The Elf Queen by Lyndi Alexander

    Genre: Fantasy
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG
At her friend’s coaxing, Jelani tries on a glass slipper left lying on the sidewalk. When she steps into the shoe, it shatters, cutting her foot. As blood trickles to the pavement and mingles with the broken glass, dozens of two-inch high creatures emerge and then scurry away into the shadows. Soon she is approached by two mysterious and handsome men claiming to be elves who need her help to rescue their queen. More revelations come, threatening to unravel the life of this sassy barista from Missoula, Montana. Jelani must learn to accept that elves are real and living in the forests of the Bitterroot Mountains.
What species/races of people are in your book?
    Humans and elves

    Language and Culture

In the culture of your story world, what is different from ours?
Sadly, it is what makes them the same that becomes more important. Jealousy, strife and bad family dynamics are behind the schism which led to the state of the elven world at the time this story takes place. Brother against sister, sons against fathers—the clan must wrestle with these before they can move forward.
What special laws are important to your story world?
The clan comes from a place of connection to the land (which is why the elves will work openly with ELF, the Earth Liberation Front, considered ecoterrorists by the FBI). They draw strength and energy from earth centers, and return it to the earth once they are gone. Years past, they had a balanced symbiosis with the land, and they must return to this balance if they are to survive.

    Story Setting

Describe one of the worlds where your story takes place.
The Clan Elves of the Bitterroot live side by side with the people and animals of the northwest Montana lands. Most of the time they pass unnoticed, as do their homes, wrought by magic in the forest, up in the trees, like gossamer floors and walls, because the human world moves so quickly and remains self-absorbed. Once a mage of the clan teaches a human how to “see what is right in front of them, then this shadowy world can be seen.
    What makes this world unique?
Their needs are not great, so they can generate everything they need with their own magic. For example, when mage Daven Talvi constructs a home for Jelani inside a large tree trunk, she finds that space is different inside a spelled place. Her nerdy friends compare it to the Tardis—much bigger on the inside than outside.
Tell us about the age of the culture in your story, i.e., are the people part of an ancient civilization, a newly formed group within an established culture, pioneer colonists, etc.
The civilization goes back to the time of the Native Americans. In those earliest days, elves and humans had much the same way of life and they honored the same things. As humans “matured”, the two cultures grew apart, and the elves began keeping to themselves and moving deeper into the forests. This is why the older forests are cherished grounds for them.
What food or drink is available to your characters?
Whatever they can find in the woods, of course. But as the elves interact with the humans in the story, they do get to experience some more unusual fare like coffee and eggs with brains.

    Character Physiology

What are the physical characteristics of the race/species of your main characters?
They appear very much as humans. In fact, until they use their powers, one might see them as anyone else who blends into the background.
What physical differences exist in the way your characters communicate (i.e., telepathy, empathic abilities, etc.) with each other?
The elves are telepathic with others of their own kind. Each elf also has a certain specialty power that helps them contribute to the clan, i.e. ability to control water, fire, wind, etc.

    Sharing World Building Expertise

Please give us three tips you find helpful when creating a story world:
Being able to visualize your setting provides myriad details you can use to make the narrative strong. I visited the area north of Missoula several times in order to secure these details—the deep forests, the gray mountains, the waterways of the area. Even the odd tree formations at the Montana Vortex came in useful in The Elf Guardian.
Don’t hold back on your details. They are what make your story come to life.
Think about the language differences for time, for food, etc. Even on our own planet we don’t all use meters or inches—wouldn’t those of a different world have different words for such things? Then you have to use them in a way that it’s clear what they mean to someone reading in American English.
When you researched for your story setting, what kinds of things did you learn?
When I wrote this book, it was the first time I’d ever learned about ecoterrorism. Strangely, this brand of terrorist is trying to save the forests by preventing development of old forest lands. Some are fairly harmless, like those who sit in trees to keep loggers from taking them down. Others put spikes in trees to deter loggers from using their equipment. Others, more violent in nature, actually blow things up to get their message across.
What things should writers avoid when building a science fiction world?
    Making it too ordinary.

