Read Someone Cruel in Coyote Creek, the new humorous #Mystery by Kris Bock @Kris_Bock #RLFblog
Someone Cruel in Coyote Creek is third in Kris Bock’s Accidental Detective series. The series starts with Something Shady at Sunshine Haven, which introduces former war correspondent Kate Tessler, a witty journalist who solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. Kate is still adjusting to her new underemployed life back in her childhood home in Phoenix when she receives an anonymous message claiming that Mayor Todd Paradise is taking bribes. Could good guy Todd, Kate’s almost boyfriend, really be corrupt or is someone trying to set him up? Kate sets out to discover the truth, with help from her multi-generational, unconventional, and often unhelpful crew.

Someone Cruel in Coyote Creek by Kris Bock
Genre: humorous mystery
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): G
Turning fifty in her childhood bedroom wasn’t on her bucket list…
Kate Tessler is convinced her sister is trying to kill her. In fact, she might prefer death to Jen’s “50 for 50 Challenge,” where Kate will try fifty new things throughout the year she turns fifty. Still adjusting to her new underemployed life back in her childhood home in Phoenix, the last thing Kate wants is to prepare for paddle boarding, especially when she receives an anonymous message claiming that Mayor Todd Paradise is taking bribes. The author claims to have proof, including photos, and challenges Kate to publish the story.
Could good guy Todd, Kate’s almost boyfriend, really be corrupt or is someone trying to set him up? Kate sets out to discover the truth, with help from her multi-generational, unconventional, and often unhelpful crew. She thrived reporting from war zones as an international war correspondent, but can she survive a deadly fundraising party, a close encounter with a taser, a turn at an open mic night, and a hundred-pound dog named Whiskers?
Why did you write this book?
As I faced fifty, I wanted to create a mystery lead dealing with some of the same issues: aging parents, concerns about financing retirement, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did.
What attracts you to this book’s genre?
Mysteries usually have an active plot, with lots going on. Humorous mysteries add quirky characters and fun dialog. Cozy mysteries or cozy-adjacent, like mine, also have a happy ending. You know you’ll get a good time and finish in a positive mood.
Is there an issue that you’re addressing with your book?
I didn’t specifically set out to educate or influence readers, but the Accidental Detective series does explore issues related to aging. Kate is dealing with the things a lot of us face in midlife: aging parents with health or memory problems, concerns about financing retirement someday, menopause, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did. She has to figure out how to live with the new limitations from an injury that requires her to walk with a cane.
Kate’s father and his friends are also major characters. They are in their seventies and eighties and are active, intelligent, and a positive force in society. At the same time, the stories explore challenges older people face, such as loneliness, being treated as incapable, and the potential for abuse by family members. Maybe readers will think twice before making assumptions about older folks they see.
What’s a fun fact about your books?
I started in children’s literature. My first published book was a middle grade novel (for ages 9-12) called The Well of Sacrifice – historical drama set in ninth-century Mayan Guatemala. It still in print and used in schools when they teach the Maya.
I also have a short series about kids who travel with a ghost hunter TV show. My other 100+ books for kids are educational work for hire, both nonfiction and fiction I’ve been a ghostwriter for some popular children’s mystery series starring your favorite young detectives. I write for kids as Chris Eboch and MM Eboch.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on the fourth book in an upcoming series about cowboy billionaires – specifically, a ranch family that finds out winning the lottery causes as many problems as it solves.
I’m also writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama. These are prequel novels set when the movie characters are teenagers. We follow the crazy antics of Melanie, Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie. We just released book 3, Felony Melanie and the Prank War. Sign up for our romantic comedy newsletter to get a free short story or find book 1 at Amazon US, or B&N, or other E-book retailers.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
In the Accidental Detective series, Someone Missing from Malapais Mountain comes out in February of 2023, with two more to follow. The Billionaire Cowboy’s Christmas comes out November 8, with four more books next year.

Read Something Deadly on Desert Drive, the new humorous #mystery by Kris Bock @Kris_Bock #RLFblog
Something Shady at Sunshine Haven opened Kris Bock’s Accidental Detective series and introduced former war correspondent Kate Tessler, a witty journalist who solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. In Something Deadly on Desert Drive, Kate and her quirky gang of sidekicks have new problems to solve.
