Love Without Reservations: A Grumpy/Sunshine Gay Romance in the Shopping for Love in Cataluma

    Noel

I’ve tracked down my wayward sister to Cataluma, California, and my goal is to drag her back to Canada before she gets in trouble with the American authorities. The problem? She’s gone and fallen in love with some dude and refuses to come home. I need to stick around to talk some sense into her, but there’s only one damned inn in this podunk town and they insist they’re full. I can’t get the handsome innkeeper to make an exception, not even for the few days I’ll need to get Kendra safely headed back across the border.

    Aaron

I love my job as the owner of the quaint Cataluma Inn. I also pride myself in being a peacemaker. When I find squawking siblings arguing about a good friend of mine at our traditional barbecue, I have to step in. Next thing I know, I’m offering to share my one-bedroom apartment with a very attractive Canadian. Oh, and he’s gay too…

Love Without Reservations is s story in the Shopping for Love in Cataluma series. The book is a 38k word small-town gay interracial romance novella with a grumpy Canadian entrepreneur, a sunshine American motorcycle rider, and the love they never saw coming.

Which book is this in the series?

Love Without Reservations is the last book in the multi-author series, Shopping for Love in Cataluma.

How many books do you plan for the series?

As a group of romance authors, we planned for the six books as a complete series.

    How many books are completed?

    All six are now published.

What characters are the main stars in your series?

Each book features a different couple.  The books range from sweet through to steamy.  My book is the only gay romance.

What is the overall theme in this series?

Cataluma is a fictional town in California.  As a group of authors, we tend to write small-town romances.  We have second chance, enemies to lovers, grumpy/sunshine…we’ve tried a bunch of tropes for this series.

Please list the series titles below, in any order you prefer.

Inking the Deal by Roxie Clarke (Sweet Cataluma)
Something of Note by Jeanine Lauren (Sweet Cataluma)
Entangled in Love by Katrina Litwin (Sweet Cataluma)
Book, Line, & Tinker by MaryAnn Clarke (Steamy Cataluma)
High on Love by Gabbi Powell (Steamy Cataluma)
    Love Without Reservations (Steamy Cataluma)

What did you like best about writing this series?

I’ve done several shared world books before.  Writing is such a solitary pursuit that any time I can inject a bit of comradery, I leap at the chance.  I belong to a marketing group where we share tips, tricks, ideas, and are generally super supportive of each other.  I don’t even remember who made the suggestion, but about a year ago we started talking about doing a project together.  Twelve months later, we managed to publish all six books.

What other books (not in this series, have you written?)

Wow, I’ll keep it quick.  For the shared world Single Dads of Gaynor Beach series, I wrote Hugh as well as Anthony.  My third book in the series, Xavier, is coming out in September.  In my own series, Love in Mission City, I’ve written, Ginger Snapping All the Way, Stanley’s Christmas Redemption, Page Against the Machine, and several others including the free short story Marcus’s Cadence.

Gabbi, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We’re excited to find out more about your heroine, but first, tell us about You See Me.

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R!

    Elouise

After a public break-up with my fiancée, I’ve retrenched in Vancouver, British Columbia to lick my wounds and star in a movie. I’m acting as if everything is okay, but then I meet a woman who sees the real me. Dare I take a chance to find real love?

    Kelci

I’ve admired Elouise Hynes from afar for years. She’s recently come out of the closet and was dumped just a short time later. I want to offer comfort, but I’m a make-up artist on her movie crew. Can we really form a lasting bond when she lives in LA and I’m staying in Canada?

Know the Heroine from You See Me

Here are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

It’s late, she’s bored. What does she do?

Elouise is a huge fan of cat and dog videos.  She’s very much a small-town girl and would much rather hang out at home than go out in the big city.

What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?

She might or might not have a bit of a sweet tooth and might, on occasion, indulge in some ice cream.

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

Although the characters she portrays in films often wear dresses, Elouise is very much of the ‘comfort is everything’ motto and she loves her jeans and sweaters.

Does she know how to fix things?

Growing up in rural Newfoundland, Canada, Elouise learned how to build things, fix things, and to knit.  She’s independent and is fiercely proud to stand on her own.

She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

For Elouise, her first disaster was her first lesbian relationship.  She met a woman she loved and finally came out of the closet only to be dumped publicly and humiliated.  After that, she swore off love.

