We’ve each lost loved ones to this killer. Thirty years ago when my father got cancer people were calling it “The Big C”, speaking about it in hushed voices ripe with trepidation and let’s face it, a sense of doom. He dies less than a month after he was diagnosed. By the time my mother passed away from ovarian cancer SEVEN years after they’d given her a one to two year prognosis, the tide was beginning t turn. Now drugs, new attitudes and protocols, and new outcomes are on the rise.Though I’ve lost many friends, even recently, to lung cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer and pancreatic cancer, these friends and family have lived WITH cancer. While doctors visits and treatments were a part of their lives, they didn’t stop living or doing the things that gave them joy. I miss them all terribly (Mary Amelia, Charlie, Mark, Earl and Cleo, and so many more) but the memory I have of each of them was strength, passion for life, and the way they put us one step closer to seeing the end of this illness. It’s power over our psyches has been diminished by the hope those who have come before us have left behind.
Hope is an integral part of beating cancer. My mother’s doctor said there was no reason she should have beat those odds. They credited her positive attitude. This is an accepted fact now– our will, our belief and our no quit attitudes will one day mean an end to cancer. There’s no way to express what a wonderful day that will be. I believe it will happen in my lifetime.
Please don’t let fear of the C-word keep you from getting screened. Early detection has meant the difference many times. And remember — We Will Not Quit until cancer is history.

The Alibi was inspired by my year in the Florida prison system, doing PR, not time.What is your favorite genre to read?
I love any book about World War II, especially thrillers.Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Gabriel Allon, an art restorer and an Israeli spy, a fictional character created by Daniel Silva.What are you working on at the moment?
I just finished a women’s fiction with elements of historical romance and suspense called The Siege: A Novel, set in current day Florence, Italy, and New York City and the Greek island of Crete during WW II. It is inspired by a true story.What would you do if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time—forced into the honeymoon suite with a man who wasn’t your husband while your hotel was under attack by terrorists? That’s how The Siege: A Novel, opens. When artist Theia Constas finds some vintage WW II photographs and love letters in a shoebox in her grandmother’s closet upon her death, she goes on a journey of self-discovery, where she finds love and realizes her passion through a link to her grandparents’ hidden past.

Please tell us about your latest book.
In The Alibi, Merritt Saxe, newly hired public relations specialist with the Florida prison system, answers an urgent plea from their division’s director, Willard Ware Baintree. Following his orders, she finds him in the apartment of his mistress, his bloody T-shirt and the mistress’s dead body convincing her the criminal justice superstar is himself a criminal. Zara West loves all things dark, scary, and heart-stopping as long as they lead to true love. Born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Zara spends winters in New York where the streets hum with life, summers in the Maritimes where the sea can be cruel, and the rest of the year anywhere inspiration for tales of suspense, mystery, and romance are plentiful.
Swept off her feet by her own Indiana Jones, Zara has followed sheep and goats up and down mountainsides in Greece, Crete, and Italy, been stranded on the banks of the Rhine with no money and one chocolate bar, and while she has never been kidnapped, she has been abandoned on an island in the middle of t wilderness for longer than she wants to remember.

What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?
The answer has to be home-made pizza. I have been making pizza every Friday since my children were toddlers. It got to be that all their friends and all our friends started showing up unexpectedly on Friday nights to have “Mom’s” pizza. I stiil make pizza once a week (Wednesdays now) and the kids and their buddies still come to dive in. My pizza secret – use half-cheddar cheese.
Who is your “book boyfriend” (that hottie you read about and drool over)?
Right now it has to be Jamie Fraser from Outlander. I loved him when I read Gabaldon’s series. But I just finished binge watching the last two seasons of Outlancer on Netflix so he’s come to life for me. The actor Sam Heughan was perfect for the part. My second favorite hottie is Nathaniel Boomer in Into the Wilderness. I never cared much for the heroine. But she sure lucked out in the amazing lover department.
Describe the perfect vacation.
My perfect vacation is to have no must dos and no job to worry about and just to be able to sit and write all day. I am pretty much having that now here at my cottage in the Martimes with a view of the sea. Lucky me.
Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.
My father made me a wooden gun that used a rubberband to shoot pieces of cardboard. Not a very girly toy, but I loved pretending to be the hero and sneaking up on imaginary villains and letting fly. I guess romantic suspense was in my blood even then.
What are your hobbies?
Reading is my main hobby. When I am not working or writing, I read. I read everything. I read biographies and histories, mysteries and thrillers, and scifi and fantasy, historical fiction and paranormal, and of course lots and lots of romance.

Please tell us about your latest book.

Karen Cino is a multi-published author of eight novels, two novellas and a book of poems and has been writing since she was fourteen years old. She started her career by writing poetry, short stories and writing article for her high school newspaper.
