Saying goodbye to the Romance Lives Forever blog #RLFblog

As of today, Dec 1, 2023, I am closing Romance Lives Forever. Why? I'm organized and efficient, but with as much as I want to do going forward, I can no longer maintain RLF. I used Triberr to amplify the blog on social media, especially Twitter. The new requirements and limits from Twitter cut exposure by a huge margin. Triberr brought 80%+ of all readers to the blog. Since it's no longer active, that cost another huge drop in traffic.

It costs a bit to run the blog, register its domain name, pay for the signup/reminder service, and it takes time to chase down people who send things last minute (or not at all). Plus I have to let authors know the service is available. Then I format the material, resize the images, upload everything, and schedule its promotion. Alas, time and money won out.

I started the blog in 2009, and went to daily posts in 2010. I've explored many ways to do all this and still find time to write and market for myself. I hired an assistant last year, but only I can write the stories in my heart. I am loath to give up, not being a quitter by nature.

    When it's Time to Quit

Last month, I heard Becca Syme (one of my mentors) say that it's time to quit when you no longer love what you do. Becca is brilliant. I took her Strengths for Writers and Write Better-Faster courses in the last 12 months. Each came with 6 months of follow up calls and targeted counseling. Changed my life in so many ways. Here's the video I'm referring to if you're curious. https://youtu.be/GRG5UeFYihE

Daily monitoring this blog is not what I love. What I love is supporting other authors, and the blog was how I did that. I will still support them but in ways that leave time for my own priorities. It took more than a year for me to decide to do this (or rather, stop doing this). I almost didn't commit to 2023, but felt guilty for quitting. It wasn't until I heard Becca's comment last month that I gave myself permission to do what I had to do. She wasn't talking about blogging, or anything even close to what I was doing. She was talking about writing in the golden age of publishing (the new era we've recently entered), and how to know what to do next (or stop doing).

The video was from Ream, which is a new subscription platform for authors. I've just launched mine. I attended an accelerator class with a handful of other authors in a small-group setting for mentorship. Wonderful support and I learned things I never expected.

Some of the Many Authors Who Made RLF a Success

Adriana Kraft, Alexa Aston, Alina K Field, Amber Daulton, Anne Kane, Brenda Sparks, Daryl Devore, Dee S Knight, Effrosyni Moschoudi, Faye Hall, Iris Blobel, J Arlene Culiner, Jami Gray, Jana Richards, Karen Cino, Kate Hill, Kris Bock, Linda O'Connor, Lisabet Sarai, Livia Quinn, NJ Walters, Seelie Kay, Tena Stetler, Tina Donahue, Veronica Scott, Vicki Batman

I'll miss the blog. It's been a part of my life during most of my career as an author. I look forward to what comes after this, and having the time and freedom to pursue the next steps.

Thank you for being part of my journey. If you'd like to support me and keep up with what I'm doing next, here's how:

Christmas at Solace Lake by Jana Richards @JanaRichards_ #RLFblog #Contemporary #SmallTownRomance

In Christmas at Solace Lake, Jana Richards’ new contemporary small-town romance, a series of thefts threatens everyone’s holiday spirit.

Jana, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

Christmas at Solace Lake by Jana Richards

Christmas at Solace Lake by Jana Richards Genre – contemporary small-town romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG to R

An emergency brings Drew Barnes to Solace Lake Lodge, an inn deep in the Minnesota woods owned by his aunt and uncle. He’s sure desperation is the only reason they’d allow him to fill in as their bookkeeper. No one in his family has believed in him since his mistake got him fired from his previous job. Soon after he arrives, Drew is disheartened to discover thefts and financial irregularities. The last thing he wants is to be put in the middle of another crime.

Sous chef Celeste Bishop has made a good life for herself and her nine-year-old daughter in the three years she’s worked, and lived, at Solace Lake Lodge. After being unfairly fired, this was the only job she could get, and she’s grateful her gamble on the lodge paid off. The only sticking point is the isolation since she never learned to drive. How can she show her daughter independence when she’s always relying on others?

Drew sees Celeste’s frustration and offers to teach her to drive. A powerful attraction ignites between them, and soon deeper, stronger emotions blossom. Drew is all in, but Celeste resists her feelings. She’s nine years older than Drew. An interracial relationship didn’t work for her parents. And loving Drew feels like a betrayal of her deceased husband.