How does she act around children she doesn’t know?

Elouise loves kids.  She’ll happily get down on their level as she helped raise her younger siblings.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

Having grown up in a fishing village in rural Newfoundland, Elouise is accustomed to early hours.  As one of the biggest film actresses in Hollywood, she often has early call times and cheerfully arrives on time, if not early.

    Can she use chopsticks?

Although she’s lived in Los Angeles for years, and eaten at many different restaurants, chopsticks are her kryptonite.

Does she drink coffee? If so, how does she take it? If not, what does she drink instead?

Elouise is a true Canadian – she loves Tim Hortons Double Double coffee (black coffee with two shots of milk and two sugars).

What apps would she have on her phone?

Her fitness app is likely her favorite as she enjoys a sense of accomplishment when she hits her targets.  She also has an apps to order Tim Hortons and Starbucks and, finally, she has an app to listen to her favorite audiobooks – most especially Canadian post-modern literature.

    Android or iPhone?

Elouise loves her iPhone because she can stream old movies on it.

    Earrings or unpierced ears?

Her work requires her to have pierced ears, and she loves the teardrop diamond ones.

    Tattoos or unadorned skin?

Some actresses might have tattoos these days – great makeup is a thing – but Elouise prefers unadorned skin.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

Growing up in a rural small-town, she only had the family car or truck to get her around.  When she first got to LA, she was fine with transit.  These days, though, being so famous, she’s more likely to hail a cab.  She tries to nab electric or hybrid ones as she’s worried about the environment.

    Recycle or toss?

Elouise is an environmentalist all the way.  She’ll go out of her way to find a recycling container and prefers her own refillable water bottle.

Thanks for helping us get to know your heroine!

  • Gay or MM,  Stressing the Hero

Stressing Anthony from Anthony: Single Dads of Gaynor Beach by Gabbi Grey @gabbigrey #RLFblog #MMRomance

What happens when a social worker delivers not one, but two bundles of joy to the unsuspecting sperm donor? Scott Wexler, discovering he has twin nine-month-old babies, needs all the help he can get.

Anthony Rodrigues, Gaynor Beach’s social worker, can’t help but step in to assist in this heartwarming single dad gay romance.

Let’s meet Anthony from Anthony, a gay romance, by Gabbi Grey. Welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here!

Please tell us about your latest book.

    Anthony by Gabbi Grey

    Genre gay romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): steamy

    Anthony

During my seven years as a social worker in Gaynor Beach, California, delivering orphaned twins to their unsuspecting father is the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced. These babies lost their mother and they need a loving parent, but is adorable Scott Wexler up to that challenge? Transferring custody is one thing—walking away is something entirely different, especially with the stress of Christmas bearing down on Scott too.

    Scott

After escaping a miserable childhood, I’ve made a fresh start in California. I’m in charge at the Gaynor Beach Public Library, I love helping people, and I’m feeling like an actual functional human being. Then social worker Anthony Rodrigues shows up on my doorstep with twins I fathered through a sperm donation, and suddenly I’m responsible for two tiny lives. Accepting help from the gorgeous social worker is a no brainer—admitting I want him to stay is going to take a lot more courage.

This 74k word gay romance is a slow burn, mid-angst, instalove with a geeky librarian, a by-the-book social worker, adorable twin-toddler terrors, and a beleaguered cat named Crumpy.

    Stressing Anthony

Every hero has a story. He has a background, a history, and a past. This interview allows us to meet a hero and get to know him better, by focusing on how he handles being relaxed, as well as how he handles stress.

Please tell me about your hero.

    Age: 30
    Gender: Male
    Birthplace: Napa Valley, CA
    Profession: Social Worker
    Ethnicity: Hispanic

What does your hero look like?

Anthony’s tall, dark and handsome. These days he’s sporting a beard in an attempt to look more mature. His hair’s a little long and he likes that. Especially when his partner tugs on it while they’re making love.

Who is the significant other in his life?

Scott Wexler – librarian in Gaynor Beach – and new single dad. Scott’s a ginger with stunning green eyes and a bit of a geeky side. He’s also a little kinky, much to Anthony’s surprise.

    The Hero’s Relaxed Side

This hero is at a party. Considering his story, describe the party.

Anthony’s very dedicated to his work – if he’s going to show up at a party, it’ll be for work – mostly to impress his boss.

