Character Interview: Maggie from Written in the Cards @LaurenLinwood #RLFblog #western

    Written in the Cards

    About the Book

    Title: Written in the Cards
    Genre: western historical romance
    Author Name: Lauren Linwood
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13
    Maggie Rutherford jilts
her too-perfect society groom at the altar and flees New York for the American West, where she turns
her travels into dime novels that she writes and illustrates under the pen name
    Lud Madison.
    After the Civil War,
veteran Ben Morgan marries his childhood sweetheart and takes her to homestead on
the Great Plains. Losing her and their unborn child
in an Indian attack, Ben detaches from emotion and becomes a roaming gambler. When
he kills a cheating opponent in self-defense, the man’s gunslinger brother swears
    revenge upon Ben.
    Ben hides on a cattle
drive and brings in a herd to Abilene,
where a waiting Maggie wants to find a rough and tumble cowboy to interview for
her next story idea. Sparks fly as the dangerous
drover and popular novelist wind up living in the same household, running a general
    store east of Abilene.
But with Black Tex Lonnegan hot on his trail, will Ben run from his growing attraction
to Maggie and the gunfighter’s promise of death–or will he make a stand for his
    life–and love?

    Interview with Maggie Rutherford:

    Tell us about yourself,
    please.
I’d be delighted to. My name is Maggie Rutherford, and I grew
    up in New York City.
    I was the

one who spoke up and objected to being married at my own wedding. I rushed
out, leaving hundreds of society gossipers to rake me over the coals. I decided
that I couldn’t marry a man I didn’t love or respect, and so I’ve made my way across
the West. I write dime novels under a pen name for my family’s publishing company.
I thought my stories of adventure would sell better under a man’s name, and I definitely
didn’t want my brother, the head of Rutherford House, to give me a pity publish.

    What is your family like?
My mother died when I was quite young, so I don’t remember her
at all. Papa totally ignored me for his publishing empire, disappointed that I was
a girl. I worshipped my older brother Marcus, and I’ll admit he spoiled me rotten.
I traipsed after him and his best friend Frank, who’s truly family to me. If they
rode, so did I. If they took fencing or boxing lessons, then I was their shadow
and learned every move. My aunt Harriet feels she’s failed me somehow because I’m
not interested in needlepoint or the necessary social graces to be a success in
    society.
    What special skills do
    you rely on?
    Outlaw Muse
My brain is my largest muscle, and I flex it every chance I get!
I don’t understand these empty-headed females—or at least those who pretend to be
empty-headed. I’m blessed with two skills that are helping me support myself since
I’ve moved to the West. I have quite an imagination, and I draw upon it heavily
as I write my dime novels. I’m also quite handy with pen and ink or charcoals, and
so I also illustrate my books. The money I’ve made as a dime novelist has helped
me pay my way without relying on my family’s publishing fortune.
    If someone from your past
showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?
I would not want to spend a single minute in the presence of
my former fiancé. Richard was not the man I thought he was, and that was bitterly
disappointing. He would never have let me spread my wings and soar. He wanted to
keep me in a cage that would have become my prison.
    Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?
I couldn’t imagine being any happier than I am at this moment.
I’ve found a career that I can be proud of. I’ve discovered the town I’m meant to
settle down in, with my dearest friends Frank and his fiancée Rebecca, who’s become
as close as a sister to me. Most importantly, I plan to spend the rest of my days—and
nights—with the man who has changed me for the better. Ben Morgan brought love and
laughter into my life. He respects me. He challenges me. He’s almost too good to
be true. I can’t wait to build a life and have a family with him.

    About the Writer

    Why did you choose to
    write about this character?
I thought it would be interesting to create a heroine who was
a writer as I am. It’s funny just how much we have in common as we try to research
and write our stories—even if we’re writing more than a hundred years apart. I’ve
always loved the name Maggie and saw her in my head for a long time. She was smart,
feisty, and talented, and I just loved her red hair! I simply had to wait till the
right story for her came along.
    Was there anything you
discovered about this character that was a surprise to you?
Maggie was much more vocal (in my head) than some of my characters
have been in the past. When I wanted to make Ben the dime novelist in my story,
she wouldn’t hear of it! She believed she had the talent and drive to be the writer—and
she was exactly right. That freed Ben up to become a gambler on the run, and it
made for a unique, stronger storyline.
    When you wrote about this
character, what made you the most happy? What made you the most sad?
I was always happy writing about when Maggie was experiencing
new things, especially her growing attraction to Ben. Maggie’s just as much a gambler
as Ben is. She will try anything and relish the opportunity she’s been given. It
was hard to allow her to let Ben go when Black Tex Lonnegan came to town to kill
him. Rationally, she knew he needed to leave to save his life . . . but giving him
up was like cutting away pieces of her heart and soul. That was difficult to write.
    Why do you write?
I am compelled to write. I feel I have so many stories to tell.
I want to bring the kind of pleasure to my readers that I’ve known as I’ve read
books over the years. I want readers to be entertained. To laugh aloud. To cry.
To feel they’ve discovered new friends.
    What other character from
this book do you want to write about? Care to tell us why?
I might try to write Marcus’s story one day. He’s such a terrific
older brother to Maggie. He’s a good friend to Frank. He’s a successful businessman.
    The US
was on the brink of change at this time in history, and it might be interesting
to see those changes through Marcus’s eyes. Another character that would be fun
to follow would be Tim, the teenager Marcus takes under his wing. To go from being
the son of a hotel desk clerk to helping develop a new town and a publishing empire?
Hmm…I’ll have to think about this one!
    A Game of Chance
    Is there anything you’d
like to say to your readers?
I just want to express my gratitude to those readers who have
bought my books and told me they’ve enjoyed my characters and their stories. That
puts a smile on my face.

