Cast off and fill the sails for love and adventure; journey the high seas, and from mountain heights to cavern depths on an epic quest to save the future of magic with the fantasy romance series, the Windmaster Novels by Helen Henderson.

    Windmaster Golem by Helen Henderson

    Genre Fantasy Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

Kiansel, sister to the current Oracle of Givneh, is expected to one day assume the mantle and lead the temple’s followers. Her emerging powers force an impossible decision. To answer the siren call of magic requires she turn her back on her family, her heritage and the teachings of the Oracle.

Banishment to a remote village as healer, a position he despised, fueled Relliq’s desire for revenge. The discovery of a mythical city and an army of clay soldiers provided the means to control all mages—including the one he wanted most—Kiansel.

Brodie, weaponsmith for the School of Mages couldn’t refuse the archmage’s request to act as escort for a healing team fighting a curse upon the land. But how can a man without any magic of his own fight a curse or protect a friend from an invisible stalker?

Which book is this in the series?

Windmaster Golem is the third tale of the Archmage Lord Dal and Lady Ellspeth, captain of Windmaster. However, the Windmaster Novels can be read in sequence or each books as a stand-alone.

How many books do you plan for the series?

There are three books in the era of Dal and Ellspeth, and one based on a legend hidden in the mists of time.

    How many books are completed?

    The entire series is complete.

What characters are the main stars in your series?

Windmaster and Windmaster Legacy follow the adventures of Lord Dal and Lady Ellspeth. They are secondary characters in Windmaster Golem as they guide the next generation.

What is the overall theme in this series?

Love has a magic of its own.

Please list the series titles below, in any order you prefer.

Windmaster, Windmaster Legacy, Windmaster Golem, Windmaster Legend

What did you like best about writing this series?

Windmaster was my debut novel and has a special place in my heart. One of the reasons is the kick-ass heroine, Captain Ellspeth. She was smart, a capable leader who had earned the respect of her men, and like me has silver hair. I think I had the most fun writing the interactions between Lord Dal and Tairneach, the head stallion of the falaire herd that called the vale around the Isle of Mages their own.

What other books (not in this series, have you written?)

The Dragshi Chronicles (Dragon Destiny, Hatchlings Curse, Hatchling’s Mate, Hatchling’s Vengeance, First Change: Legends From The Eyrie), Imprisoned in Stone, Fire and Amulet, Hearth and Sand: Stories From The Front Lines and the Homefront

Trelleir is a true dragon whose magic allows him to take on human form. The last of his kind, he longs for companionship. However, his only friend is not only a human female, but a slayer. Sworn to kill all dragons, including him.

Summoned by the village council, Deneas is sent on a quest to kill any and all dragons, and cannot return without proof of her success. Finding the mythical creature and avoiding its deadly talons and fire are not her only problems. Another slayer follows with orders to kill her. As she retraces her slain mother’s footsteps, Deneas learns the world is not what it seems.

Know the Heroine from Fire and Amulet

Here are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

It’s late, she’s bored. What does she do?

She takes her weapons into the garden behind the house. Slow twirls with the staff start her practice routine, which then changes to figure eights. Slowly, then building speed, she’ll go through an intricate series of moves. The physical and mental effort not only tones her muscles and builds strenght, it also return body and soul to a calmer state.

What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?

Impulse buying is not something Deneas would be familiar with. Most things in her world are made by the village residents and obtained by barter or gifting. Any coins she obtains are confiscated by the head slayer. That said, if she had the opportunity to purchase something other than supplies for the trail, she would add sweet baked treats to the pack or some of the green oblong fruit baked into treats or eaten in segments.

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

A tunic that fell below her hips starts her wardrobe. Either short or long pants, depending on what activity she contemplated, is also part of the ensemble. Adding a headcloth completes the usual desert garb for when she goes outside the village wall. Ankle-high eather boots provides protection against the heat of the sand or sharp stones. She made leather sandals to wear around town.

Does she know how to fix things?

