Initiative–a smoldering new short story collection by Emerald. Heat and boldness abound in Initiative, a new collection of thirteen sizzling short stories from award-winning author Emerald.

Welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Let’s play Is It True with today’s guest, Emerald, author of Initiative: Tales of Erotic Boldness, an erotica short story collection. This is a game with yes and no questions. Writers can elaborate on answers as much as they choose.

Initiative: Tales of Erotic Boldness by Emerald

    Genre: Erotic romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

From audacious proposals to first-time exploits to newfound inner confidence, taking initiative delves into the risqué in these thirteen smoldering tales. An accidental catalyst invokes a bold move in “Fulfillment,” while the brassiness in “Shift Change” belongs entirely to narrator Stacey. “Who’s on Top?” sees a meeting between fans of rival baseball teams turn into a game of chance and wits, and “The Beast Within” offers a present-day “Beauty and the Beast” rendition that puts a twist on ugliness, beauty, pain, and pleasure—and the surprising ways they can intertwine.

Sometimes brazen, sometimes subtle, the initiatives between these pages always showcase the erotic and how it can both inspire and evoke our most emboldened selves.

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?

It is not. I have had two prior short story collections published: If… Then: A Collection of Erotic Romance Stories and Safe: A Collection of Erotic Stories. This is the first one with a particular theme.

this book is part of a series?

No, it’s a short story collection, and the stories within it are not related to each other (except by the title theme).

you did research for this book?

Yes! With thirteen stories, the chances are at least a few of them are going to require some degree of research. Ironically, one of the stories that required the most was set in a place that is very familiar to me, namely a Midwestern state fair. But because I don’t live there anymore, I wasn’t there when I was writing the story and couldn’t remember how the fairgrounds were laid out and things like lighting, hours, and how deserted the section where I wanted the sex scene to take place would be at what time. I also had to research certain specifications of the farm equipment that comes into play in the story.

“Winter” also required a considerable amount of research, largely because it was set in a place I wasn’t so familiar with. I have been to Alaska, but not during the winter, and I became quite immersed in this story’s research—Alaska seems like a mysterious, beautiful place, and a lot of the photographs and materials from its tourism websites speak to this. I felt very drawn to the setting as I was writing the story.

Then there was research that was less extensive but aimed toward specificity, such as looking up the history of Beauty and the Beast and finding certain details about the original story, as well as ones that had tended to remain through various versions, so I could reference them in “The Beast Within,” which is a modern-day rewrite of the tale.

Even with short stories, research, in my experience, is part of the writing process, and it’s an aspect I’ve usually tended to enjoy.

some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)

Yes, there are two stories that feature pets—and in fact, in both cases, the pet is at least partially responsible for the characters’ either meeting or connecting. In “Fulfillment,” the main character Kristen has a yellow tabby cat named Cheerio, and in “Changing Tides,” character Ray has a border collie mix named Jameison.

this book has more than one genre?

I would maybe say subgenre, given that it is all certainly erotica, but some of the stories in the book could be considered erotic romance more than erotica.

you speak more than one language?

No, just English, though I know a rudimentary amount of American Sign Language that I learned in elementary school. I also know a bit of French, though less than it seems I should, given how many years I took of it in high school and college!

you grew up where you live now?

It is not. I grew up in Iowa and lived in my hometown until I was twenty-one. I then moved to Pittsburgh, where I got my undergrad degree, moved to the Washington, DC, area for grad school, moved to Spokane, WA, to pursue an MFA (I ended up choosing to leave that program before attaining the degree), and then returned to the DC area, where I’ve been for about the last fifteen years. I live a little west of the metro area now in a small town in Virginia.

    you love to read?

Yes, though I’ve tended to not do it as much as I’d like due to feeling like I “should” be doing other things. I’ve loved reading since I was a kid. I’ve tended to read more nonfiction than fiction in recent years, but I am specifically aiming to get back to reading for pleasure of late. As strange as it seems, it was only within the last year and a half that I discovered how much I adore Jane Austen’s work! I picked up Northanger Abbey on a whim last year and eagerly worked my way through Austen’s entire catalogue over the next several months. It really reminded me how awesome it is to read fiction purely for pleasure and entertainment.

    you are never late?

Ha! Alas, I wish the very asking of this question wasn’t so laughable. Ironically, I despise being late even though I have frequently tended to be…I truly seem to have no sense of time.

    you love pizza?

Depends on what kind. I seem to be in the minority of most of the people I’ve known in that my favorite kind of pizza is sauerkraut.

    you love sushi?

