    Interview with Katheryn Lane

    Why did you write this
    book?
    I love Texas
and I’ve been lucky enough to visit it several times. The Texas Cowboy begins with
Vicky seeing the cowboy, Jack, for the first time while she’s out shopping with
her cousin and this opening scene was inspired by something I saw one afternoon
    in Dallas. I was
in Highland Park Village and across the road I saw a cowboy
standing outside Hermes, holding one of their trademark boxes. Unlike Vicky, I didn’t
have the nerve to take a picture of him (I wish I had), and he didn’t wink at me,
but I did begin to wonder about who he was and who the orange box was for.
    What is your favorite
    genre to read?
I love to read a wide range of books, but my favorite has to
be romance. I love classic authors, such as Jane Austen and Shakespeare – Romeo
and Juliet must be one of the greatest love stories of all time – but I also enjoy
reading books by more modern romance writers, such as Nora Roberts and Jackie Collins.
In addition, ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved reading fairy tales. I guess
my love of romance started with stories like Sleeping Beauty and I have ‘borrowed’
several ideas from fairy tales for my own books. For example, the first part of
my latest sheikh romance, A Bride For The Sheikh, is loosely based on Cinderella.
    What is your favorite
character from fiction (not including your own characters)?
That’s a difficult question! There are so many wonderful characters
in literature that it’s like asking me to pick a favorite from a box of chocolates!
However, a couple of people do stand out. I love Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the
Wind and Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Although they are from different
eras and places, they are both witty, willful, beautiful women who are willing to
stand up for themselves in a male dominated world. At the beginning of each book,
they make the wrong choices and decisions, but in the end they discover who they
are and what they really want in life.
    Do you enjoy films and/or
TV shows? Which are your favorites?
I’m afraid I don’t have much free time to watch TV as most of
my time is taken up with work (I’m a high school teacher), looking after my children
and writing. However, when I get the chance I do like to go to the cinema and see
a good movie. I live in the Middle East, so the
cinemas here only show a limited range of films and they’re often heavily censored
which can sometimes make it hard to follow the plot! However, we get cable and occasionally
I’ll find the time to watch a great movie on TV. I’m not sure if I have a favorite,
but I always love watching anything with Antonio Banderas in it. He was a great
sheikh in Day of the Falcon and gorgeous in Zorro. I also love Johnny Depp – so
    sexy!
    What are you working on
at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
I have several things in the pipeline, including another possible
sheikh romance, but the main thing I’m working on at the moment is a potential sequel
to The Texas Cowboy. Although I originally wrote The Texas Cowboy as a stand-alone
novel, several readers have started to ask me about the hero and heroine’s future.
I don’t think I’d be giving too much away if I said that The Texas Cowboy ends,
like all good fairy tales and romance novels, with the hero, Jack, and heroine,
Vicky, overcoming the many obstacles that have confronted them and telling each
other how much they love each other. As with many romance novels, it’s implied that
they will get married and live happily ever after. However, readers have been asking
about their wedding and if Vicky’s rich Dallas
cousin will take over their wedding plans. Therefore, I might write a sequel and
perhaps call it The Texas Bride.
    Please tell us about your
    latest book.
The Texas Cowboy is my first cowboy romance; most of my other
romances have been sheikh romances inspired by what I see and hear where I live
in the Middle East. However, like my other novels,
The Texas Cowboy has lots of action, unexpected twists and turns, and plenty of
heartache, before the hero and heroine end up in each others arms, happily ever
    after.
Everything’s bigger in Texas, including the problems.
    When Vicky flies into Texas,
she immediately falls for the charms of local cowboy, Jack Cassidy. However,
    her wealthy Dallas
cousin, Laura, has other ideas and will do everything she can to steer Vicky
away from Jack and into the arms of a rich oilman.
Jack is resigned to living the life of a lonely cowboy whose
only female company is his horses–that is, until he meets Vicky. However,
Vicky isn’t the only person with a claim on his heart. Jack wasn’t always alone
and his ex is about to make a dramatic comeback.
Every cowboy has a past and this cowboy’s past is about to destroy
    his future.

