Social justice writer and activist Regina Kent is usually cautious and savvy. Yet, unable to resist her attraction to the handsome Simon, she plunges into a torrid affair, knowing that she chances angering big brother and her less tolerant followers, many of whom will not accept that one of their most popular pro-Black bloggers is dating an Asian man.
As their clandestine romance evolves, Simon and Regina fall deeper in love. Making sure that things stay between them becomes progressively impossible, and neither knows how much longer they can keep Marcus in the dark and the world at bay.
Why did you write this book?I had a few reasons for writing My Way to You, the primary one being that I wanted to write a romance centering what I gleaned as the increasing lines of solidarity between Blacks and Asians in the country. I also wanted to highlight the growing Black Woman-Asian Man (BWAM) subculture, where members of two social groups deemed less desirable are learning to appreciate each other as love matches.
Black women and Asian men have to tackle with a contrived lack of appeal stemming from stereotypes masculinizing one and feminizing the other. My Way to You and other romances centering BWAM love interests pushes back against that and offers representation for couples in similar relationships as well as interracial couples in general.
What is your favorite genre to read?
Oh, romance, romance, and then—romance. I became hooked on it as a teenager and never looked back. When I was presented with a choice of genre to study for my master’s thesis, I selected romance. I think the genre is integral to revealing and influencing how people navigate a quintessential human emotion eros love.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
My favorite fictional character is Sofia in The Color Purple by Alice Walker. She’s an amazingly-strong character that shows the layers of racism and sexism that Black American women encounter from Black men as well as White men and women.
Sofia constantly fights against people’s attempts to degrade and dehumanize her. She paid for her quest for dignity and humanity with her physical well-being and liberty, which is also in jeopardy for real Black women daring to do the same. Even though she was crushed by society, her spirit wasn’t. Her raising like a phoenix from the ashes after years of torment is the profoundest moment in literary history.
What are you working on at the moment?
I have a couple of projects that require different styles of writing. I am working on Sweet Love, Bitter Fruit, book two of the Brothers in Law romance series. The story features Marcus and Toni from My Way to You (book one) and their struggles to keep their perfect marriage from falling apart.
I am also writing an essay about African American Muslim romance to be added to an anthology on American Muslim popular culture as well as a short story for an American Muslim story collection. Although it can be demanding, I love the different directions my writing takes me.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
I plan to have books two and three of the Brothers in Law series ready for readers to dive into.
Hopefully, readers will get to enjoy Sweet Love, Bitter Fruit in early 2019. After that, there will be Building on Broken Dreams (book three), my first Muslim romance in the series. It features a steamy interracial couple—Adam Kane and Maryam Avery—as they build a beautiful life together that is threatened to be torn down by Maryam’s past.Where to buy My Way to You

A Romance for Christmas is my ninth book. All but one of the others is science fiction. This story is a one-off for me, but it’s a favorite.

Actually, this one came as a surprise — I finished it in one day. It’s a short, quick read.
you did research for this book?
I did. I looked up info about police work.

No pets, but there is a very important dolly.

A Romance for Christmas is contemporary, sweet, and holiday all in one.
you speak more than one language?
Not yet, but I’m learning Russian.
you grew up where you live now?
No. I moved all over the US and even Central America (as a child).
you love to read?
Yes! More than one book a week most of the year. I especially love historical romance, science fiction, and non-fiction topics like archaeology and writing.
you are never late?
If I said yes, my kids would laugh me out of town.
you love pizza?
Almost any kind, but hold the sausage, green peppers and anchovies. Layer on the pepperoni — it’s hard to give me too much of that. I could eat pizza every day. Or nachos. Yum.
you love sushi?
I do. I have a few favorites, but especially veggie. Also smoked salmon.
you have a pet?
No, but I will be living next door to someone with two dogs once I move in just under a month. I’ve already made friends with them and the dogs. Can’t wait to get settled in.Where to buy A Romance for Christmas

My inspiration for this novella came from thinking about refugees who must literally walk away from their ruined homes and into the unknown. It tells the story of the young hero, Myles. He’s the leader of a band of survivors from a terrible war. They are pursued by slave hunters.

Myles and his people are now bereft of their ancient Kadolia magic. Their Elders say that the magic came from their homeland and that it is gone forever. What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?
Although it’s a bunch of work to prepare, I love doing a fish fry with fish that the family has caught, especially bluegill because they are available in quantity and truly delicious.
Describe the perfect vacation.
My perfect vacation reveals my introversion. I would love to go to a writer’s retreat in a secluded natural settings. All meals would be prepared for me, and I would have my own room. My family is NOT there, but I might like to have my dog. I won’t have to do a single thing except sleep, write, and take walks. My perfect vacation with the family would be the same thing: full-service setting where I perform no menial labor whatsoever.
What are your hobbies?
I grow fruit and vegetables. I raise and breed French angora wool rabbits. I’ve been learning to spin wool, so that’s a newer hobby for me. I bake pies.
When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?
I read all manner of books. I’ve always got my eye out for a good fantasy or sci fi, but I tend to read nonfiction. I like to read about hunting, survival, memoirs, true crime, psychology, politics, demographics, and history. Two of my most recent reads were American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon by Steven Rinella and Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain.
What kinds of things do you read when you’re researching a new book?
Research materials vary. I might be looking for details to make elements in a story feel authentic. Like I’ll look up human anatomy to determine wounds I can deliver that someone could conceivable heal from. I’ll read things about shamanism, witchcraft, and various mythology. I seek out materials for character research too because I want insights into human experiences. Two of my novels had elements that dealt with child soldiers, so I read articles about that. For my historical fantasies, I’ve focused a lot on clothing, art, religion, and politics.Where to buy Refugee Trail

I was born in Michigan in 1972 and grew up in Mount Pleasant. It’s called the “Mountain Town” but there is no mountain and it’s debatable about whether it’s pleasant. They say it’s a party town and based on extensive research as a young adult I can concur.
Because I always had the childhood fantasy of running away and joining the circus, I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1995 and lived there until 1997. Those who only stay a week are wimps, but I will say that it’s the second year in Vegas that wears you down. Then I realized the pioneers were trying to get to California, so I moved to Chico, in Northern California and lived there until 2009.
In 2000, I earned a journalism degree from California State University, Chico with the conscious ambition of becoming a fiction writer. With the rapid demise of the newspaper industry and journalism in general, novelist is not such a daft pursuit after all. It’s not like I’m actually going to get a job that values my education. Luckily I’m cursed with the impulse to write in a popular yet competitive genre.
My wandering has circled back and I’m currently residing in Battle Creek, Michigan, and for now my existence within the post-apocalyptic Rust Belt is suitably fascinating.

Why did you write this book?
Avenging the Earl’s Lady is the final book in the Sons of the Spy Lord Series. After all his matchmaking and meddling, I decided the spy lord needed his own romance!
What is your favorite genre to read?
I enjoy historical romance, but I also like suspense and historical adventure stories.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
I like the delightfully impossible Rupert Carsington, the hero of Mr. Impossible, by Loretta Chase.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on a novella-length story for release in 2019. It will tie in with my series and includes a haunted house, a hound of hell, and a hero with a hidden identity.
