Known as El Toro, street artist Alba Vargas is on the cusp of fame and fortune. Winner of a prestigious award, she is the toast of the New York City art scene. Then the crime boss kidnaps Toro’s younger brother, Hanger. Blaming himself, Pharaoh sets out to rescue him, resolving to do one good thing in his life. But Toro has her own desperate plan to save her brother—one that will not only break Pharaoh’s heart—but will also destroy every hope and dream she has ever had.
Why did you write this book?
The hero and heroine of Within the Skin were secondary characters in Books 1 and 2 of the Skin Quartet. But my readers loved them so much that they asked if they could have their own love story. So in book 3, Toro and Pharaoh are now all grown up and going their separate ways until Toro’s younger brother is kidnapped and they have to work together to save him. Book 4 which is in press will be the younger brother’s love story.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I am an eclectic reader. I read every kind of book there is. However, my favorite books are page-turners with lots of action or mystery or secrets and hopefully, a happy or satisfying ending. That means I read a lot of romantic suspense. If anyone is curious about my reading, I regularly post book reviews on Goodreads and on my blog.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
This is very hard for me to answer because if I don’t fall in love with at least one character in a book, I have a hard time reading it. I guess my current favorite is the hero of Jaima Fixen’s Incognito, Alistair who despite a missing leg and a wry sense of humor, is a true hero. I especially like that he admits fear, but then does the brave thing.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am in the midst of putting the finishing touches on a Christmas story from my newsletter subscribers. My Facebook Fan Club suggested that the main heroine and hero in the story be a carpenter and a shepherd which made writing it a bit of a challenge. But I think they will love the resulting love story.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
Book 4 in the Skin Quartet series is under contract and in the editing stage. I am hoping to see in in print early next year. Then I have a series of contemporary eco-romances I am working on set in Nova Scotia. Although that might be far away from the Brooklyn setting of the Skin Quartet series, it’s really not. Cold cuts, lasagna, beef stew with lots of sauce, roasted potatoes and Tiramisú.
What is your go-to meal when you dine out?
Ribs. I have to admit I’m a bit of a food snob, with me being Italian and all that, so I usually eat at home. But ribs. Sweet Jesus, no-one makes ribs like you guys do. And I can start a discussion on how your meat tastes better at any given time.
Who is your “book boyfriend” (that hottie you read about and drool over)?
Nora Roberts. The MacKade Brothers. Shane. Yep, him. Still him. Can’t get over that man.
Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.
It wasn’t a toy as much as a place and a game. I grew up on a farm, lots of fields. I loved playing treasure hunt, so I would hide something somewhere (the asparagus rows were the best), draw the map and look for it and dig it out. Man, my grandfather was NOT happy about that…
When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?
It depends on what I need. Sometimes I need a laugh and I look for a nice comedy. Other time I get stuck with some paranormal weirdo (I was stuck on dragons for some time, then angels, then back to vampires…). Other time I need adventure and I go for romantic suspense. I watched the Little Mermaid countless times with my daughter and always wonder what it would be like if there was a lot more sizzle and a serial killer.

Amberlynn from one of Terry Brooks books. I name my daughter after her.

Our children have begun their own adventures, and just as I got into the swing of empty nest, my grandson came to live with us. Now I’m doing six again… they argue everything just case you forgot. For Contemporary Heroes:
It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?
Aidan would go to his studio and work on some custom piece. He doesn’t care much for those, they don’t ‘speak’ to him, but he loves the act of sculpting and there’s always some deadline he wants to meet.
What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?
Boston Cream Doughnuts, a box of six, that he would wolf up in one go and drawn down with Irish Black tea. He swears the Irish tea tastes different than regular Breakfast tea. I tried both, and I think the difference is in his head but please, don’t tell him I said that much. We fought enough on the matter and frankly, I don’t care.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
Jeans and T-shirt, the state of which goes from normal (for day-to-day life) to things so old and worn out they are slightly better than old rags (when he works).
Does he know how to fix things?
Yes. Now, whether or not he does fix them, it’s a different matter. If he likes it (truck, fishing gears, everything related to his work) sure, he’s on it. Boring stuff like a leaking faucet or a broken garbage disposal? Forget it. He’ll pay someone to do it.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
He’s great with kids, a fact that had left everyone, Aidan included, surprised. He’d play with the kid, entertain him or her.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
Aidan doesn’t do many mornings, he’s not one for routine. He’d sleep when tired, get up when he’s done. Now, with Summer and Chloe, he’s a little more civilized and follows the girl’s rhythms (unless he’s working on a piece). He’s… normal. Not really grumpy or anything. Well, not grumpiER than usual.
Can he use chopsticks?
Yes.
Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?
He does, black, but black tea is more his thing.
Beard or clean-shaven?
Five-o-clock shadow going on unshaved, which is different than having a beard. He simply shaves when he wants to.

A tattoo over his heart, an Irish cross.

Personal vehicle.

My books are based on events and places I have experienced. When I was in a jewelry store that had a big picture window near the sidewalk, I wondered what if the place was robbed. That sparked the idea for The Silver and Gold Deception.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
I have always made up stories in my head even as a small child. Now I get to put them on paper and share them with the world.

I worked for the state of Maryland for thirty years. The year after I retired, I wrote my first book.
