Up-and-coming mommyblogger and single mom Marisol Herrera Slade returns to her old hometown in western Pennsylvania for her 20th high school reunion in 2005, reluctant and yet compelled to see her high school sweetheart, Russell Asher, who dumped her for the homecoming queen.

Russell’s marriage to the golden girl, however, ended in a nasty divorce, and he has been systematically excluded from his sons’ lives. In his Internet wanderings, he’s found feminist blogger named Jerrika Jones, who glorifies single motherhood, essentially putting a stamp of approval on what’s happened to him. His group of single dad advocates have vowed to take this woman down.

What Russell doesn’t know, when he thinks to rekindle what he had with Marisol, is that Marisol and Jerrika are one and the same. When his group discovers the truth, will their drive for revenge derail any chance the couple have to reunite? Or will they find they have more in common than they ever expected?

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.

It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

He definitely picks up the video game controller and heads off to play some MMORPG—NBA Street 3, or Splinter Cell. More often than not he gets caught up in it and finds it hard to get up for work on three hours’ sleep.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

Burgers. If he’s looking for comfort food, then it’s something cheap, greasy and full of mayo.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

At work, he’s strictly a suit and tie guy, very professional. He wants it that way. But off duty, he’s more a khakis and polo kind of guy. His tennis shows are always name brand, though—comes from the high school days of playing team basketball.

Does he know how to fix things?

His dad was a putterer, so Russell knows a little about a lot of things. He can jury-rig most anything so it’ll work—for a while. But he’s more likely to hire someone to make the real repairs.

He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

It’s an ongoing struggle for him to see his sons. His ex-wife was the most popular (and richest) girl in school, and she’s got a rich daddy to buy her essentially everything she wants. Including finding ways to block Russell from any pleasure in the boys, He’s tried dropping in unexpectedly, making an effort to enforce the court order, calling, writing letters and everything he can think of, but he hasn’t been able to break that small-town power her family holds.

How does he act around children he doesn’t know?

He likes children. Since it’s so hard for him to see his own, he automatically relates to most kids he meets. Several kids live in his apartment complex, and he’ll always be friendly, help them out if their bike has a problem, do what he can for them.

What is he like first thing in the morning?

Most days he’s bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. He wants to make his way up the drug store chain’s corporate ladder, so he’s in fifteen minutes early at 5:45 AM, getting a head start on the work for the day. He’s the district manager now, but he’ll be regional manager if his work just gets a little more noticed. Then maybe he’ll be good enough for Tiffany to let him see his sons.

Can he use chopsticks?

Sure!

Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?

Oh, yes. If he didn’t, those first morning hours would be real hard. He can drink it any time of the day, too, so he’s lucky like that. Probably a throwback to the high school days when he and the guys would head out to the chain restaurant on the bypass and order coffee and a large plate of fries and sit and drink until the wee hours.

What apps would he have on his phone?
none

Android or iPhone?

Blackberry, actually.

Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

Managers have a pretty strict dress code—if they want to move up the chain of command. Russell is most assuredly a conservative dresser with none of those things, beard either…

Personal vehicle or public transport?

Personal vehicle, because he’s got to a) travel among the stores under his command, and b) because he has to drive back to Pennsylvania to see his aging parents and attempt to visit with his teenaged sons.

Recycle or toss?

Depends where he is. He’s got a recycle bucket at the apartment, but if he’s out playing basketball or on the beach at Mentor Headlands, he’s just as likely to toss.

Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!
