The war is over. The battle for love has just begun.

and despair in the Pacific. Relieved to put the horrors of war behind him, Jim went
home to his apple orchard and a quiet life with his wife and children. Knowing Jim
could never return his forbidden feelings, Cal hoped time and an ocean between them
would dull the yearning for his best friend.
But when Jim’s wife dies, Cal returns to help. He doesn’t know
a thing about apple farming—or children—but he’s determined to be there for Jim,
even as the painful torch he carries blazes back to life. Jim is grateful for his
friend’s support as he struggles with buried emotions and dark wartime memories.
Then Jim begins to see Cal in a new light, and their relationship deepens in ways

    About the Character

    Name: Cal Cunningham
    Age: 29
    Gender: Male
    Birthplace: New York City
Profession: Former banker and newbie apple farmer
    Ethnicity/Species (if not human): Caucasian
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include
any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars: Around 6 feet, 200 lbs.
Lean and muscular. Dark eyes and dark, thick hair. Dimples.
    Who is the significant
    other in your character’s life?
Best friend Jim Bennett is definitely Cal’s significant other,
but their relationship has always been platonic, much to Cal’s anguish.
    How does your hero dress?
He’s in a WWII Marine uniform in the flashbacks to the war, and
at the orchard he wears jeans or khakis with button-front work shirts or T-shirts.
    How educated is this character?
Is he book smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?
Cal is a Princeton grad, and is very intelligent. He could have
easily had an officer’s commission in the war, but joined the Marines to rebel against
    his father.
    Does he scrape by, live
    comfortably, live extravagantly?
He’s very wealthy, but is content living a simple life at the
    orchard with Jim.
    What special skills does
    your character rely on?
Probably his people skills. Cal’s charismatic and funny, and
    is a smooth talker.
    What is your character’s
    family like?
Oy vey. His parents are rather cold, and he isn’t close to his
    much-younger sister. He’s clashed with his father—and his father’s expectations—his
    whole life.
    Does he have children?
No, and when Cal moves to the orchard to help Jim, he has no
experience dealing with children. Eight-year-old Sophie isn’t as easily charmed
by Cal as most people, and he has to learn how to deal with the complexity of kids.
Can your hero keep a secret?
If not, why not? If yes, why?
Definitely! He’s kept his deep love and attraction for Jim secret
since their days at boot camp.

Character Sketch: Isaac from A Forbidden Rumspringa @keiraandrews #RLFblog #LGBT

    A Forbidden Rumspringa

    About the Book

    Title: A Forbidden Rumspringa
    Genre: M/M contemporary
    Author: Keira Andrews
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
When two young Amish men find love, will they risk losing everything?
In a world where every detail of life—down to the width of a
hat brim—is dictated by God and the all-powerful rules of the community, two men
dare to imagine a different way. At 18, Isaac Byler knows little outside the strict
Amish settlement of Zebulon, Minnesota, where there is no rumspringa for exploration
beyond the boundaries of their insular world. Isaac knows he’ll have to officially
join the church and find a wife before too long, but he yearns for something else—something
    he can’t name.
Dark tragedy has left carpenter David Lantz alone to support
his mother and sisters, and he can’t put off joining the church any longer. But
when he takes on Isaac as an apprentice, their attraction grows amid the sweat and
sawdust. David shares his sinful secrets, and he and Isaac struggle to reconcile
their shocking desires with their commitment to faith, family and community.
Now that they’ve found each other, are they willing to lose it
    all?

