What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?
Flaming Hot Cheetos. He washes like a surgeon before surgery to keep the red tint off his fingers.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
Comfortable but Marty knows how to clean up. He’s the type to break out his nice pants, shoes, and a button-up shirt for a date. Though he spends a lot of time in his green polo for the bookstore he works at.
Does he know how to fix things?
It no doubt surprises most to learn that Marty can follow directions. He attached a bike rack to his car all on his own so he could give lifts to his friend Brandy. It didn’t fall off once.
He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
In college, Marty would take it upon himself to deliver little notes off encouragement to various girls. Sometimes he’d even drop off a rose if she was struggling. One boyfriend took that really badly and rearranged his nose for him. Marty stopped being the Don Juan of the dorms after that.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
Total clown. One of the favorite parts of his job in a bookstore is being able to get a kid the perfect book, usually one their parents think is too silly or scary. In the book, Marty waves around a bunch of sparklers to the delight of his second nieces and nephews.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
Barely cognizant of his existence. He has a long standing daily appointment with the coffee shop where he gets the biggest, sweetest caffeinated drink. He also always gets an extra donut to bring to Brandy. Sleeping in isn’t an option due to his straight-nosed brother Eldon.
Can he use chopsticks?
He thinks he can.

Take coffee, add milk and sugar. Keep adding sugar. A bit more. Top off with honey and cream.

Sheep Wars, Duolingo, Spotify, Instagram — has only three followers.

Android, and four or five years old. Working in an independent bookstore doesn’t leave him flush with cash.

Clean-shaven. Best Marty can grow is a patchy mustache.

He’s a meat and potatoes guy, but if he needed to eat on the road, he would probably buy sandwiches.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
Tanner is usually found working in his trousers or denims and a loose cotton shirt. He likes nice clothing, however, and wears a white shirt, vest and tie to church. He adds a coat when weather permits.
Does he know how to fix things?
He knows how to do everything from shoeing horses to putting up fences and repairing porch floors and stairs.
He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
His attempts to do nice things for his landlady are rebuffed, and he’s puzzled. She doesn’t want his help. He attempted to supply wood for the stove and fireplaces, but Raylene assured him she could take care of it herself. He fixed her front porch and she was offended that one of her tenants was working on her property.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
When his sister died and left him with a newborn, he didn’t know what to do, but he asked for help and figured it out. Feeling out of his element swiftly transitioned to adoring his infant niece and planning a future with her.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
He’s an early riser, waking to care for his infant niece, and then go feed and water horses at his livery. He enjoys coffee with his breakfast. He cooked simple meals for himself or ate at the hotel restaurant until moving into Raylene Cranford’s boarding house and enjoying her cooking.
How does he handle things when in a “proper” social situation?
Tanner was a captain in the Union Army, and early in the war, he attended dinners and parties at the commanding officer’s homes. He’s well-schooled in social graces.

In 1868 American west, he takes care of himself.

He does, he was brought up to be as independent as possible. But he’s also a workaholic and everything that implies, so unless he has the spare time or it’s an easy fix, he’d probably get someone he trusted to fix or help fix him so it takes less time.

Tried paddle boarding on vacation once. Wasn’t paying attention to what he was doing, too busy talking. It flipped over, he went flying and into the water. Best friend probably still has the video somewhere, but would never tell him that.

Friendly. Willing to play, especially if it’s something sporty. Likes to make them smile.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
In search of coffee, not overly grumpy, already thinking about work and his to-do list for the day.

Drinks it, loves it, inhales it, runs on it. Usually with cream, but he’ll drink it without.

Mostly clean-shaven, when he’s off work for awhile, he’ll go unshaven for a few days, but not for super long.

Not really. He’s a man of action; not a homebody.

The first time he and Sydney try to make love, it does not go well. Here’s Sydney telling her daughter about it years later:
“He was magnificent. A stallion.” Sydney’s lips curled upwards.
Olivia tut-tutted. “Yeah, right. I bet it was awkward as hell—just like most first times.”
Sydney made a face. “I did my best not to laugh. First he couldn’t figure out how to unhook my bra. Then he tripped over his pants and fell face first on the bed. Well, to be more specific, on the cat.”
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
Funny question, since he has a child he doesn’t know is his. He loves her anyway.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
Sexy.
Can he use chopsticks?
Absolutely. He has traveled all over the world and eaten all kinds of cuisine.

He likes Arab (Turkish) coffee, masbout (medium sweet).

None. For all but the last chapter, we meet him before the App Era.

Neither. He might have a Motorola cell phone.

Clean shaven. He likes to show off his pointed chin. They go with his elfin ears and hair that could belong to a leprechaun. Oh, and eyes the color of the Caribbean Sea at high noon.

He had a diamond stud in his ear, which led Sydney to believe he was a privileged Ivy League bore. He gave it up in exchange for something Sydney cherished.

Absolutely! He’s a skilled carpenter and furniture maker.