    Sonder Village by Taylor Hobbs

    Genre: Fantasy Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13
Abandoned for over a hundred years, a small village in northern Spain enchants Remy into purchasing what could be the worst real estate investment of all time. It is located near the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage path renowned for miracles, and the disgraced painter waits for her own revelation while rebuilding the ruins of her village and her life. But this property holds dangerous secrets dating back to a Galician military coup in 1846 that refuse to stay buried.
Bieito is a local fisherman married to the sea, but he becomes enamored with the newly-arrived American artist. His decision to pursue Remy—when he can find her—upsets history’s delicate balance and endangers his family.
Engulfed in a past that no one else can see, Remy must find who—or what—is really in control of her fate, and if she can survive being torn between two worlds.
What was your first published book?
Cloaked was my first published book, also a fantasy romance novel available through The Wild Rose Press. It is about Charlotte, a criminal-in-training, who yearns to crack her mentor’s guarded façade but is unprepared to confront his dark past. As her sense of right and wrong blurs, she discovers just how far she will go for him and the sacrifices he requires. If you want to know more, here is the link: https://www.thewildrosepress.com/books/cloaked
Tell us about your writing space or home office.
I’m so excited to share a peek into our quirky liveaboard lifestyle with you all today. This is my writing space! I live on a 38-ft sailboat. All I need is my computer up in the cockpit and I can write. I’ll let you in on a secret: the key is to not be too comfortable when writing. The bench cushions are kind of hard, and sometimes the weather is challenging, but when I am here I guarantee that I’m using my time efficiently. In an air-conditioned office, I would find a million excuses not to draft my 1,000 words for the day. Plus, I have incredible views to inspire me.
    Anything special about your space?
Do It Write: Where Taylor Hobbs writes @tayhobbit #RLFblog #timetravel #wanderlustThe beautiful thing about writing on a sailboat is that my view can change. No matter where I go in the world, my cockpit writing space will remain the same, but there will always be a new and exciting adventure whenever I look up. Having this flexibility helps me be more creative with my ideas and characters. I am more willing to think outside the box when both my mind and body can wander freely.
What would like to change about your home office?
Currently, our home base is in North Carolina, but someday soon I hope to write a novel while looking out over crystal clear Caribbean waters, or under the moonlight while on watch during an Atlantic Ocean crossing. Every time my view from my writing space changes, I will have grown as a person and as a writer. “Thought is the wind, knowledge the sail, and mankind the vessel.” –Augustus Hare.
    Are you a writing mom/dad?
I am a writing mom! I have a beautiful daughter who is about a year and a half old. I finished the first draft of Sonder Village three weeks before I went into labor. I knew if I didn’t finish it before she got here, it would be too hard to come back to.
How do you juggle writing and family?
I’m still working that one out! I’m a stay-at-home mom, so I can only write when my toddler is asleep. I’m sure it will get easier as she gets older and more independent, but right now I am squeezing the productive minutes in whenever I can. It helps that my husband is incredibly supportive and encouraging. He knows writing time is sacred!
What’s the last book about writing that you read?
It was called Scratch: Writers, Money, and the Art of Making a Living by Manjula Martin. It is a series of interviews and essays from established and rising authors about how creative people make money. Some big-name contributors include Cheryl Strayed, Nick Hornby, and Jennifer Weiner. It was very eye-opening and showed that everyone’s journey and definition of success is unique!

Refugee Trail by Tracy Falbe @tracyfalbe #RLFblog #fantasyTracy Falbe, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

    Refugee Trail by Tracy Falbe

My inspiration for this novella came from thinking about refugees who must literally walk away from their ruined homes and into the unknown. It tells the story of the young hero, Myles. He’s the leader of a band of survivors from a terrible war. They are pursued by slave hunters.
    Genre: Fantasy
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13
Myles and his people are now bereft of their ancient Kadolia magic. Their Elders say that the magic came from their homeland and that it is gone forever. They are scrambling desperately through badlands to stay ahead of Lasher slave hunters when a faction of survivors wants to turn back and surrender. Annihilation looms until Myles senses the return of his power.
What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?
Although it’s a bunch of work to prepare, I love doing a fish fry with fish that the family has caught, especially bluegill because they are available in quantity and truly delicious.
    Describe the perfect vacation.
My perfect vacation reveals my introversion. I would love to go to a writer’s retreat in a secluded natural settings. All meals would be prepared for me, and I would have my own room. My family is NOT there, but I might like to have my dog. I won’t have to do a single thing except sleep, write, and take walks. My perfect vacation with the family would be the same thing: full-service setting where I perform no menial labor whatsoever.
    What are your hobbies?
I grow fruit and vegetables. I raise and breed French angora wool rabbits. I’ve been learning to spin wool, so that’s a newer hobby for me. I bake pies.
When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?
I read all manner of books. I’ve always got my eye out for a good fantasy or sci fi, but I tend to read nonfiction. I like to read about hunting, survival, memoirs, true crime, psychology, politics, demographics, and history. Two of my most recent reads were American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon by Steven Rinella and Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain.
What kinds of things do you read when you’re researching a new book?
Research materials vary. I might be looking for details to make elements in a story feel authentic. Like I’ll look up human anatomy to determine wounds I can deliver that someone could conceivable heal from. I’ll read things about shamanism, witchcraft, and various mythology. I seek out materials for character research too because I want insights into human experiences. Two of my novels had elements that dealt with child soldiers, so I read articles about that. For my historical fantasies, I’ve focused a lot on clothing, art, religion, and politics.

