Romance in Blake’s Folly: Desert Rose and All About Charming Alice by J Arlene Culiner

    Genre: Contemporary Romance

    Book heat level: Rl

These two books go together, and dogs play an important role in both — as you can see from the covers.

The setting for both is Blake’s Folly, Nevada, a backwoods community of abandoned clapboard shacks, endless wind, and scraggly vegetation. In All About Charming Alice, Alice, my heroine, is a prickly character who rescues dogs, protects snakes, and actively fights against hideously cruel sports like rattle snake shows. My hero, Jace, an intellectual from Chicago, isn’t crazy about dogs or dog hair, and he hates snakes. Neither Alice nor Jace expect love, with its hesitations, misgivings, and bliss, to come galumphing over the horizon. Of course, before their relationship can work, Jace will have to learn to appreciate snakes — and that won’t be easy.

In Desert Rose, my hero, Jonah Livingstone, spends much of his time out in the open, sighting mule deer, bobcats, spotted bats, sidewinders, rattlers, and little gray lizards. My heroine Rose runs a secondhand dress shop, and the last thing she needs is an animal — what customer will buy clothes covered in dog hair? But when Alice arrives with Noodle, an ugly rescue dog, Rose doesn’t have the courage to hurt the poor beast’s feelings by rejecting him.

Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner

Men love Rose Badger, and if the other inhabitants of this dead-end town don’t approve, she couldn’t care less. With a disastrous marriage far behind her, settling down is out of the question. Isn’t life for fun? Doesn’t a stable relationship mean predictability and boredom? Perhaps things would be different with Jonah Livingstone, but he’s off limits because of a complicated past relationship. Besides, Rose has a secret life, and she’ll never give that up for any man

The last person geologist Jonah Livingstone expects to meet in a semi-ghost town is Rose Badger. She’s easy-going, delightfully spontaneous, and Jonah is certain their attraction is mutual. But Rose is always surrounded by admirers and doesn’t seem inclined to choose a favorite. And does he really want to settle into a permanent relationship?

All About Charming Alice by J Arlene Culiner

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice and Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner @JarleneCuliner @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsAlice Treemont has given up all hope of falling in love. Living in a semi-ghost town of old trailers, clapboard shacks, and thirsty weeds, she spends her time cooking vegetarian meals, rescuing unwanted dogs, and protecting the most unloved creatures on earth: snakes. What man would share those interests?

Jace Constant is doing research for his new book, but he won’t be staying long. Blake’s Folly is hell on earth. He’s disgusted by desert dust on his fine Italian shoes, and dog hair on his cashmere sweaters. As for snakes, he doesn’t only despise them–they terrify him.

So how is it possible that each time Alice and Jace meet, the air sizzles? Still, it looks like this relationship is doomed before it even starts.

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice, and Desert Rose

Nickname: They have no nicknames — but why would they need them with such original monikers?

    Gender: Male dogs

Species: A strange mixture of anything that happened to be passing through town

    Physical description of Killer

“The dog was large–very large. Its bulbous head seemed to sway on a sagging neck. Its legs were long, knotted, spindly, and its ribs wanted to punch through a dull, ratty-looking coat. Yet, ugly though it was, the damn thing still had appeal.”

    Physical description of Noodle

“The creature in question was the size of a very large shepherd, and it had rough unappealing fur of a splotchy beige-ish color. It also had the whiskers of a terrier, pointed ears, a corkscrew tail, and huge hairy paws. It was horribly ugly.”

Killer’s relationship to the main character:

In All About Charming Alice, Killer is the abandoned dog Jace brings to Alice’s dog shelter.

    Relationship to main character:

Alice takes Killer in, and he joins all the other abandoned dogs living with her. But she protects snakes, too.

    Relationship to the villain/antagonist:

When Alice is aggressed by a man who runs snake shows, Jace, much to his own surprise, comes to her rescue.

    Where this furbaby came from:

Killer was found wandering along the desert highway in Nevada

Noodle’s relationship to the main character: In Desert Rose, Noodle is brought to Rose’s secondhand shop by her friend Alice who thinks she needs protection.

Relationship to the villain/antagonist: There’s no villain. Jonah loves any animal, and if Rose has adopted a dog, that’s fine with him.

Where this furbaby came from: He was abandoned by a family that no longer wanted him.

What inspired you to create these characters?

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice and Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner @JarleneCuliner @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsIn All About Charming Alice, I wanted to present snakes, especially rattlers, in a positive light. I know many people have an instinctive fear of them, but I think that fear can be lessened when learning about such creatures. Unless they are threatened, snakes are certainly not aggressive, and having a herpetologist as my main character was the best way to explain that. We need snakes; they play such an important role in the natural world, yet they are persecuted.