    About the Character

    Name: Isaac Byler
    Age: 18
    Gender: Male
    Birthplace: Red Hills, Ohio
    Profession: Apprentice carpenter
    Ethnicity/Species (if not human): n/a
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include
any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars: Caucasian, slim and just
under six feet tall. Isaac has sandy hair and amber eyes, as well as freckles across
    his nose.
Who is the significant other in your character’s life? David
Lantz, a 22-year-old mysterious carpenter Isaac is going to work with.
    How does your hero dress?
In a very regimented way! As a Swartzentruber Amish man, Isaac’s
clothes are very strictly governed by the rules of his community. The brim of his
hat (straw in the summer and black felt in the winter and for church) must be exactly
four inches wide, and the band five-eighths of an inch. No more, and no less. He
can’t wear bright colors, and dresses in simple fabrics in black, navy, brown and
gray. There are three hooks at the top of his shirts, and two buttons to do up the
flap over the fly of his trousers. He doesn’t wear underwear and wouldn’t know a
boxer brief from a hole in the ground.
    If you could only hear
this character’s voice (but not see him) what characteristic would identify him?
When Isaac’s nervous (which happens a lot around David) he laughs,
and according to him he sounds like a braying donkey.
    How educated is this character?
Is he book smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?
Like almost all Amish, Isaac only went to school through eighth
grade. In a one-room Amish schoolhouse, one of the young unmarried women taught
him basic math and how to read, write and speak English. He learned a tiny bit of
science (Creationist-compliant only, of course), and some Amish history. He knows
very little about the world outside his small community.
What does he have a knack
    for doing?
Isaac’s always had a knack for woodworking. He’s not keen on
farming, so his father has arranged for Isaac to apprentice with the best carpenter
in Zebulon—David Lantz. David puts Isaac on edge for some reason he can’t figure
out. Maybe it’s the way David looked at him that day at the barn raising like he
was seeing right into the most secret part of him…
    Is your character involved
    in his community?
Absolutely. Isaac’s life revolves around his family and his community.
God and the community are everything to the Amish. It’s the only way of life Isaac’s
    ever known.
    Does this character see
morality as black-and-white, or with shades of gray?
He sees it as black and white, but as he comes to terms with
his sexuality, he begins to see more shades of gray. Reconciling his homosexuality
with the Amish rules of morality is not easy to do, to say the least.
Can your hero keep a secret?
If not, why not? If yes, why?
He can—out of necessity. If Isaac told the truth about who he
really was and what he felt for David, he would be an outcast in his community,
and his family would be devastated.
    What inner doubt causes
    your character the most difficulty?
Now that Isaac’s 18, the pressure is building for him to officially
be baptized and join the Amish church—after which he’ll naturally get married to
one of the local girls. But Isaac isn’t sure the plain life is what he truly wants.
When he tries to imagine his future as a good Amish man with a wife, he can’t seem
to. This doubt that he wants to remain Amish only intensifies as he gets to know
    David and their connection grows.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

    Why do you think your
writer chose to write about you?
Because there are hardly any books out there about gay Amish
people, and we have a lot of stories to tell.
    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
*blushes* I wish she hadn’t told them about how much I like being
    intimate with David!
    Was there anything your
writer discovered about you that was a surprise to one or both of you?
*blushes again* It was a surprise just how flexible I can be
when David and I are…you know.
    What do you wish your
    writer would write next?
I wish she’d write about what happens to me and David next. Lucky
for me that’s what she’s working on!