How to Rope a Man: Dating Tips from the Texas Wildcat @AdrienneDeWolfe #RLFblog #western

    Texas Wildcat
Note from Adrienne deWolfe: Still pining for a date this weekend? No problem.
Sheep rancher Bailey McShane, the (aptly named) Texas Wildcat from Adrienne deWolfe’s
bestselling Western Historical Romance, is here to share her secrets for catching
    a mate!
    Howdy, gals! Bailey here.
Now don’t you be moping around the homestead ’cause some clueless
male didn’t ask you to a fandango. The week’s not over yet! I got plenty of experience
roping stud ponies – ‘specially the two-legged kind. So listen up.
Prissy Missies would have you believe that a real lady puts on
lacy pink frou-frou and totters around on stilts. Hogwash. No man worth having wants
his woman trussed up in a corset. Men like a gal who WIGGLES when she walks. You
ever see a ewe in a brassiere?
    I rest my case!
Now once you get the ram’s . . . er, I mean, the man’s attention,
don’t gush and giggle every time the fool opens his mouth. Teach that randy rascal
some respect! When Hank Rotterdam and his twin sons were after my ranch, here’s
how I set those cusses straight:
    Hank:
“Aw, c’mon, Bailey. Why don’t you forget about Nick and
marry Nate? Shoot, they look just the same. And they got the same equipment, if
    you know what I mean.”
    Me:
“I’ll keep that in mind, when I’m ready to raise hogs.”
You see that? The old skirt-chaser was so floored, he didn’t
even know which way was up!
Now here’s a sparkin’ tip for ya’ll. Girly punch and cucumber
sandwiches ain’t gonna fire up your man’s blood! You want some bull pawing the sod
to give your skirts a whirl? Then I got one word for you, amigas:
    MOONSHINE.
Serve it up by the barrel.
    Here’s how my 100 percent
all-beef male likes to tattle on me:
Little Miss Bo Peep was so sure of herself,
sitting over there with that mischievous smirk and that curl coiling so jauntily
on her forehead. Besides, how powerful could the moonshine be? Bailey had tossed
back a belt without batting an eye.
Zack tossed back his own shot and choked.
Fire burned a path from his gullet to his gut. He was half-convinced his ears started
smoking. It was all he could do not to cough and sputter as the busthead went down.
    Bailey thumped him helpfully between
the shoulder blades. “Good stuff, eh?”
He wheezed. “You sure there’s no
    rat poison in this?”
Yee-haw! Take it from me, gals. Tarantula juice gets the job
done! After a coupla swigs, Zack started stamping and pawing so hard, he scooped
me up in his arms, hauled me up a flight of stairs and . . .
Oops! Look at the time! Gotta mozy on down to the barn to get
    those merino sheep sheared.
But before I go, I’ll leave you with one final tip. And this
one’s worth its weight in chocolate, if you know what I mean.
Do you want a man to kiss you tonight? I’m not talking about
some namby-pamby buss on the cheek. I’m talking about a REAL man, grabbing a REAL
woman, and kissing the livin’ daylights outta her.
(Yeah, I figured you’d like that.)
Well, pay attention now. ‘Cause here’s how it’s done.
    Wild Texas Nights
    Texas
    Wildcat
    By Adrienne deWolfe
When the beautiful, hot-tempered Bailey McShane bursts into the
cattlemen’s saloon, waving her shotgun and accusing the cowboys of theft, simmering
    tempers start to boil.
Bailey wants restitution for the fence posts that some low-down
cowpokes burned to steal precious water from her land.
No self-respecting cattleman would be caught dead siding with
a sheep rancher, like Bailey–and yet Zack Rawlins, the youngest, elected president
of the Cattlemen’s Association, can’t resist this pint-sized wildcat with the big
    blue eyes.
    Adrienne DeWolfe
    With drought-stricken Bandera County
on the brink of range war, Zack faces political suicide if he can’t find a way to
mend fences between Bailey and his cattle-ranching neighbors. But what’s a cowboy
to do with an unpredictable woman who refuses to be tamed?

