Juror No 7 by Mallory Kane

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

Police detective Brand Gallagher is bent on revenge against mob boss Giovanni Castellano, the man who ordered his brother’s death. Now undercover within the mob, he’s getting closer to exacting his long-planned vengeance. But when he’s ordered to kill a juror who refused to hang a jury, Brand knows he can’t do it. He has to save Juror No 7, the lovely Lily Raines, even though it will blow the cover on his three-year mission.

Lily is threatened by thugs to set a killer free, but her father taught her to do the right thing, so she votes to convict. Now her life is in danger and her only hope is a mob hit man named Brand. But Brand seems more like a hero than a thug.

Brand and Lily find themselves on the run, with no one to depend on except each other. Lily trusts Brand with her life, but can she trust him with her heart? By protecting Lily, Brand could lose everything he’s worked for, and gain all he’s ever wanted.

Why did you write this book?

I wrote Juror No 7 because I’ve always loved courtroom dramas. I also love the kind of romantic suspense novel where all seems lost and the only way the hero and heroine can survive is to trust each other, even though the odds are stacked against them. When I thought about the idea of a juror’s life being threatened to vote innocent, even though the evidence of the defendant’s guilt is overwhelming, and an undercover cop who is ordered to kill her when she votes to convict, well, I could not wait to write their story and find out how they manage to survive.

What is your favorite genre to read?

I love romantic suspense. The idea of hero and heroine falling in love, while their lives are in danger and everything around them is falling apart, is incredibly compelling to me. Since I love romance and suspense, the two of them together is a treat I can never resist.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Perhaps, in answer to this question, I should name Huckleberry Finn, or Helen of Troy, or MacBeth, or a thousand other enduring characters created by the most preeminent authors in literature. However, my favorite character is a boy in a small, juvenile science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein. Granted, Heinlein is a preeminent author, and to me, this small book of his is a treasure. Thorby, in Citizen of the Galaxy, first published in 1957,  is a very young boy bought in a slave market by an old beggar who is more than he seems to be. Thorby learns about the world beyond their planet by the beggar, then he’s adopted by a family who lives on a spaceship. Eventually the truth of Thorby’s identity is discovered and his destiny is to be one of the richest and most influential people in the galaxy. The knowledge he gains is monumental, but pales in comparison to the empathy, integrity, and compassion he learns as he moves through the tragedies and fortunes of his life. He becomes a true hero.

What are you working on at the moment?

My next project is a 3 book series of romantic suspense novels about former Air Force Special Ops military men who, in remembrance of those who never made it home, have dedicated their lives to rescuing the innocent.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

I plan to edit and publish the three Special Ops books I mentioned above within the next few months. After that, I hope to work on a new series about an old unsolved murder in a small town. The mystery resurfaces and the five people who may have the key to the murderer are being targeted by danger and intimidation.
