How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since I was a preteen, but not always publishing. I began publishing romance in 2012 with a short story. I still love to write short stories and even flash fiction. What was your first published book?
My first published short story was The Applicant which has since been expanded into a novella and published by Dreamspinner Press. In it a lonely roboticist has a particularly stressful day dealing with a rampaging teddy bear robot, a time traveler from the future, and several applicants who want to become his new research assistant.
Tell us about your writing space or home office.
I love my little writing desk. It’s my haven and my most productive space. Here’s a picture!
Anything special about your space?
I absolutely love my poster of the Hero’s Journey. I studied Joseph Campbell’s monomyth in college and this poster is a whimsical look at how a character crosses out of the ordinary world and into the hero realm. The poster was created by Ryan Dunlavey in conjuction with his graphic novel Action Philosophers written by Fred Van Lente. The poster is sadly no longer for sale, but here’s a closer look at it:
What do you love most about that area?
It’s located in my guest bedroom so it gets lots of natural sunlight but there’s a lamp for nighttime writing as well. My cats will come in to enjoy the sunshine and stay for a cuddle as I write.
What would like to change about your home office?
I’m thinking of moving my desk into my library. I have a big wide windowseat that’s just the perfect height for my desk (and if I get tired I can sack out among my books!). The library is actually a repurposed dining room. Since I already have a perfectly good breakfast nook for my four person table, I thought I’d just build some bookshelves and make a library. As you can see in the picture, the window seat is actually a cedar chest I got as a wedding present from my cousin.
What’s the last book about writing that you read?
Verbalize: bring stories to life and life to stories by Damon Suede. I love Damon’s writing style and this was a fun read. His book emphasizes the use of action in verbs, plot and character tactics. His point of view from theater and screenwriting was refreshing and shined a light on fiction writing that I was unfamiliar with.
What book or books about writing do you recommend for new authors?
I really like Romancing the Beat: Story Structure for Romance Novels (How to Write Kissing Books Book by Gwen Hayes. It gives a really basic, easy to understand breakdown of the romance novel. I’m also totally in love with all the thesauruses (beginning with the Emotion Thesaurus) by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi. What do you like to read for relaxation?
Everything! Depending on what day it is or what room of my house I’m inhabiting, I’ll be reading historical romance, hard science fiction, biographies, cozy mysteries, or even an epic fantasy. I can’t be tied to one genre in my reading, which probably explains why I skip around genres when I’m writing as well.

Why did you write this book?
Thank you for asking, Kayelle! We’ve gotten great response from readers for Hunters’ Watch Brigade: Initiation, the first novel in my series. This is the second book and follows Sam and Max’s adventures as they fall in love while fighting Supernatural chaos in New York City.
I don’t like how devices interfere with conversations with people in real life. I wondered what would happen if someone designed a game people played on their phones and it caused all sorts of Supernatural chaos.
I combined my love for scavenger hunts and visiting famous sites in the city of Manhattan to create an adventure readers will love.
I also love the Greek Pantheon, so The Game allowed me to send Samantha up to Mount Olympus to visit her Uncle Zeus and her cousin Artemis along with her father Poseidon. She gets to ride Pegasus, one of my favorite scenes!
What is your favorite genre to read?
I like most genres, but my favorite is Urban Fantasy with strong paranormal romance elements. I like magic in my stories, and a heavy dose of heart thumping romance.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Right now, Cat Crawfield from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. And I love her even more when Bones is on the page too.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m happy to say I’m working on Hunters’ Watch Brigade: Betrayal, the third book in my series planned for release later this year with ImaJinn Books.
What books will we see from you in coming months?

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?
Yes, I do! Humorous romantic mysteries and romantic comedy short stories.
How do you come up with ideas?
With short stories, sometimes, people say things and my head goes bing! and the story takes off. It is so gratifying and fun when that happens. I did take a short story class early on and we were challenged to study a picture and create a story from it. It worked!
What is the single most important part of writing for you?
I love when the story is roughed and I can get to work to make it better. I’ll finesse until I’m sick of it.

I wrote my first book about fourteen years ago after a friend challenged me. Handsome was floored.FUN

Please tell us about yourself.
NJ Walters is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.
What is your go-to meal when you dine out?
One of my treats is to take myself out for breakfast twice a week. Working from home, it gets too easy to just stay inside. It’s my way of making sure I don’t become a complete hermit. I usually get whole wheat toast and a scrambled egg. I know, so exciting. But I enjoy curling up with my breakfast and a large cup of tea and reading a good book.
Who is your “book boyfriend” (that hottie you read about and drool over)?
Only one? It’s so hard to choose just one. There are so many amazing book boyfriends to choose from. Right off the top of my head, I’d say Rhage from J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I mean, who doesn’t want a badass who can turn into a dragon.
Kaleb Krychek from Nalini Singh’s Heart of Obsidian is a close second. This man is willing to destroy anyone and anything that gets in the way of finding his woman. He won’t stop until he finds her. *sigh*
Describe the perfect vacation.
For a quiet vacation, I enjoy the beach. I’m not talking about lying on a soft, sandy beach sipping a drink. I’m more about beachcombing on a rugged shoreline. You never know what you might find. I’ve found a coin from a hundred years ago and have a decent beach glass collection. I love to wander up and down a beach. I can spend hours doing that. It’s endlessly fascinating.
What kinds of things do you read when you’re researching a new book?
The fun thing about writing is that you never know where the research might take you. I research a lot of places. Currently it’s Alaska. Checking out guidebooks and maps and websites. YouTube is a great help as well. I also spent some time checking out knives and knife fighting. Wow, there are some amazing people out there. And it was an excuse to watch more Forged in Fire episodes on TV.
If the hero of your latest book called you on the phone, what would be a perfect ringtone for him?
Since Jarek and Marc live in a world that doesn’t have phones, if they heard one ring they’d most likely smash it to bits with their swords. That would be fun to watch.

Why did you write this book?
I thought it would be fun to play with someone else’s money, plus I’d get to “experience” life through a character who has more wealth than he knows what to do with. Turns out, it’s harder to write about having that kind of money than you’d think. I had to stretch to imagine having a private jet on call or what it would be like to live in a palazzo in Venice.
What is your favorite genre to read?
Although I read a variety of genres, contemporary romance is my favorite.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
I really like Mark Watney from The Martian (by Andy Weir). He’s emotionally strong and smart and resourceful. He never gives up, despite the overwhelming odds he faces. And he has a great sense of humor, which can usually help people get through the worst of times.
What are you working on at the moment?
I was recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, so my immediate focus isn’t on writing, but on completing chemo and my upcoming surgeries. That being said, when I feel well enough between treatments, I’m busy plotting out the next books in the Sebastian Billionaire series.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