As Christmas approaches, the thefts escalate. Can Drew stop the thief and redeem himself in his family’s eyes—and his own? And can he convince Celeste they deserve the gift of a happily ever after this Christmas?

    Describe the perfect vacation.

In my opinion, vacations should be relaxing. My perfect vacation would see me lounging on a shady deck with a cold drink in one hand and a book in the other. Bonus points if the deck overlooks a body of water. Sure, sometimes I’ll go sightseeing or maybe play golf, but only when I want to.

Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.

I had a Tammy doll that was sort of a Barbie wanna-be. She had blonde hair and blue eyes, but that’s where the similarity with Barbie ended. She was somewhat bigger/taller with flat feet so none of Barbie’s clothes or shoes fit her. She was also less curvy than Barbie. Obviously, Tammy didn’t catch on because while Barbie is still going strong, Tammy is nowhere to be found. But back in the sixties, I adored her!

    What are your hobbies?

I play a little golf in the summer and dabble in gardening, at least enough to make the front of my house look nice. I really enjoy live theatre and hope to see a play or two this coming winter season. This past summer I started volunteering at my local zoo as a “zoo ambassador.” Our job is to make our visitors’ experience at the zoo as enjoyable as possible, and so far it’s been a lot of fun.

When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?

I mostly read romance. I enjoy contemporary romance, small town, historical, and romantic suspense. I also enjoy mysteries, especially cozy mysteries. Some day I hope to write a mystery series of my own!

What kinds of things do you read when you’re researching a new book?

It very much depends on the book. For instance, Strong Enough, book 4 in my Masonville series, deals with sexual assault and child sexual abuse, so I read a couple of biographies written by survivors, as well as information online. For my World War Two books, I’ve read several books on different aspects of the war, including war brides and the training of air crews in Canada. For my upcoming release, Christmas At Solace Lake, (releasing October 18, 2023) one thing I researched online was ways employees could steal from their employer. I also read a lot of recipes, especially Christmas recipes, since my heroine Celeste is a sous chef and a baker.

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Stanley from Take a Chance on Me by Jana Richards @JanaRichards_ @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsLove at first sight goes awry in Take a Chance on Me, a contemporary romance by Jana Richards and book 2 in the Victorian Mansion series. When Darcy discovers Nick plans to tear down her beloved Victorian to build a condo complex, she vows to fight him, despite the attraction between them.

Jana, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about Take a Chance on Me.

Take a Chance on Me by Jana Richards

    Genre – contemporary romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

Teacher Darcy Ferris loves travel almost as much as she loves her Toronto neighborhood. But no matter how far she roams, she always returns to the genteelly shabby Victorian mansion where she grew up, the last place her father lived. Darcy’s world is turned upside-down when the Victorian is slated for demolition.

Since the death of architect Nick Cummings’ mother, his father has retreated from his real estate development business, and from life. In a desperate attempt to interest him in something once more, Nick buys a beat-up Victorian mansion and draws up plans to replace it with a Victorian-inspired condo. He hopes his father’s old spark will return if he helps him build the new condo. But he doesn’t expect such opposition from his new tenant, Darcy Ferris. Nor does he expect to fall in love with her.

Nick and Darcy must come to terms with the past before they can forge a future together. And they’ll need to take the biggest chance of all – on love.

Meet Stanley from Take a Chance on Me

    Full name: Stanley

    Nickname: n/a

    Gender: male

    Species: Pure bred Pug

Physical description: scrunched-up face and nose, short legs, curly tail, tan body with black around his nose and ears.

Relationship to main character: Stanley belongs to Jenny Ferris, Darcy’s grandmother. Darcy is looking after Stanley temporarily while her grandmother’s leg is in a cast.

Relationship to the villain/antagonist: Stanley takes an instant dislike to Nick when he moves into the Victorian mansion. What does he know that Darcy doesn’t?

Where this furbaby came from: When Stanley was rescued from a puppy mill, Darcy’s grandmother Jenny adopted him.

What inspired you to create this character?

My dog Lou. She was a pug/terrier cross, not a pure-bred pug like Stanley, but she had a lot of Stanley’s quirks. Like her love of food, her stubbornness, and her absolute loyalty. But unlike Stanley, Lou never growled at anyone in her life. She loved everybody!

