Kurt Lowdon only wants to make sure his affairs are in order should the worst happen, but meeting Inessa gives him encouragement on the road to recovery. His quest to help her realize her self-worth leads them into dangers they never expected, as horrors from the war and long-hidden family secrets come back to haunt them.

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.

t’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

Kurt would likely be working on his plans for an organization to help other war veterans in Pittsburgh. He’s determined as long as he lives, he will work to help the traumatized vets returning with PTSD—like his friends Rafe and Susan.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

Kurt is picky about what he puts in his body, because he has cancer that he contracted in the first Gulf War when he was overseas. He’s trying to keep himself as healthy as possible while he’s hoping to be cured. So probably a piece of fruit or yogurt or something like that.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

Anything that screams “I’m alive!” Hawaiian shirts, bright colors, interesting vintage clothing.

Does he know how to fix things?

Some things. Basic household/office repairs. He’s good at fixing broken hearts, as Inessa finds out.

He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

He owns the building where Inessa’s office is located, and he runs a security business out of there, too. Inessa discovers that the couple upstairs is in trouble—the guy is an abuser and druggie, and the woman is stuck with him because of her autistic son. The woman reveals that the guy is planning on breaking into the office to steal valuable items. Kurt and some of his veteran buddies set up a sting, and catch the burglars in the act. But it turns out that the guy is also in cahoots with Kurt’s sister Marjie, who’s involved in drugs, too. The situation turns on him, and Marjie goes on a vengeful path of destruction against them.

How does he act around children he doesn’t know?

He’s definitely warm to kids. He knows he probably won’t have any of his own, considering his cancer.

What is he like first thing in the morning?

He does wake early, but a lot of days he’s sick. Some green tea and other calming foods help him move into action for the day.

Can he use chopsticks?

Absolutely. Whatever he does, he throws himself into it 100%.

Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?

He used to drink coffee, but now is drinking more healthy alternatives, green tea, miso soup and fresh-squeezed juices.

Android or iPhone?

He predates this. He’d probably have a Blackberry.

Beard or clean-shaven?

Kurt is clean-shaven on days he’s feeling well enough. On days he’s sick or recouping from chemo, he’d probably let shaving slide and keep his spoons for more important things.

Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

None. He’s still got the military mindset.

Personal vehicle or public transport?

He has his own car. For Kurt, time is precious. He doesn’t have time to adjust to the schedule that public transport might have, even as good as the Pittsburgh public transport is!

Recycle or toss?

Recycle. He’s very eco-conscious, just like he really wants to make the world a better place for his fellow veterans and everyone else.

Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!
