Teacher's Pet by Kayla Drake @KaylaDrakeBooks #RLFblog #ContemporaryRomanceKayla Drake author of Teacher’s Pet answers five easy questions.

Please tell us about yourself.
Although she’s an enthusiastic traveler, Kayla Drake has spent most of her days right where she was born, in Chicago. When Kayla decided to write romance novels, she knew the stories had to feature her favorite places in this beautiful city by the lake. Whether her couples visit the sculptures or the zoo, the sports arenas or the shopping districts, romance always grows in the “City of Big Shoulders.”
What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?
Soup with a thick wedge of homemade bread to dunk in the bowl. I could eat that every day! There’s always a pot of homemade soup in my kitchen. My current bubbling pot is filled with curried lentils, kale, and carrots – so yummy!
What’s your favorite hashtag to watch on Twitter?
#knitting – I’m addicted to knitting and love seeing what everyone makes! My favorite things to knit are sweaters and socks. Hand-knit socks are one of life’s true luxuries.
Describe the perfect vacation.
I spend most of it outdoors, and it’s warm. Those are the key ingredients to a happy adventure! I’m not a “lay on the beach” kind of vacationer – I prefer to be active and explore everything from museums to mountains.
Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.
My bike! I could ride for hours, and I still love riding to this day. My favorite bike as a kid was pink and white with long pink streamers on the handlebars. So girly! But as soon as I swung my leg over that seat, I had freedom and wind in my hair, and who doesn’t love that?
If the hero of your latest book called you on the phone, what would be a perfect ringtone for him?
Nothing too jazzy! Dennis is precise, detail-oriented, and driven. Something short and clear would work best for him.
Please tell us about your latest book.

Memo to Miss Turner:
Audrey Turner owns Miss Turner’s School, a top-tier preschool in the posh Lincoln Park neighborhood. Her students are the children of some of Chicago’s most successful doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs, and these parents expect nothing short of the best.
No parent is more demanding than wealthy investment banker Dennis Delaney. Every day, Audrey receives a morning memo from him containing precise instructions for his son Cole’s care. No detail is too insignificant to escape this single father’s notice. When Dennis finds himself coping with a short-term summer childcare issue, Audrey agrees to be his temporary nanny. It’s a chance for a close view of their lifestyle, and if she can keep Dennis Delaney happy, then all the other parents should be content, too.
It’s only two weeks. Two weeks of daily contact with Chicago’s most meticulous parent – and its most eligible bachelor. Two maddening weeks of rigorously high standards and sizzling sex appeal. Audrey can handle anything for two weeks, right?

NJ Walters, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. I’d like to get to know you better. After we talk, I’ll ask for your bio and social media. Let’s jump in to a Quick and Fun answer session.

QUICK

Wolf in her Soul by your NJ Walters @njwaltersauthor #RLFblog #PNRDo you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?
I write romance, but within that genre, I’ve written paranormal, sci-fi/fantasy, and contemporary. Romance is such an open and diverse genre that allows me to explore pretty much anything I want. I love it.
How do you come up with ideas?
Ideas come from everywhere—an overhear snippet of conversation, an online quiz, a magazine article, a television show. Many times the ideas come not from one source but a combination of several.
The idea for my Hades’ Carnival series came from an online quiz about which carnival ride I was most like (a carousel). I started wondering about carousel animals and asking what if questions. What if they were really immoral warriors trapped by a curse? What if there was a special woman who could set them free? That idea became a seven book series.
My Salvation Pack series came from a random thought. What if five men separated from their pack and started their own? Why would they leave? What would be the consequences of their actions?
The possibilities are limitless.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?
Just doing it. I’m a pantser and not a plotter so I love to watch my characters’ stories come to life. I love creating worlds and stories. It’s such a gift. I’ve always said I feel as though I’m just taking dictation. All I have to do is show up and let my characters do all the work.
When did you write your first book?
I wrote my first book back in 1995. I’d always been a huge reader and decided one day that I could write a book. I wrote two actually, tried to find a home for them, and failed. I did get some great feedback from some wonderful editors who took the time to point out some problems with my writing technique. I put the stories away and forgot about writing until late 2003 when I started another book in response to an online contest. I didn’t place in the contest, but the book Annabelle Lee (recently rereleased as Uncovering Annabelle) was published in 2004. And the first two books I wrote—Discovering Dani and The Way Home—were eventually published as well.

