and romance involving outdoor adventures and Southwestern landscapes. The Mad
Monk’s Treasure follows the hunt for a long-lost treasure in the New Mexico
desert. In The Dead Man’s Treasure, estranged relatives compete to reach a
buried treasure by following a series of complex clues. In Counterfeits, stolen
Rembrandt paintings bring danger to a small New Mexico town. Whispers in the
Dark features archaeology and intrigue among ancient Southwest ruins. What We
Found is a mystery with strong romantic elements about a young woman who finds
a murder victim in the woods.
If you love Mary Stewart, Barbara
Michaels, or Terry Odell, try Kris Bock’s stories of treasure hunting,
archaeology and intrigue, and art theft in New Mexico. Read excerpts at www.krisbock.com or visit her Amazon page.
What is your go-to meal
when you dine out?
I live in a small New Mexico town where we have fast food
and Mexican/New Mexican food. While there’s something to be said for green
chili chicken enchilada casserole
(or a good pizza), when I get to the
“big city” – Albuquerque – I want something different. Indian, sushi,
or Thai are usually my top choices.
What’s your favorite hashtag
to watch on Twitter?
Although I’m not a scientist, many of my friends are, and I
do science writing for children (writing as Chris Eboch). I love great stories
about women in science, so I’ve been enjoying both the humor and the attention
given to scientific women by #distractinglysexy
What are your hobbies?
I like hiking, rock
climbing, and watching the sunset from the patio. My home office looks out on
nature, complete with distracting wildlife such as hummingbirds, roadrunners
and foxes. My BFA in photography is used mainly to show Facebook friends how
lovely the Southwest is. It’s a good thing I like outdoor activities, because
here “nightlife” means watching the bats fly out, and then
stargazing. On a dark night, you can see the Milky Way streaked across the sky.
When you read for pleasure,
what kind of books do you choose?
I prefer romantic suspense that is on the adventurous rather
than violent end of the spectrum as well. Mary Stewart is my role model, and my
biggest compliment was having one of my books compared to hers. I also like
mysteries if they aren’t too gory. I enjoy historical romance, because I don’t
write it. It’s easier to turn off the writer brain and enjoy the story. I write
for children as Chris Eboch, so I read a lot of middle grade novels (for ages 9
to 12). For those, I like fantasy and adventure stories. The dozen books I have
out from the library right now include mystery, romance, fantasy and humor, for
children and adults.
What kinds of things do
you read when you’re researching a new book?
I’ve been working on a treasure hunting series (so far The
Mad Monk’s Treasure and The Dead Man’s Treasure), so I’ve been reading about
real-life lost treasures of the Southwest. Bandits hid treasure and got killed
before reclaiming it. Travelers got lost or attacked or had to abandon their
trunks in the desert or mountains. Miners kept their gold mines top secret.
With all the stories, you might think treasure was hidden in every cave and
crevice. Many people today are still looking for those treasures. The stories
provide lots of fodder for novels. (Learn more at http://swarmchairtraveler.blogspot.com/search/label/treasure%20hunting).