I do love sushi, though there are some things I have not tried and don’t feel an interest in trying. But I adore spicy tuna hand rolls and hand rolls in general because I’m such a fan of the seaweed.

    you have a pet?

I have four! Two sibling dogs (that I still call “the puppies” even though they’re five now) from the local no-kill shelter where I volunteer, and two cats who are also rescues—one is blind (was born that way) and one had to have her front left leg amputated prior to coming into my care. I end each monthly issue of my author newsletter with a picture of one or more of them!

Will secrets destroy them a second time around?

you lost sleep while writing this book?

Is It True: Timeless Honor by Amber Daulton @amberdaulton1 #RLFblog #TimeTravel #Romance

Welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Let’s play Is It True with today’s guest, Amber Daulton, author of Timeless Honor, a Time Travel Romance. This is a game with yes and no questions. Writers can elaborate on answers as much as they choose.

    Timeless Honor by Amber Daulton

    Genre Time Travel Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

Jaye Ramsey decided to prove to her eccentric grandmother that time travel only existed in movies by vacationing in Bolivia with her friends. When she woke up in Hawksatter, England, 1735–the same town her grandmother supposedly vanished from as a young woman–Jaye found refuge at a hunting lodge but the strapping, reclusive baron who took her in reminded her all too well she was a lone woman at his mercy.

Accused of murdering his newly-wedded wife a decade earlier, Lord Lucas Kenway closed the family farm and shut out the world. He never expected the little spitfire he claimed responsibility for would turn his quiet life upside down. Pushed together by fate and his meddling servants, Lucas wanted Jaye on his own terms and refused to surrender his hardened heart.

Then a mysterious wise man offered Jaye a way home.

Should she return to the future and the only life she’d ever known, or stay in an uncertain past as a stranger in a new world?

    Is it true:

    This is your first book?

Nope. Timeless Honor is my sixth publication.

This book is part of a series?

Yes. It’s book three in the Mirrors of Time series, in which five authors each wrote a story. I enjoyed writing for this series so much that I wrote a second story, titled Timeless Beginnings, which is separate from the series but serves as a prequel for Timeless Honor. Both of my Timeless books are standalones.

You lost sleep while writing this book?

I always lose sleep when I’m writing. My mind just won’t shut down as I envision each scene and come up with dialogue.

You did do research for this book?

Oh, yes! Tons of research about the Salar de Uyuni (the salt flats in Bolivia) and about the Georgian era in England.

Some characters in this book are not human?

Most of my characters are human, expect for a few hunting dogs. I’m not sure how I would classify the mystical old wise man. He was supernatural, sure, but human? It’s hard to say.

This book has more than one genre?

True. It begins in modern day (a contemporary), but then the heroine travels through history (time travel) and winds up in the past (historical). So, technically, it fits into three sub-genres of romance.

You speak more than one language?

    LOL! I wish.

You grew up where you live now?

True. I would love to move elsewhere, but my hubby and I have a good situation where we are.

    You love to read?

Duh. I’m an author. Books and me? We’re tight.

    You are never late?

Most of the time. Usually, I’m early.

    You love pizza?

YES! With extra black olives, green peppers, and onion.

    You love sushi?

Yes and no. No, as in I don’t like the food. Yes, as in I love and miss my departed cat Sushi with all my heart. She was such a sweet kitty and crossed the rainbow bridge about 12 years ago.

    You have a pet?

I have two cats–Darby and Pepper–who are both 7 years old. I did have a third cat, Sox, but he passed away last month. He was only 3. I’m still grieving over Sox’s loss, but loving on Darby and Pepper soothes the pain.

Is It True: Ice Princess by Tricia Schneider @TriciaSchneider #RLFblog #FantasyRomanceWelcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Let’s play Is It True with today’s guest, Tricia Schneider, author of Ice Princess, a fantasy romance. This is a game with yes and no questions. Writers can elaborate on answers as much as they choose.

    Ice Princess by Tricia Schneider

    Genre Fantasy Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Princess Lily is determined to save her kingdom from the evil influence of the sorcerer in their midst. When she makes her stand, he curses her beloved to turn into a dragon and casts a spell that seals her in a block of ice where she will sleep for all eternity.

Eternity arrives earlier than expected when Rick Stamos tears down a wall to the tavern he’s renovating. He never expects to find a woman encased in ice hidden in his basement. After melting the ice, he’s more surprised when the woman wakes and claims he is her beloved.

Did the spell that kept Lily frozen for so long also curse Rick? Is he really her beloved or a stranger with the same face?

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?

No. This is my sixteenth book published. I have a few more future books scheduled for release. By the end of the year, I’ll be up to twenty.

this book is part of a series?