Not only did Trelleir impart some of his scholarly knowledge to Deneas, her association with the town blackmiths provided her with skills other than that provided by her survival training. Replacing a wagon wheel or repairing horse tack are among the things she can fix. While it is not in the true definition of fixing something, she is a master at creating fire.

How does she act around children she doesn’t know?

Deneas shows kindness and patience. When she and Trelleir rescued a small child from kidnappers, Deneas worked to reassure the child with a soft tone and kneeling to be at the child’s level. Rest breaks unneeded by the adults were taken to allow the child to rest. In a show of friendship, Deneas made a staff appropriate to the child’s size to use as a walking stick – and as a weapon.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

Used to beginning her day with the dawning, Deneas is mentally alert in the morning. A leonine stretch eases muscles abused by battle or a long night of physical work. Although she has broken her fast with nothing but a bowl of water, a cup of brewed atok leaves does help provide energy for the day.

How does she act around people who don’t know what she is?

Fading into the background and not making herself the center of attention is Deneas’ preferred manner when in a crowd. However, when needed, she will reveal herself as a slayer and take charge of the situation.

How does she handle things when in a “proper” social situation?

Deneas falls back onto habit and the formal responses drilled into her during her slayer training. Even as she stood before the Council of Elders when they sent her out on an impossible quest that was in essence a death sentence, she latched onto her training. Despite the wall of ice around her soul, she uttered the formal response of parting sufficiently well that the elders didn’t criticize her.

    Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

Traders in the caravans that used to pass through Darceth had piercings and tattoos, but not the village residents. Jewelry is a rarity in Deneas’ village. The closest thing she owns is a pair of jeweled hair sticks Trelleir made for her. Little did she know that the red jewels in them were actually dragon tears.

    Carriage or horseback?

Caldar, leader of the Council of Elders of Darceth, was so uncooperative that trader caravans refused to stop by the town. This resulted in there being only a few wagons in the village and no carriages. Only three horses constituted Darceth’s herd and Caldar wouldn’t let a mere slayer have one. Reality made the choice for Deneas. Her preferred transportation would have to be on foot.

Thanks for helping us get to know your heroine!

Why did you write this book?

I’ve always wanted to fly, either in the bright blue sky or the star-filled universe. The daughter of an airline flight engineer, I learned my numbers and letters helping update manuals and reading the instrument panel of an old Constellation. As a child lying in the grass of our New Jersey farm, I would identify airplanes from their silhouette or tail logo and watch clouds drift across the sky. At one time I studied aviation and considered a career as a pilot, so it is not surprising that I’ve written several works that feature creatures who play tag with the clouds. The Dragshi Chronicles feature humans with a twinned dragon soul. Two beings, one human, the other a dragon, able to change forms with each other at will. Fire and Amulet features a dragon who uses his magic to pass for human.

What is your favorite genre to read?

    Fantasy

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Menolly of the Harper Hall Trilogy by Anne McCaffrey

What are you working on at the moment?

At present I’m shifting gears after the release of Fire And Amulet to focus on other forms of writing. For the month of April, my blog featured the A to Z Challenge with each post based on the characters and world of Fire And Amulet.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Two concepts are fighting for dominance at this time. A futuristic scifi and another volume set in the world of Trelleir and Deneas. It may take an executive decision maker (aka a coin) to see which story goes next.

    Introducing Brodie

    Please tell me about yourself.

Age I have lived 30 turns in this volume. However my tale actually begins when I make a brief appearance in Windmaster as a youth

    Gender: Male

Birthplace: A mountain village in Nerelan

    Profession: weaponsmith

    Species (for scifi/fantasy characters): human

    What do you look like?

I have brown eyes that can have an intense gaze when creating a tool for a special friend. My hair is brown, which is usually kept cropped to collar length so that it doesn’t get in the way when I’m working. Long legs that give me a height that is taller than most on the Isle of Mages, except for the archmage and Murdo, who serves as sergeant major for the residents, helps make quick work of the climb to my hilltop forge.