Of course dogs are equally important in my books. I rescue dogs — and snakes, birds, rabbits, mice, snails, or any creature that needs help — and so several creatures always make guest appearances in my tales.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

All my main characters love animals. I wouldn’t really want to write about people who didn’t.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

Animals bring my main characters together.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

Who doesn’t like big, sloppy, affectionate dogs? And the fact that all the dogs in these books are rescue animals, certainly strikes a chord with many readers. As for snakes, I hope people will start to see them in another light.

Please share an interesting fact or tidbit about one sort of furbaby.

Even though they are loners, snakes meet up with others and spend winters in a hibernaculum or hibernation hole. Baby snakes even follow their mother’s scent to get to these holes. Inside some of the largest hibernacula, you can find hundreds of snakes as well as the other creatures they share the space with, such as tortoises.

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

One morning, before Jace knows that Alice is a herpetologist, he goes into her study with the intention of charming her. And just when he’s contemplating bending down to kiss her, he catches sight of a photo on her desk — the photo of a large rattler. All thoughts of seduction disappear, and terrified, he can’t move away quickly enough.

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice and Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner @JarleneCuliner @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsYou have to know dogs to be able to write about them. My own dogs are former strays. I found Yellow wandering along the road, just like Killer in All About Charming Alice. Virgule was an abandoned dog, just like Noodle in Desert Rose, and he ended up at the local SPA. I fell in love with him immediately because he is just too big, and too cute. I also have two indoor cats Petit Chat and Mocky (my garden is a registered bird and butterfly reserve, so cats can’t go outside and kill things). One cat was abandoned in the middle of the village; the other I adopted from the SPA.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

The dogs all come to where I’m working, lie down around my desk and look sorrowful because I’m not out walking them. The cats drape themselves over my papers and keyboard.

What do you feed your pets?

Dry kibble, but the dogs also love apples, pears, nuts, pumpkin, bread, and anything else tasty.

Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

Virgule loved chewing and demolishing plastic: electrical plugs, my cell phone, my computer transformer, plastic casing on wiring. Thankfully, as soon as I found Yellow on the road and adopted her, Virgule abandoned plastic.

Always on My Mind by Andrea Downing

    Genre Vintage Western Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG-13

1972 – Vietnam, the pill, upheaval, hippies. Wyoming rancher Cooper Byrnes, deeply attached to the land and his way of life, surprises everyone when he falls for vagabond hippie Cassie Halliday. Fascinated and baffled, he cannot comprehend his attraction—or say the words she wants to hear. Cassie finds Coop intriguingly different. As she keeps house for him and warms his bed at night, she admits to herself she loves him but she misinterprets Coop’s inability to express his feelings. Parted, each continues to think of the other, but how can either of them reach out to say, “You were ‘always on my mind’?”

Why did you write this book?

I learned that there had actually been a bust-up between ranchers and hippies at my local dancehall in Wilson, WY, in the seventies. You really can’t get two more disparate groups—ranchers with their attachment to the land, their feeling for the generations that have worked it before them, and then hippies who are mostly freewheeling and care-free, unattached to anything pretty much. I just had to think, what if?

What is your favorite genre to read?

I read a lot of women’s lit. and literary fiction. I’m afraid to read too much romance in case I steal someone’s idea, although really, there are only so many tropes for romance.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

So difficult Kayelle! But there are characters in a literary romance, I’ll call it, Midnight Cactus by Bella Pollen, and I got very involved with them.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m thinking and promoting and haven’t started another book. I just sent in a new mss. to my editor so I’ll have my hands full for a while between that and promoting this one, but that’s not to say I don’t have ideas on the bubble.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Hopefully, the historical western romance I just sent into my editor. It’s about a lady doctor and a former gunslinger trying to hang up his guns until he learns that his family have been murdered.

I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We’re excited to find out more about your heroine, but first, tell us about the book.

Double Moon Destiny by *lizzie starr

    Genre Fantasy Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

On the night of the Double Moon a child is born, and the destinies of an acolyte and a rebel are changed forever.

Jermanah, acolyte of the religious Compound, has never been given the opportunity to make her own choices. Although she accepts her way of life and yearns to rise higher in the order, she learns ancient, forbidden healing from the Seer. On the night of the

Double Moons, a child is born and given into Jermanah’s care until the boy is taken to the king.

Kierigh was born moments before the rising of the Double Moons, but his twin brother wasn’t so lucky. Rumors flow from the Stronghold—following an ancient prophecy, the king sacrifices the baby boys to increase his power. But Kierigh senses that even after five cycles, his brother still lives.