FUN

Leather or lace? lace
Black or red? black

Tell us about Wolf in her Soul
Detective Reece Gallagher has spent the last decade working as a cop in Chicago so he can search for her—the red-haired woman who haunts his dreams. He’s just about ready to give up and go home to Salvation, North Carolina, when he finally finds her. But she’s the assault victim on a case he’s working on, and there’s a full-blooded werewolf who wants her dead. He needs to keep her safe and convince her she’s his mate.
Hannah Burdette has a secret she’s never told anyone. But there is someone who knows who—or rather, what—she is. There’s a stalker after her who plans to rid the world of her “impure” blood. When the cop she meets turns out to be a werewolf and claims she doesn’t have to be alone anymore, she’s wary. But where better to hide from a bloodthirsty hunter than in the middle of North Carolina with the security of a pack surrounding her?

Welcome Milou Koenings, author of The Gift of Yesterday, a new sweet romance in the Sweet Christmas Kisses 4 collection.

Why did you write this book?
The Gift of Yesterday, my contribution to Sweet Christmas Kisses 4, 14-novella box set, is the fifth in the Green Pines Romance series. The hero appears in several of the previous books, and he is such a great guy, he certainly deserved a romance of his own.
What is your favorite genre to read?
Romance, of course. I need those happy endings!
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Lately, I’ve found myself fascinated by Johnny Tremain. It’s a classic we had to read in fourth grade, but I always loved the book. It’s fascinating to me how reading the same book at different stages in life can be such a different experience each time.
What are you working on at the moment?
The sixth book in the Green Pines series and another book that’s more in the women’s fiction/chick lit genre.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
Right now I’m focusing on the launch of Sweet Christmas Kisses 4, and then in November, I’ll be releasing The Gift of Yesterday as a stand-alone novella, independent of the box set.
Please tell us about your latest book.

Today’s featured book is The French Duchess, a regency era romance by Rue Allyn. In this rollicking Regency novel, a breathless chase through England and France to stop an assassination attempt on Napoleon leads to love.

An Extraordinary Duchess

A non-royal duchess is a rare bird—even more so, an English non-royal duchess. According to Jane Dinsmore “Only twenty-four English dukes exist now.” (https://www.thehistoryvault.co.uk/an-endangered-species-britains-non-royal-duchesses/). Donna Hatch maintains that “no more than forty dukes ever existed,” in England. (http://donnahatch.com/dukes-and-duchesses-in-regency-england/). Due to English laws of primogeniture most of the duchesses associated with those duchies gained their titles by marriage, not inheritance. Dinsmore, in her book Duchesses: Living in 21st Century Britain, discusses only one, “Anne, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton, who inherited the title aged 19, during the turbulence of the Civil War.” History records other duchesses suo jure (in their own right). For example, Eliot Warburton in his Memoirs of Horace Walpole and his contemporaries (Vol. 1, London, 1852 p. 130) states that one of George I’s mistresses was “allowed to assume the style and dignity of the Duchess of Kendal.” Warburton describes the dismay and uproar caused among the peerage at the raising of a German mistress to the highest of non-royal titles. As uncommon as it was for a woman to acquire or inherit the title of Duchess in her own right, it did happen. However, the rarity of such events made them far from ordinary.

An ordinary (if you can apply the term to forty or less women at any given time) English, non-royal duchess is well described by Ms. Hatch.

As a duchess is so high in rank, she, too, was constantly in the limelight either for good or ill, whether or not she wanted to be. A duchess, or any wife of a peer, was expected to throw lavish balls, dinner parties, house parties as well as support charitable organizations and sponsor musicians. And Heaven help her if she wore the same gown in public or failed to have the best, most tasteful gowns, shoes, jewels, gloves, hats! Demands on her time, appearance, and favor probably led to a great deal of stress as she strove to uphold the ideal. The higher the rank, the higher the expectations, and the more subject she was to criticism from the bitter and jealous.

A duchess suo jure would also have to perform the duties of a duke. Attending on the king, running the duchy’s vast estates and managing its finances, arranging for someone to take her seat in the house of lords (which as a woman even a duchess in her own right could not do.) Of course, like most peers of power and privilege a regency era duchess would have managers and overseers to do the actual work, but the duchess’s involvement was essential and took its toll in time and stress added to the activities of a duchess by marriage.

