Slade by Julie Lence

Slade Barlow discovers hiding out at Jill’s corn farm is more rewarding than stealing from the Arizona silver mines.
Genre Western Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG-13
Managing the farm since her pa’s death hasn’t been easy for Jillianne Prescott. The list of repairs is long and money is scarce. To add to her burdens is the deal Ma struck up with the sheriff. In exchange for food and a warm bed, the sheriff sends his prisoners to work the farm. Never one to bother with men, Jillianne is nonetheless thankful for the help, until, one by one, they run off. This latest one won’t be any different. Heavily muscled and full of tomfoolery, she has no doubt he’ll sneak off to Mexico before the sun rises. But when he proves her wrong, and takes it upon himself to find the coyote prowling the farm at night, Jillianne can’t help but admit there’s more to Slade than sinew and tomfoolery.
Be the guest at a necktie social or work at the widow Prescott’s farm? He might be an outlaw, and have a lot of faults, but stupidity isn’t one of them. Slade Barlow will hide out at the farm until tempers cool and then leave Texas for good, have the spread he’s been saving for. But the widow isn’t the frail woman he expected. And her daughter does things to his gut best left ignored. Then again, Jill has an intriguing birthmark. And curves his fingers itch to explore. Sassy and pretty, she’s the type of woman a man marries. Never one to favor a woman’s long list of rules, he’ll keep his distance, track down her coyote, and steal more than one kiss from her.

Know the Hero from Slade

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.
It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?
It depends on where he is. If he’s in a town, Slade is likely to find the nearest poker game and gamble until dawn. If’s he’s out in the open, he’ll make camp and lounge by the fire until he falls asleep.
What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?
Jerky. It’s something he can easily stuff into his pocket or saddlebags and take with him.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
Dark trousers, comfortable checkered shirt, his worn boots and Stetson.
Does he know how to fix things?
Slade can mend a fence line and build a porch; an old Colorado ranch hand taught him how to work with wood. But to fix something such as a cookstove or a chimney, he doesn’t have those skills.
He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
In Arizona territory, someone stole Slade’s poker winnings. Two outlaws blamed the theft on Roth, another outlaw with a reputation just as dangerous as Slade’s. Believing his buddies, Slade tracks Roth to Revolving Point, TX and discovers that Roth is now married. To lure Roth into the open and assure the outlaw returns Slade’s money, Slade breaks into Roth’s home and uses Roth’s wife as bait… and succumbs to a gunshot wound. He’s hauled off to jail, and the only thing saving him from Roth killing him, or the governor from throwing him in Huntsville Penitentiary since Roth’s wife is his niece, is notorious outlaw turned sheriff, Buck Grayson.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
He’s not mean, but he doesn’t go out of his way to acknowledge them. Mostly he avoids eye contact and side-steps around them. He grew up in a brothel, left home when he was 18 and took on various jobs before turning to outlawing. None of which really put him in the company of children to learn how to interact with them.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
If he’s around a campfire, he’ll get the coffee cooking and feed his horse. In town, he’s likely to hit up the eatery, or the saloon, for coffee. On Jill’s farm, he’s milking the cow and prowling for her intruder before his morning coffee.
How does he handle things when in a “proper” social situation?
He doesn’t concern himself with polite society, knows he’s rude and brash and prefers to keep that persona, until he meets Jill. Unwilling to cause trouble for her, or embarrass her, he tones down some of his brashness.
Valet or takes care of himself?
He takes care of himself. If he were ever introduced to a valet, he’d send the valet running for the hills.
Necktie/cravat or open shirt?
Open shirt. Slade has little use for fancy clothes.
Sleeves buttoned or rolled up?
Both.
Powdered wig or natural hair?
Natural hair. He’s the type to poke fun at a wig, and any man who wears one.
Carriage or horseback?
He prefers horseback, but isn’t against riding in a carriage or a buckboard.
Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!

A friend introduced her to the romance genre in the late 80’s and she was instantly hooked, crediting Judith McNaught and Johanna Lindsey as her inspirations to pen her own novels.