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

Darcy likes Stanley and is happy to look after him while her grandmother recovers, but she knows his heart belongs to Grandma Jenny. He merely tolerates Darcy because she feeds him. Darcy is grateful to the little mutt because it was his frantic barking that alerted neighbors when Jenny tripped and broke her ankle.

What does the villain/antagonist think about this furbaby?

Nick has never had a dog, so he’s wary of Stanley’s growls and barks. For some reason, the dog has it out for him. If they’re going to get along, Stanley’s going to have to learn who’s the alpha dog in the Victorian mansion.

    What does this furbaby eat?

Just about anything! Again, I modeled Stanley’s appetite after my dog Lou’s. She loved food and had a particular fondness for vegetables such as raw carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. But she REALLY loved fruit, especially strawberries. More than once I caught her in our garden raiding the strawberry patch! As she got older, her stomach wasn’t quite as strong as it had once been and we had to give her smaller meals, three times a day. If too much time passed between meals, she’d throw up. I gave Stanley the same delicate stomach and love of raw carrots!

What does this furbaby add to the story?

Stanley adds humor. His antics are funny and a little silly. But he also allows Nick an opportunity to grow and learn what it’s like to have a pet. Nick’s mother was allergic, so he didn’t grow up with animals in the house. He doesn’t know what to make of Stanley when he barks and growls at him. But when Darcy needs him, he takes control and gets over his apprehension about spending time with Stanley.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

I think readers will enjoy the humor Stanley brings to the story, and because he’s based on a real dog, readers will find him true to life. And really, who can resist an adorable pug!

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

Darcy first meets Nick on the front porch of the Victorian mansion as she and Stanley arrive home from a walk. Darcy is instantly attracted to Nick, but she senses there’s something he’s not telling her. Stanley senses it, too, and, to Darcy’s embarrassment, he pees on Nick’s leg!

    About Layla and Leelou

This post is called Fiction Furbaby, but perhaps your own pet does not have fur. If you have a pet that has fins, wings, scales, or other features, please tell us about them here.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

Layla and Leelou are two senior calico cats that we recently adopted. When I’m writing, Layla will sometimes sleep on the mat I put down for them in my office, but if she’s hungry, she will paw at my leg, as if to say, “Jana. Jana. Jana. Feed me! Feed me now!” Leelou always demands attention. She’ll jump up on my desk and stand on the keyboard, or crawl onto my lap and make herself comfy. I’m constantly covered in cat hair. It’s not easy to work when they’re around, especially if they’re hungry. But I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Where did you find your pet?

Actually, they found us. Their original owner passed away, and they were taken to the Humane Society. My daughter’s friend had only eight days to find them a new home or they’d be surrendered to the Humane Society permanently. She asked us if we’d be interested in adopting them. Considering their age (they were 13 at the time and are nearly 14 years old now) and the fact that these two sisters had been together all their lives, we felt we had to take them in. We didn’t feel confident that anyone would want to adopt two such senior cats together. Despite the cat hair everywhere, we haven’t regretted our decision. These ladies belong in our home!

Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

After Christmas, my local pet store had Christmas-themed catnip toys on sale. I picked up a Christmas stocking-shaped toy and brought home for the ladies. They went nuts over it! When they started fighting over the toy, I ran back to the pet store and purchased another one!

Read the series: Strong Enough by Jana Richards @JanaRichards_ #RLFblog #ContemporarySmallTownRomanceWhen the trauma from Charlotte’s past roars back to life in Jana Richards’ new small town romance Strong Enough, both Charlotte and Damon are forced to confront their painful histories—or die trying.

Jana, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your series.

Strong Enough in the Masonville Series

    Genre Contemporary Small Town Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Charlotte Saunders has a full life—a rewarding career as a nurse, meaningful volunteer work at a dog shelter, and family, friends and pets she adores. But no matter how hard she tries, she can’t forget the horrible event that’s haunted her for ten years.

A survivor of childhood sexual abuse, Damon Greyson now helps others who have suffered trauma. His experience and intuition alert him to trouble in Charlotte’s past, and he wants to help her, if only she’d let him.