When Kierigh’s rebels attack the procession, he takes the babe, and Jermanah, to his hidden camp. The captivating acolyte disrupts Kierigh’s ordered and simple life. He opposes her religion and all the Compound claims to stand for. She’s everything he doesn’t need in his life. Yet she is everything he desires.

No longer considering herself one of the Compound, Jermanah discovers freedom, and truths she finds difficult to believe. But when the babe is taken from the forest, she will do anything to save the child, including face the leader of the Compound—and the king.

Can a rebel and an acolyte set aside pride and differences to find a lost brother, defeat evil, and discover their prophecy fulfilling destinies?

Know the Heroine from Double Moon Destiny

Here are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

It’s late, she’s bored. What does she do?

As an acolyte of the Compound, Jermanah has many duties set before her, leaving her little time to herself. But in those rare moments when she’s not following the priestess’ orders, or illicitly studying healing with the Seer she loves to practice the dances that are a part of the rituals of the Compound. So, even in her so-called free time, she’s still trying to perfect her life.

What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?

Life in the Compound is strict, and since she’s been a part of that world since her birth, Jermanah has no concept of being able to buy more than she’s given. Once she leaves the Compound and discovers there is such a thing as freedom of choice, she still marvels at the options. Even simple meats and cheeses in a loaf of fresh bread is amazing to her. Once she discovers sweets, that would be what she’d buy–from honey on bread to a sugary confection.

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

Within the Compound, Jermanah had no choice of clothing. She wore the scratchy, hot robes of an acolyte. When she’s taken to the hero’s camp deep in the forest, she’s given a soft tunic and trousers. These are what she loves to wear. Beside the comfort of the smooth materials, this clothing allows her a new freedom. But she doesn’t accept the soft-soled shoes. She’s never worn shoes, and sees no reason to start.

Does she know how to fix things?

Jermanah is a born mystical healer, so she is able to fix people. As she follows her destiny, she discovers she is able to heal or fix certain situations. But if she had to fix a broken tool she would be lost. Unless there was a book to tell her how, then perhaps…

She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

Even though she tries to be a proper acolyte and follow the strictures of the Compound, there’s a bit of a rebel in Jermanah. Acolytes are not allowed contact with the Seer, but the old man sensed her healing abilities and sought her out for training. She knows this new knowledge, and her abilities must be kept hidden, for mystical healing is also forbidden to any but the Seer. But somehow, the HIghest of the High learns of her skills and calls upon them during the birth of the next child of the double moons. Following the Highest’s orders, Jermanah attempts to ease the pregnant woman who refuses to allow her child to be born into the hands of the Compound. Instead of offering comfort and discovering the joy of a new life, Jermanah is forced to witness violence and death. Her healing failed.

How does she act around children she doesn’t know?

As an acolyte, Jermanah had little contact with the younger girls in the Compound. When she’s given the newborn child to care for, she panics, but soon discovers the caring and compassionate part of her healing talents and relaxes. As she grows comfortable in her life outside the Compound, she’s kind and interested in the children, drawing them out and making each feel special.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

Days in the Compound started before dawn, so she is alert and active first thing in the morning. She’s ready to start her day. Unless for some reason she’s allowed to sleep later. Then she becomes flustered and irritated–feeling as though she’s failed.

How does she act around people who don’t know what she is?

Once released from the strict confines of the Compound, Jermanah is hesitant around people. She discovers there is a deep distrust bordering on hatred toward both the Compound and the king’s Stronghold. As a known acolyte, she is scorned by some in the rebel camp, and whispers and comments follow her when she passes them. She withdraws and attempts to keep to herself. But once others come to know her, she is open and friendly.

Will she let a worker handle things or do it herself?

Her tendency is to handle things herself. She’s uncomfortable asking others to do anything for her.

    Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

Adornment was forbidden in the Compound, so no.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

The world of the double moons has little technology. Transportation is by foot or wagon. Soldiers ride great war beasts. Although she is carried on one of these beasts for a short while, and offered a place on a wagon, she prefers to have her bare feet solidly on the ground.

    Recycle or toss?

Definitely recycle. There aren’t enough resources to waste items no longer in use. Even stones used in building are reused.

Thanks for helping us get to know your heroine!

Know the Hero from Open to Love by Lyndell Williams @laylawriteslove #RLFblog #interracialromanceLyndell Williams, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We’re excited to find out more about your hero, but first, tell us about the book.

