Interview

How did you get your
start in the industry?
I was bored at work one day and started writing a story. It grew from there.
My only real concern was that I was hitting my mid-forties, and worried it was too
late to start. When I realized I truly wanted to do it, I took many on-line classes,
I joined RWA and some other networks and I started focusing on accomplishing my
goal. Very few people knew what I was up to. Until I got that contract, I was tight-lipped
about the whole adventure.
What is the most
important thing you do for your career now, as compared to when you first started
writing?
The promo, and establishing myself as an author. It’s time consuming but necessary,
and I’m currently struggling with finding the right balance. It’s not easy some
days. But I’m committed to this, so, I’m doing what I have to do to get my name
out there. Things like posting my book cover, doing guest blogs and interviews such
as this to (hopefully) make people aware of who I am and what I’m writing about.
I want to make this work, so I need to creating a solid foundation and following.
If you could change
something about your first book, what would it be?
Worth the Risk is my first book and it’s a novella. Had I known when I started
writing it what I know now, I’d probably make it a full length novel. I’ve had a
few people tell they wanted more. But that’s a good thing right? J
What do you enjoy
most about writing?
The satisfaction I get out of finishing the story. It’s awesome. If it doesn’t
go anywhere, I still feel good about it.
And the people I get to meet, even if it is only online in many cases. I’ve
met some fabulous authors, both new and already established. They are a very supportive
network that I know I can count on to give me advice, celebrate my achievements
and console me when I’m having a rough time. They understand those things my friends
and family can’t.
If you could choose
anyone to be your mentor who would it be?
I would have two – Suzanne Brockmann and Lora Leigh. Besides the fact that
they are two of my favourite authors, they have the blend of suspense and erotic
romance that I like. They also have the contemporary and paranormal that I’m looking
for. I would love to spend some time with these two ladies.
What are some jobs
you’ve done before (or while) you were a writer?
I work full time out
of the house. I’m a Project Management Professional and have been in the industry
for about 25 years. I’ve worked on projects in the nuclear, construction, engineering,
IT, and facility management industries. Currently, I work for the Municipal Government
as an internal consultant doing business and process reviews, and risk management.
What kind of books
do you read when taking a break from your own writing?
90% of the time I read romantic suspense and erotic romance. Most are contemporary
but some paranormal as well. I lean towards shape shifter stories when I go that
route. I do occasionally read some historical – 1800 era – usually the Wild West.
Just not as often as I used to.
What do you think
is the future of traditional publishing?
I think the world of publishing is changing, leaning more towards electronic
first and print second. Personally, my preference will always be a print copy, something
I can hold in my hands and turn the pages. I love curling up on a cold rainy or
wintery day with a hot drink and a good book.
But, I also realize that today, people like convenience and when you can down
load onto your hand held device without leaving the comfort of your home? It’s faster,
cheaper, easier. I also think the digital route is allowing more authors to realize
their dreams sooner rather than later, without having to find agents to help them.
I don’t think I would be published if it wasn’t for this shift in the way things
are happening. Certainly not yet.
What was the proudest
moment of your life so far?
That’s a tough question.
The day I married my husband and the birth of each of my three children are certainly
up there, and I wouldn’t be able to choose one over the others. So, I’ll go with
… the day I got the email that etopia press wanted to publish this story. Why?
Because it’s my very first, and I’ve only been working at this seriously for a relatively
short time. Realizing that I actually accomplished what I set out to do, at this
point in my life, has made me extremely proud of myself. Not only that, it made
my husband very proud of me too. J
Imagine you get to
go on a dream vacation, but you have only one hour to pack and leave, and it starts
as soon as you finish this interview. What will you take with you and where will
you go?
Hedo in Negril Jamaica.
I won’t need any clothes so my packing is light. Well, a wrap and maybe a short
dress and my makeup for when I have to go to dinner. LOL.
What is your favorite
holiday and why?
Christmas. I’m like
a little kid. All the presents, the food, the lights and decorations. I’m very traditional
and I’m a quantity gal. I don’t like putting anything under the tree until everyone
has gone to sleep because I like the surprise of the moment in the morning. And
I absolutely love sitting in a darkened house, looking at a lit tree, surrounded
by wrapped gifts. It’s super quiet, very pretty, and it always makes me think of
my childhood. That’s the best.
What good book have
you read recently?
Double Time by Olivia Cunning. Hot Ticket is next.
What do you like
to do when you’re bored?
I read one of my many,
many, many books.

Books Coming Soon

I’m working on a couple
of series that I hope to have contracted before the end of the year. One is a paranormal
romantic suspense and the other is contemporary erotic romance. Both would have
a high heat level.