    Author Bio

I’m a wife, teacher, author and mother of two boisterous boys,
so most of my days are taken up with finding lost school shoes, getting stuck in
traffic and wondering why I always join the queue that doesn’t move in the supermarket.
However, I try to forget these daily problems (and the fact that I burnt the toast
again this morning) by losing myself in a good book and writing novels that give
readers a break from everyday life.
Open one of my books and escape on a romantic adventure, because
it’s easier to buy a book than it is to book an air ticket.
Have a break, read a book!

    About the Character

    Name: Jed Stone
    Age: 25
    Gender: male
    Birthplace: New York City
    Profession: gambler
    Ethnicity/Species (if not human): white
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include
any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars:
Jed is 6’2″ and 180 pounds, with a muscled chest and thick,
dark-blonde hair and a mustache. He has crystal blue eyes and a killer smile that
melts hearts on both sides of the Mississippi. Think
Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid. Jed could be his younger brother!
    Who is the significant
other in your character’s life (hero/heroine)?
Lily Frontiere, who is the daughter of the most famous whorehouse
in San Francisco. She was shielded from the house
life and sent back east to a fancy boarding school and has returned to her home
to find her mother dying and in debt. Lily wanted to be an actress, which her mother
refused to allow her to do so, so she is using her acting skills and incredible
similarity to her mother to “play” Madam Lil. With a dark wig and heavy
make-up and her curves poured into one of Lil’s dresses, she is Madam Lil—but incredibly naïve and having
to learn quickly on the job how to manage her girls and the clientele they service.
    How educated is this character?
    Is he/she book smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?
Jed went to public schools, where during recess he played poker
with his teacher during recess and honed his math and gambling skills. He dropped
out as a teen because the midwife who raised him grew ill, and he needed to support
them. He worked at everything from a boot factory to a brewery, even keeping the
books at a pub while pouring drinks. He fought for the Union
in the Civil War and after the war ended, he put his street smarts and luck together
and became a gambler, mostly playing poker.
    What is your character’s
    family like?
Jed is an orphan, raised by Elmira,
the gruff midwife who delivered him. He doesn’t know many details about his background,
but will find out the truth when he arrives in San Francisco.
His father Gordon was an actor who pretended to marry a young Boston Brahmin teenager.
She gave birth to a son, and Gordon took off with the child. He wanted the baby
to show his millionaire grandfather that he’d become respectable, hoping Max would
put him in the will. Little did he know his dying “wife” gave birth to
a second son minutes later—an identical twin to the first son. Jed possess a locket
with his mother’s initials, which will play a key role in unraveling the tangled
    web of his past.
    What inner doubt causes
    your character the most difficulty?
Jed learns that his twin brother is wanted for robbery, rape,
and murder. He also discovers his father was a pretty shady character with a checkered
past. His fear is he’s got their “bad blood,” and he’ll never be able
to rise above it. He’s fallen in love, and he wants to be the best possible man
he can be for the woman he loves, but finding out about these two relatives creates
    doubt in his mind.
    What is your character’s
biggest need at the beginning of the story? As the story opens,
Jed’s biggest need is to get out of jail! He’s been arrested
based on a wanted poster and sentenced to be executed, but it’s actually his twin
who’s committed the crimes. Jed has no idea why his picture is on the poster, but
he’s not about to hang for another man’s crimes, so he needs to escape—and fast!
    How emotionally expressive
    is your character to others?
Jed is very self-contained, a reflection of his gambling skills
and instinct. He studies people and picks up on the little things about them. He’s
used many aliases in the past and holds his cards, literally and figuratively, close
to the chest. As he begins to fall in love with Lily, though, he opens up to the
possibilities of a life beyond gambling, and we see a very playful side to him.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