Open to Love by Lyndell Williams

    Genre Interracial Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

The last thing Hafsah wants is to get wrapped up in another marriage, let alone with a younger man. Despite the desire he reawakens in her, she is not going to fall into another trap. Faheem is undisturbed by the age difference and undeterred by her doubts. He feels the passion surging between them and is determined to get her to open to love.

Know the Hero from Open to Love

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.

It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

When boredom hits, Faheem likes to flop on the sofa and pick up a controller. He slaps on a headset and starts trash talking his gaming buddies. FPS games like Killzone, Doom and classics Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty are his favorites. He gets to connect with childhood friends who have moved away are too busy, kill some bad guys and his boredom.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

While young, Faheem would watch his non-Muslim and some Muslim friends chomping down on fast food from places like Mc Donalds and Burger King. Since most of the food was not halal, he never ate there. Well, he got to grab a milk shape and some french fries, but never anything with meat. Even fish fillets were off limits because they were fried in the same grease as the chicken.

The fact that there weren’t any halal fast food spots, like there were the city, only made Long Island, NY suburban life more torturous. When the first halal fast food restaurant opened one town over, he became a regular. The more that opened, the more he frequented, chowing down on burgers and Philly cheesesteaks. Consequently, he chubbed up and had to restrain himself and hit the gym a little harder.

Faheem has gotten control over his halal fast food addiction, but he’ll still pull over and pick up a cheesesteak when his stomach growls when he’s on the road.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

Faheem loves to dress casually. Henley shirts and jeans stuff his drawers, and he purposefully chose to work at an atelier style architectural firm so he wouldn’t have to spend days stuffed in a suit. While designing, he wears a dress shirt and slacks with a pair of Raf Simons Adidas sneakers, expressing his unique style as he makes his way to partner.

Does he know how to fix things?

Faheem’s uncle is a master contractor, who took him under his wing as soon as he could hold a hammer. Faheem loved building things, and he worked with his uncle to pay for college and become an architect. He can fix almost anything, except electrical. He saw an electrician get shocked and carted off to the hospital when he was seventeen. So, he will be calling someone if wiring is involved.

Although he loves being an architect, working on his new house allows him to put down the titanium drafting pencil and satisfy the builder in him.

He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

Faheem learned how to cook from his mother. He loved spending time at the stove with her, and became confident in the kitchen. He even decided to surprise her and make haleem. He waited for a day his parents were out of town and pulled out the ingredients, pot and Googled the recipe.

Hours of chopping, mashing and YouTube videos later, and he ended up sitting in the middle of the floor with a pot full of lumpy meat and wheat. He gave up, threw out his failed attempt and cleaned up the kitchen, determined to stay in culinary lane in the future.

How does he act around children he doesn’t know?

Faheem loves the kids. He is an only child and was always thrilled when cousins and friends came over. He was older than a lot of his cousins, which often made him a default babysitter, and he didn’t mind holding crying little ones and entertaining them. He will still scoop up a crying baby or try to soothe someone with a boo boo. When he walked into his fiance Hafsah’s apartment and saw her friend Rahma struggling with a fussy infant, he went into action and had the baby sleeping on his shoulder in minutes. He can’t wait to have one of his own.

What is he like first thing in the morning?

Each morning before sunrise, Faheem gets up for the first morning prayer. It is a serene time, when he gets to connect with his Creator and ground himself for the day. The ritual wash at the sink refreshes him while the dark windows and dim lighting from lamps keep him calm.

He is a wunderkind, who has accomplished a lot through hard work and focus. Things can get hectic, and having the opportunity to start the day in a peaceful state is important for him to achieve his goals.

    Can he use chopsticks?

Faheem would not see the point in learning how to eat with chopsticks to enjoy food. He has watched people outside of his culture take up aspects of it in an attempt to “go native” and seem worldly. So, facetious cultural acrobatics are not his thing.

Faheem is also one of those Muslims who likes to eat traditionally with his fingers when he can. He forgoes eating utensils whenever possible. So, he would only use anything if he has to do something like cutting a piece of chicken or eating soup. Of course, if he is at a restaurant or a formal meal, a knife and fork will be the way to go.

Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?

Coffee in a cup holder on the way to work is a good start for Faheem. His mother makes the best chai in the world, so he is very picky about the tea lets between his lips. Barely-hot tea with a label dangling from a string on the side of a paper cup is not an option. While he’s at the office or working on the renovations of his newly-purchased fixer upper, coffee flows freely. Once he gets to a pot, milk and some loose Danedar tea leaves, he indulges in a major comfort drink for him. He also looks forward to a super hot tea after prayers in the masjid during Ramadan.

What apps would he have on his phone?

