    Unexpected by Jana Richards

    Genre Contemporary small-town romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Single dad Ben Greyson wants only to retain custody of his two stepdaughters. A dysfunctional childhood has made family the most important thing in his life. When his late wife’s parents sue for custody, a desperate Ben is left with two choices – run away with his girls or marry his next-door neighbor.

Jamie Garven wants to be a mother. She’s intrigued by her handsome new neighbor and falls in love with his little girls. Then Ben is faced with losing his children, and Jamie agrees to marry him for a chance at motherhood. They’re determined to show the world, and the girls’ grandparents, two loving parents.

Their marriage of convenience turns into unexpected love. But Ben interprets Jamie’s efforts to save their family as betrayal—they could lose everything, including each other.

Let’s chat about what to eat

First, what is your name and how old are you?

My name is Ben Grayson and I’m thirty-four.

What is the time period in which you live?

I live in the here and now. I’m a contemporary kind of guy.

    What is your favorite meal?

My favorite meal is the one I don’t have to cook! I’m kidding, sort of. I like to cook, but when the girls and I were on our own, I didn’t have a lot of time to plan and cook meals. We ended up eating take-out pizza more often than I care to admit. But now that Jamie and I are married, we share the cooking and the shopping. She makes those chores a lot of fun. As for a favorite meal, how about a favorite dish? Before we were married, Jamie taught me how to make a sweet potato casserole that I took to my sister’s house for Thanksgiving. It’s delicious and there’s not a mini marshmallow in sight! And the fact that Jamie and I made it together makes it my favorite.

If any, what food do you refuse to eat?

    Liver. Never gonna happen.

Tell us about a meal or food that says “home” to you.

Any meal shared with my daughters and Jamie says home to me. It can be as simple as scrambled eggs and toast, but as long as we’re together, I’m home.

Growing up, who was the best cook in your family?

The housekeeper! When I was growing up, my family had a lot of money. We lived in a big house in St. Paul, Minnesota and my parents employed people who cooked and cleaned for us. My mother wouldn’t have been caught dead doing domestic chores. She didn’t do any of the things other mothers did with their kids, like bake cookies. Victoria was far more interested in boosting our father’s political career and hanging out with the St. Paul elite at the country club then in doing activities with us. Victoria wasn’t your average mother. Still isn’t. (pauses, clears his throat) Can we talk about something else?

Do you keep snacks on hand, and if so, what are they?

I’ve got two growing kids, so I always have snacks on hand. Sophie is five and Bella is eight, and left to their own devices they’d probably snack on candy every chance they got. I try to have things like carrot sticks and apple slices in the house so they’re not eating too much junk food, but every once in a while we’ll go crazy on potato chips and soft drinks!

How much coffee or tea do you drink?

I like a cup or two of coffee in the morning. I never used to drink tea at all, but Jamie loves herbal tea, particularly chamomile. She has a cup every evening, and I started having one with her, because I wanted to spend time with her. Being with Jamie is the best part of my day. I’m even starting to like chamomile tea.

    Favorite alcoholic beverage?

Back before I quit drinking, I had a real fondness for vodka. More than a fondness. It was an addiction. I’m an alcoholic, like dear old dad. I’ve been sober now for nearly six years. I knew I had to stop drinking or I was going to die. And besides, I wanted to be a good father to Sophie and Bella and getting sober was the only way I was going to be able to do that.

Who are your favorite people to share meals with?

No question, my wife and kids. I’m so blessed to have them in my life. I’ll do anything to keep them.

To Heal a Heart by Jana Richards

    Genre Contemporary Small Town romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Garrett Saunders’ world changed two years ago on a road in Afghanistan. Back home, he feels like a stranger. As he struggles to find his place in the world, he meets a horse destined for the slaughterhouse and a woman bent on rescuing the strays of the world, including him.

Garrett finds purpose working with Blair—and falls in love with her. But she’s hiding a secret. Can she forgive herself and accept Garrett’s love, or will she let guilt and regret continue to rule her life?

    QUICK

    What’s your favorite book?

That’s a tough one. My favorite book is often the one I’m reading right now. But one that sticks with me, and that I’ve read a few times is Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Devereaux. In literary fiction one of my favorites is Fall on Your Knees by Anne Marie McDonald.

What’s a genre you want to write?

I would love to write a mystery series. I have an idea for one that is set during World War Two, or perhaps right after the war. A former soldier becomes a private investigator. I love a good mystery, but I’m also a romance writer, so I’d probably have a love story mixed up in the mystery somewhere.

Best writing advice you ever heard?

Write a crappy first draft and fix up the mess in revisions. I used to believe my story had to perfect the first time around. So I polished the first three chapters over and over, trying to make them perfect. It paralyzed me and meant I had a hard time finishing anything. Once I gave myself permission to be imperfect, I was able to get to “The End”. I’ve learned there’s no such thing as perfection. The real magic happens when you edit a book.