The marriage of a duchess suo jure would have distinct issues. The permission of the crown might be required. During the regency, “Husbands of peeresses acquired an important right from their wives’ peerages. For example, in 1818 Lady Willoughby de Eresby’s husband fulfilled her role as Hereditary Great Chamberlain of England.” (http://laura.chinet.com/html/titles08.html, Laura A. Wallace, 1997). So, a Duchess suo jure did not of necessity lose all authority upon marriage, but she would be relieved of any hereditary duties associated with the title. Even more worrisome could be the selection of an appropriate spouse during the regency. The ideal for any woman would be to marry up, i.e. gain social status, wealth and power by marriage. With so few non-royal duchies, where was a duchess in her own right to find an eligible parti? A king or prince would be higher on the scale but even more scarce than dukes, if one wished to wed an Englishman. Dukes were few and far between. Marquesses and earls were more plentiful, but lower on the social rung. Anything lower, a viscount, a mere lord, a baron, or heaven forbid a commoner, would not be considered. Such were the dilemma’s facing an ordinary duchess.

Marielle Petersham aka Her Grace, Duchess of Stonegreave is not your ordinary English Duchess. She is the fictional heroine of my novel The French Duchess. She is a Duchess suo jure and thereby a member of a very select group of women, both fictional and non. She is a bit of a recluse, due to circumstances in her past not by preference. This reclusiveness sets her aside from the majority of duchesses whose lives were lived in the social spotlight of their day. She takes her ducal duties very seriously, as a suo jure duchess should, but despairs of ever marrying. Partly this despair exists because of who she is—duchess in her own right, and partly because of that circumstance in her past which isolates her and caused her reclusiveness. She is fierce in defense of her family and her nation, going to great lengths to keep both safe. Her determination leads her into some very un-duchess like behavior. Eventually, she weds a second son of a baron without seeking the crown’s permission. Initially, Marielle stands alone in her fight to save family and country against nearly insurmountable odds. That she succeeds is a testament to her strength of will and her willingness to recognize and accept the help that eventually comes her way. On every count, for her time in history, the Duchess of Stonegreave is an extraordinary woman,

I wonder how would you feel if you were elevated to high rank and responsibility?

The French Duchess

In this rollicking Regency novel, a breathless chase through England and France to stop an assassination attempt on Napoleon leads to love.
Like the Englishmen who faced down the French army, the men who love Marielle Petersham, Duchess of Stonegreave, usually die. Hence, the ton has dubbed her the French Duchess. After a particularly notorious indiscretion, Marielle retired from society, determined to immerse herself in good works to wash the stain from her family name for the next generations.
Captain Sir Richard Campion despises his childhood friend for the mess she made of her life, especially since it led to his best friend’s death. But now Richard has been tasked by the Crown to stop a plot to assassinate Napoleon Bonaparte that could plunge Europe back into war. Marielle is the one person who holds a clue to the plotters, and so he must seek her out and discover where her loyalties lie, even if it involves a bit of subterfuge.
As they dash through France, determined to head off disaster, old affections begin to reignite. But can they truly trust one another long enough to save the continent?

Bringer of Chaos: the Origin of Pietas by Kayelle Allen #RLFblog #SciFi #PietasToday’s featured book is Bringer of Chaos: the Origin of Pietas a science fiction novel by Kayelle Allen.

Why should Pietas end the war with humans?

His people are winning, yet they insist on peace talks. The Ultra people want to grant humans a seat on the Council. Pietas ap Lorectic, Chancellor of the High Council, War Leader and First Conqueror, disagrees. What’s best for mortals is oppression, control, and if necessary, elimination.

Pietas seethes with rage at the idea of human equality. Humans might have created Ultras, but the creation has far surpassed the creator. Humans die. Ultras are reborn, no matter how grievous the injury. They have no equals.

His people permit him no choice. He must attend these insipid peace talks on Enderium Six and what’s worse, be polite. To humans.

When a human special ops warrior is killed in battle, he’s resurrected in a secret process and inducted into the Ghost Corps. He’s given enough strength to perma-kill immortal Ultras. Ghosts are the most hated and feared of warriors.

