For millennia, they fight side by side. Now one king faces a lonely quest.

As Light and Shadow, King Pietas and General Cyken share every battle, as well as a fierce and passionate love.

But, torn apart by the king’s rage, Cyken ends their stormy relationship.

When Cyken falls in love with another man, Pietas undertakes a perilous quest on the dangerous world of Felidae to prove he is the better choice.

If he succeeds in his quest, it will either bring Cyken back, or drive him even closer to his new love. Pietas must try, for he cannot face eternity without a shadow to balance his light…

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.

It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

That’s a bad thing for Pietas. If left to his own devices, he tends to get into trouble. Or start it.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

He’s not driven by appetite. He likes most food. But he’d probably go for some chips or similar food if he wanted a snack.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

He lives in uniform. It’s white with teal trim, with knee high boots. But in private when relaxing, he pulls on a loose tunic and pants, and then goes barefoot.

Does he know how to fix things?

He’s over 12k years old. He’s broken more things than most people could ever fix, but he’s learned how to put most stuff back together.

He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

Pietas had been held up at gunpoint and refused to surrender the ring he was wearing (the item for which the book is named). He got knocked out cold by a pulsewave that would have killed a human. He came to only after being tossed out of low-hovering shuttle into a river. He did get the ring back, however. Others have tried to steal it, but no one has gotten away with it. He’s had the ring for hundreds of years. It was a gift from a dear friend / ex-lover.

How does he act around children he doesn’t know?

Children seem to like him and they are comfortable around him, yet adults view him as cold and distant. Perhaps he lets down his guard more around kids.

What is he like first thing in the morning?

Wakes up the moment he opens his eyes. No such thing as groggy with Pietas.

How does he act around people who don’t know what he is?

Reserved, quiet. He lets others talk and reveal themselves.

Will he let a worker handle things or do it himself?

He expects someone to whom he delegates authority to handle the situation. Pietas might do it better and faster, but he believes in training others so he doesn’t have to do it himself. He’s taught himself “forbearance” rather than patience. As he says, you don’t gain patience by having everything go your way.

Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

His skin rejuvenates so fast there is no time for ink to settle in before it’s gone. He does, however, seek out body modification artists when he’s in a new city, and asks for a piercing at the end of his left eyebrow. It lasts only a couple days and he will wake up to find it on his pillow. When he’s depressed, he will ask for a small tattoo of a dragon, usually on an upper arm. It has to be small, otherwise, the artist would see the first part of the work disappearing while the last is yet incomplete. Pietas says pain helps him focus and gain insight, but he does not self-harm.

Personal vehicle or public transport?

Hired. His ship, Le Persequor, is absolutely massive. It could never land on a planet. The style of vehicles changes from one world to the next, so rather than buy one on each, he uses hired vehicles. Whatever the equivalent is to an Uber or taxi. Or he calls up someone he knows on that world and asks them to ferry him around.

Recycle or toss?

Always recycle. He wastes nothing. Even food goes into compost.

Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!