    Why do you think your
writer chose to write about you?
Lauren Linwood wanted to tell my story because she sees me as
very vulnerable. She was fascinated by the idea that identical twins could be separated
at birth and resemble each other so closely, yet turn out very differently.
    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
I can’t believe she let the cat out of the bag and told people
how I donate a portion of my poker winnings to various orphanages in each town I
pass through. Just because I’m an orphan and know how hard that life can be, I feel
she had no right revealing something so personal.
    Why do you think your
    writer loves to write?
Lauren loves to tell stories—the more complex and twisty, the
better. She loves creating people and their worlds and sharing them with readers.
She wants to entertain and make readers happy when they get that happily ever after
ending. I’m grateful that despite all the complications she threw at me, I was able
to find my golden ending with Lily, the love of my life, and learn about my true
    roots.
    What do you wish your
    writer would write next?
When I have kids with Lily, I think their story would be an interesting
one to read about. They would come of age at the turn of a new century in America, so that alone would make for a special story. Besides,
who wouldn’t want to read the love story of their own children? Mine turned out
so well, and I hope Lauren would give my kids their own soul mates for life!
    What other character from
your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
Lauren would never admit to this, but her two favorite characters
in A Game of Chance are Harold, the butler, and Cleveland Armstrong, a bank clerk.
Harold has a great sense of humor and is incredibly loyal. I think she should give
him a good woman to share his laughter and love. And in the epilogue, Lauren reveals
Cleveland is doing something very special with his
life. He’s the true hero in A Game of Chance, and I believe he deserves his own
book and happily ever after, just like Lily and I got.
    Is there anything you’d
like to say to your writer?
Lauren knows how grateful I am to her for bringing Lily and me
together. We definitely had some bumps along the way, but I want her to know that
I truly am the man she thought I was, and I plan to be the best man I can be, for
both Lily and me. I’m ready to start a new chapter in my life, and I look forward
to my future—all thanks to Lauren and her vivid imagination.

    Author Bio

As a child, Lauren Linwood gathered her neighborhood friends
together and made up stories for them to act out, her first venture into creating
memorable characters. Following her passion for history and love of learning, she
became a teacher who began writing on the side to maintain her sanity in a sea of
    teenage hormones.
Lauren’s novels focus on two of her favorite eras, medieval times
and the American Old West. History is the backdrop that places her characters in
extraordinary circumstances, where their intense desire and yearning for one another
grows into the deep, tender, treasured gift of love.
Lauren, a native Texan, lives in a Dallas
suburb with her family. An avid reader, moviegoer, and sports fan, she manages stress
by alternating yoga with five mile walks. She is thinking about starting a support
group for Pinterest and House Hunters addicts.

    Top 10 Reasons to Love a Cowboy @authorkristina #RLFblog

    What a Texas Girl Needs
Today’s guest post is by author Kristina Knight.
I’ve been a fan of the Cowboys (the football team and the real-life
guys) for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching cowboy movies with my grandfather
and reading Louis L’Amour books once my brother was done with them. I was just a
leeetle bit of a tom-boy. But the reason I loved those old movies and books were
the romantic cowboys themselves – the guys who loved their land and stood up for
    what they believed in.
I always wanted to meet one of those Old West Cowboys.
Without further ado, here are my Top 10 Reasons to Love Cowboys:
    10. They look good in hats. Cowboys don’t just wear hats for
the fashion statement, hats are a protection from the cold, heat and other weather.
But it takes the right guy to look good in a hat.
    9. They’re honest. Sometimes to a fault. Cowboys don’t temper
their arguments. Cowboys don’t compromise. They see the world as black and white…and
    that is kind of refreshing.
    8. They’re committed. Whether it’s to the land they love or the
    women, cowboys are committed.
    7. They know how to have fun. Camping under the stars, dancing
at a honky-tonk or just watching a movie at home, cowboys know what they like. And
    what they like is fun.
    6. They stand up for what they believe in. This goes back to
Reason #8 – cowboys have a strong belief system and they stand up for it every day.
    5. Cowboys look good in Wranglers. Or Levis. Enough said.
    4. Those grins! Cowboys, in my experience, have a wicked sense
of humor. And no one is immune.
    3. They know how to drive and ride. Whether it’s a big, black
truck or a big, black horse, cowboys are in charge.
    2. They’re romantic. No, they may not bring flowers home every
night but a cowboy will never leave his lady wondering where she stands with him.
    1. They’re a symbol – of what we all want. Cowboys know who they
are, what they want and what they’re willing to do to get that thing. Isn’t that
    what we all want?
In What a Texas Girl Needs, Mat has a secret that may ruin his
life as a cowboy. . .but it’s a secret he doesn’t know if he can share with Vanessa,
even though he loves her. In What a Texas Girl Dreams, Trick knows exactly what
he wants – Monica Witte – and he’s going to do whatever it takes to win her heart.