How does the hero feel about being this particular party, and what body language is he displaying that gives it away?

He’s relaxed and vigilant at the same time. He wants to make a good impression on those around him – image is everything.

Is he more likely to mingle or remain aloof?

He’ll mingle with his co-workers and try to engage his boss in a conversation.

f he drinks, what is his drink of choice at this party?

He’ll have a beer, if alcohol is being served.

How much drink is his usual?

One beer is his absolute limit. He’s dealt with an addict in his past and he’ll never let himself lost control.

The hero figures out where the hiding places are and then goes there. Is it to hide, to avoid someone, or to go drag a friend back to the party?

He’ll likely need a break away from the stress of having to make a good impression. He puts up a good façade, but it’s a little tiring.

Is he likely to latch onto a friend and stay with him/her and ignore others, or is he the friend that others latch onto?

If he were at a party with some other gay men, he’d latch on to a friend and stay with them. He’s very loyal.

If someone picked a fight at this party, how is the hero going to handle it?

He’s the intervener – he’ll do everything in his power to stop the fight before it escalates. And if he has to pick sides, he’ll pick the weaker person. He always stands up for the little guy.

Is the hero the one most likely to get tossed out of the party, or the one who does the tossing?

He’d do the tossing – he has no patience for people who overindulge.

Will he know when to leave, or stay late and make a nuisance of himself?

He’ll know when to leave. Being around his co-workers might be awkward, but he can judge the perfect moment to make his exit.

    The Hero’s Stressed Out Side

How does the hero handle it if the cops or some other authority figure pulls him aside when he was blameless in a situation?

He’ll remain calm. He knows racial profiling is a thing, and he’ll be worried. But he’ll do everything he’s told and hope things are sorted out later. He’s innocent. He’ll hold tight to that.

How does the hero react to hearing a scream?

He runs toward those in needs – even if it comes at his peril.

If he sees someone being assaulted, what is the FIRST thing that crosses his mind?

How can I intervene? If there’s a weapon, he might stop to call the cops.

If he sees someone being assaulted, what is the FIRST thing he does?

Jumps in. He knows he’s mortal, but he’s not going to stand by and watch someone get hurt. He’ll put his own life on the line if it means he can save someone else.

This hero attempts to rescue someone and realizes that he is in over his head. The odds are against him and there is no way out. He is going to get his butt handed to him. What does he do?

Keeps going. He’s found himself in over his head a few times and has always come out on top, so he’ll stick firm to the belief he can do it again. Even if he goes down in defeat, he’ll be able to cling to the fact he tried.

The hero runs into the one person from his past he wanted to avoid. He can’t get out of the situation and must interact in some way. What does he do?

Funny, this exact thing happens to him. He doesn’t want the confrontation, but he also understands it has to happen. In the end, though, he protects those in his life who he loves the most.

Someone younger than the hero is in charge of the situation, and they are handling it badly, perhaps bungling things. How does the hero deal with it?

He’s faced this exact situation. He brings the twins to Scott – who’s a few years younger – and it’s soon clear that Scott’s not coping well. Anthony doesn’t hesitate – he steps in to offer a hand without being controlling. Oh, and he falls in love in the process.

The hero is in physical pain but must bear up under it and keep going. What does he tell himself in order to get through the situation?

You’ve borne unbearable emotional grief and anguish. You lost everyone who meant something to you. You can endure this physical pain because there’s something better on the other side.

What mentor’s words come to mind in a bad situation?

A high school guidance counsellor brought him back from the abyss and helped him get into college. You’re stronger than you think will always be his mantra.

What lesson from his past gets him through a stressful situation?

Tremendous personal losses have been his guiding principle – he ensures the helpless children in his community are cared for. The desire to keep doing that is enough to see him through even the darkest situations.

What one thing would you like readers to know about your hero?

He was a bit of a jerk in my book, Hugh, another book in the Single Dads of Gaynor Beach series. Yet even as I wrote him back then, I knew he had reasons for being the way he was and I also knew – without a shadow of a doubt – that I had to write his redemptive arc. I hope readers will feel I’ve done that.

Thank you, Kayelle, for letting me share a glimpse into Anthony. I really appreciate you letting me visit.

    Genre Gay romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Why did you write this book?