    About the Character

    Name: Kyle
    Age: 22
    Gender: Male
Birthplace: Somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean
    Profession: Bodyguard
    Ethnicity/Species (if not human): Merman
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include
any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars:
Kyle is quite pale since he spends the majority of his time under
the water and away from the rays of the sun. He has brown hair which is cropped
short. He has found having long hair tends to get in the way when you live underwater.
His eyes are a silvery blue and an exact match in colour to his tail and fins. The
constant swimming has given him excellent upper body strength. From the waist up
he has a typical swimmer’s build. On land he is fully human and stands a little
under six feet tall, not that measurements mean much in the ocean.
Who is the significant other in your character’s life?
Kyle is torn between two different men. Prince Finn, heir to
the throne of the sunken city of Atlantis, is a merman like Kyle and Jake Seabrook
is a human living in England.
    How does your hero dress?
Naked is the preferred mode of dress
for Kyle, though he is learning that being out and about in England does require
him to be covered up to a certain extent. He dresses under protest.
What is your character’s viewpoint on wealth? Not necessary,
nice to have, important, obtain at all costs?
Kyle has very little concept of money
since it isn’t used under the ocean. On land he is actually very wealthy, although
he didn’t realize it at first. The longer he stays on land, the more he will have
to get used to things like money, but thankfully for him the funds he has are enough
that he can live comfortably for the rest of his life, even if he never does learn
the value of money. I think he will because he’s a pretty fast learner.
    Is he close to family?
Kyle looks up to his father and hope
to follow in his footsteps as the leader of the clan. He is close to his mother
and keeps a watchful eye over his younger sister. Making the right choices for his
family is of paramount consideration for Kyle, even at the cost of his own happiness.
If someone from your character’s past showed up, who would he
most want it to be, and why?
Kyle would most like to see his mother,
Maurissa. The oceans are dangerous places and although he understands her decision
to swim away from the safety of Atlantis, he would like to know she is well.
Can your hero keep a secret? If not, why not? If yes, why?
Kyle isn’t generally a secretive person,
but there is one secret which he can keep very well, that of being a merman. Of
course there are sometimes circumstances where his secret is revealed because Kyle
is the sort of person who will do the right thing even if it means revealing what
    he is.
What is your character’s biggest need at the beginning of the
    story?
After a devastating shark attack on
his nomadic community Kyle’s biggest need becomes finding a safe haven for his people.
Even if it means giving up any chance of love.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
I wish she hadn’t told everyone I’m a merman, but thankfully
she has done it in a way that it makes me appear as only a character in a work of
    fiction.
    Was there anything your
writer discovered about you that was a surprise to one or both of you?
My writer expected me to sit around pining over Finn when he
broke my heart. She definitely didn’t expect me to fall for someone else.
    What do you wish your
    writer would write next?
I want her to write my first lover, Dax’s story. Although we
parted on good terms I want to know that he is well and has found someone to love.
Unfortunately she tells me that although she is keeping tabs on Dax, his story isn’t
    the next one.
    What other character from
your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
Although he scares me by what he can do, I would like to know
more about Caspian. I’m just not sure he is the type to get all loved up with someone
like the rest of us. He’s not exactly sociable.
    Is there anything you’d
like to say to your writer?
I know my story isn’t over yet, but could you at least give me
a hint about what is to come?

    About the Character

    Name: Jamie Charles
    Age: 31
    Gender: Female
    Birthplace: Cleveland,
    Ohio
    Profession: Artist/Bartender
    Ethnicity: Caucasian
Describe her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include
any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars: Jamie is average height
with a curvy, well-toned body. Jamie has a nose piercing, tattoos and fair skin.
At the beginning of the story her hair is long and black and she favors dramatic
eyes shadow and lipstick. Later in the book she changes her style a bit.
    Who is the significant
    other in your character’s life?
Miles Copeland. He’s dreamy, handsome, speaks his mind and it
quite persistent. He isn’t afraid of Jamie’s tough, scarred exterior and he’s determined
to win her heart. Thankfully, he succeeds.
    How does your heroine
    dress?
In the beginning of the book, Jamie favors a darker, edgier look.
I’d describe it as Goth Girl Meets Motorcycle Chick. It fits her mood and the image
she wants to project to the world. She relishes the fact that people find her unapproachable.
    How educated is this character?
Is she book smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?
Jamie is a smart girl but she is self-taught and street smart.
She is capable of much more, but deep down she holds the belief that she doesn’t
    deserve more.
Does she scrape by, live comfortably, live extravagantly?
Jamie is your typical starving artist,
in many ways, but she’s comfortable with her life as it is. However, when she starts
dating Miles she becomes more aware of what she doesn’t have. The difference in
their income levels does add to her insecurities.
What does she have a knack
    for doing?
Jamie is a talented artist. She’s especially skilled at drawing
and painting. When she was ten-years-old, the man who Jamie considers to be her
father bought her art supplies after she got in trouble for drawing on a desk at
    school.
    What is your character’s
    family like?
Jamie comes from a broken home and had a very difficult childhood.
Her father left home when she was about ten. Her mother was an alcoholic and drug
addict. Jamie had planned to run away from home at thirteen, but her best friend’s
family took her in and became her legal guardians. She loves them and is fiercely
loyal to them. Yet, she trusts few other people.
    Is she close to family?
Jamie is very close to her adopted
family. However, she hasn’t seen her biological father since she was ten and hasn’t
seen her biological mother in more than fifteen years.
    If someone from your character’s
past showed up, who would she NOT want it to be, and why?
The last person in the world that Jamie
would want to see is her biological mother, Josephine Charles. Yet, near the outset
of the story, that is exactly what happens. Josephine is trying to get her life
together and wants to make amends with Jamie. This sets off a series of events in
which Jamie is forced to deal with extremely painful secrets from her past that
neither she nor Josephine are truly prepared to face.
    Can your heroine keep
    a secret?
Yes. Jamie has kept lots of secrets for the two women she considers
her sisters. However, the biggest secret she’s been keeping is about what happened
to her as a young girl. It’s slowly been eating away at her, like a poison, and
making it difficult for her to form a true connection with or trust people outside
    of her small circle.
    What inner doubt causes
    your character the most difficulty?
Being abandoned by her father without so much as a word and watching
her mother choose the man who hurt her over her has left Jamie with the belief that
she is unlovable. She behaves accordingly and avoids relationships at all costs.
Until she met Miles, she was content to live her life this way. Being loved by him
slowly changes her perspective on the matter and her self-perception.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

