Character Interview – the Lindquist Sisters

The last book in my new three book contemporary romance series, Love at Solace Lake, releases on March 28, 2018. The series centers around three sisters who inherit a run-down fishing lodge in Minnesota from their grandparents. Each of the sisters has a different reaction to the inheritance. They grew up at Solace Lake Lodge, raised by their grandparents after their parents drowned there in what was ruled by the police as a murder/suicide.

I’d like to introduce you to the Lindquist sisters – Harper, the responsible oldest sister, Scarlet, the troubled middle child and Maggie, the secretive baby of the family. It’s three weeks before Christmas and six weeks before the series begins. Scarlet has arranged a conference call with her sisters:

Scarlett: Harper? Maggie? Are you there?

Harper: I’m here! It’s wonderful to hear your voice. We haven’t talked in forever.

Scarlett: It’s only been a few weeks.

Harper: Maybe, but it feels like a year. Chicago is so far away. I can’t wait to see you again. When are you going to arrive here at the lodge?

Scarlett: Yeah, about that–

Maggie: Hi. Sorry I’m late. (Yawns.) Did I miss anything?

Scarlett: (with sarcasm) I hope we’re not keeping you up.

Maggie: Give it a rest, Scarlet. I just got home from the restaurant and I’m exhausted.

Harper: I’m happy you were able to make the call, sweetheart. And I’m thankful you arranged it, Scarlet. It gives us a chance to discuss our plans for Christmas.

Scarlet and Maggie together: About Christmas…

Harper: What about it?

Maggie: I’m sorry, Harper, but I can’t come out to the lodge for Christmas. I have to work. The restaurant is really busy over Christmas and I’m the chef with least seniority.

Harper: Oh. Well, okay. What if Scarlet and I come to Minneapolis and stay at your place? I could cook a turkey and we can open presents when you get home. That way we could still be together, even if it’s not at the lodge.

Scarlett: Harper, I’m sorry but I’m not coming home for Christmas either. That’s why I wanted to talk to you. I’m going to Cancun with friends.

Harper: Oh.

Scarlett: I need to get away and have some fun in the sun. You, know. Drink a few margaritas and flirt with good-looking men.

Harper: Yeah, sure.

Scarlett: I’m sorry, Harper. Please don’t be angry.

Harper: No, of course not. I’m not angry.

Maggie: Maybe not, but you’re disappointed. I can hear it in your voice.

Harper: Well sure, I would have liked to be with you both for Christmas, but since that’s not in the cards, it makes another decision easier for me. My boss at Miller’s Resort asked me to work over the holidays because so many other waitresses were asking for time off. But I wanted to see what you two were doing before I committed. Now I can tell her yes.

Maggie: You’re not just saying that to make us feel better, are you?

Harper: No, of course not. The restaurant is short-staffed. And I could always use the money.

Scarlett: To pay the heating bills in that old heap, no doubt. Why don’t you sell the lodge, or what’s left of it, and come live with me in Chicago? I’d love to have you nearby.

Harper: I’d love to be close to you, too, but I can’t leave the lodge. Grampa gave it to all three of us. He’d want it to stay in the family. He’d want all three of us to work here together.

Maggie: You know that’s not going to happen. Even if I was interested, the lodge is a wreck, and we don’t have the money to make it a viable business again.

Harper: Yeah, but if we could find the money–

Scarlett: Nobody’s going to be crazy enough to loan you money, Harper. It’s too risky an investment. Sell the lodge and move someplace new. The lodge belongs in the past.

Harper: (quietly) Were you so unhappy at the lodge, Scarlet?

Scarlett: There are a lot of bad memories there.

Harper: Not all bad, I hope.

Maggie: There were happy times, too. Like the Christmases when Grampa would shovel the snow off a piece of the lake so we could skate. And then we sat in front of the fire next to the Christmas tree and opened presents.

Harper: We were all together.

Scarlett: Excerpt for Mom and Daddy.

(silence)

Harper: Yeah, except for them. (clears her throat) I should probably run. I promised one of my bookkeeping clients I’d finish her month end when she closed her hair salon.

Maggie: Isn’t one job enough for you?

Scarlett: If you got a job in an accounting firm in Chicago, you wouldn’t have to work so hard.

Harper: I’m not cut out to live in a big city. (pauses) Well, I guess this is goodnight. And Merry Christmas.

Maggie: Merry Christmas. I guess we’ll talk sometime after the New Year.

Scarlett: I hope you can have some fun, even if you’re both working.

Harper: Phone me as soon as you get home from Cancun so I know you’re safe.

Scarlett: You worry too much, but I will. I love you guys.

Harper: I love you, too.

Maggie: Likewise.

Jana Richards Social Media

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.
In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada with their Pug/Terrier cross Lou and several unnamed goldfish.
