In one hundred and fifty years, Blake’s Folly, a silver boomtown notorious for its brothels, scarlet ladies, silver barons, speakeasies, and divorce ranches, has become a semi-ghost town. Although the old Mizpah Saloon is still in business, its upper floor is sheathed in dust. But in a room at a long corridor’s end, an adventurer, a beautiful dance girl, and a rejected wife were once caught in a love triangle, and their secret has touched three generations.
Why did you write this book?
Because I’m an historian as well as a storyteller, I wanted to chart the romance possibilities of a former silver boomtown that has become a semi-ghost town. I also liked the idea of transporting readers away from their everyday reality and carrying them to a place they don’t know. Of course, in all of my books, I also want to underline how necessary it is to stay curious about the past.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I read everything from creative non-fiction to romance and history. Reading is such a pleasure and people are writing marvelous things in all genres, so why would I restrict myself to one?
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Reasonable (yet not humorless) Flora Post from Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m about to start a memoir of a small village in France. At the moment, I have my nose stuck in archives.

Two other re-releases that have Blake’s Folly as their setting: Desert Rose and All About Charming Alice.

Writer, photographer, social critical artist, musician, and occasional actress, J Arlene Culiner, was born in New York and raised in Toronto. What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?
For this, I have to admit to loving food. I’m not one of those people who eat to live, I enjoy a good meal. My family and (lucky me!) hubby’s family always thought a meal was the way to entertain others and to celebrate being together. So you see why it’s hard to choose my favorite meal. My dad used to grill fish on an outdoor hibachi and make hush puppies. We’d pile up our paper plates and eat with our fingers on the screened-in porch (Virginia + mosquitoes = UGH!). My mother-in-law fried the best chicken and we’d eat in the dining room wearing our Sunday best clothes with her wedding crystal and china and sterling silverware. But (and now I’m getting to it) I think my favorite down-home meal is grilled (or even fried) pork chops, with sweet potatoes and cheesy broccoli. Yum!
What is your go-to meal when you dine out?
Cheeseburgers. It has always been so. When I was little, a friend of my grandmothers took us to Delmonico’s in San Francisco. I asked for a cheeseburger. My grandmother was appalled, and her friend just laughed. (I got a cheeseburger.) Nowadays, I might jack it up a bit with mushrooms and Swiss or with bacon, but even without all the extras, my choice is the same.
Who is your “book boyfriend” (that hottie you read about and drool over)?
Jamie Fraser from Outlander. Is there another man who could pull you through time? I don’t think so.
Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.
I had a stuffed monkey as a young child. It had plastic face and a strap of elastic on its head that I used to bounce it over and over. And over. I dragged the darn thing everywhere I went. I’m sure Mom was sick of it by the time I outgrew it, but when we went through her things last year when she died, that stupid monkey was tucked away safely with her belongings.
When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?
I will read most anything. I love courtroom dramas and thrillers. Romantic suspense is great. This will make me sound shallow, but I don’t often read non-fiction, though what I do read of it I’ve really liked. Usually historical or something about exploring. But the most I read is romance, of one form or another.

What is the overall theme in this series?
Think of PSY-IV Teams as cross between NCIS and X-Men. It’s a team of unique ex-military operatives with psychic abilities who used their unusual skills to complete their missions.

Hunted by the Past is the initial introduction to the team with Cyn and Kayden’s story.
Then it’s all about Tag and Risia’s journey from frenemies to lovers in Touched by Fate.
Once you survive that mission, it’s on to Wolf’s protection detail for Melly, and then onto the unforgettable adventures of Bishop and Megan. Then, the fifth tale is the long-awaited team up of Jinx and Rabbit.
What did you like best about writing this series?
Getting a chance to concentrate on each different couple is a blast. Not only is there a bunch of creative “what-if’s” to explore with their various psychic abilities, some of my research requires searches that I know for a fact have landed my name on a watch list somewhere. This series has taken unexpected turns because, while I think I know where the character is going to go, they get off on turning my expectations, and their lives, on end with no warning.
What other books (not in this series, have you written?)
I have three other series out – a 4 book, completed Post-Apocalyptic Romance series called Fate’s Vultures, that starts with Lying in Ruins. Think end of the world cowboys meets sexy MC. Available at all retailers.
A completed 3 book Urban Fantasy series called Arcane Transporter that follows Rory Costas through the magical mayhem that arises when powerful Mystics rule like mob families, and it all starts with Grave Cargo. Currently available in Kindle Unlimited, but will be moving to all retailers in Summer 2022.
Then I have my five book ongoing Urban Fantasy / Paranormal Romance series, the Kyn Kronicles that kicks off with Shadow’s Edge. The sixth and final book in this Supernatural meets Underworld series, Shadow’s Fall, will be out in July 2022. It, too, is currently available in Kindle Unlimited, but plans are to move the entire series to all retailers in late 2022.

How many books do you plan for the series?
There are six books in the initial arc, and I say “initial arc” because I expected to eventually return to the Kyn with more books as there are more than enough characters to steal the spotlight.
How many books are completed?
Six, but Shadow’s Fall will release initially into Kindle Unlimited in July 2022 because the series spent a couple years in KU and I don’t want to leave those readers hanging. It will only be in for 90 days, then it will join the other five books at all retailers in October 2022.
What characters are the main stars in your series?
This was my first series, so I didn’t do the traditional one couple through the whole series. Shadow’s Edge, Shadow’s Soul and Shadow’s Fall all center on Raine McCord and Gavin Durand. Shadow’s Moon is Raine’s best friend, Xander’s story as she deals with her reluctant mate and alpha, Warrick. Shadow’s Curse is Natasha’s time to shine as she locks horns with Darius, and Shadow’s Dream gives us a chance to find out Cheveyo’s heart-breaking history as he reconnects with his one and only, Tala.
What is the overall theme in this series?
The supernatural race knowns as the Kyn have spent centuries hiding in the shadows, but human curiosity and rise of technology is forcing the Kyn to step into light of the mortal world. But what happens when those who populate fairy tales turn out to be all too real?

What did you like best about writing this series?
It was the first series I ever wrote, so I had a blast with the world creation, but in doing so, I broke some rules that made it challenging later on when I needed things to come together.