    What a Texas
    Girl Needs
    Blurb:
Vanessa Witte is ready to finally claim her life. The middle
of three daughters born into the Witte family – a powerful Texas name – she’s been content to float through
life. Being dumped by her shady ex? A blessing in disguise. Having a one-night-stand
with Matias Barnes? Not one of her more stellar moments. But she’s back in Lockhardt
with a secret and a reason to start fresh: A baby.
Matias Barnes knows all about society women – it’s part of the
reason he left his wealthy family behind and took a job on a ranch. He doesn’t like
the endless string of parties, the inane conversation, or the gold-digging tricks
those women have perfected. But that doesn’t stop him from wanting Vanessa Witte.
Mat knows she’s so not right for him, but with her back in Lockhardt, can he resist
her charms long enough to really let her go?

    Interview

What is the most important thing you do for your career now,
as compared to when you first started writing?
    Take a little time. This
is going to sound contradictory, but there are times when the words just aren’t
flowing and I feel stuck. I take those times and do something else – a quilting
project or a walk around the neighborhood. I will sit myself down and force the
words if it comes to that, but I’ve learned that sometimes you just have to take
yourself away from ‘work’ when those moments happens.
If you could give the younger version of yourself advice what
    would it be?
    Don’t be afraid. I’ve
always wanted to be a writer, but I never knew what to do about it. I thought writers
all lived these big, exciting lives in New York
    or Paris before
writing their stories. I didn’t think I could do that, so I took another path and
used my writing talents in journalism. And eventually I decided to stop being afraid…
What is your work ethic when it comes to writing?
    This is where the contradiction
I mentioned above comes in, because my mantra is ‘get’r’dun’: when I have a deadline,
I make a calendar with daily wordcount goals, research goals and so on. And I make
sure I get those words in on a daily basis. There are days when the words aren’t
flowing and I can’t stand being butt-in-chair any longer. I do take a break those
days – maybe I’ll swim with my daughter or go for a walk with my husband or just
wander the mall by myself…but I do make myself return to my WIP and get those words
    in.
Do things your family or friends do ever end up in a book?
    Ha! That’s a question,
isn’t it? Actual family members or friends, no. Funny things that happen might get
    fictionalized at some point…
What are some jobs you’ve done before (or while) you were
    a writer?
    I was a journalist and
am still a freelance writer for magazines. I have a radio show and I’ve been the
assistant director for an environmental non-profit. And all of those jobs have (or
will) show up in a book…at some point!
What kind of books do you read when taking a break from your
    own writing?
    I read everything. Some
of my favorite authors are: Lisa Wingate, Nora Roberts, Lisa Kleypas, Jayne Ann
Krentz. I do read primarily romance, but I love a good biography, true crime or
thriller, too. It kind of depends on my mood.
What was the proudest moment of your life so far?
    There are a couple: when
our adoption of bebe was finalized, that was a cool moment, and when she graduated
from pre-school this spring. I couldn’t stop grinning. And, when my first book was
contracted – it was a moment of relief and excitement and pride because I’d written
those words and they had resonated with an editor and a new path was opening up
    to me.
What is your favorite holiday and why?
    Valentine’s Day because
of the flowers and the 4th of July because of the fireworks. Or it’s
Labor Day because it’s also my birthday every few years. Maybe Christmas because
of the presents but, no, I’m going with New Year’s because it’s the start of something
    new!
Where were you at midnight, on December 31st when the new
    century started?
I was in a hotel ballroom, camera and microphone in hand to report
on the Y2K virus – you know, the Virus that Wasn’t? – and when nothing happened
I did a quick, ‘Happy New Year’ report, packed up and went home to celebrate with
    RadioMan.

I do things as fast as possible.”