I was born in Michigan in 1972 and grew up in Mount Pleasant. It’s called the “Mountain Town” but there is no mountain and it’s debatable about whether it’s pleasant. They say it’s a party town and based on extensive research as a young adult I can concur.
Because I always had the childhood fantasy of running away and joining the circus, I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1995 and lived there until 1997. Those who only stay a week are wimps, but I will say that it’s the second year in Vegas that wears you down. Then I realized the pioneers were trying to get to California, so I moved to Chico, in Northern California and lived there until 2009.
In 2000, I earned a journalism degree from California State University, Chico with the conscious ambition of becoming a fiction writer. With the rapid demise of the newspaper industry and journalism in general, novelist is not such a daft pursuit after all. It’s not like I’m actually going to get a job that values my education. Luckily I’m cursed with the impulse to write in a popular yet competitive genre.
My wandering has circled back and I’m currently residing in Battle Creek, Michigan, and for now my existence within the post-apocalyptic Rust Belt is suitably fascinating.

The Raven Witch of Corfu, Episode 1 by Effrosyni Moschoudi @FrostieMoss #RLFblog #NewRelease #fantasyromanceEffrosyni Moschoudi, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

The Raven Witch of Corfu – episode 1 by Effrosyni Moschoudi

    Genre Fantasy romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG
A terrible evil lurks in the mountain…
Lizzie is not your average tourist. She may have just arrived on the idyllic Greek island of Corfu, but her mind is not on having a good time. Far from it, Lizzie has a daunting task to undertake: to claim back her twin brother who was kidnapped twenty years earlier on her previous visit. In a cave. By an evil witch.
When Lizzie sees her brother again, she receives the shock of her life. The witch has tricked her and won’t let them be…
Lizzie does her best to help her brother and do the witch’s bidding, too afraid of losing him again. New friends help them adjust and have some fun, and then love comes into her life to bring new hope. For the first time, it seems possible to fight off the witch. All she has to do now is trust enough…
Will she succeed? Will Corfu ever be again the perfect paradise she once knew?
“It’s a step up from Mills and Boon – much more Mary Stewart than Barbara Cartland, with a bit of Gothic horror and Harry Potter-esque magic in the mix. And it’s certainly a page-turner.” ~Hilary Whitton Paipeti, author of In the Footsteps of Lawrence Durrell and Gerald Durrell in Corfu”
This highly imaginative Greek fantasy romance will intrigue and uplift you, making it feel like you’re on the island, experiencing it all with your senses. It is also guaranteed to leave you longing for a visit to your closest Greek restaurant!
Why did you write this book?
The Corfiot village of Messonghi, where the book is set, is one of my favorite places. Tiny, quaint and evergreen, it seems like paradise on earth. I also have a strange affinity for the pyramid-shaped mountain that’s part of its coastal view. The mountain also featured in the first romance I wrote, The Ebb. In The Raven Witch of Corfu it is the place that hides the secret of the cave and the evil deeds of Phoni, the witch. It was my love for Messonghi that inspired the story one summer morning as I sat on the beach there and gazed at the mountain absentmindedly, as I often like to do. I have many readers, Brits mostly, who adore this part of the world like I do. I guess I wrote the book to please them, the way it pleases me to read it, now that it’s complete. It brings back the bliss of being there during the summer in sparkling colors…
What is your favorite genre to read?
I enjoy many different genres but if I had to pick one, I’d say paranormal stories with ghosts.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Froddo from The Lord of the Rings, which is one of my favorite books. That little guy didn’t stop at anything to protect what he loves. His story is very powerful and resonates deeply in me.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m not writing anything new yet, as I’ve literally just finished working on this new release. But I am already plotting my next novel in my head and hope to start writing soon. It’s a romance set in Greece, probably another romantic comedy as I really enjoyed writing The Amulet which is in that same genre.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
I hope to publish two books late next year, both romances, and knowing me, they’ll probably involve a ghost, a Greek god, an angel or something whimsical like that. I think the world is magical, if only we believe it to be so, so can’t help adding to my creative mix a generous sprinkle of fairy dust
Thank you so much for this opportunity to present my new book to your readers, Kayelle! The Raven Witch of Corfu is published in 4 kindle episodes. The paperback will follow soon.