Faheem keeps his finger on the pulse of what is going on in his field through social media. He follows architects on Instagram and Twitter. He also likes to have fun posting and responding to his friends on Snapchat and Tik Tok.

He doesn’t like dragging a laptop around, so he has apps like MagicPlan to measure rooms, Construction Master Pro for complex planning calculations and AutoCAD 360 to have his drawings available wherever he is.

    Android or iPhone?

Faheem is the adaptable type. He can adjust to almost anything or situation without letting it get to him too much. He treats himself to a phone every birthday and has had both Androids and iPhones over the years. He usually chooses a device based upon its features and how good a deal he can get for it. After haggling with the brother from the masjid who owns a cell phone store, he’ll sync his iCloud to the latest Android device he got and tucks whatever he has selected without getting flustered.

    Beard or clean-shaven?

Faheem sports a full and righteous beard with his long, silky hair. He grew up around his father and uncles, all of whom considered a bear a manly-must. As a practicing Muslim, a beard is more than just facial hair. It is an expression of his faith. Unlike some of the Muslim men around him, he doesn’t let it grow too long. He will trim it and keep it a manageable length for him.

    Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?

Some of Faheem’s friends would clown him because he refused to get tattoos, but he never had an interest.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

Living on Long Island, NY Faheem needs a car to live. He has a car to commute to his job at the firm. On weekends, he climbs into his pickup filled with supplies and heads to work on his house. He is ready to start a life and family. Building a home and courting Hafsah are the steps he’s taking to have one.

    Recycle or toss?

Faheem can definitely do better in the conservation department. His mother is always bugging him to use the blue cans in the kitchen. He rarely does. He knows recycling is important, but it is not on his immediate radar.

Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!

Please tell us a little about yourself.

After fleeing a troubled past, all I want was to be left alone. I took a yoga instructor position in Colorado Springs to escape the drama in my life, the last thing I need is complications with Devlin Sawyer, a ruggedly handsome retired Navy SEAL. But when I enroll in a women’s weapons class at Devlin’s state of the art gun club, that is exactly what I encounter. With my guard dog, Piper, I navigate the friggin perilous waters of trust, friendship, and learning to ski. Should I give love a second chance?

Who is the significant other in your life?

Devlin Sawyer, a retired Navy SEAL with a fantastic secret.

If you haven’t made a bucket list before, perhaps now would be a good time. Who knows? It might inspire another book. While you’re at it, how about telling us about some of your other favorite things? Here are the questions.

    I’m a twin, first born.

Magic, you can do anything with it.

Describe your favorite food and how it’s prepared.

Pizza with thin crispy crust and lots of sauce and cheese.

I don’t really have a best friend. I have always kept to myself to keep my talents from being discovered. But one of my employees, Josie is a close friend. She’s impetuous, fun-loving and dependable. She is estranged from her family as I am, so it makes us understand each other.

What are two places you would like to visit before you die, and why?

Ireland. I’ve love to explore all the ancient castles. And Australia. I love to visit the Australia Zoo.

Where is a place you would never like to return, and why?

Martha’s Vineyard. To many bad memories.

Who is someone you would like to meet, and why?

Devlin’s dad. I’ve met his sister, she’s a hoot, but a polar opposite to him. I’d like to see which of his children are like him.

Who is someone you would like to avoid, and why?

My brother. Together we’ve destroyed our family.

If you could time travel to any date, what would it be, and what would you do there?

I’d go back to the day I torched my brother’s vampire girlfriend and shattered our family. See if it could have been handled differently.

    About Tena Stetler

What was your biggest challenge in writing this book?

Keeping it under 20,000 words. It was a special series put out by my publishing house The Wild Rose for Valentine’s Day 2016, entitled Candy Heart Romances. Required word count was under 20,000. I barely made it a 19,999. LOL

Why did you choose this character for the interview today?

She is a feisty character. After I finished writing the book, she had more to say and insisted that I write a sequel. Charm Me Again was released December 2019.

When writing the book, what did you discover about this character that surprised you?

That she had a twin brother. She had to torch her brother’s vampire girlfriend to save his life.

Are any sequels planned for this book?

Yep. Summer insisted and Charm Me Again was released December 9, 2019.

What genre(s) would you like to write that you haven’t tried yet?

    Sci-Fy time travel

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I was a radio DJ for two years.

Why should readers who haven’t picked up one of your books before give this one a try?

It’s a short fun flirty paranormal romance with a happy ever after ending. Something I think we need more of these days.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?

I hope my books act as a stress reliever while you are whisked away from your ordinary world into a romantic fantasy adventure for a few hours. Thank you so much for buying my books. Psssst… Charm Me is on sale for only 99 cents for a limited time!