Kris, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Something Deadly on Desert Drive.
Something Deadly on Desert Drive by Kris Bock
Genre: humorous mystery
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): G
After an injury disrupts her journalism career, Kate Tessler has to start over at 50, figuring out how to get work, make friends, and live in the heart of her loving but interfering family.
Now Kate’s father and his coffee group are worried. Their friend Larry married a younger woman who claims he has dementia and won’t let anyone see him. They think his wife and her lazy adult children are keeping him isolated so they can steal his money.
They’re determined to save Larry, and they need Kate’s help to prove what’s happening.
Before they can dig out the truth, a murder raises the stakes, and Kate’s father is among the suspects. To save him and Larry, she must reveal the real murderer – but her investigation could put all their lives at risk.
Why did you write this book?
As I faced fifty, I wanted to create a mystery lead dealing with some of the same issues: aging parents, concerns about financing retirement someday, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did. I also wanted to give Kate a reason to be adventurous and fearless, thus the background as a war correspondent.
I live in New Mexico, which I love, but I set the series in a fictional city within the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. The large senior population in Arizona attracts scams and abuse—such as arguments over inheritance, or even murders to get that inheritance sooner. Is that what’s happening here? Kate has to find out.
How are readers responding to a fifty-year-old heroine amateur detective?
Early response has been fantastic! Something Shady at Sunshine Haven made Barnes & Noble’s list of “Handpicked Favorites You’ll Love” and was the Albuquerque Journal’s “Book of the Week.” Reviews have been equally enthusiastic:
“I couldn’t put it down. I loved her smart world traveler, foreign war correspondent heroine. I loved reading a story where the heroine is so fascinating, as fascinating to me as the mystery. This promises to be an exciting series and I can’t wait for the next!” – Jane Porter on BookBub
“Kris Bock is my new favorite cozy mystery writer. I loved this book so much! I so related to Kate and her struggles to get back to her regular life. Can’t wait for the next book in this series!” – Geri Krotow on BookBub
What is your favorite genre to read?
In the last couple of years, I’ve been reading a lot of paranormal historical romance, by authors such as KJ Charles, Jordan Hawk, and Allie Therin. I tend to not want to read in the genre I’m writing. I think it’s easier to read for pleasure, without analyzing the book, if it’s something I have no plans to write myself.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
In the Accidental Detective series, Something Shady at Sunshine Haven is already out and Something Deadly on Desert Drive comes out June 21! They’re followed by Someone Cruel in Coyote Creek on September 29, with more to follow in 2023.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m two books in to a five-book series about billionaire cowboys – ranching brothers who win a huge lottery and have to adjust to the positive and negative ways that changes their lives. Book one is a Christmas story scheduled for release November 8, available for preorder now.
Two books have been published, and the third is written but we don’t have a release date set yet. Something Shady at Sunshine Haven by Kris Bock
Genre: humorous mystery
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): G
Injured in a bombing, Kate returns to her hometown in Arizona with new scars, a limp, and pain meds that give her brain fog. For the first time in her life, she’s starting to feel her age (49), even though she’s living like a teenager again: staying with her father, trying to understand why her sister resents her so much, and running into old friends who still think of her as Kitty.
Seeing her mother in an Alzheimer’s unit is the hardest part – until an old friend asks her to investigate suspicious deaths at that nursing home. Is a self-appointed “Angel of Mercy” killing patients to end their suffering? Are family members hastening their inheritance? Is an employee extorting money and killing the witnesses? Kate uses her journalism skills to track clues, but the puzzle pieces simply won’t fit. If Kate can’t uncover the truth, her mother could be next on the killer’s list.
Kate has followed the most dangerous news stories around the world. But can she survive going home?
Why did you write this book?
As I faced fifty, I wanted to create a mystery lead dealing with some of the same issues: aging parents, concerns about financing retirement someday, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did. I also wanted to give Kate a reason to be adventurous and fearless, thus the background as a war correspondent.
I in New Mexico, which I love, but I wanted to set the mystery series in a big city. In Arizona, I could create a fictional city within the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. That allows me to use this fictional city government for political issues, and make the mayor an old friend of Kate’s, without stepping on any real toes.