Yes and no. I didn’t originally write Ice Princess as part of a series, but readers have been asking for more. I’m considering writing other books set in this world.

you lost sleep while writing this book?

Yes. My deadline for this book was approaching fast. I didn’t know if I would make it or not. It was nerve-wracking, but I did it!

you did research for this book?

Yes. The story takes place in England, so I did some research on the setting.

some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)

Yes. Lily’s beloved is turned into a dragon by an evil sorcerer.

this book has more than one genre?

Yes, if we’re talking subgenres. It’s a romance, no question about that. It could be Fantasy Romance or Paranormal Romance.

you speak more than one language?

Yes. I speak English. Well, since I was born in the USA, I speak American English. I took five years of German in school. I’m not completely fluent, but I managed to get by when I visited Germany several years ago. I enjoy reading books written in German. I can read it better than speak it!

I also began teaching myself and my children sign language. I started learning simple signs when they were babies. It was easier for them to sign what they wanted (thirsty, hungry, etc.) before they learned how to speak. With each baby I had, my older children continued to learn. Again, we’re not completely fluent, but learning it has become handy in some moments. While I worked at the bookstore near my home, a deaf customer came into our store one day. I still remember his smile when I answered him with sign language.

you grew up where you live now?

That’s true. I’ve traveled to 2 countries and visited nearly half of the United States, but I’ve always made my home in Pennsylvania. I currently live in the town directly next to the one where I grew up. I really haven’t moved far.

    you love to read?

Absolutely true! I’ve been an avid reader all my life. I loved books so much I worked in a bookstore for 12 years. And if Waldenbooks hadn’t closed its doors back in 2010, I’d still be working there.

    you are never late?

Not true. I always try to be on time, but it’s a hassle leaving the house with four kids. Inevitably, someone is missing a shoe or something and we all need to search for fifteen minutes before leaving the house. My life is typically chaos!

    you love pizza?

Yes! There’s a pizza shop in my town called Messina’s Pizza that makes the BEST Sicilian pizza! My favorite!

    you love sushi?

    I don’t know. I’ve never had sushi.

    you have a pet?

Yes, I have 2 cats, Cassius and Harley. I found them at different times as stray kittens in my backyard. Or rather, they found me!

Steamy is the best word to describe the Kents. After work, lawyer Marcus wants nothing more than to hold wife, Toni–his “Sweetness”–into his arms. He knows exactly how to make every inch of her hot body shiver under his touch. He is willing to do everything in his power to make her happy, except one.

Leaving her downtown practice, psychologist Toni heads uptown to curl up with Marcus, her sexy, younger husband. Their fiery passion is usually fully ablaze until she makes a demand that threatens to snuff it out.

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?

No. Sweet Love, Bitter Fruit is my second book

this book is part of a series?

Yes, Sweet Love, Bitter Fruit is book two in the exciting Brothers in Law romance series. It features Marcus and Toni Kent, two characters that readers fell in love with in book one. They have a steamy marriage jeopardized by infertility and a hot intern looking to get Marcus in her bed.

you lost sleep while writing this book?

Yes. Loads and loads of sleep lost, especially while I wrote Toni’s perspective. I wanted to give her a voice to which readers can connect. She makes a pretty selfish decision, and I wanted to make it understandable.

you did research for this book?

Yes. I often have to research while writing. I include characters from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of life issues that make it important for me to acquire information about different cultures and issues. In Sweet Love, Bitter Fruit, I had to gather a lot of research about infertility and in vitro. It was work, but it was worth it.

some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)

No … well … yeah, let’s leave this as a no.

this book has more than one genre?

Yes. While Sweet Love, Bitter Fruit is primarily a romance, it does contain some gripping suspense. On top of everything else the Kent family is going, they have to worry about a stalker roaming around and threatening to hurt one of them.

you speak more than one language?

Yes. I can speak classical Arabic.

you grew up where you live now?

No. My family were suburban nomads. We never stayed any place long.

    you love to read?

Yes. My entire family does. Our home is loaded with books of all kinds.

    you are never late?

No. I am always late. I have a lot of demands in my life. Often things collide, and I have to do some hustling. A lot of people who know me will tell me an earlier time so I won’t be late. Give me a 20-minute cushion, and I will most likely be punctual.

    you love pizza?

    Yes. Who doesn’t?

    you love sushi?

Yes. I like cooked sushi. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that not all sushi is raw. It’s great because I don’t eat bait.

    you have a pet?

No. I had a pet chicken–long story involving a begging kid at a small gardening center–but someone stole it. I was very busted up about Mad Dog. She would perch and cackle outside my kitchen door to be fed and let me know she laid eggs. *sniff*