When the ghost entraps and captures Pietas at the peace talks, the two begin a long journey toward Sempervia, an isolated and forgotten world. Once there, Pietas is marooned and the ghost abandoned alongside him. The two must either fight to perma-death, or join forces to survive.

As Pietas comes to trust the human, an unlikely and awkward friendship begins. Until he discovers how ghosts are resurrected…

The Ultimate Road Trip #Memoir Linda Brendle @LindaBrendle #RLFblog #RoadTripLinda Brendle author of A Long and Winding Road: A Caregiver’s Tale of Life, Love, and Chaos answers five easy questions.

Please tell us about yourself.
I cared for my parents — both of whom had dementia – for 15 years. I began writing in the hope of maintaining my sanity and of encouraging, inspiring, and amusing other caregivers, and anyone going through a difficult time, with my experiences.

I’m a life-begins-at-50 kind of gal. I received my BAS in management and psychology at 51, found new love at 52, learned to ride a motorcycle at 56, and published my first book after I began collecting Social Security. My husband David and I live outside a small East Texas town with a cat named Kitty who adopted us a couple of years ago. I am a blogger, a correspondent for our local weekly newspaper, and I work as the part-time secretary at my church in order to support my writing habit.

What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?
I like a wide variety of foods, but this would probably my favorite menu because it’s David’s favorite. Half the fun of cooking is seeing someone enjoy what you put on the table!

Describe the perfect vacation.
The trip I described in my memoir was nearly perfect. The chaos of caring for two people with dementia was a bit of a distraction, but we managed to make some beautiful memories anyway. The perfect vacation would be one without a time limit – a time when David and I could drive around the country in our motor home, stopping when we found something of interest and moving on when the spirit moved us. There are many amazing sights we have yet to see and many friendly people we have yet to meet. A year or so on the road is definitely on our bucket list.
Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.
My favorite toy was my older brother Jim. He is five years my senior, and he was always much more interesting than any doll or game in my toy box. As my mom used to say, he was always “hatching up” something, and I always wanted to be involved.
When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?
My choice of recreational reading is an odd one for the author of a memoir. Ever since I discovered my first Agatha Christie novel in the fifth grade, I have been a fan of tales of mystery and suspense. After I read everything Christie had to offer, I moved on to Dick Francis, Sue Grafton, Robert B. Parker, and others too numerous to mention. A couple of years ago, I decided to try my hand at a suspense novel of my own. If anything comes of it, I’ll let you know.
If the hero of your latest book called you on the phone, what would be a perfect ringtone for him?
My husband David has been a motorcycle rider since his uncle taught him to ride an old Cushman when he was nine years old. His perfect ringtone would be the sound of a Harley engine being revved as loud as possible. Many readers of A Long and Winding Road  have commented that David is the real hero of my story because of all the love and support he gave to me and my parents during my caregiving experience.

Alzheimer’s is a family disease, and this is a love story – not a boy meets girls love story, but a family love story. It is the story of the love between a daughter and her parents and her willingness to take them into her home when they could no longer care for themselves; the story of a mother and a father who loved their daughter but no longer remembered exactly where they were or why; the story of a husband who loved his wife so much that he stood beside her as they fought to survive the ravages of the brain-wasting disease that was stealing her loved ones away a piece at a time. It’s also the story of a seven-week trip for four across sixteen U.S. states in a forty-foot motor home – a trip that involved stopped up toilets, wet jeans, laughter, and headaches that were far from the easygoing retirement the Brendles had imagined for themselves.

Linda Brendle takes you on a roller-coaster ride of emotional and spiritual challenges that many families are facing right now. Co-dependency, mental breakdowns, and finding love after divorce are just a few of the issues weaved into this journey of caregiving.

Linda Brendle cared for her mother and father — both of whom had dementia — for 15 years. She began writing in the hope of maintaining her own sanity and of encouraging, inspiring, and amusing other caregivers with her experiences. Linda received her BAS in management and psychology in 1998 and retired in 2007 after 40 years in the business world. She has traveled both in the U.S. and abroad, and since meeting her husband David in 2000, she has done much of that travel by motorcycle and RV. She and David now live outside a small town in East Texas where she gardens, writes, and takes an active role in her church.