Who is the significant other in your life?

Ahhh. I don’t have a significant other. I am fond of the archmage’s two daughters, but they are not a romantic interest (at least on my part) as I think of them as my own daughters. There is one whom I can envision a life with. However, Kia is the sister to the current Oracle of Givneh… and a mage. A future between Kia and me cannot be as I have no powers.

Please tell us about your education.

My first exploration into learning a craft was as a mercenary. And my first assignment was a failed attempt to kill Lord Dal. Fortunately for me, he spared my life. I studied for a year with the king’s head guard, then spent a cold season at Telarim the Red’s mercenary camp, studying weapons and their use. There my talent for weaponsmithing was realized and I stayed on for two campaigns working with the troop’s weaponsmith before I apprenticed with the top weapon makers in Nerelan. Book learning came later, as did training to develop my natural talents in the arts of sketching, engraving, and working with stones to use in the jewelry and blades I create.

Are any of your skills a source of pride or embarrassment, and if so, which ones and why?

My ability to imbue life into steel is something I am extremely proud of. The weapons I make for the journeyman mages will serve as their tool for the rest of their lives. Even though I don’t know who will select what token for the hilt or what blade, each piece is special and customized for their future owner. Although I haven’t witnessed it myself as I have no powers of my own, those who are summoned to the council fire say the token, hilt, and blade that are meant to go together call out to the mage who will use the dagger to focus their powers. The pieces have been said to emit a beam of light skyward that only the intended future wizard can see.

Do you get by, live comfortably, live extravagantly?

My needs are simple. I have my own cottage on the isle, the freedom to come and go as I please. Those who like growing plants do so for everyone from student to master, mage and villager alike. Meals can be eaten in the communal hall or you can cook for yourself. Most days I take a slab of bread and some sliced meat with me to eat as my mid-day meal while I work. The evening meal is at the village. Murdo is a good cook and an even better baker.

Those who see me out and about on the archmage’s tasks might say I live extravagantly because of the horse I ride and my welcome at the most powerful houses in the land. I will share a secret about Wirake. He is no ordinary horse, but the son of the head stallion of the vale. And instead of selecting a wizard, he chose me, a man with no magic of my own, as his rider.

    What is your family like?

I never knew my parents and those who lived in the mountain village they came from never accepted me. Which is why I signed up with Ruaridh, the head of the mercenary troop serving the false oracle I was hoping to find a family in the brotherhood of fighters. Of course, if I had had a happy childhood, I would never have met the archmage. Dal and Ellspeth became my family, and their daughters mine. While I may not have a family bound by blood, I ended up with one with even stronger ties.

What inner doubt causes you the most difficulty?

That because I don’t have any magic of my own, that one day I will fail Dal and his mate, Ellspeth. The archmage and his lady are my friends. They and their daughters treat me as a member of their family. I would never forgive myself if they fell in battle because I did not train them well enough… or if I failed to protect them.

If you could make any one thing happen, what would it be?

Almost every day since I came to the isle of the wizard’s council and school of magic, I have rued the fact I don’t have the ability to work magic. The other wizards have never treated me less because of it. We are friends… They are my family… I am just not fully one of them.

If I could make one thing happen, it would be for me to hear the summons to the council fire where journeyman mages earn their rank and dagger. For, if I heard the silent summons that would mean I have powers and be worthy of Kia.

Although the author of several local histories, and numerous articles on the topics of American and military history, antiques and collectibles, Henderson’s first love is fiction. Her work in the museum and history fields enables a special insight into creating fantasy worlds. The descendent of a coal-miner’s daughter and an aviation flight engineer, her writing reflects the contrasts of her heritage as well as that of her Gemini sign. Her stories cross genres from historical westerns to science fiction and fantasy. In the world of romantic fantasy, she is the author of the Dragshi Chronicles and The Windmaster Novels. In her books, she invites you to join her on travels through the stars, or among fantasy worlds of the imagination.
