Genre Historical Fiction

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Barely tolerating each other, Adrian and Gabrielle Bryce are trapped in Belgium as the clouds of war loom over Europe. Plunged into a nightmare of lies and betrayal, they flee for their lives as the German forces cross the border. Disguised as peasants, they avoid capture, witness death and atrocities, and reach safety as two different people who’ve found deep love. But, the tentacles of treachery have spread to England where Adrian faces charges of treason and a woman who’ll stop at nothing to see him dead.

Here are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

It’s late, she’s bored. What does she do?

Well, no one knows Gabrielle has a lover. If he’s not with her, she’s dreaming of him.

What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?

Gabrielle is an upper- class English lady with servants. Her meals are traditional, but chocolate is a favourite for after dinner.

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

She wore expensive but uninspiring clothes until that fateful trip to Belgium. When the Germans invaded, sparking World War One, she and her husband Adrian, whom she despised, had to run for their lives. To survive, she wore anything to hide her identity.

Does she know how to fix things?

She couldn’t slice bread until they were trapped in Belgium. Fear and hunger and deprivation soon taught her to be self-sufficient.

She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

She was expected to marry well, and she did – to the wealthy Adrian Bryce. Eight years and two children later they could barely stand the sight of each other, until they travelled to Belgium – where a war was about to hit the world.

How does she act around children she doesn’t know?

Gabrielle is very fond of children.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

Mornings in her upper class world were orderly and pleasant until she and Adrian were betrayed in Belgium. After that, her mornings were gut wrenching fear of being caught, hiding in ditches and barns and looking for food.

How does she handle things when in a “proper” social situation?

Very well, Gabrielle was born into a wealthy upper class family.

Maid or takes care of herself?

Gabrielle had a maid until the world as she knew it ended in 1914. The terrifying journey through Belgium to safety taught her a lot – being self sufficient was one big lesson.

Proper dress or casual clothes?

Always proper clothes

Sleeves buttoned or rolled up?

Sleeves buttoned

Powdered wig or natural hair?

Carriage or horseback?
