Can love be the ingredient needed to survive the many obstacles they face?
Why did you write this book?
Since contracting the measles when I was 7 years old, I’ve been hearing impaired.
If I’m in a place with a lot of background noise, everything becomes “buzzing”. I tend to back off and isolate myself in large groups, not understanding what they are saying. If the noise isn’t too bad, I can lip-read to an extent.
My family and friends have gotten used to me and my “positioning”. Going out with friends for dinner, I pick either end of the table on the opposite side, so my good ear is toward the group. Walking down the street often breaks out into a dance of me and whoever shuffling positions. I prefer to drive, so everyone is on my right.
One time I went to the doctor because my right ear was bothering me. Trust me, when one doesn’t work, you are on it when something starts up with the other. Unfortunately, when he tried to remove the problem (TMI alert), earwax further pushed down, and I became almost totally deaf. It was a Friday, and the ENT couldn’t see me until Monday. One of my worst fears happened. The entire world was shut out. Monday came, and the problem was resolved, but the experience still haunts me.
I think that’s why I avoided audiobooks. If I have a bud in my left ear, the world is shut out. It’s not true, but it was my perception.
In the past few years, our life began to have many changes. Before with my hubby and I working full-time, travel was limited. But after we bought our camper, as my sister says, the world became our oyster. Traveling for hours, sometimes for several days, left a lot of downtimes. So, why not. I was in a safe environment. Pete usually drives, and if anyone knows him, he has a booming voice, so no problem hearing him. I went out and bought a set of comfortable earbuds.
Since then, I’ve been hooked, and it followed that Rock House Grill would be my first audiobook. Hearing Shay and Aden’s story brought to life by the incredible Emelie Pla brought tears to my eyes.
I don’t wear headphones when I’m driving. I will confess when I’m taking a walk and “vant to be alone”, I’ll put both in even though the left ear one isn’t needed; I tend to be left alone. Shh, don’t tell on me.
If you love audiobooks or have hesitated to try one, go for it!
What is your favorite genre to read?
I read so many different, but I have to say Fantasy/Romance is my favorite–today anyway. But I like all my books to have a happy resolution.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Bilbo Baggins. He’s funny, sweet, and faulty at times. But loyalty is huge.
What are you working on at the moment?
I have several projects in the works. The Sheild-Mates series are fantasy/romance. The one giving me fits at the moment is The Last Dragon Queen, which I’m concurrently finishing alongside Kisa.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
Jazz House, the second book of my Impact series by Wild Rose Press, should be coming soon. Also, the Shield-Mates, which are indie, will be sorted out and released.

QUICK
Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
Yes, I also write fantasy and mid-grade. Rock House as a contemporary is new to me. I’ve always considered myself a fantasy/paranormal writer.
How do you come up with ideas?…
Usually an image or lyric spark an idea. One of my fantasy works in progress was inspired by Helm’s Deep in Lord of the Rings. One scene Aragorn and Haldir hugged after a hesitation by the elf. The look on his face became my character for Kíeran in Aimhirghin Kingdom at a Crossroad.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
Getting the point across that matter what happens, there’s always hope. It may not be what you had in mind. For example Aden House wanted his restaurant, television show, and to take care of his sister. But choices he made nearly destroyed all of them.
When did you write your first book?…
I had been laid-off from work back in 2009. I struggled with circumstancial depression at the time. Like Aden, I had choices to make. After pulling myself off the couch I decided to follow my dream.
FUN
Leather or lace? Leather
Black or red? Black
Satin sheets or smooth cotton? cotton
Ocean or mountains? Ocean
City life or country life? Country
Party life or evening at home? Evening at home
Dogs or cats? Dog. I have a cat too but couldn’t imagine my life dog-less. Hali is my latest in a long line of rescues.

Born in Brooklyn, D.V. Stone has moved around a bit and even lived for a time on a dairy farm in Minnesota before moving back east. Throughout her wandering, she always considered herself a Jersey Girl. She met and married the love of her life, Pete–a lifelong Jersey Man, and moved this time to Sussex County. They adopted Hali, a mixed breed from the local shelter, who is still working things out with their cat Baby.
DV’s career path varied from working with the disabled to become a volunteer EMT, which in turn led to working in hospital emergency rooms and then in a women’s state prison. After a few years, she took a break from medicine and became the owner of Heavenly Brew, a specialty coffee shop in Sparta NJ, and a small restaurant in Lafayette. Life handed some setbacks, and she ended up back in the medical field, but this time in a veterinary emergency hospital.
During the poor economy, she was laid–off from a long-time position she cared about. Devastated, DV wondered what to do with her life. Finding comfort in her love of reading, she realized it was now time to follow her dream of writing. It’s been a long road but worth every minute of it. Now a published author, she also works in a people medical office again.
“Thank you for taking the time to read about me. Each time you open the pages to one of my books, I hope you’ll be swept away by the story and find encouragement in your own life, never to give up on hope.”