What’s the title and genre of your first book, and where can we find it?

My first published book is called Her Best Man and you can find it at all major retailers.

#CoverReveal for To Heal a Heart by Jana Richards @JanaRichards_ #RLFblog #smalltownromanceTo Heal a Heart, small town romance by Jana Richards. A wounded soldier, a broken-down horse and a woman with painful secrets. Can they find a place to call home?

Jana Richards, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about the characters in To Heal a Heart.

Secondary Characters in “To Heal a Heart”

Secondary characters are fun to write. They can be outrageous, funny, or just plain evil. They can be the best friend who provides a sounding board to the heroine, or the rival out to crush the hero. Whether they’re good or bad, secondary characters provide texture and depth to a romance novel.

In “To Heal a Heart” one of the most prominent secondary characters is Everett Branson, Blair’s grandfather. Everett, a widower, has had a couple of heart attacks and Blair decides to move to Masonville to look after him. Everett dishes out wisdom with folksy humor. He enjoys having his granddaughter’s company, but he worries about her spending too much time with him and not enough with people her own age:

“I love this spot,” she said with a contented sigh.

“Your grandma loved it, too. We used to sit out here most evenings in the summer. She used to say she’d be stuck inside all winter. She wasn’t going to miss one minute of summer if she could help it.”

“I miss her.” Anna Branson had been her favorite person in the world. Both she and Granddad had stuck by her no matter what she’d done.

“Yup, so do I. You’re a lot like her, you know. Same determination, same sunny outlook on life. My Anna was a joy, and so are you.”

Blair laid her hand on his arm, her throat constricting with emotion. “That’s the nicest thing you could ever say to me.”

“It’s only the truth.” He set the rocker in motion, pushing it with his foot. “But a young woman like you should be out with other young people sometimes. It’s not good for you to be stuck out here with an old goat like me.”

“I’m not stuck anywhere. This is exactly where I want to be.”

“Blair, girl, you need a life.”

Garrett’s parents, especially his mother Grace, have always provided him with love, emotional support and a helping hand when he needed it. Now is one of those times. After being injured in Afghanistan, he moves home to North Dakota and stays with his parents while he tries to figure out what to do now that his military career is over. He appreciates the concern they’ve shown him, but it can be a source of guilt:

Garrett went to her and enfolded her in his arms. She was tiny, no more than five foot two, but she was one of the strongest people he knew. “I love you, Mom.”

“I love you too, Garrett. I only want you to be happy.”

    “I know.”

He kissed her cheek once more before leaving the kitchen. To Grace, happiness meant having work he enjoyed, along with a wife and a family. But he didn’t know if he could accomplish any of those goals. All those things, which he’d once assumed would be his one day, seemed an impossible dream now. Knowing his mother’s happiness depended on him getting his act together overwhelmed him.

    But Grace is no pushover:

“My grandmother used to #CoverReveal for To Heal a Heart by Jana Richards @JanaRichards_ #RLFblog #smalltownromancehave beautiful flowerbeds.” Blair’s voice was wistful. “Now they’re mostly full of weeds. I wish I could revive them.”

“I could help you with that,” his mother said.

Blair shook her head. “Oh no, I couldn’t ask you to do that.”

Grace waved away her objection. “Nonsense. Like I said, gardening is a labor of love for me. And you’d be helping me out. I have some plants that need dividing, and I don’t have anywhere to plant them. I could put some of them in your yard.”

    “Mrs. Saunders—”

“It’s Grace, remember?” His mother smiled brightly, and Garrett knew from experience Blair didn’t have a hope of changing her mind now that it was made up. “It would be fun for me. You wouldn’t want to deny me my fun, would you?”

Everett and Grace have always been there for Blair and Garrett. But Blair’s mother Victoria was an entirely different kind of secondary character to write. She’s anything but likeable. The trick was not to turn her into a cartoon-type villain. In this scene Blair compares her mother to Grace:

How different Grace Saunders was from her own mother. She couldn’t imagine Victoria Greyson digging in the dirt, or patiently explaining the differences between various perennials to her. If Victoria wanted a flowerbed, she hired someone to create it and tend it for her.

All Blair ever wanted was a mother who would make time for her. Care for her with kindness. Her parents had always been more interested in maintaining appearances than in actually parenting. They showed off their children to their wealthy, powerful friends like trophies they trotted out whenever it suited them. She remembered attending political rallies with her parents and brothers as a little girl. Her mother would dress her in fancy clothes, and she’d be expected to sit still through long, boring speeches. If she fidgeted, she’d receive a painful pinch to her knee. God help her if she cried out. Blair could still hear Victoria’s voice hissing in her ear, “For God’s sake, smile!”

She pushed away the hurtful memories and the longing. She couldn’t change anything about the past, and she couldn’t change her parents.

I tried to give each of my secondary characters a distinct personality and a little charm to keep them from being cardboard cutouts. But mostly, they were a lot of fun to write!