    Why do you think your
writer chose to write about you?
I was a minor character in her debut novel, Making the First
Move, but we really hit it off. To be honest, she was sort of fascinated with me.
She needed to understand what made me tick and to see it all play out. I think she
was also a little taken with Miles and wanted to go back and write our love story
as her way of secretly getting to spend some alone time with him.
    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
There are lots of things in my past that are painful and that
I’m not especially proud of. Reese put it all out there. Honestly, I didn’t appreciate
it initially. Yet, if she hadn’t I’d never have been able to truly love Miles. So
I thank her for that. I also hope my story gives hope to other women who might be
suffering from insecurity, self-loathing and self-doubt in the wake of a sexual
    assault.
    Was there anything your
writer discovered about you that was a surprise to one or both of you?
Learning the truth regarding my deeply-held beliefs about myself
came as a surprise to me. I go on quite a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance
in this story. However, I think Reese was just as surprised by the reasons behind
some of my bad choices. This book was a collaboration between the two of us. I’m
pretty sure my name should be listed as fictional co-author.
    What other character from
your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
There are three other characters in my story who also deserve
their own happy endings: my friend, Lisa who works with me; Miles’s little sister,
Kari; and my other childhood friend, Xavier Hunt. There are some very emotional
scenes between Ex and me in this story. Ex deserves to find a woman who will love
him the way he deserves. Several readers have requested his story, so I hope Reese
is sitting in her chair, plotting his story out right now.

You’ll often find Chayton in a pair of ripped up jeans and a
    button-down shirt, or a raunchy t-shirt
    What are the qualities
of his voice? (pitch, quality, volume)
Deep; has been labeled as a raspy roar or “soft and sweet
    with a crust of thorns”
What does he have a knack
    for doing?
Chayton can make a mean drink, but he loves to be outside, on
the slopes, and he makes everyone feel welcome (well, everyone except Naomi).
    What is your character’s
    family like?
Chayton’s brother, Garret, is a former special agent and recently

He would not want it to be his birth mother, because she gave
him up when he was eighteen months and he has no use for her.

    your character the most difficulty?
    The fear of abandonment.
    What past event causes
    your character the most fear?
    Being abandoned.
    What is your hero’s biggest
    personal flaw?
His hostility toward Naomi. One of the most calm and relaxed
people yet shocks others when he flares up for reasons beyond comprehension. He’s
not too opinionated but hates his opinion to be challenged.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

    Why do you think your
writer chose to write about you?
Well hell, probably because I’m irresistible.
    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
    Shrugs. It’s all under
    the bridge now.
    Was there anything your
writer discovered about you that was a surprise to one or both of you?
Yeah. My sister was a surprise to us both.
    When your writer is writing
about you, what do you think makes your writer the most happy? What makes your writer
    the most sad?
I know she gets sad when I go silent.
    Why do you think your
    writer loves to write?
Because she gets to write about characters like me.
    Is there anything you’d
like to say to your writer?
Uh, thanks for telling my story. And thanks for helping me not
to get my ass killed when I made some stupid decisions.

    Author Bio

    Angela Smith
During her senior year in high school, Angela Smith was dubbed
most likely to write a novel, and that has been her dream ever since her mother
read Brer Rabbit to her and her sister so often that they were able to recite it
back to each other before actually learning to read. She’s always enjoyed stories
about the adventure of love, and getting involved in the legal field developed her
love of suspense. A certified paralegal, work gives her perfect fodder for her romantic
suspense stories. When not caring for her small farm or spending time with her husband
of two decades, she enjoys creating, reading, and dreaming of the places she’ll
    visit one day.