Arizona also provides tons of mystery opportunities. The large senior population attracts scams and abuse. You have the potential for arguments over inheritance (or even murders to get that inheritance sooner). The border with Mexico creates anxiety over immigration and various kinds of trafficking. Plus you have all the usual potential crimes in any large population. I’ll be able to keep Kate busy for years.
Where do you find ideas?
Many of my novels include real places in the Southwestern United States, although I might fictionalize the names. For example, in my treasure hunting adventure, Desert Gold, the heroine and her best friend live in a fictionalized version of Socorro, New Mexico. They hunt for the lost Victorio Peak treasure, a real Southwest legend about a heretic Spanish priest’s gold mine, made richer by the spoils of bandits and an Apache raider. I drew on personal experiences hiking in the desert for Erin and Camie’s adventures – though fortunately I’ve never stumbled on a rattlesnake nest or gotten caught in a flash flood!
Another book, What We Found, was inspired by finding the body of a murder victim while hiking in the woods. (Read about the whole experience of finding a dead body here.) Some of the Accidental Detective stories were inspired by news stories, such as a series of Taser attacks or city government employees arrested for illegal activities.
What’s a fun fact about writing your books?
I like to write while walking or jogging. I’ll get moving and then start thinking about a story problem. The motion seems to distract my body so my mind works better. If I’m walking, I can dictate entire scenes. I can’t dictate while jogging, but I’ll think out action scenes to dictate during breaks or the cool down walk. Maybe the adrenaline is inspiring – or maybe the feeling of running is reminiscent of being chased, which encourages exciting plot ideas! As a bonus, it makes the jogging time go more quickly.
What are you working on at the moment?
The first four Accidental Detective books are complete. I hope to return to the series, but at the moment I’m writing about cowboy billionaires – specifically, a ranch family that finds out winning the lottery causes as many problems as it solves. The first book in that series will be out in the fall.
The Case of the Missing Monkey and other short mystery stories by Kris Bock
Genre Mystery
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): G
Injured in a bombing, Kate returns to her hometown in Arizona with new scars, a limp, and pain meds that give her brain fog. For the first time in her life, she’s starting to feel her age (49), even though she’s living like a teenager again: staying with her father, trying to understand why her sister resents her so much, and running into old friends who still think of her as Kitty.
Kate has followed the most dangerous news stories around the world. But can she survive going home?
This free collection starts with “The Case of the Missing Monkey,” a ten-page mystery short story set in the world of The Accidental Detective series. This is followed by information about the first books in the series, Something Shady at Sunshine Haven and Something Deadly on Desert Drive, plus the first chapter of book 1. After that are three fun, short stories originally written for children.
Why did you write this book?
In this series, Kate spent thirty years traveling the world as a war correspondent. Now back in Arizona, she finds turning fifty as difficult than the mysteries she solves. This character was inspired by my own experiences. Okay, the part about turning fifty, not traveling the world as a war correspondent. I traveled a lot when younger, but not to war zones. But as I faced fifty, I wanted to create a mystery lead dealing with some of the same issues: aging parents, concerns about financing retirement someday, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did. I also wanted to give Kate a reason to be adventurous and fearless, thus the background as a war correspondent.
I didn’t necessarily intend to write humor, but both my agent and my editor said they laughed a lot. That comes from how Kate sees the world, which is how I see the world. Laughter helps with the pain.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I like romantic suspense and mystery, but nothing too gruesome. I don’t need dead bodies strewn on every page. I read a lot of romance. Lately historical romance seems to be my comfort reads. It generally makes a nice break from whatever I’m working on. Maybe because I don’t write it, I can turn off the editorial brain and just be a reader. I do write sweet contemporary romance, such as the six books in my series set in and around a cat café, as well as romantic comedy (the books with my brother mentioned below) but not historical – at least so far.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
That’s such a hard question. I’m currently rereading The Thief and its sequels by Megan Whalen Turner, and I do love Gen.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama. These are prequel novels set when the movie characters are teenagers. We follow the crazy antics of Melanie, Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie. We are wrapping up the third book now.

What books will we see from you in coming months?