Interview: Donna Michaels author of Her Forever Cowboy @Donna_Michaels #RLFblog #ModernWestern

    Her Forever Cowboy

Title Her Forever Cowboy/Harland County Series/Book Four: Kevin

    Genre Contemporary Western
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Single mother, Shayla Ryan, longs to put down roots
to create a stable environment for her baby girl and her younger sister, but the
threat of her abusive, ex-con father finding them has made that almost impossible.
Her newest residence in Harland County, however, holds
a lot of appeal, especially in the form of a Casanova cowboy with eye-catching good
looks and easy charm. Those two qualities took her down the wrong road before, and
though the sexy cowboy interferes with her pulse, she can’t let her heart get in
the way of the safety of her family, or give it to someone who doesn’t believe in
    forever.
If there’s one thing software company vice president, Kevin Dalton, loves
more than puzzles, it’s women. Size, shape, race doesn’t matter as long as they
don’t want a relationship–he’s not looking to repeat the past, and more than happy
to remain single. Until two beautiful redheads drop him to his knees–one with her
cutie-pie smile, the other with her elbow. Too bad the elbow-toting beauty is both
hot and puzzling. A killer combination too strong to resist. And without realizing
it, the redheads slowly rewrite the code around his heart.
But when the danger from Shayla’s past shows up, can he rise to the challenge
to keep them safe…and really be what they need? A forever cowboy?

    Interview with Donna Michaels

    Why did you write this
    book?
I wrote Kevin’s story- Her Forever Cowboy, because it’s the fourth
    book in my Harland
    County series, and frankly,
Kevin demanded it. lol The Casanova cowboy has sat back and watched three of his
buddies get their own books and felt it was his turn.
    What is your favorite
    genre to read?
The very same I love to write, Romance through the H’s–Hot,
    Humorous & Heartwarming.
    What is your favorite
character from fiction (not including your own)?
My favorite character from fiction is Ty Garrison from Jill Shalvis’
Lucky In Love, her fourth book in her wonderful Lucky Harbor Series. I’m a sucker
for a tortured hero, and if he’s military to boot, all the better.
    Do you enjoy films and/or
TV shows? Which are you favorite?
Yes, both! Movies–I love romantic comedies, sci-fi, action,
fantasy, comedies, suspense, you name it, I love it. Favorites are many, but I’ll
try to narrow it down. LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring, Die Hard 3 With a Vengeance,
Two Weeks Notice, The Whole Nine Yards, and Frequency. As for TV shows, wow, again,
a lot. Love NCIS, Supernatural, Once Upon A Time, Faceoff, Ghost Hunters, Sherlock
    and Doctor Who!
    What are you working on
at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
I’m currently working on three books. The first is a novella
for The Wild Rose Press tentatively titled Cowboy Payback. It’s the sequel to Cowboy-Sexy
I released with them last year. This is former Marine Captain Brett Brennan’s story
on how he has to deal with the fallout of the practical joke he played on his Navy
SEAL twin Finn, telling everyone his brother was engaged to a female Marine. Now,
the tables are turned and Brett finds himself in a fake engagement to his beautiful
former corporal. The second book is the next one in my Harland County Series, Book
Five/Jace-Her Healing Cowboy. Jace is a doctor and also part of the Texas National
Guard. He has a great bedside manner, is happy to help his friends, but like any
soldier, he has his own healing to do, and a pretty visitor from Colorado dishes
just what he needs. And finally, I’m also working on the first book in a Harland County spin-off series-Citizen Soldier Series–titled
Wyne and Dine, about the brother of the heroine in the third Harland book–Her Uniform
Cowboy. Brandi’s brother Sgt. Benjamin Wyne will kick off the series by becoming
the first of four Wyne brothers to find the right woman.
    Please tell us about your
    latest book.
Computer programmer Kevin Dalton loves women, but avoids relationships
and getting personal. Until he meets a resilient single mother and her sweet baby
girl who find their way past the security around his heart. Shayla Ryan is tired
of running from her ex-con father and wants to stay in Harland County
to put down roots. Too bad there’s a combustible chemistry between her and the Casanova
cowboy. He doesn’t do relationships and she’s looking for forever.

    Author Bio

books are Romance through the H’s–Hot, Humorous & Heartwarming. The first three
books in her Harland County Series–Unruly cowboys and the women who tame them–
Her Fated Cowboy, Her Unbridled Cowboy, and Her Uniform Cowboy have each received
a Reviewer Top Pick from Night Owl Reviews. Her Unbridled Cowboy was #12 at Preditors
& Editors Reader Poll for Best Romance 2013. Her Uniform Cowboy was voted Best
