Read The Guy from the Park the new #SweetRomance by Birdie Song @birdiesong8 #RLFblog #MulticulturalRomanceLet’s get serious. Would you go out with a random stranger you met at a park? Neither would I… But the heroine of Birdie Song’s latest novelette, The Guy from the Park, is reconsidering her options. And you know, what? I don’t blame her.

Birdie, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about The Guy from the Park.

The Guy from the Park by Birdie Song

Genre Sweet Multicultural Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG-13

Summer days and new beginnings.

Off the back of a bad breakup, Sabrina Chen is getting her act together. But reinventing yourself isn’t easy at twenty-four, especially when you don’t know who you are. For starters, does she want to be the kind of person who fancies that grumpy random guy from the park? Daniel Ryce certainly doesn’t seem like vision board material, but since when does life go according to plan?

The Guy from the Park is a short and sweet “meet ugly” story, set in the world of Somerville Downs.

Why did you write this book?

When you only see a person in short bursts in the same place, you only have fleeting chances to get to know them and to let them get to know you. People naturally fill in the blanks with their own prejudices, assumptions and projections, which can lead to all sorts of dramas as well as missed opportunities.

I wanted to explore how two complete strangers might develop a mutual attraction in such circumstances. What forces in their own lives compel them toward each other, and what is it about who they are at the time that enable them to keep an open mind? Most importantly, how do they overcome their differences and find an HEA? (Or, rather, an HFN since this is a novelette about new beginnings.)

What is your favorite genre to read?

My book cravings come in phases. After reading Enni Amanda’s Christmas in July last year, I’ve got hankerings for tropey books featuring a lot of flirting. I’ve recently finished J. Leigh James’s Just Another Stupid Boy, which got intriguingly messy and then wrapped up so nicely. I’d like to read a romantic suspense or cosy mystery next, but still have a handful of contemporary reads I’m excited to devour.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Have you seen that meme that goes: “I am 60% the last book I read”? That’s kind of how I feel about fictional characters. Maybe it’s fickle not to have an all-time favourite character forever and ever, but I like the idea that maybe we evolve with every book we read. Whoever my favourite is today, I’m sure it’ll be a different story in a few books’ time!

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently outlining the next Somerville Stories novelette. It’s little romance set in a fictional bakery/dessert bar in a fancy part of my city. I’m not sure if I can call it a “multicultural romance” as both MCs are Asian, but it’ll still have that mellow Perth metropolitan vibe. Then in a couple of months, I’ll be revising The Guy from the Wedding, the next book in the Somerville Downs collection.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

After the complete farce that is my goal-setting ability, it’s best if I don’t make any promises. BUT if the stars align, I hope to have both of the aforementioned books ready to share with you early next year!