I am launching a new indie series in the fall and I wanted to write some short stories as teasers for secondary characters who will appear. They’re short, quick, and fun reads.

What is your favorite genre to read?

I admit to reading romance. Tons of romance mostly gay or contemporary with the odd historical thrown in.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Claire Randall Fraser from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander. At first, she went back in time because of the stones. She came back to the 1950s and then, twenty years later, voluntarily went back to the eighteenth century. No toilet paper, no electricity, no running water. That Jamie Fraser guy must’ve been pretty special.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am working on a gay romance releasing in July Hugh which is part of the Single Dads of Gaynor Beach series.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

I have several more gay romances in the offing. The indie series I’m launching in the fall (where Ace, Derek, and some of my other characters will make an appearance) is under the pen name Gabbi Powell and will be mostly m/f romances. All these books are set in my fictional world of Mission City, British Columbia.

    Justin

I’m a therapist who helps people deal with grief. My life is fulfilling. So what if I’ve been single for years? I have the kids I counsel and co-workers I adore. Maybe I’m tired of going home to an empty house and not looking forward to another Christmas alone. But I’m not going to be taken in by some slick city guy who can’t wait to leave town. I’m not going to upend my life just because I’ve met the man of my dreams. Right?

This is an 85k opposites-attract instalove mid-angst gay romance novel. Previously published in the charity anthology Secret Santa: A Romance Collection, the story has quadrupled in size with more love, laughs, and a touch of Christmas magic.

Know the Hero from Stanley’s Christmas Redemption

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero – Stanley Powers.

It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

Well, I certainly don’t watch Christmas movies or anything so frivolous. I’ll spend my time scouting out companies looking who need additional funding. Or check my portfolio. Until I’m thrust into the role of guardian and am suddenly responsible for my orphaned eight-year-old nephew. Then it’s kid’s movies with him, and scouring parenting websites once he’s gone to bed. Oh, and maybe making out with the kid’s sexy counselor.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

Pizza. Oh my God, pizza. Especially from that little store around the corner.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

My preference? T-shirt and jeans. I do love me some casual. For business? Suits all the way – have to demonstrate how successful I am, even if I don’t always feel that way.

Does he know how to fix things?

I used to live in a cabin in the woods with my ex-boyfriend while we built our dream house. Fixing things is easy for me. So’s cooking. Baking? Not so much. Fixing broken and damaged kids? Not in my wheelhouse. But sometimes we don’t have a say in how our lives will change in an instant.

He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

I tried a permanent relationship with a man I loved. I thought I was up to the task, and that we were going to be together forever. But when he wanted to adopt, or find a surrogate, or become a foster parent, I panicked. I didn’t see myself giving up my carefree lifestyle to care for a little thing that would demand so much attention. And I thought I got away scot-free. Until karma caught up with me. So can I do a relationship now? Or am I still the selfish SOB everyone thinks I am?

How does he act around children he doesn’t know?

Children? I don’t do children. Not a thing. Unless my half-brother dies and leaves me guardian to his beloved son. Suddenly I have to step up. Am I up for the task?

What is he like first thing in the morning?

I’m a jump-out-of-bed fully awake and ready to start my day. Good thing now I’m facing being responsible for another human being. A little one who depends on me.

    Can he use chopsticks?

I’m urbane and love multicultural food, so I’m proficient at chopsticks.

Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?

I drink black coffee. Unless I’m super nervous and trying to buy time – then I request low-fat milk and artificial sweetener.

What apps would he have on his phone?

Apps? Anything to do with business. And health. After turning forty-five, I took a good look in the mirror and decided to take my health seriously. Even former friends who are mad at me have noticed I’m fitter than I’ve been for a long time.

    Android or iPhone?

iPhone because I’m on call with my business all the time. And it’s great when I need to lend the phone to a certain sexy counselor who needs to make a video call with his parents at Christmas.

    Beard or clean-shaven?

Clean-shaven. I’m a high-powered executive, and it’s expected of a successful entrepreneur such as myself.

    Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

    A tattoo? Never. Absolutely.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

I love my little sports car – it’s great for getting around downtown Vancouver. Except when I face becoming a family man and suddenly, I’m considering getting a hybrid SUV.

    Recycle or toss?

Despite appearing as someone disinterested in environmental issues, I’m very focused on keeping the earth as pristine as possible. I’m a recycle all the way kind of guy.
