide lots of fodder for novels. (Learn more at http://swarmchairtraveler.blogspot.com/search/label/treasure%20hunting).
