Burning Bridges by Anne Krist

Genre Contemporary, Military Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

Consider the role of strangers in our lives. An unknown postman in Virginia hides a bag of mail one day. His simple action set in motion untold consequences for many others—strangers—all over the country. How many bridges were burned in that forgotten mail pouch?

Sara Richards’s world is rocked when three love letters from 1970 are delivered decades late. The letters were written by Paul Steinert, a young sailor who took her innocence with whispered words of love and promises of forever before leaving for Vietnam. Sara is left behind, broken hearted and secretly pregnant, yearning for letters she never received.

Then Paul died.

Now, years later, she discovers the betrayal wasn’t Paul’s, when her mother confesses to a sin that changed their lives forever. How can Sara reveal to Paul’s parents that they have a granddaughter they’ve missed the chance to know? Even worse, how will she find the words to tell her daughter that she’s lived her life in the shadow of a lie?

Picking her way through the minefields of secrets, distrust, and betrayal, Sara finds that putting her life together again while crossing burning bridges will be the hardest thing she’s ever done.

Know the Hero from Burning Bridges

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.

It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

Paul is an avid reader, so he always has something nearby to read. He like thrillers. Since he’s spent most of his adult life as a farmer, he keeps up with new techniques with farming magazines. He also likes to fish or just grab an apple and find a quiet place to relax.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

Bing candy bars—a concoction of a soft cherry center surrounded by chocolate. They’re only available in stores in the Midwest.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

Casual all the way. He’s used to jeans. He doesn’t wear tee shirts often, though. Casual, collared shirts are what he likes. When he dresses up, like for church or a special occasion, suits will do. But he gets out of them as soon as possible. He does splurge for some clothing. He has a fabulous sheepskin coat for those cold Iowa winters.

Does he know how to fix things?

He can fix most anything. Living far out of town, he and his brother and nephew rely on their skills to fix whatever breaks. Give Paul and engine—any kind of engine—and he’ll make it sing.

He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

In Vietnam, he tried to check a native family’s papers and return to his ship, but he nearly ended up in a bloodbath. It made his question why he and his fellow sailors were in Vietnam to begin with. The episode scared him. He relayed this in a letter to his love, Sara.

How does he act around children he doesn’t know?

Paul likes children but he doesn’t seek them out. When he’s around them he will generally stand back and let others take charge.

What is he like first thing in the morning?

He’s used to getting up before daylight and getting right into hard labor, so he pretty much is fine with it. I wouldn’t say he jumps out of bed and starts whistling, but he knows how to get half a day’s work done by the time others are just rising.

Can he use chopsticks?

If he wanted to, but why??

Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?

Oh yes. Strong and black.

What apps would he have on his phone?

Weather, a favorite parts store app, Amazon Kindle

Android or iPhone?

iPhone

Beard or clean-shaven?

Clean shaven

Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

Nope. He and a group of his shipmates decided to get tattoos once when they were on R&R in China Beach, but he said that he sobered up before it was his turn.

Personal vehicle or public transport?

Private transportation. In Iowa he had a truck and a Jeep. He took the truck with him to South Carolina. He’s always lived in places where public transportation wasn’t feasible.

Recycle or toss?

He recycles, though he’s not rabid about it.

Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!

A few years ago, Dee S. Knight began writing, making getting up in the morning fun. During the day, her characters killed people, fell in love, became drunk with power, or sober with responsibility. And they had sex, lots of sex. That’s how Dee spends her days. Her nights? Well, she’s lucky that her dream man, childhood sweetheart, and long-time hubby are all the same guy, and nights are their secret.
After a while, Dee split her personality into thirds. She writes as Anne Krist for sweeter romances, and Jenna Stewart for ménage and shifter stories. All three of her personas are found on the Nomad Authors website. Also, once a month, look for Dee’s Charity Sunday blog posts, where your comment can support a selected charity.