As they work together to help veterans suffering from PTSD and neglected dogs needing loving homes, their feelings for each other deepen. But when the trauma from Charlotte’s past roars back to life, both are forced to confront their painful histories—or die trying.

Which book is this in the series?

Strong Enough is book 4 in the Masonville Small Town Romance series.

How many books do you plan for the series?

I always planned to do four books in this series so Strong Enough is the final book.

    How many books are completed?

All four books are now completed.

What characters are the main stars in your series?

The series primarily centers around two families of siblings, the Saunders family and the Greyson family. The Saunders siblings, Garrett, Charlotte and Lauren, grew up on a farm just outside Masonville, North Dakota. When they were kids, the Greyson siblings, Ben, Damon and Blair, spent their summers at their grandparents’ farm just down the road from the Saunders farm. They became friends and spent many happy summer days together. Then everyone grew up and went their separate ways. But then, years later, they begin returning to Masonville to find the peace, security and sense of home they’ve missed.

What is the overall theme in this series?

The overall theme is overcoming adversity and trauma with the love and help of family, community and the person they love.

Please list the series titles below, in any order you prefer.

    Child of Mine, book 1
To Heal a Heart, book 2
    Unexpected, book 3
    Strong Enough, book 4

What did you like best about writing this series?

I learned so many things during the writing of this series. I learned about the plight of rescue animals, like dogs and horses, and the dedicated volunteers who help them. I researched and was able to highlight the horrific, long-lasting damage that sexual abuse inflicts on its victims. This series was a way for me to talk about issues that are important to me while still telling an engaging, entertaining love story.

Jana, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about Child of Mine.

Child of mine by Jana Richards

    Genre contemporary smalltown romance

Lauren didn’t intend to sleep with her brother-in-law Cole on the day of her husband’s funeral. But now that she is pregnant, she’s not sorry. Cole’s given her a baby, a long-wished-for miracle. He’s been her friend forever, though she never told him or anyone else how unhappy her marriage to his cheating brother was. And she’s afraid to tell the small town that considered her husband a hero that the baby isn’t his.

Cole’s been in love with Lauren since he was sixteen. It kills him that everyone believes the baby is his dead brother’s. All he wants is to claim the baby, and Lauren, as his own. Though she marries him, will Lauren’s heart ever be his?

Lauren must tell the truth or risk losing Cole. Is her newly-discovered love for him greater than her fear of scandal in her hometown?

Meet Brady from Child of Mine

    Full name: Brady

    Gender: male

    Species: dog – Labrador Retriever

Physical description: fairly large, beautiful golden hair, sweeping tail and a smile on his face.

Relationship to main character: Brady is Cole’s dog and lives with him.

    Relationship to the villain/antagonist: n/a

Where this furbaby came from: I don’t actually say in the book where Brady came from, but since Cole is a veterinarian and sometimes helps out at shelters, I believe Brady was rescued from a shelter.

What inspired you to create this character?

Like I said, my main character, Cole, is a veterinarian. I worked for several years for the veterinary association in my province, and most, if not all, the vets I knew had a pet, and often more than one. So, it seemed logical to me that Cole would have a dog. Cole is a compassionate, caring person who enjoys having an animal in his life.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

Cole adores Brady, even though Brady’s exuberance can get him into trouble at times. Part of the reason Cole adopts Brady is for the company he provides. Cole is busy with work, but before Lauren comes back into life, he comes home to an empty house every night. Brady provides companionship to Cole and makes him laugh, something he really needs.

How do other characters react to or interact with this furbaby?

When Lauren and Cole marry and she moves in with Cole and Brady, Brady falls head over heels for her. Cole jokingly says Brady has completely forgotten about him. When Cole and Lauren’s love is tested and they’re going through difficult times, Brady sticks close to Lauren and provides her with unconditional love and support.

What is this furbaby’s natural habitat?

Brady lives in Cole’s house in Masonville, North Dakota. His natural habitat is the sofa, or in his human’s bed, especially if Lauren is there.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

I think Brady adds some comic relief and a shoulder for his humans to cry on.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

I think Brady will remind readers of dogs they’ve known and loved and lived with. Brady is a member of Cole and Lauren’s family. Sometimes he gets into trouble, but the unconditional love he provides gives his humans much needed solace when they need it most.
